Brother's DSMobile Scanner produces great results as a scanner, to take on the go with your laptop. It doesnt plug in, but draws power from the laptop, like when you load up your MP3 player. It's small, about ten inches long, and 2-3inches wide, and comes with a leatherette drawstring carrying case, that also holds the USB/ scanner cord. Along with the scanner, cord and pouch, comes all the software you need, plus a bunch of more common software, which you MIGHT need, and not have. (for example, you can download a trial version of MICROSOFT WORD, and also a free copy of PFD document expansion software.) The whole Scanner kit can have you up and running, within minutes of pulling it out of the box for the first time. You just have to download the scanner software, before you scan your first document. The scans look beautiful. The only problem I had was the first scan i made of some medical document, because I fed the paper into the scanner a bit off sides, so the image came out slightly lopsided. Scans after that, which included color artwork, black and white drawings, and greyscale drawings, all came thru without a hitch.There is a small downside, with this scanner, and no doubt it's obvious. With the large desktop scanners, if you want to scan something out of a book, a magazine, or artwork from a sketchbook, etc, you can lay it flat on your scanner, and it can scan the art or book pages without problem. The DSMobile Scanner however, can only scan SINGLE PIECES of paper. For most of the use a portable scanner like this might encounter, that wont be a problem. These portable scanners were made for scanning almost anything.....exam papers, medical or legal documents that may not leave an office, photos at a friends house who doesnt have digital technology, and pages at a reference library. For the same reason a laptop works well as the portable version of a desktop computer, this scanning stick works as a portible version of the large, heavy desktop printer scanners. The software for scanning was designed for ease of use, by anyone at all conversant with computers. Before you scan, the software asks you the size of the paper, if you want to scan in color, B&W, or greytones, and that's everything. The other software allows you to keep your documents organized, for example, medical documents in one folder, artwork in another folder, or your credit card bills in another folder. Overall, I find that it scans a little faster than my desktop printer/scanner. Almost anyone with a laptop, will get a lot of use out of this device.

I have had three of these scanners. (Shame on me). Each one after about a month's use the paper feeder would not work.

I personally feel that the DS 600 did not deliver what I was looking for in a portabel scanner. I tried to employ this sytem on two computer OS Window Vista and Windows 7 the scanner would not function after I calibrated it. I did a compatibility test and it said it was not capatible with the OS systems, However prior to purchasing it I verified OS capatibility. I would not recomend this to anyone if you are looking at organization invest in a Neat or a comparable scanner.

Bought the Brother DSMobile Scanner (DS-600) to allow me to scan and fax documents from the road that are actually readable. The setup was effortless, and the software is intuitive and simple to use. Scans are clear, and look perfect when printed, emailed, or faxed. Only (minor) complaint is that docs sometimes are scanned crooked, but that may be my fat fingers as much as the unit.

Ok, I was looking for a scanner to rid myself of paper clutter and those magazines that I was saving for one or two articles. I was undecided between the Brother DS-600 or the Fujitsu Scan Snap S1100. Since the Brother was less expensive I decided to try it out. My overall opinion: Could be better would use it in an emergency. It scanned decently but was difficult to keep documents straight as they fed and if I wanted color.... sit back and relax, it could be awhile (about 10-15 Seconds for a color magazine page); B&W was faster. I guess I don't have the patience for this scanner. I'd use it if I had to but I find that I like the Fujitsu MUCH MUCH better. Haven't scanned a crooked document yet and it's A LOT faster scanning especially color (Same page about 5 seconds). The extra money was worth it for the Fujitsu, for me. I rated a 3 stars but would have been 2.5 if I could.

I was really excited to receive this, but from the moment I hooked it up it would not feed. I called Brother support and they said it was defective, but were only willing to offer me a refurbished one and I was to pay for shipping. They also wanted a $50 deposit. Thank goodness Amazon backs their products. I sent (the brand new) scanner back and ordered a Fujitsu that works great. Thanks Amazon!

I was looking for a mobile scanner to take to a customer site and scan in some documents. This certainly accomplishes that. However, it is very hard to feed the paper in straight. No matter how hard I tried it always seemed to be a little crocked. The unit is nice and light and seems to be well built. I have not used any other sheet feeders to compare it to but it just doesn't seem reliable enough at scannign straight to make it worthwhile - especially considering it is not inexpensive. If you have to have a portable scanner that has good resolution then it will do but if you are expecting it to compete with a flatbed then forget it.

We've used this scanner for about a year and a half and it worked fine on Windows 7 32-bit with our medical office program that required a TWAIN driver. But we had a computer crash and had to get a new one. The new one is 64-bit. Our software still only supports TWAIN, not WIA. Unfortunately, the 64-bit driver is WIA only, so now we'll have to get a new scanner. Good product, just a word of warning.

I purchased this DS600 scanner as an alternative to my HP All-in-One which is too big for my laptop bag. The product description and reviews convinced me to buy this item and had it shipped overnight. After downloading the software from the included disc I was dismayed to discover the DS Mobile II software did not function at all on a Windows 7 system even though the included software said that it would. And the Presto! Page Manager was not at all compatible with Win7. I tried to install the software from the Brother website thinking maybe there was a problem with the disc, still the same issues prevailed. After trying for 3-1/2 hours to make it work I finally called the support team at Brother. After an hour on the phone with them there was still not a solution to this issue.They said they would have to send it to techs that were smarter than them and I should receive a call from them in the next 4 or 5 days and presumably if I am lucky I will be at home, in front of the computer when they call. I installed this on an older laptop that has a Vista op system and after a long period of time getting the program downloaded it did work on that system and the scanner itself seems to work well. It is not the scanner but the software that does not work on Win 7 which is what my intended use was.This was my first, and sorry to say last Brother product I will purchase and customer service at Brother is a joke. I will be getting in contact with Amazon in the next couple of days to obtain a refund for this scanner. Highly disappointed in a product that should be a breeze to set up and run and is nothing but frustrating and time consuming.

Unit was DOA. Ruined biz trip when I had to go without it. Fast refund from Amazon though. Even before unit was shipped back. Most likely I wasn't the only one with problems. After initial order, read reviews that were negative. Wish I had read before...

Ill start by saying that the first one I ordered did not work. One of the gears would not engage. However, Amazon proved how spectacular they are. I sent an email telling them it was broken, and I had a new one delivered the next morning!! The new one works perfectly. Very simple to install, and extremely easy to use. The scanner is a perfect size, and has allowed me to be much more efficient at work. I have nothing bad to say about this scanner!!

Just got the DS 600 and I'm really happy with it. It is small and portable and quick to install. It does a great scan job and is perfect for someone on the road. Fits right in the business case along with my audio books, cameras and IPAD, etc. Perfect for a road-warrior platinum like me.Brother DSMobile Scanner (DS-600)

This scanner worked well initially and I was happy owning it, but after few months I started facing issue of paper not getting scrolled above through the scanner making the scanner unusable :(

Don't buy this. I am a consultant who is on the road alot and need to submit scanned receipts for expenses. I had this scanner for 2 months, and loved it until the paper feed stopped working. I handled this scanner like a baby and do not believe the breakdown is explanable due to handling. I fear this fits the rule of going cheap and getting what you paid for in return. I am now replacing it with a more reliable brand.

The software setup is reasonably easy. However, the scanner was dead on arrival. The computer recognized it and the scanner would make some noises, but it absolutely would not feed paper. Seems others have had this problem, also. Spend more money, get better product such as a Canon or Fujitsu.

(Note: See the last line in "CONS".)Initially, the DSmobile performed well, but it quickly developed a line through all of the scans. Tech Support was able to get things straightened out, so, over all, not a bad buy.PROS: * Accuracy is fairly good. * Installation was easy, with no real snags or hang-ups. * The size is FANTASTIC, and could hardly be better, if not for the uncleanable streak running through every single copy. * Operation is easy; several mouse clicks, and you're on your way.CONS: * No OCR, but you can use the OCR in Adobe Acrobat. * Cleaning works, but you want to dig in to the menu system and not give up looking (or , like me, call tech support). * Easy enough to use; it would be great if pressing the button on the device actually initiated a scan with no subsequent menu picks. * Some issues aligning prints. * SOON ENDED UP WITH A LINE THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE SCAN THAN CLEANING COULD TEMPORARILY LESSEN, BUT NEVER REMOVE. ENDED UP EVENTUALLY BUYING A NEW SCANNER AND RELEGATING THIS ONE FOR TRAVELLING-ONLY AND EMERGENCY USE.

All flatbed scanners I own have a white background, meaning that if you scan a business card in a full letter size, the background comes out white. The downside of this is that if there is written stuff on the other side and the paper is a bit translucent, the other side will show up lightly in the scan.This scanner does not have a white background, instead is solid black. The problem is that all scans come out with a black strip on the side. If you scan a business card, a check, a receipt, invoice, etc, you will end up with large areas of black. The downside of this is that if you need to print, you will need to crop unless you don't mind wasting large quantities of toner. Also, if the paper is somewhat translucent, as in the case of regular printing paper, all whites will display a slight shade of gray.The solution to this would be to use another white sheet of paper as backing material. The same way people use gray or dark sheets to avoid having the other side of the sheet appear in the scan on flatbeds with white background. The only problem is the annoyance of using backing sheets to remove black borders and save toner when printing. All purpose of compact scanner is lost with this for me.

My objective was to purchase a scanner that would serve to digitize my documents in college. Unfortunately, I was disappointed twice by this scanner. (I had to return two of them before giving up and concluding that the product itself is flawed.)The first scanner I received would not feed a piece of paper through. The second would feed the paper, but the quality was unacceptable due to the center third of the scan being corrupted by a set of dark lines.Perhaps I received two bad scanners in a row, but I've been permanently dissuaded from buying Brother products in the future.The best thing about my experience was discovering that Amazon's return process is painless and surprisingly simple! So, if you have the time to experiment with this product, then you might as well give it a try and see if it works for you.Good luck.Sincerely,Nick

This scanner is everything we were looking for for work and church use. Here are the things I wanted to know when I was shopping: 1) This scanner can put multiple pages into one pdf file 2) The software is easy to install and scanner is very easy to use. I bought a second one for my boss to use 3) It is USB plug and play, no batteries to die, no warm up time 4) It has a feature that allows you to password protect the scanned files (this has to be done before scanning the document but still great for sensitive docs) 5) it is compact and tucks away into a desk drawer when not used. Only down side is carrying/storage case is great for the scanner but the USB cable will not fit in there with it. Stinks to grab the scanner and forget the cord!

I bought this product for use with business-related receipts and other misc. loose paperwork. The scanner works well, and produces images of good quality. I like the plug-and-play functionality on the Windows 7 platform. My only critique is that the default file type is .tiff, and I cannot figure out how to change the default to pdf. This product may not have this option at all; I haven't been able to find documentation suggesting that it does.

I was looking for a scanner to reduce my paper clutter. I got the scanner but it didn't work. I've contacted brother many times over the last year....not a single reply. Terrible customer service. I'm sure the scanner is great, but I'm sick of the automated email telling me brother will respond to my query in a few days, and then never getting a response. Terrible, terrible customer service.

We were looking for Desktop scanners at work to use in multiple locations in order to scan in commonly used forms. After doing some research, these scanners turned out to be the best value out there. We personally compared this brand to the Neat desktop scanner and this one has less issues. It seemed a little slow at first, but after a few test scans, it got much quicker. We have no complaints yet - this has worked great!

I am very happy with this scanner with one exception. Sometimes it won't pull in the paper by itself. Most of the time, when you insert a sheet of paper, it "grabs" it so when you hit scan it just starts feeding it through. Sometimes you shove the paper in and it shows no interest. Maybe it has a headache or something, I'm not sure. Obviously when it doesn't want to take it willingly, you have to force it. This entails pushing the paper in with one hand while clicking the scan button with the other, which isn't always the most convenient.Despite that small issue, I'm very happy with the scanner. The documents come out very clear and legible as PDFs. I've scanned a variety of things with no problem. Receipts, credit reports, mortgage documents, sketches of cats, utility bills, newspaper clippings, sympathy cards, business cards, playing cards, W2's from 2009, insurance policies, crayon drawings of cows, parking tickets, insurance policy cancellation confirmation letters, subpoenas, break up letters, private journals, and take out menus.

This sounded like just the thing for my husband to use as an OTR Truck Driver to scan his various receipts in. The reviews were mostly good so I'd thought I'd try it... The size was good and it was easy to start using however there are no instructions on how to use it or what it should do. We assumed it was supposed to pull the paper through (which it didn't). Tried to push it through and that didn't work - after an hour spent trying to figure out what it was supposed to do I finally decided it was broke. We returned it which was an easy, seamless process. I had no problems in that area whatsoever.
