At work we needed a new camera to record tiny scratches and imperfections in our manufactured product, so I took my camera in to demo. Using the standard lens (a macro lens is available but I don't have it yet) we photographed a quarter using only ambient light. In less than a minute we had the image on the screen and were able to blow it up until the date filled the screen and still maintain good detail. As a result we are now buying one for work with a macro accessory lens.
I totally recommend it as an excellent all rounder.

Love this camera. Replaced my Kodak Easyshot with it, which took terrible terrible indoor shots, and have never looked back.

Back to the camera. It is very easy to use. I like the flexibility of the viewing screen, particularly as it can be folded in to the camera, which will protect it. One major plus. I took some close-up pictures of children and was very pleased at the lack of 'red-eye' despite the fact that I had not selected 'red-eye reduction'.
On holiday earlier in the year I took over 400 shots with the A40 on a 512 Mb card with room to spare, so I am looking forward to seeing how I do with a fast (x 150) 1 Gb Transcend when going on holiday shortly. I did note, by the way, that the older camera does respond more quickly with the faster cards, so it is worth checking how fast the card is when buying the bigger ones.
All in all, I am pleased with my purchase and will be interested to see how it handles more difficult situation.
The only down side is that I regard the digital zoom as a waste of time and energy. I find it better to use the optical zoom, then zoom in and crop the pictures on a PC afterwards. Digital zoom just does not hack it.

Unlike previous reviewers, I am an idiot when it comes to photography and although I'm enthusiastic, I am a complete beginner.
I was a little worried that this might be too complicated for me as it appeared so feature rich when I was researching my new camera, but it is easy to use and simply laid out.
The switch to change between taking and viewing your pics on the camera is a little fiddly and feels a little plasticy, which is my only minor issue, but that is really nit picking.
Quality of the pictures is absolutely first rate- it's very easy to select the type of shot you want to take and the shutter speed seems good (though I will be testing it out more at my two year old's birthday party this weekend, so that will be the big trial!!). The camera feels good quality, looks the part and is easy to hold, even with one hand.
I can't speak for more advanced users, but as a complete novice, I am very impressed so far and think it's excellent value for money. Now I can't wait to take more pictures!!

Awesome for the price, and unless you are a professional photographer looking to get published in National Geographic, you cannot beat the value priced A550 for 7.1 megapixels and the Canon name. Fill your family scrapbook for under $200.

digital camera.

Pros:
Small, lightweight
Takes AA's, and only two
Fast start-up and operation
Fully manual mode, useful P mode
ISO up to 800
Great picture quality
Great menu system
Lots of options
Can't beat the price
Cons:
Spotty auto-focus (can tend to hunt quite a bit indoors)
Flash recycle time slow (because of only two AA's, but it's not that big of a deal)
Occasional lens flare inside with flash
---
Overall though, if you're looking for a cheap camera, I think this one is tough to beat. 5 MPs give you quite a bit of detail; if you think you need more than that, think twice, because you probably don't. Excellent picture quality from this camera and it has a great feature set, especially for its price. If you want something smaller or a little fancier try the Canon SD series; however, be prepared to spend more. At this price range, this is an obvious winner.

Downside if any would be the SD Card that comes from the factory has very limited capacity, 16MB only. You ought to have a card with much higher capacity. Overall a brilliant product to own for any level of camera user expertise.

I am also attempting to make myself into a better photographer. For that, the manual controls offered by this camera are perfect. They allow me to adjust only aperture, only shutter speed or aperture, speed, and focus together. It's a great chance to learn what adjusting each of these features does to a photo.
A few final notes. The camera starts up quickly and the time between shots (without flash) is rapid. With the flash enabled, time between shots is a bit longer than I expected, but under 5 seconds. The body of the camera seems rugged, and the extended area over the batteries provides for an excellent grip while shooting. The controls are easy to use and are laid out well on the camera. Overall, a very nice machine for the price.
