Excellent Purchase For The Money - Go Ahead And Buy It
Like the many of the reviewers, I had a dent in the lid and noticed it as I unpacked the box. That stopped me in my tracks. Feeling the dent, which was dented from the top down, I hit the inside of the lid and the dent popped out, You would have never known it had a dent. Guess I got lucky.
Assembly instructions leave a lot to be desired. If you're not somewhat mechanically inclined and a little bit intuitive, this could be a challenge. I have experience in auto repairs, lots of tools, but what I didn't have that I needed was an extra pair or arms (someone to help holding the grill up when attaching the legs and the rest of the components until the grill was stable and able to stand up on its own. It would help to have a 2nd person helping with the initial assembly. Doing it myself, I slowly and carefully assembled this in 3 hours. I had two things in mind: get it done Right and have it ready for dinnertime so I could cook a nice ribeye.
All of the parts were present, however, I was shorted two of the cotter pins. I didn't discover this until I went to install the little chrome warming grill, which swivels when the grill lid is lifted. The rods that go through either side of the grill take a cotter pin at either end and they were missing. I fashioned cotter pins out of some heavy wire and solved the problem.
Form and fit of the components leaves a little to be desired. The grill lid was not quite aligned correctly but a little friendly persuasion in moving it (basically bending it a little bit) corrected the fit. If anyone id from my era, you might remember a company called Heathkit. If Heathkit had sold a grill, it would have resembled this. A box of parts and instructions on how to put it together... but the quality of the parts would have been better and the instructions would have been very clear.
So how well does it work? First let me say the charcoal tray that is adjustable isn't a new idea. Remember the old Hibachi grills? The charcoal pan wasn't adjustable, but the cooking grill had bracket that would allow you to move it up or down from the charcoal. Same concept. With this grill, according to how much you have to cook on the grill, allows you to put a lot of charcoal on it (all across the charcoal pan) or just the area you'll be cooking on (like a small amount of charcoal for one steak). Say if you're using a Weber grill, you have to use a good bit of charcoal because neither the cooking grate nor the charcoal grate is adjustable (by the way, the Weber charcoal grill is favorite for BBQ smoking and was (probably will change with this Char-Broil for burgers & steaks). You can use less charcoal to get the kind of heat you want at the cooking surface because you can raise the charcoal much closer to the cooking area.
I don't know how long this grill will last, especially considering it's from China, but I'll keep it under a covered deck away from rain and sun. I have a special attachment to this grill since I have 3 hours in assembly and a little pride went into putting it together. IT just might become a favorite grill! If there were more than just two in our household, I would have opted for Char-Broil's larger charcoal grill.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, I already have. Would I buy it again? Yes. I had fun putting it together and for the money spent, I think it is a good value. So how did the ribeye steak turn out? For the first thing cooked on this grill, it was amazingly delicious! Nice grill marks! Didn't have to use a lot of charcoal and the flavor was excellent.

Overall Solid
I understand the reviews about this product are rather polarizing, but hopefully this can clear the air. I was in the need for a grill and I needed one ASAP. I didn't want the standard Weber Kettle because I wanted some space to work along side the grill, and I wanted something with some curb appeal as well that wouldn't break the bank.
Enter the Char-Broil 580. Yes, the assembly instructions aren't friendly to the mechanically impaired, but it was 10x easier to assemble than an IKEA bedroom closet. It took me 2.5 hours and I took a few smoke breaks in between. Only the legs are labeled, the rest is fairly easy to decipher. NOTE: The side panels must be assembled INSIDE the front and rear panels. I think this is where some people have difficulty squaring the rest of the unit.
Took it for it's first good run this weekend, and I absolutely love the hand crank charcoal pan as it allowed me to make better use of the flame and control the heat for different types of meat.
No paint bubbles, no melted vent handles, no damaged temp gauge, etc. Overall I was very impressed and had a great time using my grill. This was 4/5 stars strictly due to the fact that the panels are kinda noisy and the wheels are fixed; no casters. Should anything go wrong with this product in the future, I'll be sure to update.

I have always loved putting things together
I have always loved putting things together, but this gave me such a headache. I had to redo some things, had to figure out that little hole in the corners of the shelves, because the picture just was not clear. I took so much time studying the pictured instructions, words would have been better it took us hours, we had to go to Walmart to buy bolts and nuts that fit the firebox vents, the ones that they sent the nut would not even fit it, so it would not open and close, so we got bigger bolts and nuts, now it opens and closes. We were finally finished, until we realize the thing would only go down half way with the crank. We can not even open the door and stir coals because it will not go all the way down. We took the R-pin cotter out because it was rubbing against the metal things, and the cotter kept come out. We took it apart so much, the cotters are no good and will not stay up. I temporarily have paper clips holding them. Found some cotters at home depot and will go later to replace the staples. I will never buy another one of these. I got it because everyone says Charbroil is one of the best, oh The ash tray does not fit, it falls out. I suggested to my husband we go get some kind of latches to put under there and maybe try to bend the edges, because this looks very dangerous, if this thing falls someone could get hurt. They know we will not want to take these things apart and send it back, that is why they have not fixed these issues, I read bad review way back from 2014 and beyond, some of the same problems on their website.

Great value for the price
Okay guys I just got my new grill yesterday, put it together and grilled out on it tonight. I can say I am in love with it already. First of all when I saw the pictures I thought it would be a really flimsy thing but the stamping that charbroil did on this was very good. They use thin gauge steel but with the folds in the stamping it makes for a really sturdy grill without all the weight. The charcoal tray had these neat raised dividers that help vent air to the coal very evenly and makes for a great cook consistency like you get with propane but with that real charcoal taste that I love. The side work surfaces are strong and have plenty of space for my utensils and my food trays. The wheels and bottom feet are wide enough to make it very stable. The only drawback in assembly is that there are a lot of screws it took me an hour and a half to assemble it but also take in to account that I took extra time to use thread lock on all the screws. this extra time up front will mean that It stays stable for years to go. The ash tray is also nice to make it so that the ash will not fall out onto your bottom shelf and still be able to clean up easily. The tending door is a nice feature too so you can get your coals ready and still add mesquite or oak chips only once your ready to grill so you get more flavor in the food at the peak of the grill time and without having to handle hot grill plates.

I am so glad I took the chance and bought it anyway
I almost didn't buy this grill because of all the negative complaints. I am so glad I took the chance and bought it anyway! As for the instructions on putting it together? No problem at all. The small parts were labeled and yes, it was only pictures with reference to the letters and number but it was easily understandable. I am a 45 year old woman and put it together by myself within 2 1/2 hours and I took my time. My husband had to help with 4 screws to tighten them, other than that, all by myself. All parts were there. I have used it twice and no bubbling of the top lid paint. So far, so good. Maybe some people got a lemon, but mine was perfect. We had to take out the pin for lowering the grill pan because it didn't lower enough to use the front door to mess with the coals. Just have to be careful not to twist handle enough to make it come out, but even if it did, it just screws back in, so no big deal. Other than that, I love it!

Great charcoal grill for cooking and smoking
This is a great grill for charcoal grilling and smoking...steaks definitely taste better than when done on my gas grill. The grill arrived quickly and was much as expected. Took about 3-4 hours to set up...all the parts were well marked so it was relatively simple to do, but slow to assemble. It was worth the effort as it works well and has the features I wanted, with adjustable vents and heat tray that can be raised and lowered. I didn't give it 5 stars because some of the parts (like trays and grill racks) seem a bit flimsy, so we'll have to see how they last. Good buy though on Prime pricing.

Inexpensive, but good
Assembly was not difficult. This grill looks good, but is built inexpensively and is priced accordingly. The side shelves are fixed, but if you are handy you could convert them to 'fold down', or to removable. The frame that holds the charcoal tray is flimsy and is somewhat bending from the weight, so handle it gently. The handles at the front are a bit too long and make it a bit difficult to put the cover on.
Aside from the above, the design is excellent. The ability to raise and lower the charcoal is the best feature, particularly when you sear your meat. The charcoal tray has holes that allow air to circulate, which enhances the grilling. The tray is removable, which makes cleaning easy. The air vents are placed correctly and make it easy to control your grilling. The 580 sq. in. grill area is big enough to do a lot of food. The grill is light and easy to move. We are happy with this grill.

The best charcoal grill I've ever had!
This grill - as many others have said here - took a good while to put together. It wasn't hard to assemble, just many parts requiring sorting and following the guide. The grill itself is the important part. I don't like the bottom ash tray - you have to be much to careful to slide it into the grooves at the bottom - and where the grill bellies out at the bottom, the grooves and the tray are close to the same width and the tray can fall out. If you're careful, it does slide in perfect and works as intended. I don't fret those things when giving a review or the number of stars - those are for the grill's use. THIS grill is the best charcoal grill I've ever used! Being able to raise and lower the coals makes grilling any foods successful. The grates are non-stick porcelain and clean up so easy. The air baffles work - YES! Finally a grill where those things work as intended! I love this grill!

Great Cooker at a Great Price
Since receiving this grill several months ago I have used it at least weekly. With its height-adjustable charcoal pan, numerous adjustable vents and split grate it is an absolute pleasure to cook on. I usually set it up using just one grate and with the coals banked to one side. This allows me to sear meat directly over the coals and then simply slide the grill grate over to the other side and lower the charcoal pan in order to cook with indirect heat. This half grate setup also allows me to easily add additional coals and wood chips throughout the cooking process. This method has worked great with half chickens and turkeys, rack of lamb, boneless turkey breast, pork butt,etc.
Assembly took a little over an hour and was fairly intuitive. I was surprised to see all of the issues people have had with this grill...I suppose I was lucky to receive one in perfect condition. The build quality is good, not great, and I'm not sure how long this grill will last. But given the price, if I can get a few good years out of it I will consider it an outstanding value.

Charcoal flavor with heat control like a gas grill.
Put it together myself at night in about 90 minutes. Took me longer since I was by myself and with a flash light, but I had a cordless screwdriver with socket attachments to make assembly go faster. Only issue I had was one flap on the side panel was bent, so I had to bend it band and flatten it out. Also had to adjust some holes to line up and a little bit of a difficult time with some, but it was my fault do to only having a flash light and my phone. Once put together, just use more charcoal than one thin layer and the charcoal lasts longer than a normal a grill since they sit on a flat tray rather than a grill rack with a lot of air flow. The air flow is sufficient and it burns well and the charcoal lasts longer. Love how I can use charcoal and still control the level of direct heat the food gets!

Charcoal dies too easily due to poor ash collection
Assembly was fine, just took a while. About 4 hours over two days. Biggest issue is that charcoals die too easily, because the spent ashes have nowhere to fall down to. Thus the charcoals are pretty only good for fast cooking, high heat meats like steak. If you want to grill chicken you'll have problems with maintaining heat after 30 minutes. A good charcoal grilled chicken should take about 50 minutes. The charcoal pan should have had holes so the ashes can fall down into the ash tray... I've used my grill about 20 times, and my ash tray barely has any ashes in it. What this needs is a grate style charcoal pan so the ash collector can do its job. Even if you tend to the charcoals through the door, the ashes will build up and have nowhere to go, killing your perfectly good brisquettes. A third party charcoal pan will rectify this, but this should have been designed well from the getgo.

Tray won't stay on- but good other than that
We've only been able to grill on this once. The slide out tray at the bottom that catches ashes isn't large enough to actually slide in and stay. My husband had to get some high heat super glue & washers for it to stay...but then it froze & the glue lost it's stick...so we'll have to weld the washers onto the tray for it to slide in & stay. The temperature gauge also gets moisture in it easily....which is funny to me for an outdoor grill. We keep a grill over on ours to keep it from rusting, etc. If it weren't for that, I'd give 5 stars. It's a wonderful size- can easily grill 6-10 burgers, depending on size. I like that it has two side trays & an adjustable charcoal lift.

I still have my first char- broil grill/smoker I bought 14yrs ago!! The only problem was the wooden shelf rotted away!! So I tried other grills and just received my second char-broil grill today( it's built like the Kingsford one the metal rusted out of in four years, typical I've been told) . It's not flimsy, it moves around easily and has plenty of cooking space for our family of three. BUT where are the hangers for my tongs and spatula?? I guess I can use one of the shelves but DAM it would be nice if there was a place to hang 'em!! Other than that I'm glad to have a new char-broiler AGAIN!!

Ok I was about to give this one star review. Not because of the grill but because of the lack of directions. I'm pretty good at building things but holy smokes was this a puzzle. I spent 4 hours which one of them was just trying to figure out the bad directions. I put everything in a box and sat in the garage. My dad built it for me. It took him a whole day. He did not use the directions. He went by the picture on the box. Now once it's together it's a great BBQ. I've used it twice and love it. Would I purchase it again? No. Because it be easier just to go to a box store and buy one already assembled even if I have to pay a bit more.

Great grill. I really like the adjustable charcoal tray and the pull out tray that collects the ashes. Makes it easy to clean up. Assembly was pretty easy. Good directions with pictures. The only issue I had was that the nuts (D) that go on the screws (A) for the two sets of vents did not screw on all the way so the vents were floppy/not flush on the side of the grill. Luckily I had some nuts that would tighten the vents, so I had a workaround. Only used it once and everyone happy with the outcome of the food.

Don’t believe the hype, the assembly is very basic!
Based on a large number of reviews, I was anticipating a four hour or extremely lengthy Assembly process for this grill. From taking everything out of the box laying it out on a mat piece by piece and assembling it took two hours total. I was taking my time because it was a hot day and I still managed to get it done in two hours. This is a basic and easy assembly project especially if you know how to look at pictures and follow the illustrations as they are on the Instructions. The most you have to have while assembling this grill is a little patience because there are 32 pieces. This Grill turned it to be very nice quality especially for the price.

I'm very impressed with this grill.
Not sure why this grill seems to be divisive. It is made from stamped sheet metal, and its geometry is basically rectangular, so it's going to be a little wobbly. However, the metal is pretty thick and the paint/coating seems robust. I would not describe this grill as 'cheap' or 'flimsy'. The mechanism to raise and lower the charcoal does have a handle on only one side, but it lifts the entire bed evenly and I think it's extremely clever. The only downside is that it took me a little while to assemble. There are a lot of parts and it's all screwed together so it just takes some time. I was very pleased with the finished product; it's definitely more impressive than your standard Weber kettle. I will edit this review if this grill somehow can't cook, but I do not anticipate that being an issue. I'm excited to try the adjustable charcoal bed.

Slightly disappointed
I was so looking forward to my new grill arriving; the box was dented upon arrival and so was the bottom tray by the wheels. I was disappointed in the quality of the grill. It states that it has"480 square inch cast iron primary cooking surface 180 square inch porcelain-coated secondary cooking surface". The grill is a good size but, the primary grill is not cast iron, it appears to be porcelain and the secondary one is not porcelain. My son assembled the grill in about 2 hours, it takes more than the basic tools- he used socket wrench with an extension and adapter.The design works to move the coals up and down but is flimsy, as only one side is secured (supports) and moves the whole tray; I'm not sure how long it will last. It was priced in my budget,( so I guess I got what I paid for) but I would like to see the next grill in person before I purchase.

We had a Char-Broil Charcoal grill previously and loved it. Eventually the ash pan rusted out. Instead of replacing the pan we decided to replace the entire grill for a larger one. We have now used it several times. These grills can't be beat. I hate using gas - I don't want to taste the gas flavor on my food. These light easily, the temperature is easily controlled, food tastes great and cleanup is easy. I love the crank handle for raising and lowering the grate. We won't buy anything else. Oh and we passed the old one down to someone else who is now using it.

Absolutely love this grill
Absolutely love this grill! A bit of a challenge to assemble. Pictures to match up, no wording. And the parts are not marked except for the legs. I did it by myself, but Hubby had to fix a couple of things I had backwards because I am apparently "picture challenged". LOL It is not very portable as the wheels are small and there is nothing to hold on to and steer except the side shelf and that could mean a broken shelf if you are not very careful. I love the cooking grates, charcoal pan and the ability to raise and lower to multi levels all with the turn of the crank which stays cool to the touch. I haven't used our 4 burner gas grill since this one got put together.
