I ordered this router from Amazon because two WRT160N's from Linksys both locked up within 10-12 hours of use, in spite of directed cooling fans. This is a very preliminary review that attempts to help solve some problems that might face anyone converting from the popular Linksys routers to this fine piece of equipment from D-Link.First of all, I never use install software for routers. I configure them manually via the web page. This is where I encountered my first problem (although the included software install utility fell victim to the same issue).I had my existing machines configured with static IPs. I could not connect to the router from any of them. It turns out the D-Links expect an IP address to be in the range 192.168.0.xxx and not 192.168.1.xxx, during configuration. Until I discovered this little "anomaly", I could not connect to the router's web page. The simple cure to start was to take the computer I was attempting to do the configuration of the router with and let it get its IP address from the router. Immediately I could connect and begin configuring the router. Setup was very easy (Manual). I understand enough networking stuff to configure a router in just a few minutes, and the internal web page layout is intuitive and well described, including excellent help screens, if needed. For all my machines configured with Static IPs, I had to edit each one from 192.168.1.xxx to 192.168.0.xxx, or none of them would connect. Of course, I could have just let the router assign IPs, but I prefer my own network topology. If you have other networked devices like Network Drives, etc., be sure to set them to DHCP before changing routers, or you won't be able to access them easily. I had them set for static IPs, and had to spend two hours finding out how to get access to them, because again, they were in the 192.168.1.xxx range. (I had to discover how to reset them to DHCP with special utilities and/or special button presses on a MyBook World 1 TB and Buffalo Pro Duo 1 TB)Once configured for the service provider's static IP, etc., assignments to me, I was on the net.Throughput was an issue. I was only seeing about 15 to 20 percent of maximum throughput on G (2.4 gig), and had not tested N (5 gig) yet. Some poking around and I found that QOS was turned on to "Shape" WAN traffic by default. This provides priority to gaming activities (which I have no interest in). By default "Shaping" is on. Doing internet speed testing, I was getting 70 KB/sec downloads and only 9 to 12 KB/sec uploads. I disabled "Shaping" and instantly the speeds were up to snuff. So, a word to the wise...you may want to turn off "Shaping" to start with. The setting is in the Advanced > QOS section in the Web Page setup. The router's default http address is different from the Linksys. The D-Link uses 192.168.0.1, while the Linksys uses the more familiar 192.168.1.1. Don't forget if you have static IPs on your machine to change them to match the "0" ...leaving them at "1" would not work for me.Overall setup is a dream. G range is very good. N range and performance have not been evaluated yet. I was especially fond of how easy and intuitive it was to set up port forwarding, and band/performance parameters. Everything made sense, and nothing left me "guessing". I'm using a Netgear USB G adapter and a WGA600N dual band adapter (when I get to the N section). No compatibility problems so far.)They warn not to configure the router using a wireless connection. Once configured and rebooted, I have found I can go into the router web page any time I like and make edits using a wireless machine. If N lives up to G, I'll be a very happy camper. I'll submit another review after I do my N evaluation. I'm waiting for a firmware update of another device to be able to test HD Television streaming from an HD Satellite DVR to another sat box. This is a very demanding environment and should be a good test.Initial Throughput Assessment:G (2.4 gig) = 2.5 megabytes per secondN (5 gig) = 10.0 megabytes per secondHigh Definition TV Streaming: N band performance is EXCELLENT at about 30' away, through one wall/window. No halting or other video/audio anomalies. Signal levels near 100% on both N and G.Throughput measurements done with Linksys WUSB600N Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter

Wish I could write a better review for this product as I love the concept, and I've actually bought a number of variants on this design.But...Every one I've ever bought has quit working after a few months. It seems to work, all the lights blink appropriately, but nothing I try to connect to it will get an IP address. I finally resorted to buying the Airport Express from Apple, which has worked extremely well, but isn't as small as this device is, and I was very excited about having a USB device connected remotely!Ah well... Your mileage may vary, but I'm never taking (another) chance on this again.

What can one say about a piece of computer equipment? Unless one is a geek, not much. We want it cheap, to be reliable and to be easy to use. What can we say about the D-Link DIR-632 router? It is inexpensive (manufacturers hate the word cheap), it is reliable and mostly easy to use. We'll get to that mostly part in a moment. For an 8-port router, the price of the D-Link is very reasonable. That is a lot of ports for the price. Throw in N wireless and it is a bargain.Reliable? Prior to upgrading, my smart phone kept losing sync with my older G wireless router. My smart phone supports the new N wireless settings so in addition to being more reliable it is also faster. Since installing the D-Link DIR-632, my smart phone has not dropped the wireless connection at all.Easy to use. Yes, we are to the "mostly" moment. Using OS X means that manufacturers don't always think about us. D-Link though has special instructions for Mac and Linux people. Granted, the automated setup available to Windows users on the included CD does not work for us, but the printed quick start guide does a pretty good job of getting the setup started under OS X.The biggest complication experienced is because we also have Uverse at the house and well, it has wireless G and insists on always being on. For people who have DSL or cable providers, the D-Link will be much easier to setup.D-Link provides a full set of options when setting up the router. From the router setup page one can do automated or manual configuraiton. The manual configuration pages are pretty easy to figure out.All in all, I am very happy with the D-Link DIR-632 and would recommend it to friends.Rebecca KyleDecember 2010

This is a great router. It has usb for network printing or storage drives. The best thing about this router is that it has very good range.I am getting good signal strength from about 70 feet away in the back bedrooms. I'm very happy with this router.

After hours of programming, I finally called D-Link and spoke with LynnIt seems that my Actiontec (TDS) modem also uses the 192.168.0.1 call that is given in the instructions, so I needed to change to 192.168.5.1 in a couple of settings and I was ok.At least daily it loses the wireless signal and needs to be rebooted.I finally ran a power connection up to the main floor so I can reboot without running downstairs.

I was really looking forward to getting this router, having waited a long time for someone to finally offer an 8-port wireless N router.I have a D-Link DIR-600, which has been very reliable for nearly two years.I hooked up this router and the wired connections began working immediately. I had to call tech support to get the wireless working. We have computers running Windows XP, Windows 7, and Mac OS 10.5 on our wireless network. The Mac worked fine on the first try, but of course both Windows machines had trouble connecting. D-Link tech support was good, though, figuring out the problems within about 20 minutes on a Saturday morning at 5 AM. They got both Windows machines up and running.Five hours later, the connection dropped. Not just the wireless connection, the entire connection to the internet! Restarting the modem and router worked -- for about an hour. Then the router went down again. After that, it would stay connected for no more than a minute. Tech support said to return it. Sounds like they are getting a lot of these back.Cheaply manufactured junk, with no quality control. Tiger Direct graciously paid for the return shipping via UPS, but gave no other option than returning it for a refund. No exchange for another one. I'm not sure if this is their policy for all items, or whether they know these are junk. Not sure if I'm going to try another one. I wish there was another 8-port wireless N router on the market, I'd try it if the price was right.

This is just what we were looking for. With five computers at home, 2 gaming systems, and a shared printer, the D-Link 8 port router was the ticket. Quick easy setup in two minutes. Great range for my wireless laptop at the pool or in the backyard. Also a better connection for my smartphone. With the addition of a USB port that is very handy. This feature is usually found on more expensive routers. You can't go wrong with this router.

Read several reviews about this router and almost did not buy. But I am quite pleased that I did because there is no other 8 port wireless router on the market for such a low price. I have it for one month now and it has been flawless. Setup was not so easy. I had to try the CD three times before it worked and I am not sure why. I did not do anything different, just plugged the CD in. Once I got the wired network (am am using 7 of the eight ports) working, I had to call dlink to set up security on the wireless. I am familiar with WEP Encrypting etc. Five minutes with tech support and my issues were resolved. But it was a long wait to get tech support.Howard

Go away from this Dlink DIR-825. It does not work with VOIP and the clock resets every time you reboot. I've had Dlink before and was "OK' and worked fine with my VOIP system. I also had Netgear and also worked with VOIP. This is the only router that does not. I've researched the web for possible solution including firmware upgrade but failed. Stay away from this model.

I had this unit out of the box and fully functional as an access point on my network in 15 minutes. While I agree the documentation stinks, if you are familiar with wireless setup all you need to know is the IP address, username and password. The rest is pretty basic.

I haven't had any issues with the router, which I got as a 2nd wireless point in the house. I've had it for several months now.My only problem is I wish manufacturers would quit putting the super bright LED's on everything. I have gadgets all over the house, and at night, the house is lit up like crazy. Stop making the LED's so bright! My review is 4 stars specifically because of this issue.

Replaced a near new Netgear router that just wasn't cutting it. The Netgear would not reach 2 rooms in my house and occasionally the Wi-Fi would shut down and router would have to be re-booted. This D-Link works great so far, including the 2 rooms the Netgear would not. It was friendly to set up and I'm, a happy camper! I have 2 iPads, a laptop, a printer and friends that drop in using my Wi-Fi. 3 computers are hardwired to the router. A bargain price for a good router as I see it.

I set mine up with a wireless Blue Ray for netflix and wired for 2 computers, 2 a printer, one is also a scanner and a vioice over IP router for Vonage. I attached a the USB hub to the the USB hub used I plug in the two printers. The share port utility which comes with the unit is great. It can either open the port one at a time per computer as needed or the port is opened automatically as demanded by the computers. The setup seemed easy enough, but I had perform to hard reset as suggested by tech support, because my printers would hang up daily without explination. I then had to set it up again. I hypothisize that the Sony wireless blue ray player hangs up the printers when it is shut off, requireing a reboot.I further had to update the drivers for the HP 3600n priinter. If it does not print I just reboot my computer which I should be doiing daily anyway.I am glad I purchased this model as I needed the 8 LAN ports and the USB port.Would I buy it again. My answer is yes.The price I found it for on Amizon was excellant.

I have had this router for a couple of months and it worked great. But now it loses connection to the Internet almost every day and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to reconnect. What a pain!I have been on the phone with customer support for over 6 total hours, with no help. They finally sent me a replacement that looked like it had been dragged behind a car. I just repackaged and sent it back to them. What a joke of a company.UPDATE:I read on another site that Android phones might be causing these routers to crash. If this is the case, which I have no proof other than I did connect to it with an HTC EVO, it's still a router problem and D-link should resolve it. It would be interesting to see if any other users have had the same problem and connected with an Android phone.

From day one my DIR-825 was buggy. It would work with some devices, others would get a wireless connection but have local only network. I would have to manually assign an IP address (DHCP would only work for some devices and only infrequently) to get new devices to work. Friends would come over and not have any internet unless I reconfigured their computer for a static IP address. This is far more than the average user would want to do or would be able to do, and it was certainly frustrating.Technical support was very nice, usually had short wait times, but they couldn't peg down the problem, but would just have me assign static IP addresses as the workaround. Then I finally got a support agent, right before I was going to return the router, who asked me update the firmware. The device didn't recognize that there was an update available, but after going to dlink's website, downloading the firmware update, updating the firmware, this router has been the best. It seems to prioritize traffic well, keeping streaming videos and internet calls much more seamless than my previous router. Range is much better than my previous Cisco-Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router and so is the speed. After the firmware update I have not had any problems with incompatible devices, nor have I had the issues with local-only access. So my recommendation is, after you buy it, go to dlink's website and update the firmware. Then enjoy.

The D-Link DIR-825 replaced my old faithful Netgear WGR614 wireless B and Grouter. I bought the D-Link for the wireless N capability because the wireless G spectrum is getting a little crowded in my neighborhood. The wireless N capability of the dir-825 alleviated this problem. One thing I did find with this router is that you need to make sure your firmware is updated (updating it today solved a voice over IP problem I'd been struggling with for a month) and before you do that, save your existing configuration before you upgrade your firmware. This allows you to retain all your settings because the firmware upgrade will usually wipe out some of your settings, and it can be a pain to restore them manually. The menu's can be a little intimidating to a novice (me included) and are a little more complex than my old Netgear's but overall I'm quite happy with the router.I spoke to tech support twice on this router and the second support tech was a great help. Also, go to the D-Link web page for any updates since they keep it more up to date than when you look for a the firmware update using the router's web page.Adding additional D-Link wireless devices is very easy using the WPS system.Recommended!Update... I did find the auto channel selector useless since I was getting interference from another wireless network using channel 6. I changed the channel manually to an open channel and the interference went away.Update.. As of 2012 the DIR-825 would shut down and reboot after a half hour or so when I was communicating directly to the router through the Ethernet connection (Ethernet connection over heating maybe). Once the router rebooted it would continually reboot every couple of minutes and wouldn't stabilize. only a computer shutdown and a restart lat a later time would temporarily stop the problem. At first I thought the network connection on my computer was bad and I replaced it but the problem persisted. After replacing the D-Link router with an Asus router the problem immediately cleared up. At this point I cannot recommend the DIR-825 for long term network stability.
