good for small jobs and photos are surprisingly good. However, it has a tendency to feed off to one side or the other and sometimes you have to scan several times to get a decent scan. Great size if you want to carry it with your computer

Chose this as it was rated pretty well. It arrived and I followed directions. Thank goodness I read some of the reviews as I would have missed a couple key instructions (example: don't plug it in until you have software loaded). The packaging/included material does NOT include a clear "getting started" type brochure or booklet, rather a pile of "stuff" that you have to load the CD and read to see what to do with..again, without previous reviews I would have done it wrong by plugging in the scanner first.BUT...enough about that, the issue that earns this 1 star (couldn't give it 0 stars)...is that it was DOA. China strikes again. Not only did it not work but I waited 20 minutes to talk to someone at Brother who read me a checklist (blow air into it was one of the steps) after which they concluded it didn't work (knew that already). Their comment was "oh, we have a one year warranty so you send it back and we hold $50 and we'll ship another". So let me get this straight. After wasting 40 minutes of loading software, trying all sorts of stuff to get it working and then waiting 20 minutes for someone to read me a list you want to PUT A HOLD ON MY CARD in order to try to send me one that works. Right. No "gosh, how embarrassing it wouldn't work", "I'm sorry to waste your time". No..."let us hold $50 since we can't trust you to ship the useless broken pile of Chinese cr_p we sent you back". Returned. No more Brother for me.

I purchased one of these for scanning documents and reports on my travels. It stopped working after only a few scans. I contacted Brother to send it for repair as I really liked the compactness and good quality scans. After several attempts at contacting Brother by email on their product support address I received NOTHING back. I gave up and now it is a paper weight. I accept that things go wrong, but it is just unforgiveable that they will not even respond. It was still in warranty at the time and was registered. For that reason alone I will never buy a Brother product again!

I use the the scanner for 15 days in is NO working...is any guarantee ? because is expensive and no one email me about thereturn.. I bought it on Oct 27 2012.

Hey Brother poeple...My scanner keeps giving me a "Calibration failed" Now you want me to buy a calibration sheet which is basically a sheet with black and white bars. How about making the PDF available for people who cant used the scanner they bought because they did not keep a black and white sheet...I left an email and have not heard from them.Not crazy about my purchase, I should return it and buy another one.

I purchased this last November and have scanned in 100's of documents. It works well and I am extremely pleased. I am scanning all my paper records, bills, receipts, taxes, everything I used to keep in the file cabinet. So far no problems - I have not used this for photos, so I can't comment. This is perfect because it is small, has a USB into my computer and doesn't require an outlet. It beats the scanner I had on my printer for speed. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a way to clean up the clutter on their desk.

I ordered this item with some aprehensions but this little device is working great for the limited use I have for this. I am not big in scanning anything but when I have used it, it worked fine and met my purpose.

Works well; very portable...it comes with in it's own carrying bag which is nice as it keeps dust out of the scan area. Can only scan 1 page at a time, otherwise it's excellent.

I purchased my first DSmobile 600 in 2007 when it was under the Pentax brand, and I picked up two more last year for my son's schoolwork and for my office. I continue to be impressed with the quality, support, and ease of use of these scanners. The Windows 7 calibration problems mentioned elsewhere in these reviews appear to be gone in more recent drivers, and the TWAIN drivers also (at some point) added auto-crop and deskew, which makes receipt scanning a breeze. Brother continues to support and improve on the software behind this product to a level I don't often see from other similar companies.For reference, I run both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7, and I haven't had any problems recently on either version.Note that many receipts use a thermal paper which tends to overexpose with heat/sunlight. Either scan these receipts quickly, before that happens, or clean and calibrate the scanner regularly. I've found that a simple calibration can often improve the image quality quite a bit without the need for a full cleaning. Calibration has even helped with (but not solved) a problem on one of my scanners which was slightly damaged due to a staple I didn't see.

I wanted a simple, easy to use scanner that fed itself and made good quality scans. This is perfect. It's not super fast, and it isnt always perfectly strait, but it allows me to scan to either a PDF or picture depending on what I need. I have cleaned off my desk of paper, and I am now using it at the office organizing and keeping up with everything there! I love it and now everyone is borrowing it from me. I think I will get them one for Christmas this year. It's inexpensive but does a really good job. Very portable, plug it into the USB port and scan! I returned the Neat scanner. It filed into their files and format and to move them out and merge with files I had received etc was to overcomplicated. this is much more simple if you know how to create your own filing system.

Like the other reviews said, this scanner has a problem passing document through straight. It does a good job aside from that though. Most likely if you just want to scan a copy of a receipt or something this is good for that. If you are running a business where quality counts though you may want to consider a different one. I do like the small amount of storage are that it takes and it runs very easily on a laptop on battery power. I was afraid it would drink the battery but it really doesn't

Scanner is really easy to set-up and really easy to use, it's been working great since I picked it up. Price point on scanner is really cheap for the quality you get.

Brother makes a decent product. But they sure missed the mark with this one. I wanted a light weight portable scanner. This looked like the perfect item. Delivery was fast, as usual, and I was excited to use this for the office. Mmmmaaaaannnn.... I was pissed when the scanner made the loudest noise attempting to calibrate. There are these black and white cards that you have to scan in order to calibrate.... Sure. If the dang feeder would take the calibration card then I'd be able to use it. Unfortunately.... This "scanner" now just sits in the box in my office. I missed the date to send it back by one day. Bad on my part... But horrible on Brothers part for making a crummy product.

This is a very light weight compact unit. I have taken it all around North America without a single hitch. Read the directions before plugging in and you will have a useful tool too take anywhere.

I purchased this scanner with the intention of using it for school work while I was away working overseas. Unfortunately, I was never able to do that! Straight out the box this scanner did not work. I installed the software very easily on my Windows XP machine and attempted to make my first scan to test out this scanner. For some reason the scanner that I received would not feed through any paper. I tried multiple times with various shapes and sizes of paper but, to no prevail. It seems like the motor inside of the unit that I received would not engage the paper. I read the reviews right here on Amazon thinking that I would give this product a chance since there were so many positive reviews. I however seemed to have received one of the bad eggs in the crop. For a scanner of this price I think Brother should do a better job of ensuring that the end user will receive a working product. In my opinion you can take a chance to purchase this but, the probability of receiving a bad product does exist, more than one would think. I don't intend to buy any other products from Brother. I returned this immediately and purchased the Fujitsu SCANSNAP S1100. It's more expensive but, at least I know I'm getting a product that at least WORKS brand new out of the box. SMH, Brother dropped the ball big time!

I spent a couple days researching scanners and ultimately ended up purchasing this one. Best decision ever! It's very light and portable which is great for someone on the go. I have probably already scanned a few hundred documents and they have all turned out great. You can scan in black and white or in color which comes in handy. It can scan receipts, business cards, diplomas, etc. Best little device around. I highly recommend it.

The scanner itself is very nice. It scans well. I was not so impressed with the installation instructions. First of all, there aren't really any installation instructions - just put in the disc and do what it says. I am a Mac user and the Mac software was out of date. The screens I was seeing on my computer did not match what the disc said I would see. I finally had to call Brother where a kind associate helped me get the software I needed and actually make an installation on the computer. Additionally, I would have preferred that the title of the icon for the scanner reference either Brother or "scanner". The icon for the scanner is called "image capture". It's not a bad thing, just one more thing for me to remember when I want to use the portable scanner. Since I don't scan all that often, it will never become a habit.

I'm glad I finally stepped up and bought this scanner. I was eyeballing it for about 6 months when my all-in-one Epson wouldn't scan anymore because the print portion of the machine ran out of ink(??!?).Needless to say I wasn't about to buy into that trap. So I ponied up my hard earned cash after reading the reviews here and I have to say my money was well spent.I need the scanner to take on the road with me and so far, just using it on my desk is a breeze because the unit doesn't take up hardly any space.Keep in mind, I'm using the DS-Scanner for document scans, not artwork or pictures yet, so I can't comment on alternate usage right now. I will post a followup in the future once I have a chance to archive some family pictures.Kudo's to Amazon fulfillment, the scanner was shipped quite quickly and I didn't pay for upgraded shipping. Amazon is hit or miss in this regard, but I always appreciate when they ship purchases without "artificial" delays.

The DS-600 scanner is a super light-weight scanner that barely takes up any room on your desk. I admit that when I opened up the box and saw this scanner, I didn't expect it to work all that well - it seemed too small and too light to do a good job. However I was pleasantly surprised.Although it's tempting to connect everything at once, there is a warning that you must install the driver and scanner software before connecting everything. The CD-ROM offers the install in several languages and it is very easy (and quick) to install everything needed.I scanned several documents of various sizes - a one page black and white document in a very small font, a take-out menu, a business card, some pages in bright colors with lots of contrast, and several photos. All documents scanned perfectly - the small fonts of one document were clear and scanned to match exactly the existing document. For the color documents - the one document with bright colors and high contrast and the photo (with faded colors) were identical to the original documents. Note that you can't modify the documents (for example, some scanners provide options to tweak photos - that's not available here.)You can save documents in PDF, JPG and TIFF format. File names and locations are easy to change. You can save documents in these sizes: letter, legal, A4, B5, A5, A6 and Business Card. There are options and settings that you can customize, but you don't need to - it works perfectly straight out of the box.Documentation (besides the piece of paper that warns you to install the product before plugging in the scanner) consists of a ~50 page User Guide in PDF format that's on the CD-ROM. I'd say "User Guide" is a misnomer as while it does a good job describing how to install (for Windows and Mac systems) the scanner driver, Dsmobile scanner, and PageManager, it barely describes how to "use" the scanner (besides connecting it, calibrating, and clicking the desktop icon). The DSmobile scanner comes with two 4x6 sleeves which besides telling that you should clean them, are never described (I'm assuming you should use them to scan photos as that's how I used them). The scanner's options and ability to customize also aren't documented. Luckily the product is easy to use.The CD-ROM also lets you install PageManager vsn 7.x which you can use to view, organize, edit, and send your digital files. I didn't play too much with PageManager, but it appears easy to use.With a carrying case included, this is one scanner that you can easily take with you. If you want a scanner that doesn't take up a lot of room and does exactly what it should, check out the DS-600.

I returned this scanner after one use, and I believe that the one I received had some defects.Installation was fairly easy. The very brief instructions make it clear that you have to install the software FIRST before connecting the scanner. The software disc has a more detailed PDF guide.Pros:- It's slim, good for travel, and the carrying pouch is included- The power source is your computer through a USB cord (included)- The scanner is very quiet and barely makes any noise when workingCons:- The power button has no light or indicator of any sort to let you know when the scanner is on. My scanner was slow to power up and sometimes the button did not seem to respond, but I believe that's due to a defect.- You can only feed ONE page at a time. If you're trying to scan multiple receipts or pages into one PDF document, you feed one through, wait for a screen to pop up, click "continue" and feed the 2nd page, and so on. All in all, pretty time consuming.- The scanner does a terrible job at detecting an inserted document, especially if it's a receipt. With almost every receipt, I had two error screens pop up, one telling me the scanner could not detect a page, and the other one asking me if I wanted to proceed. When I clicked "yes", it would actually scan the receipt, but it was very annoying to have to click through the pop up screens all the time.- Other times, the scanner seems to think it's scanning something when there's no document being fed through...and it does not stop until it scans for a pre-set amount of time.- With folded and bent receipts, it took me 2-3 tries to get a semi-decent scan, and even then, the image in the PDF file was crooked and not 100% clear. The scanner seems to have an especially difficult time with folds and starts pulling through one side of the page quicker than the other.- Most documents do not feed through straight since there is nothing guiding them- Anything you scan has to be clearly printed with dark ink. This scanner does not really detect lighter ink, faded lettering, etc.
