I feel it important to warn Amazon customers about buying from outside venders through the Amazon billing system (Fulfillment by Amazon). In the past 15 years I have been an online shopper and have made numerous purchases through many venders on they're own website. I shop online as a necessity, not just a convenience as I don't drive. The online store I most recently dealt with through the Amazon billing system was Tiger Direct where I mistakenly purchased a D-Link DIR-632 Wireless-N 8-Port Router by selecting it on Amazon! Don't get me wrong Tiger Direct is a wonderful place to buy computers and computer products! Both my desktop computer and NAS were purchased directly from Tiger Direct! Through this latest purchase and subsequent attempt to return a mistakenly purchased item I've learned to deal with venders on they're own websites. I needed a wireless DSL modem router combo when I ordered the wireless router. The wireless router was never opened as I recognized the mistake immediately (the wireless router is 8 ports and the combo is 4 ports), I'm trying to return the wireless router and exchange it for the wireless DSL modem router combo, of course paying any difference in price. This shouldn't be a problem but seems to be when dealing through Amazon with another vendor?.

I've been looking for something like this for a long time, something to carry in my laptop bag when I travel and something to carry in my IT toolkit. This device has 3 operational modes with different uses. I wouldn't recommend this device unless you need to switch between these modes with the same device, but that feature has good uses. There is a Client mode. This will allow you to join the device to a wireless network, and bridge it to the ethernet port. This means you can connect a wired device to a wireless network. The downside to this mode is that one must first manually configure an IP address in the subnet of the Dlink default IP (192.168.1.50) so one can get to the configuration, then reset their IP back to dynamic or an IP in the wireless network you're connecting to.This is useful for when someone moves a wired only computer or printer where there isn't a wire yet, and you need to just get it working for a while until the cabling happens or a more permanant device is ordered. You can also use it to connect your Xbox over at a friend's house. They may have wireless, you may have wired like in my case. Just configure it for their network and plug it into your xbox and bring it over. There's other potential uses for this mode too. There is a Router mode. This will let you share an internet connection on the wired port with wireless devices. This puts them behind a NAT router as well, with all the usual settings. This is the easiest to setup and understand, just like your typical router but missing wired ports. You can get in on the default dlink wireless network, go to the default IP (192.168.1.50) and then change any settings, setup security, setup a static WAN address etc. This is useful for when you want to share a dsl modem with a group of laptops, or join a laptop to a wired network but have it behind the NAT firewall, isolating it from incoming access from that network. I really won't use this option much, but as an IT guy, it's helpful to have in my laptop bag a spare router that could be setup for wireless clients in a pinch. There is a Access Point mode. This will let you bridge a wired network into a wireless network. This bypasses any firewall/router and will share the wired network's DHCP and all that. This works out of the box with no configuration, but I'd recommend connecting to the wired port with a static ip to connect to the 192.168.1.50 and changing the name/setting up security. You don't want to have rogue access points allowing people unsecured access to your wired network usually, even temporarily. This is the most useful mode for me. You can use this at locations that don't have a wireless. Just plug it in, and then you can connect your laptop and roam around without having to cable your laptop in. You can connect multiple devices as well. This is good for taking a hotel with a poor or no wireless connection but a wired one, and still using your iPhone/Android wifi for example. Most of my clients don't use wireless on the corporate lan, so I can use this to jack in and use my tablet without dragging the cord around. It comes with a nice zipper case for cables, AC adapter and the device, though it is slightly larger than it needs to be.It has a USB cord to power the device off the laptop instead of the AC adapter, but it seems like the range is reduced in this mode. The range isn't as good as a larger wireless N device with larger antenna (internal or external)There is no antenna jack for an external antenna. There is a USB port to share with the Shareport utility or use a 3G modem with it, only in router mode. Each mode switch has it's own config, passwords, defaults and so on. I suggest using a labelmaker to record the important settings on the device for each switch mode if they are changed. It supports WPS and has a WPS button even, but I didn't test that since I dislike automagic wizards. The only way I can imagine this being improved is the external antenna jack, a second LAN port for LAN router mode and maybe a battery (ala mifi devices) to run for a few hours without having to find a power cord.

Updated March 29th 2012 - I have been working with D-Link development team and review an updated firmware that is supposed to eliminate a lot of the problems we see today, and mentioned below. I will update this review after testing.I have quite a few end-user devices in my house (nearing 25 at last count) and some of them require Ethernet connectivity. So between this DIR-632 8-port router and two other 4-port D-Link routers (which acts as an Access Point or modified-switch) I have a medium-sized LAN in my networked house. Thus it does not help when your router decides to shut-down wireless transmission (every day or every other day) and you have to physically go down and reboot the sucker unless you are lucky and one Ethernet port is working so you can reboot using the D-Link web-interface.As a network engineer and a long-time D-Link user, I spent 2 months reviewing how to eliminate the problem and then realized there is no work-around because of how the Firmware (1.01NA) is on the DIR-632. I have gotten 3 replacements (2 refurbished, one new) and Tech support (which is typically very good on how fast they respond) provided me development firmware (from their Taiwanese team) to see if the problem would go away and it did not. So prior to returning one of the RMA devices (DIR-632) I utilized an Open-source router firmware called DD-WRT (for this specific router) and the problems (rebooting, dropped connections) never happened again.Summary -1. DD-WRT interface is not for the faint-of-heart but there is enough information out there (on the support forums) to show you how to use it - This is similar to rooting your Android phone or Nook-Color reader etc.2. Another problem with the D-Link router and 1.01NA firmware is that it causes problem with Cisco Network Magic Pro software causing the network-magic service to terminate unexpectedly.3. Overall a bad product despite the 8-LAN ports (which no other vendor offers at this price range) and if you have the heart to use the Open source software then you will be fine. Remember D-Link will not support you ("officially" when you use non D-link firmware), but "unofficially" they agree that the open-source DD-WRT firmware does not cause any problems with D-LINK DIR-632.

I main reason I purchased this router was it stated that the dd-wrt firmware was pre installed. The router works great for the normal things I wanted to do but this FIRMWARE WAS NOT PRE INSTALLED AND TO FURTHER PISS ME OFF WHEN YOU CHECK ON THE DD-WRT SITE IT SHOWS IT AS NOT COMPATABLE. I have contacted the seller and was given no explination on this Just they will send me in the next 48 hours how to return and refund my Money. To make sure that I was not wrong I had a computer teck come in and check and he verified that this firmware was not installed on the router and he checked also at dd-wrt site and it comes up as not compatable.UPDATEI did find that this router was not listed on dd-wrt website But on D links web site found a link to dd-wrt that they said would work. I also found some information that this router was to be discontinued because it had a problem of disconnecting from the internet on a regular basis. I did say that if you reflashed with the dd-wrt that this problem would be solved. I did this and it did go away until I tried to set up an open vpn and it started again kicking me out of the internet on a regular basis. Item was returned waiting to hear back from supplier and a creditThis is the first bad experience I have had with buying off of amazonDD-WRT Router - D-Link DIR-632 Wireless-N, 300Mbps, 8 Ethernet Ports, USB, VPN Ready [DD-WRT PREINSTALLED]

- I had a network where the equipment had aged, but the network was reliable, just did not stream all that well, so I decided to start the upgrade process... I had a complete Cisco/Linksys network (which BTW I have an upgraded Cisco/Linksys network now)- Performance - when it stayed up, it worked well. Catch was keeping it up. Network was constantly going down.- 30 day return policy... Spent the whole 30 days on the phone with their tech support and by the time I finally gave up, the 30 day window had closed. Return/Warranty policy through D-Link does not allow for "advanced replacements" so in other words, you have to take it out of your network to return it... 40.00 lesson learned

I actually bought this to replace a similar class D-Link 4-port wireless router, because I needed the extra ports for a home network that I was setting up, and didn't feel like dasiy-chaining another router on an already cluttered desk. The set up of the router was easy enough to accomplish, but I noticed that its wireless range was a bit less than the D-Link 4-port wireless router that it replaced, with a wireless Blue-ray player no longer able to connect to the network wirelessly with this router. Ultimately, it's not a concern to me, because I hardwired my Blue-ray players as part of my home networking project, but because of the shorter range, I'm giving it only 4 stars.

This is a perfect compact size travel router. I can operate in 3 different modes which is perfect. It will operate as a router which is perfect when operating it in your hotel room to provide the added security that a router provides and it will operate as an access point which is perfect when you are in the office and need to be able to interact with net worked office devices such as printers or scanners. If you are looking for a small light weight travel router that has everything you need I highly recommend this product. I have had this product for over 10 months and have not had one problem. Getting it setup took some time because you have to set it up for each mode. It is helpful if you know how to setup a router directly in the routers setup menu.

I bought it thinking of, wiressly put the devide on the dead spots of my home. Unfortunately, is not the way it works. I have a nice Netgear N900, but still are at my place some few spots where I don't have good signal. For my surprise, I need to connect cables to my existing router to expand the signal. It didn't solve my problem.Besides that, costumer support is terrible. Sent several emails with no answer. For a call support, need to pay USD39.00?? For a USD79.00 product? Crazy! The instructions that come with the Dlink access point is like a joke. Have to research in many sites on Internet to solve my problem, since never got a reply from DLink Customer Support. So, be aware before buy it.I will try AMPED Products, cause DLink, never again.

In my scenario, my goal was to extend the 5 Ghz band from my DLink DIR-825 out to a dead spot in the back porch for Netflix streaming. Now it didn't quite do that as expected but there are some options to work with on the device. There are two modes that can work with the device that a few people might not understand even after reading through the marketing material. The first option what most people might be familiar with is AP Mode. AP Mode can create from where there is a non-existent wireless environment to a wireless one simply by plugging into your existing router and configuring. If your router already has wireless configured and can somewhat extend the wireless signal ever so slightly. I found that the 2.4 GHz band performance had a slight boost but not so much the 5 GHz band I was already running. The other mode that can be used is a Bridge Mode. In this configuration you would plug any devices into the Booster which will act as the antenna for them and then configuring the Booster to connect to the existing wireless in the area. This can increase performance by providing a better wireless antenna that might otherwise be more inferior in some devices that can't quite keep a steady signal. This is where their SmartBeam technology comes into play.A couple of things to understand though...1) You cannot connect a wireless device to it wirelessly and expect the Booster to relay that back to your router in Bridge Mode. They have to use a cable to the Booster first.2) Also in Bridge Mode, if the area that you're looking to expand is dead enough where a particular band cannot be seen or is extremely weak, the Booster will not compensate for it. It needs to connect to it just as any other normal device would.3) Despite the fact that it can support 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, it can only use one or the other at not at the same time in AP Mode.Ultimately in my scenario, I ended up using it in Bridge Mode by connecting the movie player to it and then bridging back to the router on the 2.4 band as the 5 GHz band was just too weak to stay consistent. This still improved streaming performance greatly and left a satisfactory feeling for the purchase. By looking at the stats on the router when the Booster is connected to it and is streaming, there is a higher data rate then connecting devices to the router without it. Overall, I'm happy with the device although the price for what you're getting is just a tad steep. Definitely worth a try if you are experiencing a scenario such as this. I suppose you could always return it if it doesn't work out.

When the item arrived - the set-up was not easy. Mostly because my router is in the basement and the direct computer connection did not work - I had to use the direct link to my router before it came online. Then my wife and I noticed it dropped our connection and made it difficult to re-establish. After contacting the manufacturer - I was able to get a decent consistent signal (had to reset and change the frequency) but it was not very strong. After all is said and done - it works now but not great - I get about a 20% better signal. To be fair it could be my placement I don't see this as nearly as powerful as my router (just a small boost). Probably, better off going with a more conventional bridge (I have no experience with this type so this is a guess).

I purchased this router about 2 years ago. At first it worked great. Within the last 6-12 months I have noticed problems with the connection. It would randomly drop the connection to iPods, iPhones, kindles, iPads, iMacs and my PC laptop.I always use the online utility to set up and update the router. Periodically, I would use the "check for newer firmware" option and it would always tell that I have the latest firmware. So, for 2 years I believed it. I was WRONG!!My firmware was from early 2009, which is what the router shipped with. After being fed up with the router dropping connections, and almost buying another one, I went to the DLINK website and discovered that my firmware was very old and out of date. So, I downloaded all the new firmware and uploaded them to the router incrementally using my laptop and a wired connection to the router(you can't do it wirelessly).Bottom line. DON'T TRUST THE ONLINE UTILITIES FIRMWARE CHECK!! Make sure you have the latest firmware which I believe is from April of 2012 (depending on which revision A1/B1 you have... its on the back of the router). Follow the instructions on how to install it manually and you will be set. After updating, I have not lost a single connection, my wife no longer gets pissed off at our electronics, me and the iMac, and all is good.If you need help with this leave a comment.Joel

I replaced on older 4-port Netgear router with this one because I needed the additional Ethernet ports. The Amazon price of this D-Link product was excellent. And even though I chose to bypass the D-link supplied setup program, the manual wireless network set-up was very easy. Then I discovered that the throughput far exceeded that of my older router, and Internet speed tests are showing an instant increase of about 50% download speed. So I had no idea that my older router was slowing things down so much! Would I recommend this to a friend? You bet I will!

I replaced a 4-port wireless router and separate internet switch device with this one router with 8 wired ports. These ports allow us to connect our many audio-visual devices that are internet devices, but do not have wireless capability. We have been using this router for about 3 weeks now. It works well when it's on and was easy to set up. However, it "dies" while idle overnight and other times about every other day. I have to power cycle the device to get it functioning again.Update: After a month of this thing dying and no easy way to update the firmware, I gave up and went back to my old setup.Do Not Buy.

I bought this router after reading some pretty good reviews on it. I only have 1500sqft one level condo so I thought I'd be ok. First, there is no download for a Mac so no quick setup. You have to direct in to the router. Not a huge deal for me because I know what I'm doing but for most, the settings in there could ruin the router. My biggest complaint is that I have a relatively small condo and I can't even get coverage in the master bedroom and the living room. Terrible coverage. My super cheap Belkin that only had G was ten times better.

we've been using a netgear 4 port router for years on end, and finally have expanded the network beyond 4 computers, which called for an alternative solution. Not willing to bother with network hubs and etc, i decided to try to find an 8 port + wireless router. After countless hours wasted searching around for the limited selection, reading the reviews, contemplating and so forth, i decided to order this one, based on its extremely low price and average reviews, i was kind of ready for what i was getting myself into.installed the router just fine, it caught all the computers, and the wireless. the signal never dropped, but worked EXTREMELY slow. the computers experienced a heavy decrease in website loading, i played with DNS servers, firewalls, etc, and couldnt really get it back to where it had been with the previous router.after reading enough reviews, i decided to take a shot at the DD-WRT open source firmware, and just like everyone said - it worked flawlessly. the instructions can be found with a simple google search, and the setup took less than 5 minutes. all computers are now functioning at their full capacity, and the wireless signal is at full strength with my ipad, macbook, phones, and etc.in short, i would definitely recommend this product, but i think the switchover to DD-WRT is a must.

I had ordered the item after returning a wireless repeater from Ampedwireless that was buggy and kept losing configuration. I saw the claim that this DAP-1525 was just about the closet to plug in and use than one could get, but I was skeptical.Opened the box, plugged it in, followed the directions, literally had the unit up and running inside 10 minutes or less. The latter is really what the experience of end users really should be with such devices. Now, time will tell if problems arise, but so far I couldn't be more pleased with ease of use and speed of the wireless connection to my router. For now, I'd suggest you buy this; especially if you have been burned by less than optimal products claiming to do what this device does, well.My review in short: Buy this, it works as advertised! :)

We had a computer lab set up with donated computers, but had no way to hook them all up to the internet. I ordered the 8-port router and it did the trick! We even added an extender router to it and it works beautifully - able to handle all our routing needs. I can highly recommend the D-Link DIR-632 Wireless-N 8-Port Router!

Yep the setup is all sorts of confusing. Mostly because the day I got this my ISP went down for maintenance (D'OH!) so the entire time I was trying to set it up I thought the router was the problem. That being said, they should have some automated thing that picks out the subnet mask and IP addresses and stuff for you. That was a HUGE pain in the ass to set up. Mostly because I am NOT a techy. I am what you'd call an "average consumer with slightly better computer skills than a newbie".As well, the little antennas are garbage. They are flimsy and come loose ALL the time. If you need to use wifi it's not too noticeable, but I am always causing them to move all over the place and I'm afraid they might just break off one day.Overall, it's worth the money as it seems solidly built and provides constant and reliable internet so long as your ISP can as well. As well as some nice advanced features. But it is lacking in many areas that would turn this from a "nice router" to a "pretty freakin' awesome piece of technology".

So I had to go to a third party and get their firmware from [...] and it has worked flawlessly since. This Dlink company doesn't even support their own products at all and it took geeks to fix their problem.Could never get it to work at all and it kept dropping my computers and Ipad and android phone every few minutes no matter what the settings until the firmware was changed. Note do not upgrade your firmware to the link unless you know exactly what you are doing or it will end up a brick.

I contacted D Link and was instructed the unit was defective. My second unit was defective out of the box.Sadly I cannot recommend this unit and I have since gone with a more dependable 4 port D Link (DIR-655) wireless unit which seems to be working fine. I am disappointed I could not find a better made 8 port unit that fit my budget.

I had to go to another local big box store and pay $125.00 for another router shortly after I bought this one. Very disappointing. the router I have now is stable and keeps a strong signal. This was purchased used from an Amazon partner that did not respond to my request to return it also.

I received the DAP-1525 and followed the instructions to set it up as an Access Point. Using the WPS function I copied my network settings automatically from the router to the 1525. However, following the installation process, I was not able to connect any wireless devices to the 1525. Using the web utility I tried to determine the status of the wireless devices in my home network. But, I believe there was a conflict with the Network Name as it had copied it over as part of the WPS process. So it appeared that my router and the 1525 were both broadcasting the same name and that may have been causing a conflict. Looking back at their installation instructions I located an instruction to disable the wireless network on my router. (This instruction was not part of the steps they published for setting up the AP. It was in another area of the installation guide.) I disabled the wireless network on my router but that did not clear up the issue. I then reset the 1525 with the idea of repeating the WPS process. But following the reset the WPS function no longer appeared to work. I then contacted DLink Customer Support. After many attempts to set up the 1525 they instructed me to return the unit as it appeared to be defective. One very odd thing was that I could enter configuration changes in the setup utility but when I clicked "save changes", the settings reverted back to the original values. So, I would give this a D- for the setup instructions both for the quick setup document which is included and for the more detailed instructions on the CD. And, for this unit in question, I would give it an F for function. It may be that a replacement unit would operate properly but I don't want to spend another 2 to 3 hours trying to get it to work.
