Picking a hard drive these days is not easy. HD companies are bought and sold, quality goes up and down. WD is usually pretty good, I have a heavily used WD Caviar Black in my workstation, it is probably the best mechanical drive out of more than 7TB of hard drives, including Seagate and Samsung drives.These WD Green drives are too slow for a main boot drive in a computer, but they work great for storage or in entertainment centers, I purchased the drives to go in a NAS device.Let's see how long they last.....

Why is everyone complaining about the speed on these hard drives? They are meant to be for storage and not for installing your OS. I think the size is huge and the price is reasonable. I love this hard drive and I think people need to look at this hard drive from a different perspective rather than criticizing it for being slow. If you want speed, you should buy an SSD.

I needed a third hard drive to go with my SSD and Western Digital Caviar Black. This one is for image backups so I can avoid the distress of a rebuild should my SSD fail. The drive came well packaged in factory wrap and in a Western Digital box with the serial number on the outside. Amazon then put this box into one of their shippping boxes with paper fill.The drive worked as expected out of the box. When I did the default image and data backup using Windows 7, it took about 45 minutes. I still have a lot of space available for other uses. Good product and good supplier.

I had this product for about 6 months now, and let me tell you, I have been using it HARD, I leave the PC on about 5 days a week, and I use it for gaming hard with it, Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Witcher 2, etc, for 5+ hour sessions.I have it with an Intel i5-2500k overclocked to 4.2ghz, two Ati 6950 in crossfire, 8GB Ram, a Mushkin 120gb SSD, powered by a 750w PSU.It has been flawless so far, it came very well packed (resisted the shipping to Miami, Miami-Bogota, Bogota-Medellin). Recommended 100%.

In the midst of a worldwide hard drive shortage, this unit was available for about $149 with free Prime shipping. This was the lowest cost/GB that I could find available from any online source, for a drive from a well-known manufacturer with decent performance specifications. It is working fine for streaming high definition video and music, which is my primary application. I am using two of these in a RAID 1 configuration in a Synology DS211j NAS. These drives are listed by Synology as compatible with their NAS products. I have another Synology NAS, a DS210j, that I previously put together in RAID 1 with two Samsung F3R HD103J 1 TB 7200 rpm drives. I do not notice any difference in performance with the Western Digital Caviar Green drives compared to the Samsungs. Both have about the same spin-up time after being left sitting idle for a period of time. They are solidly built...I did not get a sense that they are in any way cheaply made. I am pleased with the value represented by these drives.

This is one large, roomy hard drive that is excellent fora secondary storage drive. I would not recommend usingit as a primary boot drive. I personally have 3 of thesehooked-up as D:, E: and F: drives on my pc, very roooomy.

The one I ordered was the 2TB one. I ran HD Tune on the drive immediately after I received this hard drive. Surprisingly, the drive has 9 percents damaged blocks. The worse thing was, whenever I tried to run the benchmark test, the "read error" window popped up. HD Tune was not able to run benchmark tests on this hard drive. This is the first time I have a bad experience with WD hard drive. I hope this is not common on other green drives. I suggest run a hard drive test before you put files on it. I needed two drives for a NAS server. 1 of the 2 original drives I purchased was DOA. After returned the DOA drive I got a second drive that lasted about 2 weeks before it started throwing I/O errors and the system notified me that the drive was failing and needed to be replaced. I am now on drive number 4 which is working...for now.Interestingly I purchased the NAS drive because I had an external drive fail on me after years of service. All hard drives fail eventually but WD is terrible. When you finally get the right drives I think you will be happy, however:1) BUY FROM A STORE YOU CAN RETURN TO..i.e AMAZON or FULFILLED BY AMAZON BECAUSE THESE FAIL (50% in my case 2/4)2) DO NOT BE SHY ABOUT RETURNING DRIVES AT THE FIRST SIGN OF ERRORS

I bought this drive in Dec 2011 to use in a system that I was building for casual gaming, after only a few short months, in February I started getting the SMART errors telling me that the drive was failing and that I needed to back up my hard drive. It then failed on back-up. Although it is still under warranty and I can get a replacement for just the shipping cost, I opted to go with the Black version and I will use the replacement as a backup. I guess I should've just spent the little extra and gone with the Black from the beginning.

Purchased this drive along with the DLink NAS (as its storage unit) - because Amazon recommended it.To date, I'm very happy with the drive's performance. I've had it for over a month now with no problems at all.I've backed up and restored a least 1.5T of data over that time - from both pc and mac systems, with no problems.Overall, its quick and quite and is not noticeable in any way - just like a drive should be.I can say that so far the drive is working flawlessly - and I recommend it.I'll come back and post any negatives if the drive gives me any problems in the future.

This is probably the 3rd or 4th Western Caviar green drive I have purchased (various capacities) for over a year's time. No failures on any of them and sometimes I leave them on overnight via my Thermaltake Docking station. All drives came well packaged. So to sum up, they arrive protected in good packaging, have not failed yet, and can be used on extended run times without crashing. So far that is.
