Been using this hard drive for about half a year now and it is blazing fast. I use it on an older Intel dual core and it works perfectly. I've always stuck to Western Digital drives as they are the most reliable. I didn't want to pay as much for a SSD drive so I just got this Caviar Black drive. Using Windows 7(64 bit) and 4GB of RAM, this HD makes my computer fly. Highly recommended. Great deal on Amazon too.

Good drive, no problem there. There were no instructions or warranty card or anything in the box except the drive. Also, something as delicate as a hard drive should have some protective packaging and FRAGILE marked on the outside. Amazon could do better that that.

Western Digital suffered from a visibility thing for a long time. Their drives would play the grindy game back in the day of 160GB drives, but vast improvements of their technology made these the go-to drives for me when building a system.I tend to buy a WD Black for any system that doesn't require blazing fast drives that sing and dance in the SSD / 10K RPM data load areas, and frankly not many people "need" that except for overcompensating gamers. The one machine I could possibly use that for is a hyped-up editing system that I need fast access, but frankly I'm not going to load up a 512GB SSD drive with all of my movie-making data just to shave off a few minutes from my edits.I have battered these little puppies around like you wouldn't believe, dropping them, leaving them in hot cars, and even in one memorable instance forgetting that the drive was NOT a coffee coaster. These drives take it like a Royal Marine and then some. For $99, you -could- pick up a Seagate 1.5TB on special, but remember, that sale price is there for a reason. These are well-built drives, and for the money they will last. The 32MB buffer and the 7200 RPM are the mainstays of my system, and they are the bulk of my storage systems.

I was a little unsure as to buying this raw HD from Amazon because of earlier posts I read on sloppy packaging for shipping and drives bouncing around the inside of shipping boxes. I am happy to report that my drive was boxed with molded spacers to fit the HD snugly in it's package. If it's a regional thing, I'm here in NYC on the east coast. So any shipping fears I had went unrealized. I installed the drive in my Mac Pro. Installation was a breeze. Performance of the drive, after the prerequisite formatting (which took under a minute), has been flawless. I have another one of these babies that I use with a docking station. Great price and plenty of space. For now.

I recently had two 500 gb drives(wd5000ys) die in external premium My Books, and replaced them with this 1tb internal unit. Hopefully the reliabilty will be back to WD standards that I have always experienced. Drives are always quiet and fast.THE BOX THAT AMAZON USES FOR THESE DRIVES IS FAR INFERIOR TO THE PACKAGING AND CARE I GET WHEN I ORDER A BOOK ON AMz AND WANT IT UNHARMED BY VARIOUS SHIPPING TERRORS. DRIVES COME PACKAGED IN CARDBOARD CUTOUT ARRANGEMENT THAT BASICALLY LEAVES THE DRIVE FLOPPING AROUND IN THE BOX!! WHY DO BOOKS GET BETTER CARE THAN A DELICATE COMPUTER HARD DRIVE? WORST AMz PACKAGING EVER. THEY ARE USUALLY AWESOME AT THIS STUFF.Last note, if you have any of these My Book drives crash, it is not too terribly difficult to put a new drive in the enclosure. The tricky part is getting the goofy case apart. WD is not very good at telling you how to do it, or at least I couldn't find anything at the WD site related to it. You Tube probably has some guy on video showing you how to pull them apart. I managed it. Many of the varieties of WD My Book cases come apart differently too. I had a spare 400gb and put that in the 500gb My Book Premium case, and runs great.Anything else new happens, I will update this. I took one star off for packaging.

I buy eight Hard disk for one of my HP servers. They work fine, I have installed and the servers is ni production.I recomend this hard disk and the seller. The package was very protective for the HDD.

I have read of others that have had hard drives fail and yet in many cases I still see an average or better rating for the drive. I just don't get that. In my case, this drive started giving S.M.A.R.T. errors about a week ago which Windows recovery with chkdsk /f seemed to overcome and which allowed me the opportunity to back everything up (that's a good thing) and run normally until the next time I needed to reboot. Then the system would just hang. I am now working through Western Digital for a replacement. I can't reward a product for failing within 60 days so this drive gets a one star rating.

I ordered three of these 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black drives from Amazon.com. I don't usually order computer parts from Amazon but their prices, especially combined with free shipping anywhere in the US, have made them a much more economical option than other online computer part stores.These drives arrived in one box containing three smaller boxes -- each drive was secured in the smaller box by two black plastic form fitted "guards" to immobilize the hard disk and provide cushion. I was very pleased with the packing especially considering some other reviews and pictures I've seen here on Amazon.I installed the drives in a new PC and configured them for RAID0 using the Intel Raid Controller on an ASUS P7P55D Pro motherboard. I get very fast transfer speeds with these disks compared to my old 160GB SATA drives with 16mb of cache. In Windows 7 x64 Professional using HDTach, I record a burst speed of 320MBps and an average transfer rate of 120 MBps. The most stunning part to me is that the average transfer rate stays steady across the entire platter, whereas my old hard disks would see performance drop off as the "end" of the disk was reached.I have never had heat problems with hard drives, and that holds true for these as well. I have one 120mm intake fan in front of the drive cage that pulls air over them and the temperatures seem perfectly normal, even under load.It should be noted that these drives are not intended to be used in RAID1, RAID10, or RAID5 configurations due to some deep recovery state settings that Western Digital has enabled. Your options around this are to spend the extra money for the RE (Raid Edition) drives, or dig around online and find the utility to disable the correct setting. Also, they're a little bit loud, but not obscenely louder than any other hard disk.All in all I highly recommend this drive.

I got this drive to streamline my storage space from a three hard drive setup to an 128GB SSD/2TB HDD combo. However, now that seems like it may have been a bad idea. I was hoping that this hard drive was going to last at least three to four years, if not longer. The drives this was replacing was a 500GB and 640GB. However, just within a week of using this, Windows told me it was a faulty drive, and had to be backed up and replaced/repaired. I never had this trouble with other WD HDDs, this was the first one that I've used that Windows gave me all this trouble. Hate to say it, but I may wind up trading this one in for a (cough)Seagate(cough) or a (double-cough)Hitachi(double-cough).

First off I was low on cash for this one which helped me alot to get an affordable, reliable, and excellent hard drive with great performance. I love every little thing about this hard drive except for the noise. I'm not saying hard drives are not supposed to make noises but this one is a tiny bit to loud when the hard drive is really being used such as downloading, searching, or saving. But you know what? To be honest it really doesn't bother me much, it just startles me when I'm working in a quiet environment and you suddenly hear a small scratching noise... But other than that, this hard drive is a must. Thanks Western Digital, you completely convinced me to choose you instead of seagate.

Of course, everyone, including me, has an opinion, I believe that WD Drives are the best. Good value, great reliability, and over all performance, make it one of the best drive manufacturers on the market. Caviar Black drives are good performance drives that cost fair amounts. Can't go wrong. If you're using the drive for a server or need to save money, power, or noise, go for the green drives.

I bought this drive to replace a WD 750GB 4years old. I replace drive and it was dead out of box. Bad for me was that I did not get to project for six months. I do not recommend this drive.

I bought few months ago from here.As it was my first purchase,i just selected free super saving shipping.So the next day i ran out of patience so i just went to the shipping speed page and selected one day shipping and OMG the total price now was about 110$.Then it arrived at my mail box(i live in qatar,middles east)So a week later i got it from my shipper.When i opened it i saw that there was no foam or air bags.It was just secured with the cardboards of the box.i plugged it in.Then i started to backup my old files and i got this error "Cyclic redundancy error".The hard drive was damaged internally.I did not know how to return the item to amazon and even if i could i would have to pay huge shipping fees.So i didn't return it.Now i am using it but sometimes i get that error but i can't do anything about it except to retry writing what ever i am writing to it.

Product arrived promptly and in good condition, sparely packaged as expected in OEM fashion, no instructions, etc. I'd paid for rapid shipping, since my computer was out of service until I could install the new hard drive - but as it turned out, it requires a "SATA Power connector", something I hadn't encountered before and was not expecting. It was several days before I could get to Radio Shack and pick up the appropriate power cord converter. Once I'd done that, however, all came together easily and quickly in my Linux box.I think another commenter said the drive was noisy. Mine isn't. I have a Dell box that's very quiet in the first place, and I haven't noticed any additional noise from the new hard drive.Except for the SATA power connector 'hiccup', I'm well satisfied and my computer is now running noticeably faster than it was with the hard drive that had died, requiring this replacement.

I ordered two of the 2 TB drives and am running them in a mirrored configuration. They work great but one or both of the drives is occasionally extremely loud compared to the previous 1 TB Hitachi drives I was using.

i purchased this as a slave hard drive. works great. don't like other brands because they are noisy. western digital is quieter. i always buy wd hard drives and passports. never had a problem with them.

This has been a great hard drive so far. I installed this 2TB HD in my Shuttle HTPC system that is connected to my LG flat panel. I reinstalled all of my needed software and was up and running in no time. I have noticed a significant increase in read/write speeds compared to my older model WD HD (also 7200rpm). I have only had the drive for a month or two so the longevity of the drive is still a concern, but I have not had any heat problems or strange clicking and clacking from the drive.The best feature of the drive is clearly the capacity. I filled up my 500gb drive and was looking to replace it with a more capacious drive. I found this 2TB to meet my needs and decided to splurge, and I don't regret the decision.

I've bought three over the year. I liked the idea of a terabyte drive for $99. I work with multi-gigabyte digital video/animation files, and the drive works ok with them. I don't think it can compete with a high-speed disk-array system or stuff like that, but at $99 its not supposed to. One drive didnt boot and i was able to send it back for another and it all happenned smoothly and their replacement worked fine.I bought an external wd drive a few years ago and came to dislike WD intensely as a result (a drive so shoddy that the tech support advised i plug in into the wall (!) instead of a power strip. A very poor product, but knowing i could return these drives, and seeing the ok reviews trhey got, i plunged again, and this time wd appears to have a much better product in this.

The WD Black Caviar 2TB hard-drive came nicely packaged as expected. It was easy as could be to install for having never installed or replaced a hard-drive before. For anyone who is not so computer savvy, Western Digital even provides on line instructions, tutorials, and videos to guide you through the process, should you need assistance. I literally removed the old hard-drive and plugged in the new one...and Waaa Laaa. I would highly recommend this WD Caviar Black 2TB hard-drive to anyone.

First thing first, short story: dead after just 3 weeks, now I'm requesting an RMA to replace it.Long story: I bought this drive to replace my 5 years old backup drive, I was totally happy with the performance, noise and power consumption until 2 days ago it just died, as simple as that. No warnings, just some low noise when it try to start the platters, after 4 attemps it just stops and nothing more happens. I'm an IT pro, so believe me, there was nothing else to do. Now I'm try to use the warranty. Thank God I did delete my data from my old drive.If you buy one, I hope you have a better luck than me...Bottom line: X-bit was right that the performance is great, but they did tell me this was going to happen.

Great hard drive! File transfer speed is way faster than the Blue, the drive also makes more noise than "regular" drives and runs hotter. But i knew this from the beginning so it's all good. Love this drive!

First off, all the reviews about the poor packaging are true. Amazon is really dropping the ball with how they package and ship hard drives. After reading the reviews on here prior to ordering, I opened the box amazed to find bubble wrap on top of my item. Unfortunately, I then proceeded to find absolutely nothing between my hard drive and the bottom of the box once I removed the top layer of bubble wrap.But, for the money, this is a great hard drive. Western Digital is one of the most reliable manufacturers. Lucky for me, mine did not arrive DOA due to its packaging.Bottom line, if you're looking for a great hard drive, WD Caviar Black is your best bet.

I opted for the free shipping and was pleasantly surprised that USPS delivered my package in perfect condition. Amazon double packed the drive, the first package was suspended by air bags in the second box. Great job Amazon this was best packaging for a hard drive that I've seen. I've been using the drive for over 30 days without any problems. It does seem to be faster than my previous Raid 0 setup. Defrag runs a lot faster.

Great quality, I used to trust only in seagate for HDD's, but since the late seagate mistakes for the 7200.11, and even thought I own a 7200.11 disk and still is working perfect... I decided to go with WD for a upgrade and seems like I did the right choice. My 2TB WD CB 7200rpm seems perfect. 1000% recommended.

It was a good drive while it lasted, 1 year and 4 months...Ordered 6/2009 and now it started out with terrible read/write rates. Sent out under warranty, although I bought it hoping for a little better reliability (since they offer 5 year warranty).

I will start off by stating that these are excellent hard drives, as I own several other Black Edition drives. These drives are fast, fairly quiet, and will last a long time if handled correctly. I run mine constantly with no problems. I prefer the 640 GB version using (2) platters over the higher capacity 750 GB or 1 TB model.The drive arrived to me in lightly wrapped bubble wrap with one air bag lying against one side of the drive against the packing box. It is pathetic that Amazon persists in shipping (packaging) these hard drives in such a bad manner. It is a wonder that customers don't have a 50% failure rate from Amazon's poor packaging on these drives.The first thing I did was a full format and then run a complete diagnostics test to determine if the hard drive was damaged or not. Fortunately the hard drive passed all of the diagnostic read-write tests and appears to be ok. Only time will tell if it is going to be reliable. Bottom line is that the drive is excellent - the shipping and packaging are horrible. I will not order any more hard drives from Amazon, but I would not hesitate to buy this hard drive from a different seller or vendor. I give the drive 5 stars, but I have to deduct 1 star for the lousy condition it was shipped in. For those of you contemplating on buying this drive from Amazon, be forewarned it might be a crapshoot if yours gets delivered damaged.

First, like other have mentioned, Amazon could have done a little better for packaging on these. I'm Prime (which I love!) and was slightly dissapointed. It was a medium size box with 3 air bags, 1 of which was deflated. There was then an inner box, which looks like the standard OEM box.This comes with no rails, no SATA and no screws. I knew this going in and have plenty, but just be warned!Loaded Windows 7 in no time and give me a 5.9 on the Win 7 Experience for HD transfer (not sure if this is lowered by my 1.5tb WD Green general storage drive)

I just got this drive and did a fresh install with Windows XP Pro. I was hoping to see a performance increase since I was replacing a 250 gig drive... But I have to say that I haven't noticed much of an increase...The drive runs well so far and I expect it to run well for a very long time. It's a fine drive at a fine price: quiet, fast, etc. I have mine running in an Ubuntu server build, and no special configuration or screwing around was necessary: just install, partition, and go.However, my first one started failing in less than a month, spewing I/O errors left and right. The good news is that Western Digital's RMA process is pretty painless, and my replacement drive showed up in just a few days. Hopefully, it will last longer.Still, it's hard to argue with that 5 year limited warranty. Clearly, WD expects these to last longer than a few weeks, so I must have just gotten a bad sample. But, I'm knocking it down a star because I can't ignore the fact that I just installed this drive a few weeks ago and already I need to replace it.

I just replaced my boot drive with this drive. The outcome was a flawless. This drive is quiet and fast. I measured its read speed at 90 MB/sec, 70% faster than the drive it replaced. As a bonus, I was able to transfer data from a online another drive to this drive, and take that old drive offline to save power. I am completely satisfied with this upgrade.

A very good drive (I bought it from [...]) and an excelent value for the money. I added it to my DELL XPS410 because I was running out of space. Since I have an aftermarket Power & Cooling PSU, I had plenty of extra power connections. What I didn't keep in mind, unfortunately, was that this is an OEM drive, meaning it doesn't come with anything (like a SATA cable). I bought the SATA cable separately and was on my way... (After installing, for all you newbies out there, if you can't see the drive, it usually means you have to enable that particular SATA location in BIOS menu.)I must also mention that my DELL had nice L-shaped SATA connectors that didn't stick out too far (since my drives are located perpendicular to the tower that is an issue) but the one I bought is a I-shaped connector taking up more space (not a problem for me, since one of my tower panels are permanently off.)PACKAGING: I've read a bunch of bad reviews that Amazon has bad packaging of this particular product. Other products from Amazon I recieved had similar packaging: a big bubble on one side of a product. For books and yo-yo's that may be alright, for electronics that is obviously too little protection. My drive (from [...]) arrived taped several times around in bubble-wrap (the small veriety) so that when I made a mistake of dropping it at the beginning, it just bounced up like a basketball and amazingly IT STILL WORKS FINE (it's been more than 6 months)!For the price IMO this drive cannot be beat! You will do good to buy it.

The basics: Fastest drive I own, biggest drive I own. Easy install. Low noise.The details: With 750GB drives you end up with about 697 usable space due to a megabyte is 1024k not 1000k. so there is the reason why no HD gives you what is stated on the box. The ratio is .93, go figure. This drive is quiet, very low noise when compared to a couple seagates I have. The 32mb buffer is huge, I haven't pushed it yet but is nice to know it is there. I can't say how long it will last but it has a good warranty period. Which I want to insert a note, Back up your important data on writable disk, regularly. Pictures and documents. And encrypt the stuff you don't want to share. It is not a question of if a hard drive will fail, It is when! No matter the Mfg. Copy those pictures you can not get back...do it today.I like this drive and would recommend it to anyone, I would buy another. Mine was packed very securely although most new non-running drives can withstand over 300 Gs.

The 1TB WD Caviar Black hard drive is an excellent piece of computer equipment. If you're looking for the three S's - speed, storage, and silence - then look no further. Although, granted, it isn't quite "silent." More like "near-silent."I have two of these drives installed in two completely different systems. The first one acts as a storage drive for my custom built Windows PC. I have read and written thousands upon thousands of files, ranging from music to movies to games, on this drive and it has handled it all without a hiccup. The performance is speedy (about 20-25% faster than my previous 250GB WD storage drive, confirmed with benchmarks) and the drive itself has been quite reliable thus far. Unless you're storing an entire video library on this thing, chances are pretty good that you will not run out of space anytime soon.My second WD Caviar Black drive is acting as the system disk in my 20" aluminum iMac (late-2008 model). First off, I highly recommend that anyone who wishes to consider installing their own hard drive upgrade in one of the new iMac's either have a background in electronics and computer hardware, or find someone who can do it for you. That being said, I pulled out the old stock 320GB Seagate drive and replaced it with this WD model. I've noticed that the drive is slightly louder than the Seagate, but only when I'm operating in a silent environment. If you are apt to play music, have fans running, or work in a noisy office environment, you probably won't even notice the difference, unless you have superhuman bionic hearing or something of that nature. The speed appears to be noticeably faster than the old Seagate drive, although I have not run benchmarks to confirm my observations. Programs seem to open with greater speed and the boot time has been reduced as well.I should probably clarify that the greater speed I'm experiencing isn't Earth-shattering. I'm talking about only a few seconds. Either way, this drive performs admirably as a boot disk for the iMac.Overall, I would highly recommend this drive to anyone looking to upgrade their Windows or Apple desktop computers. I've been a steadfast customer of Western Digital drives for several years now and with good reason: I haven't had one fail me yet.

I needed to replace the 640 GB Western Digital Caviar Blue drive that originally came in my pc with something larger, so off I went looking for the ideal replacement. After browsing hard drive review sites I decided that it should definitely be another WD drive because of their reliability, quality, and performance, but which version should I go for? Green drives could be bought at 1.5 TB for around $125 when I was shopping around, compared to this 1 TB Black drive that was around $90 (and there was no Black 1.5 TB drive).I wondered if the speed difference between the Green and Black would be worth going with the smaller capacity. The answer is HECK YES!! This Black drive was SO worth switching to, it's not even funny. After mirroring my Blue drive contents to my new Black drive and installing it, my pc was noticeably much faster. If I saw this much difference between a Blue and Black drive I can't imagine how disappointed I would have been if I had used a Green drive as my primary drive. I'm sure they're great for data vaults but not worth it for the OS and programs. I HIGHLY recommend Black drives for use as primary drives!

I have gotten two of these drives so far. I did not get them at the same time. One was for a new computer build back in january of 2009. Another one was bought in july of 2009. The other drive was for a security system DVR. So far i have not seen any problems with these drives. I am not really sure what happened with other people and failing drives. Also these drives are not as loud as people are saying they are. They probaly installed incorrectly and are loose shaking around in the computer case. Mine are installed in a coolermaster haf932 case. The packaging that both drives came in were in great condition with a box inside of a box. The hard drive came in a smaller box filled with foam padding that let little to no rattling around while in shipment. So people that got drives with poor packaging. Also, not really sure what they are talking about either. My drives were bought with a pretty big space between them and both came the same exact way in which they should ship drives. Maybe it is caused by which warehouse they are coming out of. Not sure. I would like to know what western digital says about the warranty for these drives tho since they are OEM. If i ever have a problem within 5 years and western digital says contact the OEM dealer. I am coming right back to amazon.com and they better replace a bad drive. Other than that, these drives are great. I am thinking on getting another one because my other one is filling up quick with back-up's of windows vista ultimate edition 64 bit.

A hard drive of this caliber for $100 was well worth it for me. Your getting a 7200 rpm, 32mb cache, 1TB (the one that I got), and it's SATA 2. Well worth the price tag indeed. This IS the bulk version, so it means it just comes with the hard drive, plastic covering, and plastic side cases to hold it into place in the shipping box. I was sort of disappointed with the light packaging. I seriously thought something like this would have more protection, but the hard drive worked fine. If you guys, don't know how to install an internal hard drive into your comp, then you might want to do your homework by googling this up, or read some of the other reviews. Depending on your computer you might or might now hear the hard drive loading. I have it connected in a hard drive dock that sits on top of my computer, and I can hear it when ever I access data off of it after a while. It's not super load or anything, and probably your internal cooling fans would probably mask it. Another product that I would recommend people getting. I probably would be getting the 2TB version sometime later, so I can put more of my digital media on.

The quality of this drive is already well documented so I can't add much there. I had to initialize and format it over a USB port in order for Vista to recognize it on the eSATA port, but that's a Vista issue, and could be there was an easier way to go about it that I just didn't know.I did want to add some comments on the packaging. I was expecting to get something similar to the photos and descriptions others have left, but what I got was a little worse, a little better. I ordered mine through Tiger Direct (via Amazon) and received it in an oversized box, loose, simply wrapped in a single sheet of craft paper. No styrofoam, no bubble wrap, no anchoring blocks. Just a piece of paper.In fairness, though, the unit was not just loose in a static-bag as some of the reviewers' photos show -- mine came in one of those hard plastic clamshell covers that you can only open with like a razor knife or poultry scissors. On the top and bottom the case did have kind of a double walled conctruction, ostensibly to provide shock protection. I don't know how much, if any, additional protection this really provided vs the bag-only shipments people have gotten from other sources. The drive was functioning and shows no errors, but it does have me wondering if it was compromised in any way. My recommendation would be to either spend the nominal extra $ to order a retail unit and consider it a packaging, insurance, and peace of mind fee.
