The hard drive arrived within a few days--ahead of schedule. It was easy to install. But be forewarned, there is no SATA cable in the box. Order one if you don't have an open cable. It is working fine.

I bought 2 of these drives at the end of December 2011 to use with a Synology DS212+ that I bought at the same time. I installed each drive this past weekend in the DS212, as per the instructions, and one drive just sat there clicking a number of times for about a minute, then stopped clicking, and was unrecognized and non-functional. The other drive worked fine. What bothers me is how can I be sent two drives and one does not work at all? It certainly does not inspire confidence in this product nor in WD. What sort of quality control do they have that allows a defective drive like this to get out the door? To make sure it was not a problem with the DS212 I swapped the drive bays and, sure enough, the non-functional drive would not work in the second bay and the working drive operated properly in the first bay. So, the non-functioning drive is definitely defective. Now I must go through the hassle of returning it and buying another replacement and being unable to use my DS212 (which I intend to use in RAID 1 mode) until the replacement arrives. Very frustrating.

i have 24 of these drives. 3 raid boxes with 8 drives each (raid 5 and raid 6). i have only had one drive fail in 1-2 years. the key to my success is ensuring proper cooling by: 1. implementing power management spin-down features and adequate fans + ventilation.

I've been very happy with my new drive. It's been running in my computer for 6 weeks now and b/c it was replacing a failed drive and I had a backup, I was able to swap in this one and be up and running in less than an hour.It was as if nothing had happened and was seamless. This drive was way bigger than my last one, but the Restore worked fine and then left me a whole bunch of extra space to partition, etc. Cool.Highly recommended to replace or "upgrade" an older system that has SATA. Oh, I did have to go buy a SATA cable which was a pain. It would have been nice if they included one in the box.

Not an SSD, but will be more than adequate for storing music and other data. I am a little jaded as I purchased an SSD drive as well at the time and it is amazingly quicker. I went with a 256Gb SSD and this as my secondary drive. Working very well with this setup so far, does require that you are fairly careful about where you set things up to be stored and to be downloaded to as the smaller SSD can be filled without much effort/thought, but overall well worth the expense. Drive itself is bare bones BTW, no cables or instructions included, which is to be expected but not for a new person I suppose.

I bought the Western Digital Caviar Green drive, 1.5 TB, based on the generally good reviews, the reasonable price (about $115), and also because it comes with free software (WD Acronis TrueImage, available as a free download on the WD Support site) so that I could create a bootable backup of my disk drive. The drive works just fine (based on 1 week of use), but the free software refused to install, repeatedly saying that I don't have a WD drive installed on my system. I tried WD support, which did respond, but their suggestion was simply to download and try installing the software again, to no avail. So, I ended up using another product to clone my hard drive onto the WD drive. So far, the WD drive is fast, quiet, and working fine with about 100,000 files on it, and lots of free room for future use.

I bought these drives for a computer that will primarily be used as a server (kept on long hours.)I've had two problems working with it in Linux. In the first case - by computer did not recognize it as a 2TB drive because the bios (about 2 years old) had trouble recognizing the advanced format (4k sectors vice 512bit sectors It took a lot of research on the net to figure out how to install these drives correctly and format them.In the second case I realized I was getting a fair number of Load Cycle Counts (using the smartmon tools in linux. This is because they are green drives and park the heads after 8 seconds (to save energy). To rectify this I had to use the wdidle3 tool on a boot disk in linux (not easy). I tried disabling the timer with wdidle3 but was unsuccessful (that made it even worse - the drive was parking every second or so). I did it again and set the timer to 300 seconds (the maximum allowed) and it seems to be behaving with those numbers.I have a hard time faulting WD for this, I don't think they hide anything in their descriptions. But it did make for a very difficult refurbishment of this computer. If I had it to do over again I would suggest using the "Black" or "Blue" drives. This should (at least) solve the Load Cycle Count (LLC) problem. I have never had performance problems with WD drives.

I bought several drives recently to increase the storage on my HP MediaSmart server (EX470). The first drive I bought was 3TB, and after hours of trying to figure out why the server wasn't reading the full capacity of the drive, I found out it was not compatible. The 2nd drive was a seagate that was DOA. This was the 3rd drive I bought. After hours spent with the other drives, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I could pop this one in and there where no issues. Might be a little pricey, and it may not hold the most data, and it may not be the fastest drive, but the fact that it worked was good enough for me. If you are looking to increase the capacity of your 1st gen HP MediaSmart server, this is the drive for you.

Excellent HD. Plenty fast for desktop use. Well packed. Ran Disk mark, got 110 mbs read and 47 mbs write. Now running this WD 2TB Green as my primary drive and 1.5 TB WD green as a secondary drive for data folders (doc's, pictures's etc). The Cloning (imaging) software is available on WD's web site for free. It is "True Image" (147 mb) in their (support) downloads section. After searching all cloning programs I thought I would check the HD makers and they all offer one free. This one from WD is the best. I mean "Why Pay for it, if it's FREE"? It works GREAT, cloned to new drive and booted to new drive in about 30 min's counting the old drive removal time and installation of the new drive. Everything was there, all programs, settings etc...Perfect.

I purchased 2 of these to use in a Raid 1 setup. The speed and price of these drives is great, except both died within 1 year. These drives got regular use, and I would expect them to last longer than 6 months. One died after 4 months, the other at 6 months. Both have been replaced under warranty but now I am worried of losing my data on these new drives. For one drive to die, I would have assumed I just got a bad one, but for both, I am assuming that these drives are junk.

I picked up 5 of these at $150/ea and put them in a Hardware RAID5 array. Despite all of the hype, these drives were noticeably slower than my 5x Samsung F4s in Hardware RAID5. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed at that.Aside from that, they sip power, and are 3TB

2TB hard drive was used with Macally USB/FW enclosure. The combination seemed to work well for about five months. Then the hard drive died... could not even be recognized by BIOS via any data port of the enclosure on PC or Mac. Tried to access drive directly using USB-to-SATA/IDE connection... same result. Am sending drive back under warranty to Western Digital. I've never had a hard drive fail so quickly. Very surprised and disappointed with this product so far. Hopefully the replacement drive can at least last longer than the first one. Maybe six months?

This was the first "bare" drive that I have purchased from Amazon. I was surprised at the very poor packing job that Amazon did for a "bare" drive. The "padding" consisted of standard shipping air bags, all of which had deflated. The supposedly air tight protective pouch on the drive had worn through in the corners, and the drive showed some cosmetic wear along some edgesAmazon will hopefully (eventually) learn that "standard" shipping air bags are unsuitable for shipping hard drives, because corners of the drive will puncture them.In the mean time watch out for poorly packaged drives, and do not hesitate to make Amazon take them back. And to rate the drive itself, I use 3TB drives from both WD and Hitachi for backup. I've not noticed much difference between this WD drive and the Hitachi equivalent, though the WD seems slightly "noisier" than the Hitachi. Both makes seem about equal in their longevity.

I spent what must have been days looking nervously at reviews for these large capacity drives. Almost anywhere you go, nearly every large capacity drive has about 20% of user reviews claiming immediate or short-term failure. On Amazon, the caviar black (at sixty bucks more expensive for the same capacity) has the best user reviews in the consumer space. That said, if you're storing 2+ TB of... well, anything really, and you don't use SOME sort of redundancy system (I prefer Drobo; RAID or windows home server, or even a RAID 1 NAS box like a DNS-323 would also work) you may as well start writing your 1 star review as well. If you spend the money to set yourself up for success, you won't be disappointed. My array built on these disks is running like a champ!

Simply put, this hard drive came defective. Now, I've used many WD drives in the past, and they've all worked well, but that really doesn't excuse this. I bought this hard drive back in November, but I never got around to installing it until a few days ago. I've spent hours trying to repair all the bad sectors, but nothing seems to be working. I've run WD Data Lifeguard Tools, and it fails to find any errors (I guess that their software is just as crappy as this defective drive). I've also run several professional tools to diagnose and correct any bad sectors, but none of them work. This wouldn't be so bad, except that I am past the deadline for returns. Is this really fair? I only opened the package a few days ago. This item came defective, and I shouldn't be stuck with it. At the moment, about all it's good for is a $150 doorstop or paperweight.

I was not sure if my old iMac could handle a 1TB hard drive but installation was very easy and after installing the OS it worked perfectly. Noise is similar to my old 250GB drive which is to say not very loud, only slightly noticeable. I didn't really measure but my impression after 2 months is that the computer starts faster.
