I originally bought this to troubleshoot an Imac that was problematic. Worked great and seemed cooler and quieter than the original. Unfortunately the Imac had other issues. I disposed of the Imac and put this drive in my Windows7 x64 PC. Definitely a snappy little drive. Really little. It has a very large heatsink to make it fit in a standard hdd slot. It doesn't seem to need the heat-sink as it runs pretty cool anyway. I really feel this is the best drive out there outside of SSD's and maybe even still.

The drive worked well enough for install so all of the software was activated and running. Then after about 3 weeks, the drive started slowly losing integrity with more and more data getting corrupted. I was able to salvage most of the data; however, this kind of failure should never happen on a drive with specs that quote a very high MTBF. WD would not refund money for this drive as the last thing I wanted to do was try this experiment again but Amazon issued a refund less $50 as it was now 'open box'. Then of course the software reactivation issues were a problem. A failed drive is not worth the headache. While the performance was great during the brief period it worked, I have to say I don't trust WD to put out a reliable version of this drive. I was at least lucky enough to get the client's data off it before it went out completely. Part of my business is building workstations for CAD and this kind of failure set me back with my client plus $50 out of pocket. It's clear now that the MTBF spec is a theoretical number only and not representative of shipping product.

I'm glad that I ordered this hard drive. My old one had a bad surface sector and slowed down ridiculously. After installing and loading the operating system I am really satisfied. What a difference!

This is my first 10,000 rpm drive and I was looking for speed without the expense and problems of an SSD drive (2 ssd's died a fast death.) This drive is fast but is very noisy. You will know every disk access as you get plenty of noise. Bootup sounds like its making popcorn. Yes, its defraged..... But overall, I'm happy. I got what I wanted (faster boot time,) and so far, no problems. Would buy another 10k drive, but may look at one that does not make popcorn while saving my data.

Western Digital Velociraptor 600 GB SATA III 10000 RPM 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard Drive - WD6000HLHXDrive came in as ordered, right on time. The inside packaging was no up to par but so far the drive has shown no damage. Plugged it straight into my new Mac G5 Tower, formatted the disk and we are flying. My computer starts up fast and I've had no issues with this drive. I would recommend this drive.

Pro: Fast for a platter drive. Nice casing.Con: We had a pair and they wouldn't RAID (Intel Matrix) without a firmware update. After update they worked fine.

WESTERN DIGITAL 600GB VELOCIRAPTOR 3.5INCH 10000RPM 32MB CACHE SATA6.0GB S BARE WD6000HLHXTo me is happening the same case as the previous person I have installed an ASUS Crosshair motherboard Extreme IV with a processor 1090T 6-Core AMD and had installed 2 1TB Samsung hard drive 7200rpm 32mb HD103SJ and regulate my machine was running I got the idea purchase this velociraptor and the truth is I am very disappointed with the product and I see that my machine runs just as before and the evaluation of Windows 5.6 not changed I'm no expert in the field of information and I really believe that something is working as it should be but of this I can blame both as WESTER DIGITAL ASUS since the first manuals and bios updates are almost impossible to understand and I will fulfill a year with this card and I find no way or form bios and disk 2 comes with no manual or installation package that teaches how to make the most of this unit since the beginning if I had said I had to buy 2 or 3 units to get more speed velociraptor had not wasted my money because so far with the Samsung I had done well and worth a third of what the unit cost Velociraptor. I wish someone could explain me the process of adapting the system to see if I can get something out of this. And I recommend to others advice very well not go to waste money and I lost it at this point I can not return ...

Unit arrived in a bare box containing just the drive. So if you need cables and mounting hardware be prepared. But once the unit was installed it has worked completely to my satisfaction and as advertised. With the discount offered it was a worthy purchase and I recommend the product.

i just finished building my first computer (self taught)and i decided to add another hard drive so i got this one. this hard drive is fast and the main reason i got this drive is for video games which will allow the games to load faster. i only ran into one problem with this product (this is most likely because im still a noob). after i installed the cables and after my computer automatically installed a driver for the hard drive, i was unable to use/see the hard drive when i click on "my computer". after some research through the web this is what i found that helped me. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press R to bring up the Run window. Type compmgmt.msc and click OK. In the Computer Management window, click on Disk Management. Look for the new drive in the right hand pane (it should be listed below your C: drive). Right click anywhere on the disk and choose New Simple Volume. Click Next. Keep the default size setting, which will use the whole disk, and click Next. Choose to Format the drive with the NTFS file system and use a drive letter. Finish the wizard and allow the format to complete.

Expensive, relatively mediocre performance (as compared to other platter drives, greatly outperformed by SSDs) and worst of all, unreliable.The first drive I received was DOA. After returning it, the replacement lasted for about 6 months before dying completely as well.Just get a regular platter drive and save some money, or go for an SSD for performance.

Installed without a hitch, runs silently, and can load worlds (Skyrim, WoW, etc.) on the fly. I would say its better than a SSD for gaming use. Now it's gonna be difficult to ever use anything else.

There was another review that had a bad drive as well in June 2011. It is most likely a bad batch of 600GB Raptors or they came from a case that was dropped. Amazon, Western Digital and Electronics Direct are good companies and will take care of this issue. I normally do not write something unless there is a reason. I will be buying another one from a different vendor. If there are issues with that one, I will post an update. I have been in IT for over 25 years. My experience has been that even if you have a working drive from a batch with a higher percentage of bad drives, there is a good chance that the drive could fail earlier than its regular life cycle.

I've been a huge fan of these drives for a long time. Albeit I had a few of the 80Gb versions clunk out, the larger ones so far have been solid. I replaced my 640Gb 7200RPM drive in my iMac with this 600Gb 10k RPM. Combined with OSX Lion, I basically got a new computer.

I normally build servers with SAS 15K drives, however for small user count servers with cost a consideration, these SATA 10K enterprise drives provide an acceptable solution. Thanks to WD

My Raptor arrived DOA!!!Just a clicking noise over and over again. First and last time I buy Computer stuff from Amazon. Great return policy but would rather have a working drive. Guess it is back to the other website I used to buy from.

This is a great drive, does everything advertised but be forwarned it needs to be formatted. It is a fairly simple but time consuming task. Do not plug it in and expect there to be a drive letter!

I ordered two drives with one day shipping from onSale via Amazon at 8:56 PM EST.At 11:34PM I get an email that it shipped. I got them at 12:30 next day. Wow! The drives are bare (meaning just the drive, no manual, cables or retail box). But I just needed the bare drive because I was replacing existing drives. I had the 300GB drives in another computer and they make the system a lot faster. It's worth it.

I bought this to try an idea I had, running a virtual machine from an external esata drive. My lenovo has a 128gb SSD drive, too small for a decent virtual setup, so I needed something external that was powerful and fast. I have been using WD Raptors in an old server for years with excellent results. So when I saw the Velociraptor and the great price on amazon I bought it to see. A great call, the performance is excellent, and it runs my VMs as if they were internal drives. Highly recommend this drive for whatever your needs are, has excellent speed and is very quiet.

Fantastic performance and cheaper than going with a SATAII RAID 0 option. If you have options for SATAIII, this is the best choice for write speed. I'm using as my mail file storage, with a SATAIII SSD for my OS and Program storage (ie READ speed)
