I have had many drives, but wd is for me the most reliable.Quiet, not as fast as my other drives, but there is a lot more storeagecapability at 1/3rd the price of the other drives.

Never buy Maxtor which fails quite a bit. Western Digital has been very reliable. I use this one at work in my file server for ghost imaging. great product. highly recommended.

I put two of these in my D-Link 323 for a NAS. They are configured RAID 1. Nothing eventful to say about them. They work great so far. I'll be sure to update if they fail.

Drive is working so far, but too soon to comment on it's quality.BUT the packaging was miserable! Appalling! A little piece of plastic with an inflated bubble that was sitting beside, not surrounding, the drive. Not even peanuts! The drive was sloshing around in the box as if it were an unbreakable chunk of solid steel. Could shock have caused a minute crack in a lead or a solder that will shorten its life? I'll never know - and the fact that I can speculate about that is a black mark on Amazon. New Egg has become noted for bad packaging of OEM drives and I guess Amazon wants to keep pace.

I got this on some kind of fire sale for about an hour where the 640gb blue was on sale for 38 dollars and free shipping. As far as I can tell it works great (I put in in the gfs computer as the main drive using Arconis true image).If its ridiculously on sale buy it, if not the egg has better deals on harddrives

I should have read the prior reviews more closely. Yup, no cable, CD program, instructions, just nothing but drive. You better know BIOS and computers well or you'll wind up with less hair by pulling it out. At least I had mounting screws in my garage. With my luck the darn thing will be a faulty drive I suppose. Don't expect any help from Amazon besides returns. Amazon just ships not explains. At least my friend told me were in the setup you have to go to turn on drive 1 port. GGGGGRRRRRRRRR. If you need help, go to the Western Digital web site.

Bought it for a build. Attached it using the cable (that came with Motherboard). BIOS recognized it first time. Installed Win 7 (RC) on it and was up and running within 2 hours. No issues.The only issue is that Windows 7 rates it at 5.7 (and its the slowest rating on my machine).

Update - The 1 TB model (WD10EARS), works fine in an Antec external drive case(used with Windows XP). No jumper changes or software reconfiguratin was needed..============After bad experience with three WD HDD's (two laptop and one 250gb sata) - all in USB enclosures, I was really hesitant to go with WD any more. Gave it one more shot and boy - am I pleasantly surprised.I first thought that I'd forgotten to plug in the power cable but when I picked up the drive, I knew from the gyro effect that the drive was indeed spinning away. No vibrations, no sound, even when reading and writing data. By far, the quietest drive I have owned to date. Runs cool but this is in a tower case with adequate ventilation. In terms of speed - plenty for all my video editing and other media needs.This drive will be my main data workhorse. Hopefully it'll fare better than the earlier 3 humming noise WD's.

This is a reasonably fast drive, has been reliable, and just works. It seems to me that a middle-of-the-road hard drive is at its best when does what it's supposed to. This drive seems to do just that.

Due to impatience, I bought this drive to set up redundancy on my Netgear RND2150 ReadyNAS Duo 500 GB Desktop Network Attached Storage since the specifications are identical to the Seagate HD already in use and another Seagate drive was not available via Amazon when I needed it. Only after ordering it did I bother to check to see if this drive was on the approved hardware list for the NAS and naturally, it was not recommended, and just as naturally, I installed it anyway. One of the known problems according to Netgear was a propensity for erroneous overheating messages but I haven't encountered any difficulties thus far even though the NAS in X-Raid (basically RAID 1) configuration runs 24/7. In fact, when I check, this drive consistently reflects a temperature reading 3 degrees Celsius less than the Seagate drive that came with the NAS.As other reviewers have mentioned, it is an OEM package lacking instructions, software, connector cables or mounting screws, however unlike OEM drives from some other manufacturers it is securely packaged so the likelihood of damage in shipment is significantly reduced.As a swap out for a smaller drive or one that is failing, this looks to be a reasonable and economical option.

I have only had this drive running for about 3 weeks now but so far am very satisfied with it. I have had several Western Digital drives before and for the most part have been dependable. The only problem I have with the purchase is the way the product was packaged and shipped, in a box with a air filled shipping pillow. The drive itself was in the typical static bag, but otherwise no protection.

I have had the hard drive for about 2 months now. It seems to be working well and was easy to install; however, I have noticed that it is getting louder when it is running. Hope this does not mean it is going out. Maybe not. The transaction went very well. I was pleased in the speed of receiving the product. I would buy frm this seller again.

I am really glad I got this product. It holds an amazing amount of space (obviously). The only thing I wish I had checked was the dimensions a little more carefully because it is a bit larger than my other hard drives and thus does not fit in the drive bay. But this was my fault since I didnt check the dimensions. The only other thing I am not happy about is the humming sound it makes, it isnt very loud but when you notice it, you keep noticing it.Overall though, I am really satisfied with this product and would definitely recommend it to others.

The HDDs of the Western Digital Caviar Blue series were made by simple renaming. They had used to be called Caviar SE16. One of the early drives, produced before the series was renamed, is shown in the photo above. Later models got a different label that is designed to resemble the new series but is blue, of course. The label is the only change, though. The contents of the HDD case are the same. By the way, this model was the world's first 640GB drive to begin selling in shops.Do you need a drive for server loads but don't want to pay for enterprise series models? The Western Digital Caviar Blue was the fastest in our server tests, outperforming its Black series counterpart even. Overall, it is as universal as the Caviar Black but its performance and power consumption are lower.

I've been completely satisfied with this model of hard drive. I actually replaced the comparable Caviar Green model. I found this one to be far quieter than the Caviar Green model. Actually, the sound that the Caviar Green produced was far too loud for me.

Just got this in the mail. Lickety split as well. I was pleasantly suprised, after reading other reviews, that it came packaged quite securely in a pair of shock-absorbing endcaps. But as others have mentioned, this OEM drive comes with nothing! Nothing! The drive and that's it. I am ok with it, I know what is what, but its something to be sure to be aware of. Looking forward to getting it up and running soon. Will update with performance in the future.

This seems to be a fine drive to me - 7200 RPM is appreciated with the storage size. I used this to add some additional space to my HP MediaSmart EX470 (recently bought) and for the folder duplication. The drive added no noticeable extra heat, except during drive balancing, when the heat nearly doubles. Very quiet.Some other posters have indicated a need for "initialization." Perhaps this means formatting? Not sure, but this is something easily done in Windows. As for the MSS EX470, the new drive was recognized immediately and formatted in less than 15 minutes. I was expecting a much larger amount of time.Only had the drive a few days now, but will report any future troubles. Perfect drive to replace a failing drive or to add storage to existing systems. Honestly, I'd even buy it and a separate SATA cord for less than the retail package...

good product, good price. only reason i did not give it a five star is because this HD requires a molex to sata power adapter (it's cheap) sold seperatly, it could have been sent with the HD (even if the HD where to cost 2-3$ more)

I actually had this hard drive shipped to my son as he needed a new one. His has crashed and he couldn't afford one himslef at the time. It was a gift. I have always trusted Western Digital and the shipper did a great job in getting it to him very quickly.

Ordered two WD 500GB drives for a RAID addition to my computer. After looking at what was offered, I ordered the WD5000AAKSP identified as OEM and the same drive, for $8 more, shown in the retail package. I received two OEM drives, each in the anti-static wrap, in a plain brown box, with none of the expected manuals, jumper info or any instructions for the one thought to be retail. Drives are identical, except for countrys of origin, Thailand and Malaysia. Arrived quickly, but should ship what is pictured. Waiting on response from customer service.

I build computers as a hobby. Why pay for someone else to build one (one size fits does not fit all) when building your own is not too difficult and you can build with quality parts tailored to your own specific needs. Case in point, the WD 640GB HDD. Large hard drive prices are economical right now. Generally speaking, the larger the drive, the less the cost per gigabyte (GB). At Amazon's prices the WD 640GB drive was about $10 bucks more than the WD Caviar 16 320 GB drive with the same cache. Western Digital has recently color coded their drives: Black (high performance), Blue (mainstream) and Green (no brainer: ecologically friendly-for a hard drive). Where does marketing get these ideas? The Caviar 16 640GB falls into the Blue category. It is amazingly fast and quiet, thanks to its 16 MB cache and 3 Gb/s transfer rate. The technology is interesting in that WD utilized two 320GB platters which gives this drive an edge as compared to say 750 GB drives with similar cache size. The drive itself is nearly silent and the quietest HDD I have used. Its rated over 90MB/sec read and write speeds, which is very fast. Yes there are faster hard drives, but for the money this drive is an excellent choice.My only complaint: the drive is warranted for 3 years not 5.Amazon had the lowest price I found, and shipped the drive quickly. Turn around time from placing the order to delivery at my door step was four days. Stable, reliable and excellent price to performance ratio, this drive is a great choice for everyday computing needs.

Like other people here, I had no trouble at all with my WD hard drive until one morning it suddenly, unexpectedly died. A steady clicking sound meant drive head failure -- mechanical trouble that, in two seconds, wiped out 500GB of data.Buy all the cheap WD hard drives you want, but make sure everything on them is backed up!

Installing, formatting and partitioning the WD6400AAKS in my late-2004 vintage PowerMac G5 was a breeze. I bought it to increase the storage capacity rather than the speed of one of my two internal drives. To ensure compatibility with the older computer, I installed a jumper to reduce the maximum transfer rate from 300MB/s to the first generation SATA maximum of 150MB/s. (This may have been unnecessary.) Even with this modification, benchmark tests show read/write speeds, both sustained and random, for the new WD drive ranging from 30% to 60% faster than with my second drive in the same computer, a Seagate 160GB SATA I model. I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars only because it is too soon to judge its durability. So far it exceeds my expectations, and the price was great. Amazon service also was great.

Inserted two of these into a Rosewill USB enclosure for backup purposes - not RAID, but JBOD.I still have 400+ gb on each drive to use up, so there is plenty of room to grow. Fast and quiet and so far so good. They don't run hot, but I have to credit the Rosewill enclosure for that.WD is the way to go for drives. Pretty sure every drive I have in every machine is a WD at this point.

worked great, only thing that kept it from 5 stars was lack of mounting screws. make sure you order a sata cable if you don't have one. I am using as back up drive for now.mounted quickly, plugged in power and sata cable and restarted computer. hit f1 to make enter setup, made sure it found drive, then saved and rebooted. once xp was back up right clicked on "my computer" then clicked "manage", clicked "disk management" on left tree, found drive in window, needs to be initialized and formated which I did by right clicking on it and clicking initialize. then clicked action up top and format to set my partitions. took about fifteen minutes to format and then it was good to go.

My old drive crashed with a virus and I didn't have a very current back up:(Don't make my mistake, keep you're data backup up!I bought this one to use while I retrieved my old data off old drive.This disk comes with no sata cord or instructions. But GREAT price.I plugged it in and let it format the drive over night.I couldn't believe how cheap it was. It is a little louder than my old drive, but it's 10 TIMES the storage.I was a little shocked at how bad the failure rate seems to be on hard drives, especialy external drives. Maybe people only complain and don't compliment. I've only had this drive for a month or so. I hope it lasts!

I bought this drive for a new build becasue, for the price, it's hard to turn down. However, when i tried to install windows on it, it wouldn't install, and the instillation would either freeze or give and error and stop. It didn't help that the error messages led me to believe that the problem was with the install disk, not the hard drive. This gave me a ton of stress, and after about 2 days of trying to install windows i tried linux, which also gave me errors, that proved my windows disk was fine, and led me to figure out that the hard drive was the problem. I went and bough a retail 320GB hard drive of the same brand, and sure enough, windows installed fine. Thankfully, amazon accepted the return without any hassle. It'll be a while before i buy another OEM hard drive.

I have a high quality/performance demand and I always research before purchasing. This drive is EASY to install (screw screw plug plug done) and works as advertised. I've had it for about a month now and for the format (Sata II), size and especially the price, you simply cannot go wrong with this purchase.A definite "buyers choice"!PS: Remember, this is OEM so you will need to obtain a power cord and data cable. I already had a few, they came with the motherboard, so no let downs for me. Be prepared... get yours in advance!

I just ordered my third WD6400 over the last 6 months. This drive seems to be the current optimal design: only two platters (2 X 320G), very quiet operation, and very good cost/capacity ratio. Larger drives have more platters (more noise, less reliability?), and seem to have more problems.Personally, my main goal for a drive is low noise, second is reliability, and third is low cost/capacity ratio. Seagate was the low-noise winner with their 80GB Barracuda drives a few years ago, so I stayed with Seagate drives longer than I should have. Their later drives became noisier; I find recent Seagate noise levels unacceptable. Each drive or series needs to be evaluated on it's own; continuing to favor a company after they start degrading quality is a mistake.

I purchased this model about a year ago, and it comes with 5 years manufacturer warranty. Recently I found somehting wrong with this HD and contacted with WD customer service, after several emails back and forth, I downloaded WD diagnostics utility, and got the report "too many bad sectors".Then I was told by customer service that I need to ship the bad HD by myself and have it replaced. It is ridiculous, think about the market value of this HD around $60 to $80, but I need to pay another $20 to $30 to ship it. And who knows how long the HD will last again.I dealt with HP/Compaq warranty regarding the defective laptop before, they basically sent out a package with postage paid already and I don't need to pay anything. A much better way to handle warranty.

Works as it should.All you need is a SATA cable to connect it to your motherboard, a SATA connector on your power supply, and four screws to mount it in your chassis.I'm very happy with the performance, and will probably buy another to use as a back up drive.I downloaded the software off of the WD site, but you aren't missing anything if you don't have it. I made a partition and formatted it during Windows set up, then finished partitioning through the Windows compmgmt.msc. I did use the software to copy a partition off of an older drive, but the utility didn't thrill me. You could probably find another free utility on the web that would work as well, or better.

Well, it came very well packaged and protected, i feel its faster than my previous Barracuda 320Gb, very silent and gets the job well done :), i still cant imagine what im going to fill 500Gb with, but the price was quite reasonable.

I got this Western Digital drive a couple of years ago. The drive worked okay for about a month, then the SMART info became garbled. I RMA'd the drive and got a replacement. All has been good until a couple of days ago, when it started exhibiting the click of death. 450gb of files gone forever. I am glad for the people who are having a good experience with this drive, but be afraid, very afraid and back up your data.My 500gb Samsung, also purchased about the same time is still going strong. Unfortunately, it was not in a RAID configuration. I have never had a Samsung fail, so I think I will stick with them from now on. They seem to be more reliable, because they don't go for the cutting edge which this drive was at the time I purchased it.

Fast access, very few bad sectors when formated. It's been running well for 3 months now (not long, I know) but it is very stable. Note - does not come with cables or mounting kit.
