The drive mounted ok and the read/write was acceptable but OMG the thing sounded like a pack of mice were inside gnawing metal. There was such a huge grinding of metal on metal I'm sure it's defective. It's going back.

The new Caviar Black 1 Terabyte drive is quite incredible. So much storage at a very reasonable price. Installation into my HP a1630n was straight forward, and the SATA connection was very nice. No jumpers to configure or other issues. I will say that formatting took quite a while, but I did opt for a full format, not the quick one. Considering the 1 terabyte size, several hours to format was not unexpected.I don't notice much heat difference, although I also installed a new video card at the same time, so I would think it is more from that. The drive is also very quiet, I am not sure why others mentioned it could be noisy. I am not hearing any noise issues.I immediately backed all my systems on the network to this drive and feel much better, knowing I have an image for all 3 other systems. So far I am very satisfied with the WD drive and hope it lives up to the descriptive features of automatic error correction and internal diagnostics. I feel with the features, it was worth the extra money over a WD Green or Blue series.

I needed the drive mostly to store big amounts of video. It's a good performer. Easy to install. However a couple days after I got it, the Western Digital Green 1.5TB price was lowered under $100, that's what I was looking for in first place.I have purchased books from Amazon that come well packaged and bubble wrapped inside the box. This one came inside a box with the drive loose covered with plastic. This is in fact a very dangerous packaging that may lower the life of the drive.

I've been using a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB drive on my Mac Pro for well over half a year now.It's a really great Hard Drive so far. The best internal Hard Drive that I've personally experienced.The drive is big, very fast, cool running and has just a bit of seek noise."Seek Noise" is the clattering that can be heard when a drive is accessing data.Fortunately, this WD1001FALS does have an "Acoustic Management" feature than can be adjusted by use of a Hitachi utility called "Feature Tool".Turning the Acoustic mode "ON" does make the drive quite a bit quieter at the expense of seek time.For use on a Mac Pro you do not need any additional cables or screws so the OEM or Bulk drive is OK.Just open the case, pull out a Drive "Carrier", attach the drive with the screws already on the Carrier and slide it in. Start the system and use Disk Manager to set up the drive.I even managed to copy my original drive directly to it with a minimum of fuss. (and then removed the original) for a lot more space and a little bit faster boot time.As a whole the system seems just a bit snappier when opening apps, rendering or saving big files.Someday, I'm going to get three more of these for this 4-drive system.Have Fun,Keri

I have been evaluating 1TB hard drives to replace a failed RAID array. I had just bought a WD Green 1TB drive, but it was DOA. I returned it to Amazon without problems. Then I started reading a lot of reviews online.The decision came down to a Samsung Spinpoint F1 or a WD Caviar Black 1TB. [[[***Note to those of you looking for hard drives for RAIDs, Drobo, or constant, heavy use: WD Blue label drives and Green label drives are not specifically certified for RAID-type use. The WD Black label isn't, either; but note that it has a 5-year warranty instead of the usual 3-year standard drive warranty. There was conflicting warranty information about the Samsung drive (though it is RAID-certified); some sites said three years, others five.***]]]The WD drive so far: quiet, fast. I've had a few WD drives fail, but overall, WD still is my favorite for reliability and quality, as well as problem-free operation. And this drive features a 5-year warranty. . .seems worth your consideration for that rare feature alone!A caveat to Amazon: I'm not impressed with the packaging on this drive or the DOA drive I received several weeks ago. Two bubble bags are not sufficient to immobilize the product in the shipping box. Granted, the drive heads should be parked after manufacture to prevent platter damage, but I don't think the product getting slammed around more than it needs to inside the box does it any good. Please pack hard drives better, Amazon!

So far after I installed the drive, worked out of box once installed to the computer. Although it is a little slow sometimes, it still does the job. Does everything I need it to do and that is to hold my Vienna Symphonic Library.

Good drive; plenty of space to install programs and store files; runs pretty fast with 32MB cache; from what I've heard/read WD caviar black is a reliable brand, it's running well on my PC so far (not too much noise coming from it), I guess time will tell whether it has longevity. Window 7 rated 5.9/7.9.Amazon delivered the product fairly fast and in good condition. It was bubble wrapped and placed in a holder; very secure. I bought it as a bare drive, so no screws or anything provided in the package for you.For 10GB per dollar, this is definitely a good drive!

Received this drive DOA . Contected Amzon on the net and they had a new drive out to me priorty mail the same day. Rec the new drive in 4 days 2 of them being the week end. The new drive is what I have come to expect from WD. It is nothing but WD for me because of the warrenty and customer support.

I purchased 3 of these to start. My primary use is on a Windows 7 64 Bit intel i7 950 6GB RAM on an EVGA X58 SLI LE, I use one WD6401AALS as the primary drive OS and APPS and the other two in a RAID 0 array for my D: (Video Disk) I have had awsome results with these drives. I've compared them to other drives on the internet and from other reviews these drives are great and even better in a raid configuration. I'm in the process of buying one more and will be running a raid 0 on both my OS and APPS and as my D: drive for video editing. I dont know if this is the best configuration for what i want, but i will find out and let you know. Either way, get these drives over any other. I wouldn't spend the money again on a WD Raptor or even the velociraptor.

This hard drive was shipped as though it was a book, there was no packing material whatsoever. That is a huge error on Amazon.com's part. It would be easy for the drive to get damaged due to the poor shipping method. You wouldn't know until months later. Fortunately Amazon.com has put the item under review and is not shipping it right now. Wait for another review after the date of this one to be sure the shipping method is decent. The hard drive should not shake when shipped. It should have ample packing material and fit tightly in the box. Otherwise it is supposed to be a very good drive at a decent price.

I know very little about computers other than our original hard drive was running out of space due to the mass amounts of family pictures and video. I talked to some IT guys at work and they preferred Western Digital over Seagate. I read the reviews and was aware this drive was bulk/OEM and it came with nothing. I didn't purchase the right angle SATA II cable but wish I had; ended up buying it at a local store for a few bucks more. Installed this drive on a 2 yr old Dell XPS which came with an extra power supply cord, chassis and screws. Followed the installation instructions posted in the review "Beginner's guide to adding a second hard drive, May 3, 2009, by Sandstone" with a little help from Window's Vista webpage on how to prepare a new hard drive. I can't stress enough how very easy and painless this all was. Now our computer has amazing speed using the original 250 MB drive for program and operating software only and this new 1 TB drive for storage. The price was great and has even dropped $5 since I purchased this drive. I might buy another to replace our original 250 MB hard drive because the specs of these drives are so much faster. A great, great product for the average home computer.

I am very happy with this drive. It was super easy to install, is very quiet and is more than sufficient for my needs. I will not hesitate to purchase another Western Digital Black Caviar 750GB drive as I continue to upgrade my computer (I have an Intel Dual core Duo processor). The only thing I would mention is that it was not stated that this was an OEM drive, which means it comes without documentation or normal packaging -- However, your computer manual should tell you how to install/replace a hard drive. As usual it was a pleasure doing business with Amazon.com and I will certainly continue to do so.SandiB

This is fun because I'm only going to comment about the packaging used to deliver my new WD750 Black. After reading other WD/Amazon reviews that described the sorry state of product packaging, I was 'cautious' about ordering a new HD from Amazon. Well, I can only guess that Amazon actually read some of the criticisms and made a beeline to their shipping department to correct the issue. Here's a description of the packaging condition my new HD arrived in.When I got home from work, the box was lying on my desk. I lifted the box and gently tilted it from side to side. No noise was heard or movement inside the box felt. The weight seemed centered. I opened the box and was greatly surprised to see the new HD nestled between two Styrofoam forms designed to hold the product in the middle and prevent ANY product shifting. The HD was wrapped in a static bag and securely embedded in the Styrofoam blocks at each end.Like I said earlier, I couldn't be more pleased with the shipping and product condition upon arrival. Guess now I'll install the HD and see how it works.Thanks to all who previously critiqued the Amazon shipping. I think your voices were heard.

I purchased this HD to replace a failed 320g HD in my 2 year old aluminum iMac. All I can say is "wow!". Applications and video open almost instantly and I experience no stutter in movies. I broke open the iMac and installed it myself. I then formatted the drive and restored a disk image backup. I now have a much faster drive and an additional 600g of space.For the money, I find this hard to beat. Perhaps the 2TB model might be a contender. This drive is fast, has 32mb cache, advanced technologies, and a 5 year warranty.If I had anything negative to say it would be that it is a little louder than my previous drive but not to the point where it is a big deal. Also, as a performance drive, it uses more power than for example the Caviar Green series. These are minor points and I have to say I 100% recommend this drive.

I've only had this drive installed a few hours, but it is the noisiest drive that I have ever had in a PC. It probably would not matter in an office environment, but it is a bother in a quiet room at home. Hopefully, that will be my only probem with it.

If you happen to buy one of these drives made in 2010+, WD has modified the firmware to prohibit the use of TLER (time-limited error recovery) software necessary to use these drives in typical RAID configurations. Why? So WD can sell you their RE3+ (Raid Enabled) drives that typically cost 50% more. Drives made in 2009 probably allow WDTLER to work.

I needed a harddrive to use in an automated back-up system that would turn itself on, activate, then back-up six computers as scheduled, then shut down the six computer and itself. This product has speed, durability, and performance to accomplish this. Although I have had this product for only a few months, it has functioned as required. Only an RE version might have been a better choice.

Amazon listens!! I was concerned after reading reviews that the drive was package poorly. Not This One. It came in a heavy cardboard box with foam shipping support at each end of the drive. These little black supports were form fitted to the ends of the drive and supported it in such a way that the drive never contacted the box, kind of suspended and cushioned in the air. A+ for shipping.Thanks Amazon.Unit came from Lexington, KY

Two drives purchased. I partitioned one and copied 2-3 GB of extremely sensitive data to it. After the copy operation, computer crashed and would not reboot with the drive mounted. Not with Windows XP SP3 (would not boot), not with Western Digital's diagnostic boot CD (black screen), not with Ubuntu Livedisk (did not see the drive), not with a fully installed Ubuntu OS (same). Ok, the drive is bad. It happens. But WD should at least be willing to take responsibility. I spoke to three Sorrybots in Bangalore. They wanted to charge my credit card for $250 pending receipt of the bad drive while I tried to find a way to get my data erased from the drive. I paid less than $250 for two of these things. Absurd.Now, I understand it's not their fault in Bangalore and there's nothing they can do except say "sorry" over and over again. Each asked if I wanted to be transferred higher up the line. Each time I said yes, the next sorrybot came taking a turn saying "sorry". Finally I got California. After 20 min of WDC's lovely hold music I got someone who could make it right. Should not have taken that much time or effort on my part.Oh yeah, the 2nd drive which was treated exactly the same, works fine. But is is noisy. Noisier than any HD I've ever had. Like a jackhammer. If you're looking for something to store media files on, don't even think about this one unless you can tolerate a lot of background noise. I don't know, but I'm told that Seagate's 1TB is much quieter.Two stars for product quality. Zero stars for service.

I bought this drive for direct replacement of a WD250 drive. The WD500Black has different connections, as it lacks the MOLEX power connector. Hence, no simple exchange. The WD web site has Installation Instructions page which showsthe MOLEX connector. They call it "legacy".It took several calls to WD to clarify the issue. Just short of RMA-ing it for exchange (it looks defective).Had to buy a SATA to SATA cable and an adapter for the power connection.This information should be available for potential buyers and confused owners.

I bought this to add to my new HP 6267 desktop.Reading the reviews here, I found out I needed to order an eSata data cable, which I did. Thanks to the folks who mentioned that.When I went to install it, however, the HP only had power connectors for the old, 4 pin Molex drive power ports. Since an eSata to 4 pin molex adapter is not a regularly stocked item at Radio Shack or Best Buy, I had to order it on-line, meaning a $2 part, $10 shipping and another weeks wait to install the drive into my PC.Bottom line - check your power supply to make sure you can connect it to an eSata drive.

I purchased this drive from Amazon and installed it in my iMac. Everything went well until I went to register the drive with Western Digital. I registered the drive online at WD's website. After finishing the registration process, I noticed that WD only gave me a 3 year warranty. The warranty for Black Caviar drives is 5 years (both retail and OEM). I contacted WD support and they told me that since the drive was OEM, they could only guarantee it for 3 years! After escalating the issue (10+ e-mails and 5 phone calls to WD support) did they finally adjust it to 5 years. It took an act of god and congress but WD finally relented. When you register the drive, make sure you get the 5 year warranty.

8/1/12 edit: wow, >$175 for a $100 hdd... Boo Amazon! I noticed prices of drives climbing, but nearly double past prices is dumb. Shop around until you can get below a hundred bucks per Gb for internal drives...especially for old-school SATA2 drives! SATA3 is the new hotness, so that's why I said above that today's price on this drive is beyond 'tarded...Original review: The WD Caviar Black is a large 1TB drive that compares quite superiorly to other drives according to SandraLite. It even came in closely behind my 300GB VelociRaptor, which seems to be the top desktop drive out through spring 2009. I searched the egg, but found that Amazon had the best prices around. My HDD addition has not disappointed to date with storing and using movie backups, music and programs. I wanted to go larger at first, but other brands at 1.5TB and above were rumored to spontaneously freeze for minutes at a time during movie and music playback...that is not the case for any 1TB Caviar to my knowledge, and it certainly is not the case for my drive either.The only oddity that I have noticed for this drive is at its intial spinup when booting the PC: the HDD's initialization is marked by several very high-pitched whines that are almost bell-like in nature. But, with WD's warranty to fall back on in the event of trouble, I'm not as worried about my purchase as I could be. I just hope that I never have to use the warranty!Overall: no real complaints~it's a great drive with superior performace at the best price+shipping around!

Received the drive in perfect condition and it was double-boxed and the holders in the 1st box held the drive securly in place. I looked at the date on the drive which read Oct. 2009, so it looks like Western Digital or possibly Amazon is now packing these drives up very tight, so they are not simply dropped inside one box like others have claimed in the past. Great job Amazon!I bought this drive because it seems like the best reviewed Sata drive on the market at present and supposedly the best 7200 RPM drive out. Check out Toms Hardware for a full review of the drive and a comparison to other Sata Drives. They really really like this drive and rate it towards the top for speed and overall performance. I plan on buying another soon as $95 for a 1 TB drive of this calibur with no tax and no shipping charges just can't be beat anywhere.

Easy to install, high performance, and the well know reputability from Western Digital. Be ware though, if you try to check SMART test status of the drive using any third party utility you might receive some error codes, may be because of lacking of support of this new model on old SMART checking software! You can check this drive's health status only by using Western Digital's own (Data Lifeguard Diagnostic) software.

This is the third 1TB black I have bought from WD and they run quiet smooth and fast. The first one was bought in October and so far so good. Shipping was great. The second however I bought an OEM and the box looked like it got kicked! It was also wrapped pretty badly, with just a few of those bubble wrap things in the box. Most of the bubbles were popped so I have been wary to use the drive for very long. The last one I got a few days ago and it was packed very solid.

I bought this drive for extra storage. I've installed many drives with no problems so it never occurred to me to worry about the quality of Western Digital's tech support. The drive works, but only under the right conditions. After trying everything I could think of, including flashing the motherboard and controller BIOS, installing the latest drivers etc, I contacted WD tech support. After a month or so of going back and forth with them, two things became clear: I know more about computers than they do (turns out, so does my dog) and I now have the world's highest storage-capacity paperweight. Fortunately, HD drives are usually very easy to install and rarely cause problems. If you're one of the few that does have a problem, you'd better hope you don't have to get your support from WD. I think that if they wanted to, they could forward the really difficult problems to their design and engineering people. But rather than getting serious about solving the problem, after a few scripted-checklist attempts, their goal becomes simply to get rid of you.

I have two 640Mb Western Digital internal hard drives and now this 1Tb internal drive. Western Digital are legendary drive manufacturers and despite a few hiccups here and there, they are quite consistent in driving hard at dependable and affordable technology that packs a punch when it comes to performance.This is the "black" edition, which is recommend for power users such as gamers or people who need a little more speed for video etc.It's terribly simple to set these drives up in Windows Vista 64Bit Home Premium:1. Install the drive in a spare hard drive bay and connect a SATA cable and power cable (not supplied) to your motherboard and PSU.2. Boot, optionally verifying the drive is connected in your BIOS before loading the OS.3. Run Disk Management in Vista and initialize the drive (right click over the drive icon if initialization is required).4. Create partitions if desired, name them and Format.DONE!!

After purchasing my first 1TB Caviar Black a few months ago for my new computer build I just had to buy another. This is a very smooth and quiet running drive. Compared to my older (a couple years) 250GB WD drives, the 1TB Caviar Black trumps them all. This probably has mostly to do with drive platter density but having 32MB of cache and dual processors helps as well. It's quiet. It's fast. It's reliable. Just be sure to defragment at good intervals to maintain tip top shape.This is the best 1TB drive out there, I highly recommend it.Be aware that this is an OEM drive meaning you will have to supply your own screws (if your case requires screws for mounting) and you'll have to supply your own SATA cable.

I bought two of these to increase the amount of storage space within my desktop. Amazon provided easy packaging so no worries there (as always). Install of the drives went smoothly and after formatting them, I started to do some large file transfer tests. The speeds were fantastic and a huge upgrade from my year old 250 GB drive these two replaced.I have always used Western Digital and if they keep the quality at this level I don't see myself jumping ship at any point :).Highly recommend this drive to anyone needing huge storage space that allows for fast transfer speeds.

After a lot of research, I bought this HD to plug into the internal bottom dock of my Mac G-5 dual 2.0. Seemed like a good choice considering price and features. Installation was easy. Operates as expected. Seems to be fast. You can hear it working sometimes, but just barely. Time will tell about longevity. I'm happy so far.

About a year ago I bought this drive to replace a broken SimpleTech external hard drive (inside was a Hitachi something or other that broke within a year, I lost nearly 500GB of data). I am extremely impressed. I wear my hard drives pretty hard, I am constantly formatting, and partitioning it (I like to mess with Operating Systems, so I kinda end up breaking them, and having to re-install) and it goes through MANY MANY reads/writes every day.I have never experienced any access lag, and the read/write speeds for this are much faster than on my Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 250GB drive (I've had that drive for almost 5 years and it is still running great)I haven't had any corrupted sectors, or any problems of that ilk with this drive. Western Digital has a long reputation of building quality drives, and they definitely deliver on that here.

After reading all the great reviews of this hard drive. I've decided to buy it from somewhere else due to the negative reviews of the packaging. I'm planning on buying 8 of these drives and after reading someone else's review about buying 8 drives from Amazon, (each drive in an under-padded box, and all 8 boxes in an equally under-padded large box) I will not buy hard drives from Amazon.Update 12-11-2010:I decided to give Amazon a shot with my hard drive business so I bought a few drives from them. With Amazon Prime, the free shipping and fast delivery made the prices tough to beat. The drives came their own boxes loosely packed in a larger box that was minimally padded. Each drive was in its own box and held in place within by two foam armatures that immobilized the drive and provided shock mounting for the drive. The protection looked more than adequate. From this experience, I will buy more drives from Amazon.

I am just about to request a return label for my third drive in less than two months. The first began to get very noisy with heavy vibration after about 30 days. The second drive was extremely loud and upon heavy seek/write would have a metalic grinding sound. The third drive has the same issue. I can hear this drive over my fan and TV!I think I am done with WD for now. I have ordered a 7200.12 Seagate 1TB as my primary boot drive, so hopefully that will work fine once received. As long as it has good startup speeds and is quiet, I'll be happy - I am sick of opening my computer and cloning hard drives!As for Amazon's packaging of hard drives - it is horrible. A drive with a small sheet of bubble wrap in a box much larger than the drive is NOT safe packaging. I absolutely love Amazon and spend thousands here, but they really need a packaging lesson on fragile items such as a HD.Thought the 2TB would be good but no - LOUD! How can they say 32 bels when the Seagate XT is about the same. The XT is silent compared to this. This drive sounds like a 5 year old WD Blue!

Ok, I fix computers. For many years I almost exclusively find the best value in a Western Digital hard drive. This particular drive is being used as an internal backup storage device in a desktop computer. It has a 3 year warranty and it. I suspect that configuration will satisfy all my needs as the data contained on the OEM drive AND this backup drive is worth multiples of the cost of this purchase. I feel a certain bit of security knowing I have never had a call from any of my customers with complaints about a Western Digital hard drive failing. I have not lost any hard drives or data when using a WD Hard Drive for personal use either.

Order placed on february 10, 2010. Order came from Lexington KY US. Faulty Packaging allowing had drive to hit bottom of box, no bubble rap, no protective padding, dead upon arrival. Published photos on customer images. I know this is an OEM drive so it doesn't have a retail box of its own but the amazon frustration-free packaging does not protect the hard drive from any impact.

I have an 8 core Mac Pro. I do Audio Recording exclusively and little else. This Mac is the sole Recording machine in my studio. This is the smoothest running hard drive I've ever used! No audible Pops, Clicks and no "Disk running too slow" alert messages when running a project with "20 plus" tracks with multi plugins on every track in real time! As powerful as this Mac is, the stock drive was still very puny by comparable performance. Pro Audio is a very big deal and I never hear anybody talk about what works best for Pro Audio. It's always Photo Shop or some PC gamer and Window issues. I hope this helps!!

I filled 8 of these with some archival data and had no issues or DOA's. The drive is fast and runs fairly cool. Streaming raw data to these drives (from sector 0 to the end) I got an average write rate of around 60mbytes/sec across the disk (higher at the outer edge, lower near the middle as expected). On the read side I could sustain 85mbytes/sec on a streaming scan from the front to the back. These are competitive with Seagate Barracuda's in the same class and quite a bit cheaper.They are not rated for 24x7 enterprise operation so they may not be appropriate for use in a file server, for my purposes (archiving telemetry) this isn't an issue.The only negative is Amazon's packaging. Each of the 8 drives was put in a little cardboard box which was loosely packed with inflatable cushions, so loosely that the drives could bang around in their boxes easily. The 8 smaller boxes where put in a much larger box with too little fill so they all bounced around. None of them were DOA so I guess it was good enough.

Not truly much to say about a hard drive. Naturally easy to install, super quiet, with occasional normal HD spinning noise. Just installed it 2 months ago, and so far so good.Good price for a very good product.

Seems to perform quite well and seems quieter than the older Caviar Black I've got, but it's hard to tell as I've got it in a very loud server.

I got this before Christmas on sale.....great deal. This has made a HUGE difference in the boot up speed. I was using *apparently* much slower drive...this thing rocks.

After purchasing countless pre-assembled external drives, I decided to assemble some myself and test their performance out against the ones I previously purchased. After the test, I was pleasantly surprised to see that these Caviar Black HDDs combined with a MacAlly enclosure, far surpassed the performance of my Lacie drives which I used prior. As the description notes, these drives are specifically made for constant usage and I found no slowdowns, overheating, or failures running an entire photography library off these drives which is hundreds of gigabytes in size. The bottom line is if you're sick of getting ripped off buying pre-assembled drives, these are the answer you've been looking for!

Never a problem with WD Black. Plug it in, set the Dell BIOS to "on", fire it up, rename the drives and use it. I'm not running RAID, it's just another drive that I do a manual back up on. This is an OEM so don't forget to get a sata cable.

I bought this after obsessing over various makes of hard drives to upgrade my Mac Pro. I was impressed by the company video and by the users' reviews. The drive arrived promptly and well packed. Installing it was a snap and it worked immediately and remains my primary HD. My original is now my backup. I was not disappoinnted. After 2 months of continuous use I can recommend this 1 TB drive unreservedly: fast, quiet and dependable. You can' ask for anything more.

I bought two of these for my D-Link 321 NAS and they worked great. I've only had the NAS running for about two months but I haven't had any problems yet.
