My background - very experienced computer user. I have built them from scratch and play around with them all the time.I was excited about the prospect of this drive... energy efficient, SATA 3, 64MB Cache, 2.5 TB - sounds great. Even paid for overnight delivery.Unfortunately, the one I got worked sometimes, not others. Got messages around 'bad sectors'. Could not fix. Worked fine as an externally attached hard drive (most of the time). Did not work at all internally when connected to SATA cables.Sunday, I gave up and bought a Seagate Barracuda Green 2 TB drive at BestBuy. Connected the SATA cables and works flawlessly. I was up and running in less than ten minutes.I have had plenty of Western Digital drives in the past, but, this is my first "dud" from them. So sometimes you get a bad drive. It happens. Not happy about this drive, but, I wont necessarily exclude WD from the future. But, if the Seagate continues to run great, they will be my first choice.I will update this review if the Seagate goes down. (It would only be fair.)

I initialized it using a GUID Partition Table (GPT) and performed an initial long format. It formatted to 2.7 TB (3 TB actual). It finished in a few hours; then I copied it full of videos. Transfer rates were in the 90-100 mb/sec range. The source drives used for this copy operation were only SATA II capable, but current mechanical Hard Drive surface xfer rates don't exceed SATA II spec. anyway (3Gb / sec). Thus the SATA III interface (6Gb / sec) on this drive is overkill.It is now part of my Win 7 Media system and is being used as a buffer for my DVDs; allowing push button access to my movies without having to get up and load them into the DVD player each time I want to watch. Video plays back smooth and nice.Great price (apprrox $41 per terabyte) and I guess time will tell how reliable they are... ;-)Update 09/29/2012:1 year and STILL going strong. :-)

I try not to review things like this right away, because hard drives can often be defective, then need to be shipped back, and then of course at that point the transaction is not really complete..Well, this worked out great from the start and I've had no problems.I have been satisfied with this purchase.

Used to always trust WD drives over other vendors especially Seagate. However, more recently, it looks like the Quality & Dependability of these hard drives have gone down the tubes.I had ordered 2 x WD 2TB internal drives (WD20EARX) from Amazon. Received the drives and had them configured in RAID-1 configuration without any problems. In a little less than 3 weeks one of the two drives failed. I was lucky that the drive failed in < 30 days as I was able to do a standard Amazon return as oppose to going through the hard drive manufacturer.Going to replace the failed drive with another WD drive to see if I just happened to get a bad apple. If WD do not work out the 2nd time around, I'll have to switch to Hitachi brand.

Just remember to set the jumper if you only have a Sata 3gb/sec MOBO. I plugged it in, powered up to Windows 7, and formatted the drive using the GUID Partition Table (GPT). Works like a champ.

First of all, I would not recommend this drive or any WD Caviar drives for a RAID setup. I initially tried to set these up in RAID 1 and ran into problems and slow access times. I contacted WD and they told me they are not designed for RAID and they don't guarantee them to work in RAID (apparently they have a separate model for that). Next, I ran them as solo drives, but just wanted satisfied with their performance. It is a 5400 rpm drive, and it is designed for value, rather than speed.I understand the need for some people to value price over speed, so I took that into consideration and just tried to evaluate it on performance against other models. I did some benchmarking on it and it just doesn't compare to the Samsung Spinpoint F4EG 2 TB SATA2 5400rpm 32 MB Hard Drive HD204UI/Z4 which is the same price but outperformed this drive.

I bought 2 hard drives, and had them installed in a RAID configuration using a synology disk manager. Everything seemed to work fine, until one hard drive crashed last night. It's disappointing to have stumbled into such bad luck, but I'm going to go ahead and purchase another drive. I'll see what happens.

I was never a fan of Western Digital drives...until I tried these 2 drives. VERY quite, fast...replaced two drives in a LaCie 2BigTriple and they now outperforms the original drives in both speed and sound. these drives are nearly silent...highly recommended!

I purchased this drive based on good experiences with other Western Digital Drives. Unfortunately, this one had problems on three computers so I called WD Technical Support and after several tests it was determined that the hard drive had "too many bad sectors" to complete a low level test of the drive. It is going back to Amazon. I have two other WD green drives that have no problems so this might just be a lemon. Thus, the three stars rather than 1. It is still a hassle exchanging drives.

I bought this drive to store backups of my desktop and notebook computers. I've been running it for about 2 months without problems. The access speeds are acceptable for a storage (video, backup, NAS) applications or as a secondary drive. However, I would not recommend this drive for desktop or gaming systems.Fortunately, I bought it at $150 before the great Thailand flood. Should have bought more. :-(Running FreeBSD 9.0 RC1 with ZFS using 4K sectors as a secondary storage drive.
