I bought this camera after having the powershot A80, which unfortunatley got stolen. I loved th powershot A80, and this camera, being the younger successor to the A80 is also a good camera. It is fast, has good picture quality, the battery life is great and it is a really good camera if you are new to getting into phtoography and want to learn a little more about shutter speed and aperture.
One of my only gripes is that it doesn't seem that great in low light. It always moans at me about taking a potentially unsteady shot when the light is low, and I don't remember the A80 ever being that fussy. But I think it is down to cramming 7 MP into the same sensor size as the 4 MP of the A80, so each pixel becomes smaller, and therefore less sensitive to light.
I have taken some really great photos with this camera, and would only replace it by moving up to a digital SLR, however I would still use it as an everyday carry around camera.
It's metal frame construction makes it quite robust too. I have dropped it on many occasions, once on a solid stone floor, from 6 feet, and aside from a little dent in the casing, it worked fine.
I recommend it!
things i LOVE that i was not looking for...
the rotating screen (i like to throw it in my purse and it is protected)
rechargeable batteries.
My favorite setting is the "kids and pets" with the continuous picture thingy.(i am not a camera expert)...going down a pool slide or jumping of the diving board is GREAT!! all in focus!!
LOVE IT!!!
Edit: I found the source of this problem. My rechargeable batteries were 1850 mAh, I switched to 2500 mAh ones and they last forever. This camera is flawless for the price with that issue out of the way!
* Fast startup
* Image quality (which is an obvious one going from 3.1 to 8 megapixels)
* Ability to shoot images in low light
* The flip open/hide screen is great too. By not using the screen (which is the normal condition when I shoot) it saves battery life.
* The fact that it uses standard AA batteries instead of expensive camera batteries.
* Even the included software to manage the downloads and view/edit images is an upgrade
The only negatives I can think of are:
* Heavy in comparison to other cameras I've had/tested
* Battery life isn't great. That may have to do with my choice of batteries, too.
* It should come with a case
This means, it will not be covered by US warranty if it leaks. Otherwise, no complains.
One plus I found was being able to use regular AA batteries, even though the batteries I had died, I could replace them easily and kept shooting, something I could not do with my other camera which had a special rechargeable battery and charger.
Another thing I was surprised was the 16x (combined 4x optical and 4x digital). Even though I was far away, I could still get a decent picture that was not all that degraded, a substantial gain from the 5x (optical + digital) from my older camera.
even my friends who are into photography and have a number of DSLRs are quite amazed on Canon s80's capabilities!
this is really the best!!!
you will be amazed at how much manual settings this has.
I was supposed to buy a dslr but i wanted a camera that can capture videos..so I opted to find the next best thing... CANON S80!!!
i never regretted buying this.
I am sooo happy because instead of a decrease in market price, i am so surprised to see how much it is now.
i remember buying my camera for 300 something, almost 400 USD but now, it seems that it's around 500. wow!
It takes fantastic quality photos.
Pros:
- it has a good solid feel to it, not too heavy, and with a decent right-hand grip which compacts don't have. It may not be a pocket-sized compact, but it's not exactly a dead-weight either. A good mid-size.
- a 4x optical zoom, conveniently located around the shutter release button.
- very good focussing, and the facility to do your own spot focus. The focussing is faster than many cameras I've seen.
- shutter and aperture priority modes for those who like to experiment, along with a perfectly adequate point and shoot auto mode.
- it has a view finder, albeit just for centering shots. You can't expect the full viewfinder functionality of a DSLR in such a small camera, but it makes a difference to those of us used to looking through a viewfinder, even if you can't see how well focussed it is through it.
- it takes high-speed SD memory, which is necessary for fast photo and video writing.
- the video mode is also very impressive, and you can use the zoom whilst videoing.
- it has a good selection of semi-auto picture modes, including night-time shots, self-timer, and continuous shutter modes. All very easy to set up.
- takes no time to get itself into a ready state.
- picture access is very fast, especially with a high-speed SD card.
- the swivel screen is a huge bonus for when you can't take pictures at head height. It is very clear in poor light and in bright light.
Cons:
- the supplied 32meg SD card is woefully inadequate, although it does get you started.
- the Adapter plug cover is very flimsy, and is difficult to shut with the wrist-strap on. For a solid camera, this is a bit surprising.
- the supplied alkaline batteries will quickly get used up, so invest in a set of 2300 mah batteries with a fast charger.
- as usual, there is no case supplied so you'll have to cough up yet more money.
- the red-eye reduction isn't all that good, but most software can get rid of that.
There is a very comprehensive review on this camera (and others in its range) on [...] which helped me decide on the A620. I am extremely pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone who wants a versatile, quality camera without having to splash out on a larger and more expensive DSLR.
Nearer 5 stars than 4 for this, so 5 it is.
all in all this is one of the best compact digital cameras I have had. No, it is not tiny, but, I am 6' tall and this camera doesn't feel like I am holding a deck of cards and trying to take a picture.
We have two Nikon SLRs with multiple lenses. We like the small size, all-in-one package with flash. I guess we got tired of carrying a big bag full of equipment around. You can't tell the differnce between our photos with the Canon vs. Nikon. The other bonus is cost of operating. No film to purchase and only pay for the prints you want. (Fewer shoeboxes/albums in the future!) We purchased it from Amazon on Sunday afternoon and received it in the mail on the following Wednesday. After reading other reviews, I learned that the memory card that comes with the camera is too small. TRUE! So, back to Amazon. I purchased a 1GB card along with a camera case (a special comination package). Both were a great addition. Thanks to all the people who offered reviews and to Amazon. They had the BEST PRICE I found anywhere, on line or in a store.
Overall, I would recommend it. But the next step up in quality might be worth it, if you are looking for a camera that looks "neater".
Good points. Smaller and lighter than the 990. Very quick to start up. The A640 has a mini-USB link so that getting pictures off the camera is easy. The manual setting is easy to use and is probably the best feature of the camera allowing you to get the best out of it. The flip-out LCD screen makes it easy to get the camera into all sorts of awkward angles. There is little if any shutter lag. Shot-to-shot delay is minimal even using the flash. Battery life is excellent even using the flash and the LCD continuously. ISO down to 800 means that taking pictures in low-light with or without the flash is a doddle.
Bad points. The images are a little more red/yellow compared with the Nikon. Getting the settings right to take pictures in Auto or Manual is more fiddly compared with the 990. Bottom line is that image quality is similar to the Nikon 990 but you have to work much harder to get that quality with the A640. Therefore, probably not much good as a camera to take holiday snaps but a good compromise for me to replace the 990.
I had a cheap digital camera before that just wouldn't take pictures inside. I could put them in a photo software program and lighten them up a bit, but they just weren't good quality.
A lot of my pictures are taken indoors of kids, people and pets. No one ever shows those pictures when they post them as an example though. I was very concerned that if I got a new camera, it wouldn't be too much different.
Thank goodness the Canon A630 takes great indoor pictures even in my low- light living room. It is absolutely amazing. I have a 14x30 ft. living room dining room combination and when I take a picture at night on one end of the room, the other end of the room shows up well lit up too.
There are lots of digital cameras out there that don't take good indoor pictures. This camera is not one of them. I'm so happy I decided on the Canon A630. I can hardly wait to take Christmas pictures with it! I know they will be great.
