This hard drive is great in terms of storage and speed. The thing i wanted to bring up was the noises this dam thing makes.I was orginally going for the Caviar Black, but an "expert" talked me into the blue, claiming it was just as good in quality as the black.I've had this in my PC since August when I built it, and from the beginning the noises coming from the HDD we're driving me crazy. The first thing I noticed was the noises of the HDD being accessed. Alot of HDDs have this, it sounds kind of like a car really slowly easing off the brakes. I really had no problem with this at all considering it's a normal thing of hard drives to do. even my PS3 does it.What really annoyed me was the next sounds i started hearing. Constant thumping coming from the hard drive. every 10 seconds or so, a faint thump could be heard from the drive. At first I thought it was something outside, but after closer examination I determined it was the HDD. To be honest I don't notice the sound too much now. I might have gotten use to it.These HDDs are hit or miss really. Some are manufactured good and some aren't. That's why some reviews rave about this drive and others claim it breaking not even 30 minutes after opening the box and setting it up.Go for a SeaGate Barracuda or a Caviar Black at least.

"Blue" is how Western Digital labels its non- specialized drives. This product isn't specifically low power (that would be Green), high performance (Black), or long endurance (Red). Combined with a rather low price, some might call this a "value" drive. The first thing I noticed when I handled the drive is how light it is. I double-checked with my kitchen scale and indeed, it's almost half the weight of my older Black drive. Upon closer inspection, the platter stack (covered by plastic of course) is also much thinner. This is a very good thing - it means that WD uses modern high- density platters, which uses less power and increases performance.I was surprised to get a read speed of 177 MB/sec out of this drive. This is much better than my 4-year old Black drive (109 MB/s), and also better than my Green drive (120 MB/s). As expected, the operation temperature lies between the Black (hot) and Green (lukewarm). In term of quietness, it's actually closer to the Green drive (nearly silent) than the Black drive (quite loud when the heads move). In short, this is a great middle-of-the-road drive, with good performance. The only thing I don't like about this series is that the capacity tops out at 1TB. Considering the thin drive stack, I'm sure WD could make larger versions, but simply doesn't want to cannibalize sales of the other series.

I received a sample unit of the WD10EZEX 1 TB 7200 RPM drive with 64 MB cache for review. Formatting and testing it in an external firewire 800 dock on a Mac, it felt as warm (not hot) as a WD 'Green' drive, but was definitely a bit noisier: there is an audible ticking sound during drive access that I don't hear with the Green line of drives. It seems a good value proposition for internal storage or an external backup drive, although I'm not sure I would have purchased it had I not been offered a test unit. The Amazon price for either a 2 TB WD Green drive, twice the storage, or a 1 TB WD Black drive - higher performance and 5 year warranty - is not substantially greater than the cost of this drive. Personally, I prefer WD Black for internal and the larger capacity WD Green for backups or media. But, if you're on a tight budget, this drive is worth considering. The drive requires a special formatting utility download if you're running XP. For OS X or newer versions of Windows, the 'advanced format drive' can be formatted properly by the OS. For Windows users, WD offers a free download of a special version of Acronis True Image to allow upgraders to clone their internal drive onto this new drive to make it your new boot drive. (Mac users can clone with Disk Utility or various well-known 3rd party programs.)

My previous hard drive-a Seagate Baracuda 7200.12 750gb-model ST3750528AS-- was very noisyI owned one that came with with my Emachines computer that Stopped working after a couple of years.I purchased the exact model as a backup up and it too was noisy- I was concerned that it too would crash and burn soon, so Isought out a WD based on recomendations and researchI Have been Pleasantly surprised so far!I have had this drive for about a month. In reviews I have read, these are a gold standard among builders because they last.My hope is that this will prove true years from now.One thing that has sold me is that Western Digital is by far the quietest Hard Drive I have used. The WD has a larger cache than the seagate-64 mb- and so loads faster. And the extra space is great for storing music, videos...etc.I would highly recomend this drive to anyone seeking to upgrade.Great warranty as well.

My old iMac 17 inch was starting to get slow and I was constantly getting the spinning ball of wait. Plus my old hard drive was almost full and I wanted more space. I figured I could get a few more years out of the 17 inch so I though I go the external hard drive route. I also have two mac in two locations and wanted them to be a mirror of each other. So, I bought a Voyager Q external hard drive stand and this 1 TB drive so I can use the 1 TB drive on either computer and I can pop in other Hard dives as needed. The drive made all the difference to my macs performance. I cloned my iMac's drive to the 1TB drive, did all the permissions and rebuilding stuff to the system to get it all ship shape. On the old drive this helped a tiny bit but with the new drives 64 MB cache what a difference. The old iMac really performs- I'd say 2 to 3 time faster. Plus, as the dive is sitting right next to me, 2/3 exposed sitting in the Voyager Q stand I can say it is very quiet. I'm sure if it was inside a PC you wouldn't hear a thing. And it runs very cool. All in all a good hard drive.

This arrived well within 48 hours of ordering. Thanks Prime ! I needed a hard drive I could physically swap out and be up and running again in case the original just decided to quit. There's no indication it will, but you just never know when disaster might strike. You can never be over cautious with precious data.I set this up in tandem with the main drive in my PC, used some excellent free software to clone the drive bit-by-bit to the new drive and it worked perfectly. Booted back up on the cloned drive and it was perfect. Not a hiccup or glitch. No fuss, no bother, it just worked and the whole process was frustration freeI will now store the older drive in my safety deposit box. The peace of mind of having a perfect copy of everything on the drive, ready to go, is priceless.

Windows installed great, the drive operated pretty fast. Then one day my applications were real sluggish so I rebooted my machine. Windows went straight into repair mode. The hard drive was clicking which indicates that it's physically bad. Bad timing (isn't it always?) because I'm working on my senior thesis paper this semester, however, I didn't lose any documents because they're double-backed up on the cloud (Gotta love SkyDrive and Google Drive). Unfortunately, it still hinders productivity and time. Amazon is sending a replacement drive which is good, but I have to give this one 2 stars because it failed its primary purpose so quickly. Luckily I didn't wipe my previous drive or I would've been completely out of luck.

This is my second Western Digital 1TB hard drive that I bought from Amazon.Like some people here, my computer would not recognize the first drive thatI bought one year ago. I have Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools installed,so I fired it up. WD-DLT found the new WD-1TB drive immediately. I "installed"it as a storage device and have had no problems since.Same problem with the new drive I received 20 March 2013. I used the samesolution (Lifeguard Tools) and everything looks good. Hopefully, it will proveto be as reliable as the first one.I do not know if this is intentional by the manufacturer or an oversight, butWD Lifeguard Tools saved me the hassle of returning a new hard drive.

You just can't beat a Western Digital Hard Drive. They have a wide array of hard drives to meet your needs and your wallet. My recommendation comes from now 19 years of using Western Digital drives. I have never had to return a drive and certainly cannot say this about other manufacturer's hard drives. The other plus here is Western Digital has been a top company; who puts their customers first. You'll find they will cover your drive and give you the best support in the business. My first choice buying their drives...was due to how quiet they run....and now it's for quick read/write speeds; lower voltage draws; and terabytes of storage ...yes terabytes of storage. The old expression here "Try it you'll like it.' certainly applies to WD products. Good prices; good products; highly recommended. (you'll pay a litte bit more) but certainly worth the price.

So far the drive is proving to be a solid performer. I put it into the front hot swap bay in my Cooler Master HAF X and connected it to my ASUS boards Marvell 6gb controller. I then did some reads and writes from my Caviar Black that is connected to the boards Intel Z68 controllers. The slowest transfer rate I got was 120 mb/sec moving 30 gigs of mixed files. There was some faint chatter audible on occasion but I have to cut it some slack because the drive is sitting right in front and at ear level within the tower.Overall I am very happy with the drive in its use as internal storage for movies and videos. It is a cost effective and energy efficient addition to my PC.One last thought - bring your own SATA cables and mounting screws because there is nothing in the box but the drive.

The hard drive was installed no problem and has actually sped up my system - most likely due many files being moved off my old drive. As a product, no problems here so far.The surprise was that this was an OEM product. Unless I'm not seeing it, or I'm a unique case - this was not detailed on the product page - meaning you don't get the screws or the cable. So, I ended up going to a retail store and buying the cable. Had it been specified on the product page, I would have saved money by buying an SATA cable online.

I was going to go to a 2TB or 4TB drive but the reliability reviews were poor. I'll keep buying either the blue or green WD HDDs for my backups using my USB/SATA dock.* On a recent order of another blue HDD the drive came not in the usual WD cardboard box but was just in the anti-static bag. Drive worked fine but I feel these drives need more protection or better packing when shipped! * The drive moving around slightly damaged the corners of a boxed DVD set which was in the same shipping box.

I purchased this drive to replace an original 160GB (really....they actually made them this small once) drive on a PC rebuilt to serve as my entertainment computer. Getting the old drive out was a bit tricky, but this new drive slipped right into its place and, so far, has functioned perfectly. Very quiet drive (you cannot even hear this drive spin) and I am able to play movies from the drive (MKV format, large files) using VLC player with absolutely no lag or problems with playback (the higher RPM was important for that very fact). Good packaging seems to have nicely protected the drive in transit and overall I am quite pleased with my purchase!

Installation was a snap and restored all my files using a saved system image. Was amazed how easy and quick the process took. I was prepared for several days of work but it only took about 4 hours. It's kind of fun to watch the difference in the time it takes for me to write to this drive and write to the other. I guess you can blame the read time on other factors but... pfft. I'm blown away by the difference, so I guess that's all that matters. I game rather frequently on my system and do some occasional video editing, and I don't have any problems with this HD.

As one that usually uses Caviar Black drives for my SATA, I was a bit hesitant about this drive. It's pretty fast, I am getting about 170mb/sec out of it. It is very quiet, I rarely hear the drive spin up. I was also surprised to see the same drive in an HP Z820 workstation. That is pretty impressive that HP would stick this drive in a certified workstation, that says a lot. After testing, I placed this drive in an external RAID array, it is one of the mirrored drives, so it is getting used hard. After a few weeks of service it has yet to give me a problem.I recommend this drive.

Having spent a large part of my work career in Operations in manufacturing and distribution companies, I really appreciate the importance of things like customer service, product design, packaging and the like. The price of the drive played into my decision, but the selling point for me was that Western Digital provides Cloning Software free to clone the old drive and transfer bit by bit the old drive contents to the new drive. The installation was easy, compliments to Dell cabinet design and access as well as to WD.The drive works great, is quiet and plenty fast.I recommend this and would buy it again!

I built a Hackintosh to replace my aging Mac Mini. I use it for sound recording and video encoding and this HDD makes a difference. The 7200 rpm drive is much faster than the 5400 rpm drive in my mac mini. The price is good for the size and performance, but the drive is loud. I bought the Caviar Blue over the Caviar Black hoping it would be quieter for sound recording, but this drive is the loudest part of my computer. It is not overly loud or obnoxious, just louder than I am used to.

WD has long been a name to trust in hard drives. I had built my own system with an SSD boot drive but grossly underestimated what size I would need. Once that filled, my system became unstable and the hunt was on for a replacement. Getting another SSD of the size I really need is just way too expensive.I already have five other WD drives in my system, and this is the right replacement for the boot device. Smooth sailing so far. 7200 with 64mb cache and the WD sticker - what's not to love?

I replaced a caviar black 250gb drive with this one, it was mildly concerning to me that this drive was substantially lighter in weight than the one it replaced. Just gave me an uneasy feeling.Drive works fine, and deserves the 4 stars, but I am nervous about it lasting. It felt substantially less than a drive a quarter it's capacity. The 1 tb green drive I put in my son's computer weighed substantially more than this drive. Just makes me nervous, in my experience computer parts, like hard drives or power supplies weigh more with better quality.time will tell I suppose.

I bought two of these drives about two months apart as the Samsung 1TB drives I had died and started clicking. The Western Digital drives have proved to be very quiet, and very fast. With my old drives, I would hear them spin up every time they turned on. I do not hear that with the WD drives. There is also no noticeable vibration, which I've had a problem with in the past on some other brands. All in all I would say that this is a great drive for the money, and I would buy them again.
