I knew I was ordering an OEM but after installing the HD I found a lot of files and pictures that did not belong to me.(guess from the previous owner) For some reason the drive was not wiped clean before shipping to me. Otherwise the drive is running fine I find it to be quiet. You do need to order a sata cable along with the drive (does not come with one) which I did. Now I had to reinstall XP all over again cause I want a clean computer.

The Western Digital Hard Drive works great for backing up, using different OS's can't have enough drive space and works with BlackX ....just put in and take it out and if needed another put another one in.And Thanx, to Amazon which makes it so easy to buy and has so many selections of {{EveryThing}} from the confront of home.....thumbs up Amazon.

I purchased this product to replace an aging drive which was beginning to fail. Failed seek test and bad sectors was suspected of the OLD drive. Installed this drive and copied all partitions using partition magic 8.0Removed the old drive and booted right up. No missing data.Using the drive, I see a huge increase it productivity and storage space.Would I by this drive again. YES in a Heart Beat.

Very Quiet Drive. Doesn't run hot. averaging temps at 31-33 C.I am using it as part of a 3 drive RAID. Too soon to tell about long term stability obviously.

As usual Western Digital Hard Drives are great. This drive lives up to the promise. Since it is in OEM configuration it must be initialized, but this is easy to accomplish with most versions of Windows.

Bought 2 of these drive and put them in a Linksys NAS200. They have been working now for over a week and seems to be running great so far. For the money these drives are well worth the money.

Price per gig is a great value with this drive. I have thrown one in my home PC to store HD video. I cant speak for the longevity but so far so good.

The PC showed up in about 5 days and the monitor about 3 days after that. Both worked just fine out of the box. Wish the video card had a DVI outlet. Will have to buy such a card, and then see if I need to buy a bigger power supply. Just be aware of those types of limitations when buying a refurbished PC.

this is the largest 2-platter WD drive (important to me for reduced heat etc)...works great so farAmazon beat the price of the major online computer seller i usually use, and also had superior packaging for shipment in my opinionI ordered it on a Friday, and it was at my door on Monday...in the first week of december no less...great job!

Drive performs very well and runs quiet. The WD website has good helps for installation and configuration. Buy a SATA drive cable or make sure you have an extra one already.

This product is perfect if you are replacing a drive. However, if it is a new drive or an additional drive, be sure to order the connecting cable to go along with it. Either way, my desktop is back up and running better than it has in 2 years now.

This hard disk is an excellent buy,price is so reasonable for the quality and capacity of it.I have had several Western Digital hard disks over the years and never had the slightest failure with any of them.Very satisfied with it and highly recomended!

I bought this hard drive along with an Antec MX-1 enclosure, to expand the capacity of my DVR box. I had it installed, up and running, in less than 10 minutes. The DVR immediately recognized the drive, and formatted it. It is extremely quiet. Much quieter than the internal DVR HDD, even though it is also a WD drive. I have no complaints. Remember, this is "OEM". No manual. No cables. No hardware.

This hard drive is a great buy, also WD 1 TB drives get good reviews too from my friend.It also runs 2 degrees C cooler than my seagate drive, which means it must be more energy efficient and reliable.

lots of people dosnt like WD... i dont like it too.. but its very cheap, and works fine. so if you are running very important things or documents, dont store them in a WD. lol. i am taking risk here, because this is my primary storage device, and i have lots of work. but dont have money for a better HD, this is like an act of faith. working pretty nice so far. hope it does much much longer.

The box did not include the cables. It is an inconvenience but it is still a good deal. When I went to Frys to buy the cables I saw a similar offer.

It works very well, and was my first SATA install. The only problem I had was that my motherboard's SATA controller is a couple of years older, and did not support the high data rate of this drive. A jumper was required to configure the drive for the controller, but as this was an OEM package, it didn't come with one. I use Debian Linux with a packaged kernel, and found no problems at all between this drive and the OS.

I have owned many WD drives in the past. I have never had any issues with them. This drive is no exception. The setup was a easy and effortless. The drive is quiet and fast. What more can you ask for at such a great price....And you can't beat Amazon's shipping...

Have now bought 6 of these drives - using with a BlacX drive bay for storage of Panasonic P2 video files. The drives just work, and have survived multiple flights from California to Florida and several transatlantic journeys to the edit facility in England.Good cheap storage.

It's a good drive so far. I have a Mac Pro and had two of these installed already. I was using them to store my movies and photos. Luckily I had them configured using Leopard's built in raid software where all the data is automatically shadowed to the other drive. A week after I ordered this drive, as an upgrade to another computer, one of these hard drives in my MAC pro, failed. Luckily, because it was in the RAID configuration, I did not loose my data. I've learned my lessons over the years and backup-especially of assets like digital photos is very important--I anticipate some disasters. The good news is, the drive was still under warranty, so I shipped it back to Western Digital and they send me a replacement the next day. I'm very pleased with the customer service and i've had many WD drives over the years and this is the first one that went south.

I don't know if it's just the one I received but mine vibrates more than normal and causes my computer case to make noise. I think I got a defective one because HDDs are NOT supposed to vibate too much especially 7200 rpm drives. It sounds like the platters or something inside is not balanced hence the vibration. The drive itself does not rattle or anything but it vibrates.

Not a lot to say here, but this drive is very quiet, very fast, and keeps quite cool. I work in the business and we actually carry this exact model and so far we haven't had hardly any come back with problems. I bought mine here because Amazon's price is cheaper than what my "adjusted cost" is at work. I have 4 drives in my machine and have only used Western Digital. I have 2 Raptors and 2 of these 500GB. If you are looking for a big drive that's also quiet and reliable look no further. Oh, 5 out of 5 eggs in the reviews over at Newegg...

I followed a link on Amazon that said best price on 1TB hard drive. Read the model number... this is a 250 gig drive, NOT 1TB although you can't tell that anywhere on the sale page except by the model number. Don't buy if your expecting a 1TB hard drive. Good luck.

Sorry to say folks. As much as i have great respect for WD hard drives. This new 500gig is a total failure. It just doesn't show up on my windows XP,Neither on Linux(mandriva & Ubuntu),neither on the Apple Mac Book. Presently i am disappointed. This hard drive i wanna return for a replacement. Buying this hard drive i would not recommend especially as this happened at a time that i needed space for all my music.

New rating: 5/5Just a quick note before I begin: I run 2x 1GB GeForce 8600 GT on an MSI n570 SLi motherboard with an AMD Phenom @ 2.6 Ghz with 8GB DDR2 RAM. I am not a hardcore gamer or PC enthusiast; this is the first rig of this calibur that I have ever built.That being said....There's really not much to say. It works, and it works well. I've yet to experience any problems with speed or corruption. Just make sure your motherboard supports SATA, as the device doesn't have IDE-in. Also, as mentioned in other reviews, it doesn't come with its own wiring, so make sure you have a spare SATA and SATA-power cables. All in all, a good product for the price.

Everything is working properly, i installed vista ultimate sp1 with a q6000 in 8 min, and later after, i made a partition with the ubuntu cd and installed ubuntu hardy heron in 6 min, no joke, this drive is crazy fast up to 66 mb/s (HD TACH) transfer rate, i was migrating from old eide drives, sata is the way, also note for vista media experience users, HARDDRIVE SCORE 5.7 NOT 5.9, i had before with ide drives 5.2, it isint a big difference may i say, but the boot time and install time are much shorter and speedy for such a huge drive. And for 79.99 it's a steal. if you want 5.9 get a raptor or velociraptor.

I received the product in just a few days, which was a +; however, after less than a month of operation, it has become very noisy. I fear that it will die, as my previous Western Digital drive did. It has performed well up to this point.

Too Fragile - be prepared to lose everything you store on it.I bought this to take with me on a international trip. I used it to store pictures, movies and music as well as to transfer stuff from one computer another. It did a great job with everything ,but it is not packed very well. It fell off the kitchen table to the floor (about 4ft) and that was it. I could not access anything on it anymore. It is not recognizable to any computer anymore. I lost everything I had on it. I wish I would of got an Ipod or something more reliable. I know an ipod can take a small fall and still work, I know several people that have dropped their ipod and it still works fine, they don't break so easily.In my opinion it was a waste of good money to buy this. It's just too delicate for a normal person to use. I handled it carefully, but accidents happen.

Purchased two 500 GB drives and configured them in a RAID0. The hard drives work great and the price is much cheaper than the brick and mortar stores.However, the drives arrived OEM (ie. no fancy packaging, no written documentation, just the drives). Could not find any indication on the website that these drive were sold as OEM. The drives are new, and it's no biggie to me, but if you're not savvy on hooking up SATA drives to your PC and you need some instructions, warranty docs, or written specs, then buyer beware! Amazon doesn't seem to openly advertise their OEM products.

The product itself is the best on the market, however, had I gone to a local store and bought it, the package would have contained the LifeGuard installation CD and the cableWhen I received this from Amazon, there was no CD no cable, nothing just the hard drive.I think Amazon should post a package detail list for all products on their site.
