It's a bias, but I love Western Digital drives. I am an IT professional by trade, but I'm not sure that makes me any kind of authority on the subject. I don't do reliability testing or bench-marking for a living. While all the data I've see tends to reinforce my existing bias, it is the nature of biases to be self-affirming. All I can offer, then, is my personal opinion and my professional recommendation, based on my own experiences. The truth is, that's often all we IT people can provide: opinions, and sometimes shaky ones. We tend to form our opinions based on experiences when the truth about how good or bad a particular drive model or maker is, is really a matter of statistics. We instead reach conclusions based on anecdotal evidence and recommendations from friends or colleague, and it's far too easy for a popular conception, a single run of good luck, or a single bad experience to cloud the statistical realty. We also tend to become brand loyal once we enter a place of comfort with a product line. But I've seen plenty of Western Digital drives die. I've seen plenty of ANY brand of hard drive die: Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung, you name it. I recommend that you take all consumer reviews for hard drives with a grain of salt and look online for professional reviews, benchmarks, and reliability data if you really want to know how a given drive rates. Anandtech, Tom's Hardware, and PC Perspective are some good starting points. With all that in mind, my biases are not without reasons. I've been very pleased with every Western Digital drive I've owned over the last 13 years of my personal computing life. I originally became a fan because of the large capacities, large cache, and low seek times back when I was picking parts for my first computer that I bought myself--a Dell. Back then, Dell's site had better data on their components available. It was easy to get a table that showed you all the specs of the various options and you could easily see where the best bang for your buck would be. The Western Digital drives were all much better performers than the other options Dell had at that time. Unlike some of my other old loyalties (like the one I had for Linksys products, for example), I've continued to be impressed by Western Digital products. I have a 1 TB Black drive as my main data drive in my current box.The reasons I like Western Digital are not just due to the hardware itself, though. Their support has been good compared to others I've had to contact in the past. I have also yet to have had a problem getting WD to honor a warranty replacement, unlike some truly awful experiences I've had with other brands (again, bias!). Western Digital also has some pretty good free tools (Data Lifeguard) for diagnostics, data destruction, and data migration. This is important if you ever suspect the drive could be failing and want to vet it. I've been less impressed by the software WD includes with their external backup drives, so when I was looking for a backup drive I thought it would be better and cheaper to just get a bare internal drive and use it in my docking station for backing up.This particular drive is just what I was looking for. The Black drives are the higher end, higher performing drives, but I'm only using this as a backup disk, so the Blue specs more than meet my needs. That said, this model is the WD10EZEX, which has a 64 MB cache as opposed to the almost WD10EALX 1TB Blue drive, which is almost the same except that it only has 32MB of cache. So, I would definitely go with this one. With the 64 MB cache, the WD10EZEX 1 TB Blue drive specs are almost identical to the WD1002FAEX 1 TB Black drive I already own, which is supposed to be higher end and costs bit more. I have to say, I'm not convinced there's much difference between Blue/Black drives, at least if you get the WD10EZEX with the 64 MB cache. The fact the costs are quite close makes me feel like the two lines have converged and overlapped.Out of curiosity, I did a quick test using HD Tach and was shocked by the results: the WD10EZEX Blue drive outperformed my WD1002FAEX black drive in some respects! Keep in mind that these are both 1 TB drives and both have 64 MB cache. After running a long bechmark test on both drives I was surprised to find that the average read speed was 148.5 MB/s for the Blue drive, but only 1.06.3 MB/s for my Black drive. At first I was worried something might be wrong with my Black drive, but I compared it to the benchmark I ran when I first got the drive and the results were the same. The Black drive does outperform the Blue drive in Random access times, however (12 ms compared to 19 ms), but the point is that this does make one question if the Black drives are worth the extra money over the WD10EZEX Blue drive.I also considered the Green drives, but I've read mixed reviews and the price is the same anyway. The Blue drives are like the Goldilocks drive everyone should get unless they have specific reasons to do otherwise.

When this delivery showed up, I was not home. My wife opened it and said, "It's just a hard drive in a brown box, with no instructions or anything." I thought it must have been a mistake or something. How can a company possibly send out something like this with no manual, no installation reference sheet, or any other documentation whatsoever?!? Well, believe it. That's what I got. Fortunately, I am determined, and I it took great determination to accomplish this mission. Here is the tale of my adventure.First, I went to the Western Digital website looking for an installation manual for this model. The effort was in vain. Even though they have numerous installation manuals on their website, when I entered the serial number, which is required to get the right installation manual, their website gave me an error message, as if this hard drive does not exist.Next, I decided to call Western Digital to get installation instructions. The representative led me to a place on their website for a different hard drive. He told me that those instructions would work for me. Great, but I had another question for him. I remember reading something on Amazon for this drive saying that Western Digital has software for cloning my current hard drive onto the new drive, which eliminates a lot of hassle in setting up a new drive. The rep didn't know anything about this software, but he put me on hold to speak with a supervisor. When he came back, he told me that he was mistaken. There was, in fact, such software available for free download on their website. I proceeded to that section of their website and downloaded the software. It is called Acronis True Image WD Edition. Installation was simple.Next, I followed the very basic instructions for installing the hard drive. I have never done anything quite like this before, but that has never stopped me from attempting things in the past. Just ask my wife about the plumbing incident that turned into Old Faithful in the bathroom and a mold inspector at a cost of $400. But I digress. Anyway, the installation was fairly intuitive, except it appeared that I was missing a cable that I needed to complete the installation. I was not sure what kind of cable it was or where I would get it. Therefore, I called Geek Squad and pimped them for free info. They were pretty much useless and told me that Best Buy doesn't sell cables for connecting hard drives. I then turned to Amazon to search for a hard drive cable of some sort. After many hours of searching for something that I thought might work, I decided to take my chances on a 2-pack of SATA 3.0 High Speed 6GB/sec Data Cables.Fast forward a week, and I am back at the computer torn apart with my new cables that arrived by mail. I only needed one of them, and I proceeded to make the 30-second connection. No problem. Now, the moment of truth. Would the computer actually work, and would the hard drive work? Oh, one other thing to mention. I decided to keep BOTH my original hard drive and the new hard drive in my computer. However, the new hard drive came with no screws to secure it in my computer tower. Therefore, I took 2 of the 4 screws securing my original hard drive and used them to secure the new hard drive. Therefore, neither is secured as well as they should be, but they aren't going anywhere. Finally, it was time to boot up. EVERYTHING WORKED! I started the Acronis software. When I did, it immediately prompted me with something like "New hard drive detected. Do you want to format it?" I clicked YES, and away it went. When that was done, I asked it to clone my 140GB hard drive onto the new Western Digital drive. It did so, though it took many hours. After that, I had second thoughts and decided that I wanted to keep both hard drives. Therefore, I used another function in the Acronis software to wipe the new drive clean, though leave it formatted for use. That took a couple of hours, I believe, but it worked. I then moved some junk off my original hard drive onto the new drive in Windows Explorer. It worked just fine. I have had no problems with the drive whatsoever, since I got it hooked up.As I recall all that I needed to go through to get this drive set up, I cannot believe that I persevered and accomplished the objective. It seemed to me that Western Digital did everything in their ability to make this difficult. Why not put an installation manual in the box? Why not include the screws to secure the hard drive in the tower? Why not tell the consumer where to get the software on their website? Why not have Customer Service people who know what they are talking about? Amazing.Best of luck to you, if you decide to tackle this job. With my review, you should be able to save yourself a lot of headaches. That's my goal--to help others avoid the problems I experienced. In the end, you will probably be very happy with the hard drive, and you will have the feeling of truly accomplishing a mon

QUICK SUMMARY: This drive runs cool like the WD Green drives do, but the performance is great with the fast 7200 rpm speed and 64MB cache. Only time will tell if this drive will perform well over many years. Recommended! Background: I usually buy WD hard drives, and over serveral decades, I've bought a lot of them. I run a Windows Home Server 2011 to manage my home network, and that server has 5 hard drives (now 6, including this WD Blue drive installed). Before installing this new Blue drive, I had one other WD Blue drive (500GB) and four WD Black drives (2TB each). When Western Digital released the Green line of hard drives, I invested heavily into those high-capacity, low-cost drives, but their collective reliability was awful, often lasting only a few months before failing. I replaced all those Green drives with Black drives (high performance, but at double the cost) because I've never had a Black drive fail. I'm hoping these new Blue drives will be just as good as my Black drives are.WHAT I LIKE:- Great performance. I moved a 4GB file onto this Blue drive and the top speed was 133MB/sec (over a USB 3.0 connection). I wrote and read 300GB of files onto this drive - no issues. Transfer speed varied around 35-50MB/sec. If I was moving a single, large file, the transfer speed was 100MB/sec (the lower transfer speeds have to do with my server, not this hard drive).- Cool. Right now, the Blue drive is running just 85 degrees (F) at idle, and bumps up 10-20 degrees or so with much use. My Black drives, also idle, are 10-13 degrees warmer than the Blue drive. Less heat usually means less chance of drive failure.- No issues with installing the drive in my USB 3.0 drive enclosure. The physical installation was flawless, and it took only a moment to format the drive and begin using it. On my server, the Advanced Format feature posed no issue, but be aware of this if you're installing this on an older version of the Windows operating system that doesn't support AF.- Comes with a 2-year warrantyThe only reason why I wouldn't like this drive is if it fails. Let's hoping that I don't need to make use of the warranty feature. Conclusion: I don't trust WD's Green drives, but I use Black drives almost exclusively. Maybe the Blue drives will give me Black-drive-like reliability at a lower cost. (For now, anyway) Recommended!

This hard drive comes in OEM packaging, which means it comes only with the drive in anti-static packaging. This is typical of most hard drives. You will need a SATA cable and an open SATA port on your motherboard for installation. I used this as a replacement for my ancient 80 GB WD HDD that was going on 9 years old, and reinstalling W7 onto a new drive is nice and simple. Just pop in the W7 installation disc once your drive is in and choose Restore or Repair, make sure you have your backup first, though. However, when you use this method, it only restores the exact partitions and size of the original drive, and I realized that you need to create another partition if you want to use the full drive. This is much easier than it sounds, just research creating a partition, it's simple and Windows 7 makes it a breeze. In case you're wondering, SATA ports and connectors are all compatible with each other. SATA II is not a bottleneck to hard drives, only to SSDs. This drive is pretty quiet, except when installing large programs and moving big files, in which it's only barely audible. It's great for a new build or a replacement. I've had good experiences with WD in the past, all the drives of mine and my relatives I have seen of WD branding haven't had any issues at all. I was even using my old drive for a solid 9 years of heavy use and it had no issues. This new drive has the numbers on its side, too. Mine has ZERO seek errors, zero read errors, no reallocated or otherwise damaged sectors, and keeps a consistently cool temperature of 30C. If anything goes wrong for any reason at all, there is always the 2 year warranty to rely on. However, if you don't mind having a bit of a louder drive and paying just a bit more, you can get the Caviar Black which has a nice amount of extra performance, is more reliable and has a longer 5 year warranty. If you don't want, need, or your budget maxes out on the Caviar Blue, then that's just fine because this is one solid drive.

I've been a computer tech for years, and if I have a choice I use western digital for my standard hard drives. And working with business clients, they often need the cost for size that normal hard drives provide. The companies producing standard platter hard drives has shrunk. Western digital owns Hitachi's hard drives and Seagate bought out Samsung's hard drives. We've gotten to the point where there are two names in the competition. After seeing a higher Seagate failure rate over the last few years I don't trust Seagate.I put this 1TB blue drive in my computer as a secondary drive. I moved some large files around and checked it for errors. It's not quite as fast as the Western Digital Black drive I have, but it's working like a champ! The packaging on this drive was perfect. It was in a cardboard box with two plastic "bookends" that gave it a comfortable shell. Then that box was in another box with bubble wrap. I remember when amazon put bare hard drives in a box with little packing (I got one and stopped ordering hard drives from Amazon for a couple years!). I'm so glad that they've gotten better at this! The blue is the mid range of Western Digital hard drives. Green and Red are the low end with slower drives. If I use a green drive it's backups, but I won't use them as a computer's main drive. Red are meant for Network storage where the speed doesn't matter (and have a longer 3 year warranty). Blue is the mid range and is perfect for a storage drive but also useful for a computer's main drive. Then the western digital black is the fastest of the standard consumer drives and has a 5 year warranty (we won't get into higher rpm drives here). So while the blue is great for just about any of your needs, I would suggest doing a price comparison with the blacks. If this is the better value, it's a great drive!

Western Digital has always been my label of choice for hard drives. I have experienced years and years of reliability with my various WD drives. The new WD Blue drive with its 6Gb SATA and 64MB cache is fast and quiet. I replaced an older WD drive with this one as a storage drive (not boot drive) in my PC.EASY INSTALLATION:For an additional drive, physically install the drive into your computer and connect up the power and SATA. Start Windows then right click My Computer and go to Manage, then Disk Management. Select your new drive then initialize and format it. You're ready to go.To replace your existing C: drive, do the physical install, but use your Windows installation disk to initialize, format and do a clean install of Windows. An alternative method to doing a clean install of Windows is to download the Acronis True Image software available at the WD support website, which will help you clone your present C: drive. The software will also help if you add the drive as an additional drive (initialize and format) if you're not sure how to do it using Disk Management (mentioned above). I did not personally use this software in my installation, but it's a free download if you want to check it out.OTHER OBSERVATIONS:It's quiet. This drive hardly makes a sound. It's made in Malaysia (not China), which is a plus. It's a 'barebones' drive, meaning it comes in the box by itself. You will need to supply your own HDD screws, SATA cable, and any other mounting hardware you need for your particular computer case. Also, make sure you have a spare SATA connector on your motherboard if you're adding this as an additional drive.

I ordered this drive over the Red WD10EFRX primarily because of fewer reported problems. The "Red Drive" gets an extra year on the warranty but this Blue drive has shown to be less troublesome, at least to this point. Not sure if there are any substantial differences inside, at least not like when moving up to the Black line where you get two processors, an extra shaft mount, and a 5 year warranty. The Black drives used to be rock solid and I own a couple of them that are well over 3 years old without any glitches, though the current versions don't appear to be made as well these days.So far everything is fine with this drive, which is simply what anyone should expect when buying something new. I even downloaded and tried the WD version of Acronis backup software and made and restored an image of my system drive and it worked flawlessly. This drive is extremely quiet and runs cooler than my Black drives which hopefully will translate to a long life. The drive is made in Malaysia.Everything is hit or miss with hard drives these days, yet it shouldn't be since this is basically an evolved "Winchester" technology from three decades ago. The real problem lies in cutting so many corners and substituting inferior "equivalent" parts to trim prices that the "square has become round". Keeping my fingers crossed that this drive continues to work well for many years to come. Its performance is good and about as expected.Speaking of speed, kudos to Amazon's Free Shipping. I ordered it on a Tuesday and it was delivered the next day rather unexpectedly, but greatly appreciated.

This hard drive is great in terms of storage and speed. The thing i wanted to bring up was the noises this dam thing makes.I was orginally going for the Caviar Black, but an "expert" talked me into the blue, claiming it was just as good in quality as the black.I've had this in my PC since August when I built it, and from the beginning the noises coming from the HDD we're driving me crazy. The first thing I noticed was the noises of the HDD being accessed. Alot of HDDs have this, it sounds kind of like a car really slowly easing off the brakes. I really had no problem with this at all considering it's a normal thing of hard drives to do. even my PS3 does it.What really annoyed me was the next sounds i started hearing. Constant thumping coming from the hard drive. every 10 seconds or so, a faint thump could be heard from the drive. At first I thought it was something outside, but after closer examination I determined it was the HDD. To be honest I don't notice the sound too much now. I might have gotten use to it.These HDDs are hit or miss really. Some are manufactured good and some aren't. That's why some reviews rave about this drive and others claim it breaking not even 30 minutes after opening the box and setting it up.Go for a SeaGate Barracuda or a Caviar Black at least.

"Blue" is how Western Digital labels its non- specialized drives. This product isn't specifically low power (that would be Green), high performance (Black), or long endurance (Red). Combined with a rather low price, some might call this a "value" drive. The first thing I noticed when I handled the drive is how light it is. I double-checked with my kitchen scale and indeed, it's almost half the weight of my older Black drive. Upon closer inspection, the platter stack (covered by plastic of course) is also much thinner. This is a very good thing - it means that WD uses modern high- density platters, which uses less power and increases performance.I was surprised to get a read speed of 177 MB/sec out of this drive. This is much better than my 4-year old Black drive (109 MB/s), and also better than my Green drive (120 MB/s). As expected, the operation temperature lies between the Black (hot) and Green (lukewarm). In term of quietness, it's actually closer to the Green drive (nearly silent) than the Black drive (quite loud when the heads move). In short, this is a great middle-of-the-road drive, with good performance. The only thing I don't like about this series is that the capacity tops out at 1TB. Considering the thin drive stack, I'm sure WD could make larger versions, but simply doesn't want to cannibalize sales of the other series.

I received a sample unit of the WD10EZEX 1 TB 7200 RPM drive with 64 MB cache for review. Formatting and testing it in an external firewire 800 dock on a Mac, it felt as warm (not hot) as a WD 'Green' drive, but was definitely a bit noisier: there is an audible ticking sound during drive access that I don't hear with the Green line of drives. It seems a good value proposition for internal storage or an external backup drive, although I'm not sure I would have purchased it had I not been offered a test unit. The Amazon price for either a 2 TB WD Green drive, twice the storage, or a 1 TB WD Black drive - higher performance and 5 year warranty - is not substantially greater than the cost of this drive. Personally, I prefer WD Black for internal and the larger capacity WD Green for backups or media. But, if you're on a tight budget, this drive is worth considering. The drive requires a special formatting utility download if you're running XP. For OS X or newer versions of Windows, the 'advanced format drive' can be formatted properly by the OS. For Windows users, WD offers a free download of a special version of Acronis True Image to allow upgraders to clone their internal drive onto this new drive to make it your new boot drive. (Mac users can clone with Disk Utility or various well-known 3rd party programs.)

My previous hard drive-a Seagate Baracuda 7200.12 750gb-model ST3750528AS-- was very noisyI owned one that came with with my Emachines computer that Stopped working after a couple of years.I purchased the exact model as a backup up and it too was noisy- I was concerned that it too would crash and burn soon, so Isought out a WD based on recomendations and researchI Have been Pleasantly surprised so far!I have had this drive for about a month. In reviews I have read, these are a gold standard among builders because they last.My hope is that this will prove true years from now.One thing that has sold me is that Western Digital is by far the quietest Hard Drive I have used. The WD has a larger cache than the seagate-64 mb- and so loads faster. And the extra space is great for storing music, videos...etc.I would highly recomend this drive to anyone seeking to upgrade.Great warranty as well.

My old iMac 17 inch was starting to get slow and I was constantly getting the spinning ball of wait. Plus my old hard drive was almost full and I wanted more space. I figured I could get a few more years out of the 17 inch so I though I go the external hard drive route. I also have two mac in two locations and wanted them to be a mirror of each other. So, I bought a Voyager Q external hard drive stand and this 1 TB drive so I can use the 1 TB drive on either computer and I can pop in other Hard dives as needed. The drive made all the difference to my macs performance. I cloned my iMac's drive to the 1TB drive, did all the permissions and rebuilding stuff to the system to get it all ship shape. On the old drive this helped a tiny bit but with the new drives 64 MB cache what a difference. The old iMac really performs- I'd say 2 to 3 time faster. Plus, as the dive is sitting right next to me, 2/3 exposed sitting in the Voyager Q stand I can say it is very quiet. I'm sure if it was inside a PC you wouldn't hear a thing. And it runs very cool. All in all a good hard drive.
