Since this is a OEM (original equipment manufacturer) drive it does not have any hardware or instructions so it is best (my opinion) to have it professionally installed by your computer shop's trusted geek... after all, you did save a bit of money on the drive! Notice the three year warranty. I've had no problems with Western Digital drives so I trusted it to my "dream machine" as the main hard drive and installed Windows Vista and my programs on it. I then purchased a one terabyte model for my data files. This arrangement proved to be a good decision. I'm very happy! These are good quiet drives... although I trust them, I still back up my files two additional times on external drives. Overkill? Maybe, maybe not.

My third drive of this model has just died. The only thing that has saved me each time was that my system is running a RAID1 setup otherwise I would have had to rebuild my system each time. I have previously replaced the failed drive with an identical unit to make it easy to replace in the RAID setup. Not this time, I will be imaging my system and copying it to a new pair of drives of a different model.

I have had two of these drives running in RAID0 for two and a half years now! I have never reformatted or re-created the array. They run fast and they have been solid all this time, writing and reading data 24/7 with an uptime of 99% or better. They are amazing drives when properly cooled and cared for. The only cons I would say is that they seem to have gotten slower over the years but some degradation is to be expected, and they are mostly full all of the time as of now. Basically, I have to add more space and take the load off this array and I think I'd gain some speed back. In general though, they're fast, cheap, and they tend to last. If you have a chance to buy these, do so!

No drama there.I installed it in a Thermaltake BlacX and use it as an external backup drive.Speeds are good, this was a good purchase.I'm not sure if this is common or normal, but this drive runs really hot to the touch.

If you don't know what OEM is, it stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. In laymen's terms it means that you are buying something that is designed to just be installed in a computer, likely as a replacement for failed hardware. That also means you won't get ANY accessories with this; no cables, no screws, nothing. If you understand that then this is a good deal. HOWEVER...be careful buying OEMs from Amazon. As a side note, I bought this to offload significant amounts of data from my primary drive, for archival purposes. I can live without the bulk of it, but a lot of it is irreplaceable and I would really rather not lose it.Most big name stores do not sell OEM parts. Places like Fry's do because they're effectively giant warehouses full of overstock. Amazon will sell you OEM, but their packaging leaves a LOT to be desired. In the case of a hard drive, they are considered fragile as evident by all labeling on the drive itself; Amazon will not mark it as fragile on the box. That means UPS or FedEx or whoever is going to toss that box around like it's nothing. Normally this wouldn't be an issue for a properly packaged item...popcorn or bubble wrap or inflated pillows, but Amazon just had this sandwiched, in its electrostatic bag, between two plastic holders and directly placed into the box. No type of cushioning whatsoever, and it was not marked fragile. That was my first concern. When I got it home I proceeded to run Disk Management from Windows 7 to set up the volume and do a full format. It took two hours to fail at 8% and defaulted back to RAW; from that point I could no longer access it from Disk Management or CHKDSK. Bad sign - usually means there's something wrong with a sector or even a platter. I had to download a program, Partition Wizard, which after some plugging and unplugging was able to find the drive, format it and set it up. Partition Wizard did the full format in a matter of 1 minute. I ran a surface test to make sure there were no additional errors and didn't find any. Instead of fully moving the data, I copied what was there over to the drive and then I've been moving some additional stuff that was never properly archived. Reads work fine, and writes are fast over USB/eSATA bridge, but I still worry about what might have gotten messed up over the shipment. I'm going to just use it for a few months repeatedly, accessing the data and see if there are any issues, if not then I'll call it safe.Just be forewarned about Amazon's shipping methods with an OEM device like a hard drive that is sensitive to sudden shock and motion. The drive itself is solid, but Amazon doesn't seem to care about shipping it properly.

After working with numerous failed drives from other manufacturers over the years, there's a reason I only buy Western Digital. This hard drive falls in line with others that I've purchased from WD. It's a quiet, quick, reliable workhorse. It's an OEM package with minimal instructions, no cabling, or drive rails etc., but for system builders like me and those looking for a replacement drive, it's perfect. The SATA interface is fast, installation was quick and painless. Have yet to experience a DOA or failed drive within the first 2 years from WD. You can't go wrong with this drive!

Bought yet another pair of these for general backup use (we like this drive a lot - as a drive it is great) and as noted by others, this is just a naked OEM drive. But this time the two drives arrived in a huge 2 foot long box with a light bit of packing and, having been tossed about in shipping, the anti static envelopes are covered with dimple marks from the impacts of the rough handling. Yes the warranty should still protect me, but now I have two unit that will need to be watched due to the "pre stress" that Firemall LLC added to the process. Not at all happy about that part of the transaction.

Used this drive as an inexpensive replacement for a failed drive on a client's low-end Dell system from. Had zero problems installing the drive and getting the system up and running. Drive seems very quiet over-all. Disk speeds were as good if not better than previous drive installed... Not a 'performance' drive by any means, but a great basic drive. Good for someone looking for inexpensive extra storage or OEM replacement on a entry or older computer. Decent amount of space for the dollar. No complaints.

May 4, 2011==============Well, I had a warranty replaced WD drive, and this is what they sent me. On the drive cover states, "Product of Thailand".The Date code on it was: 12 OCT 2010. So I go to start using this guy with my Acronis clone software and I get about 60% of my clone finished andI start getting disk write errors. Well, I jump through the hoops and run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows. That wouldn't even read the poor thing. So, I reformat the brand new thing, and just to test, I try to copy a folder to it. The frequent noise that I used to hear in the 90s when a hard drive goes bad rushed back from my memories when I hear this thing do it. So I go on WD warranty site, put in the serial# and the warranty on this poor bastard was 5 months.I get out a magnifying glass and look all over the sticker on the drive and find the smallest words on Superman could read: recertifiedAll I can say is, "WD, you are cheap and deceitful".

I got this a month or two ago. I installed it, attempted to clone my Windows drive, it worked, however I booted to an error. The error turned out to be related to missing boot info. After formatting and cloning again, and some recovery console work I got it to boot. However to a Temporary User account. After digging for hours with no results pertaining to a fix, I again formatted. I resigned myself to use it for storage until I decide to do a fresh install of Windows. I moved some files from another disk(I have 4 including this) let the computer go to sleep while I was away doing other things, decided to move the contents of a smaller drive to it and came back and noticed it was missing from My Compter. Looked in Storage Management and it showed as raw. Partition Table got corrupted or disappeared. After fixing that issue, Its been running fine. A bit(about the same really) slow compared to my 320gb Seagate that I've had for a few years according to HD Tach.I still have not committed to putting anything important on it, I guess I'm a little paranoid after the Partition Table incident.Personally I have only had to RMA 2 hard drives since 2002 out of 12 or so.All of that out of the way. I am very wary of hard drives lately, I've seen a lot more negative reviews from buyers complaining of DOA drives or drives that fail in hours or days than I did in the past. I accept that there's a fair chance my drive may die on me at some point either in or out of warranty, but to have it fail so early in its usage worries me. Quality Control is apparently declining in most of the major Manufacturers.

I purchased a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB internal hard drive from the Amazon.com website. The product arrived at the time Amazon said it would, but when I opened the box it came in there was the hard drive but nothing else. No installation CD. . . .No information on the product. . . .No product registration form. . . .No pride or care on Western Digital's part whether the person who purchases their products is satisfied and that their product does what they claim it does. Since I cannot install this product, I put it to good use as a DOOR STOP! ! ! ! I WILL NEVER, NEVER, EVER BUY ANYTHING from Western Digital EVER AGAIN! ! ! ! This is the sixth hard drive I've purchased in the last eight years, all MAXTOR, and never had a problem until now. DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM WESTERN DIGITAL - - - THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS!!!!!!!!

As I'm sure you guessed by the title, I've been running this drive since August '09. I bought it from Amazon and installed it as a secondary drive. It's the newer of my 2 drives, so it gets extreme daily use in a hot environment. Although I have a half dozen fans inside my PC, I live in a hot climate. When summer comes, even the AC can't keep it as cool as the computer (or myself for that matter) would like. I store, run programs and games from this hard drive and shut it down at night (again, because of heat.)I had no trouble installing it and it's been serving me well enough that now that my main / older drive is making noise I plan on purchasing another to run Windows and handle the basic use my main drives gets.

I bought this one in 2008. In less of two years it stopped! At first everything was OK, but before a year of use, my computer said "the disk is very damaged and recommended change it", in that times, bug reports indicated that in Palimpset (disk tool of Ubuntu 9.10) had a bug reading S.M.A.R.T. showing warning messages by mistake and Windows disk tool didn't detect anything wrong, then ignoring the Ubuntu warnings, I kept using it. Last year I had to buy a new hard drive because my Western Digital was damaged and took half of my data without backup. I have a couple of excellent WD disks in the same computer, one of 80 GB (2004) and another of 160 GB (2008), I don't know what happend with this model...

I originally bought this HD to serve as a second hard drive in my system, the first being a Western Digital 80GB with 2MB cache. First of all, you should know that because it's listed as "OEM," you're just getting the drive and nothing else. You'll need to buy a SATA data cable (if you don't have one) and have an extra SATA power connection from your power supply unit (PSU). It's not the white plug with the round holes, it's a thin black plug that looks like a larger version of the data cable. I'm not sure how people set up the partitions without a boot disc, but luckily I still had the WD Hard Drive Tools CD that came with the older drive, so I set my motherboard BIOS to have the PC boot from the DVD drive and created one 50GB partition without too much trouble. I decided to transfer my files to the new HD and use the old one for extra space, and do a clean install of Windows XP on the new drive. XP doesn't recognize partitions above 130GB (until you upgrade the Service Packs), which is why I only had the one 50GB partition to start off with (see below). The Windows install went smoothly, and I used a thumb drive to install SP1 followed by SP3 (you need 1 installed before you can install 3). I also re-installed the motherboard drivers (from the WD CD). Then I used the built-in partition manager (right-click My Computer, click Manage, click Disk Management and right-click on the unused space on the hard drive to create new partitions). I had the 50GB partition for Windows and programs, and created an 80GB partition for my pictures/docs/videos, a 100GB partition for my mp3s, and the rest was partitioned for copied DVDs. For some reason, XP only recognizes it as a 465GB hard drive, but it's not a big deal, as it's still more space than I'll need.I re-downloaded a lot of the programs that were on my old HD, and otherwise copied most of the files over without too much trouble. If you have enough space on your HD, you should keep the original installation files instead of deleting them (the install package for my Zune, for instance, is 131MB, and too an hour to download again. I reformatted the Zune to start fresh with my updated and reorganized collection). After making sure everything was copied, I cleared some of the partitions on the old HD and used that space to make one big partition. I re-copied a few important files back to the old HD, just in case the new drive ever fails (unlikely). The HD performs really well. It's nearly silent, and loads everything much faster than the old HD (I'm now able to start XP and immediately access my drives and programs, where before the desktop would show but nothing would respond for a few minutes). Going from 2MB to 16MB cache makes a huge difference. All in all, this hard drive is a great buy (I remember buying the 80gb for $60 just 3 years ago! How technology changes...).

I've had my eye on this drive for almost a year, based the great reviews for speed and reliability it receives on several web sites. My 250GB stock drive was finally full of movies and music, so I decided to take the plunge and purchase this drive. Had the old drive out and new one in my 24" white iMac in about 20 minutes, and after a reinstall of OS X, and full restore from my Time Machine backup drive, I was back in action. The first thing I noticed was the quicker install time for the OS (about 20 min vs. 30 for my old drive). Once I was up and running, my machine is much more peppy starting up (about a 30~40% increase in time to desktop from power on) and apps start up equally as quickly. I'm really surprised the difference in performance from the OEM 250GB WD SE Caviar that came installed stock. I would highly recommend this drive to anyone.
