This drive failed after 1 year and 7 months of light duty in a Drobo. I notice that the code "WD1001FALS" includes an abbreviation for Fails so I guess I was forewarned. No more spending extra for the Black for me.

Great drive! Fast! Quiet! Just plug & go! Incredible noticeable performance difference compared to original Dell stock drive.I have over several hundred thousand personal files on my computer--over and above Windows, installed software, installation backups. I have 150+ GB mp3 files, pictures, etc. One thing I want to avoid at all costs is losing a hard drive. I researched & found this to be the best on the market when I bought it. I was so pleased I bought another, then another, then.... With few exceptions, I believe Amazon has the best prices for these.Using two drives, I have a backup strategy using Acronis True Image Home 2009 and Microsoft SyncToy 2.1 in which I periodically clone one WD 1TB drive to another. I then keep them in sync using SyncToy. The time & effort is negligible. They are easily scheduled. Cloning takes only about 45 minutes, if that. I like this better than a RAID setup. The configuration is simpler and a failure will be easier to recover from--just change the SATA cable. Besides, RAID in no way prevents the spread of viruses, spyware or malware across several drives. It duplicates everything! These drives were a great choice!UPDATE: So far I have bought and installed seven of these for myself and others: 5 1TB, 1 750 GB, and 1 640 GB.Also, I bought two drives from other vendors, thinking I was getting a bargain. They arrived DOA. I personally think Amazon's packing & shipping makes a difference. They were always packed well-protected.

My switch from Seagate to Western Digital started with a WD MyBookWorld network drive that has now been running well on 5 years. Then we needed a larger disk in my son's MacBook laptop and went with a 7200rpm 320Gb WD Caviar Black. Then I needed SATA disks for my first home-built Windows-7 PC, and I read more about the reliability of WD Caviar Black and their 5-year warranty. I looked in my box of old computer parts and noticed a few dead Seagate drives, and only one dead WD drive. No matter what, you still take your chance with disk drives, but my luck with WD has been better than Seagate. So, I went with WD Caviar Black 320Gb and 1Tb drives. Then my son needed more SATA disks for a Mac Pro and his video production classes. The pricing of the 1Tb drives has been very good, so now they are being used all over the house as primaries and backups. A couple external enclosures later, and I have more 1TB drives in eSATA and Firewire enclosures, and a couple 2Tb drives replacing internal 1TB drives. (two MyBookWorld, two 320Gb, eight 1TB and two 2TB's.) I never imagined storing this much data, but a family full of music and videos and eBooks takes a lot of space and requires a lot of backup. And since speed is important, 7200rpm SATA drives are great for eSATA and Firewire. So far, so good (knock on wood). I have not needed to test WD's warranty or return policies on any of these drives.

There's not really much you can say bad about this HDD. No, it's not 2TB and it certainly isn't the best on the market, especially from Western Digital. However when you look at what you get for the price, it's really hard to pass up this drive. I've waited a month before writing a review in case I had to include anything like having to return it or anything like that. Suffice to say, it runs great and I've had zero problems with the drive so far. I've already filled it up more than half capacity at this point. It is pretty quiet too, even when performing intensive writing or reading.I've personally never owned anything but Western Digital drives, and I imagine I'll have this drive for a long time as well. There's a simple reason: reliability. Only one WD drive I've owned has ever stopped working, and it was almost 10 years old when it quit on me. You definitely get your money's worth when you go with a Western Digital drive.

I know a lot of people are having this same problem. When ordering this product through Amazon, you end up receiving the 1TB 32mb cache version instead (which is obviously $99 versus the $264 I paid for it).Like many others, I submitted the online exchange and the second delivery was another 1TB drive.I call Amazon and they guy assures me that they are looking into the issue, and that they will resolve it and send me the correct product overnight. I call back today and get a CSR that tells me I need to return the 2 drives I received and I will get a refund, but they will not be filling my order. Not only that, but I can still buy the product from one of the other vendors through Amazon's open Market.I'm an Amazon Prime Member which of course carries an annual fee, and does NOT apply to Amazon's open market. So I'm supposed to go out of my way and drop off the 2 drives I received in error to UPS so that I can get my refund of $264, then pay $294 plus tax and shipping through Amazon's open market just because they can't fullfill my order.Any other company in the world would be responsible for filling this order. I know this because I myself have lost money many times when the manufacturers I use to are back ordered or send the wrong product. It comes out of my pocket and I deal with the manufactuer myself, but MY CUSTOMER gets what they ordered always. In my opionion Amazon (I write this thinking you actually read this but well all know you don't, you don't care) you should be responsible for filling my order regardless of the loss you receive. You should be buying up stock from your open market through various other vendors and filling the orders placed THROUGH YOU from YOUR CUSTOMERS.This isn't the first time Amazon has done this to me, but it will be the last. I have cancelled my Prime Membership and will no longer be buying anything through Amazon ever again. There are plenty of other viable options out there that actually care about their customers.

Western Digital 640 GB Caviar Black SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD6401AALSI bought this basic as a replacement for my 250 GB Western Digital. I know, you might be thinking chasing the bad with the bad. Hard drives fail and I have had 4 head crashes in 4 different computers and PCs in the last 11 years. Installation was simple because it fit. I used my replacement software with utility to partition the disc and then installed everything that I lost. Fortunately I have backup externals and didn't lose much. I selected double the hard drive cache than I previously was running and the performance is noticeable. Also noticeable is I can't hear the drive running as it is very quiet. That's a plus for me.

I buy Western Digital drives because they have been very reliable for me--I've had dozens over the years. I did have one finally go bad after seven years of daily use.The packaging the drive came in was very good. Lots of Styrofoam and bubble wrap.THIS DRIVE IS FAST! This Black drive has a huge increase in speed over the WD Blue drive it replaces. Visual Studio 2010 launches 72% faster and Expression Blend 4 launches 46% faster. The increase in cost over the blue drive was minimal ~$30 and this one comes with a five year warranty. Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB hard drive--the best I have ever used--a solid performer.

I have been waiting ages for a large capacity hard drive that runs at 7,200rpm and this Caviar black has most definitely answered my call.Lets look at the technical specs first... As Borat would say, They're very nice! (bet you didn't expect a lame Borat reference did you?)It features: Two Processors, Four 500GB platters, 64MB of cache and a dual mode actuator system that, (to make a long story short) enables precision head tracking that speeds up your seek times. Plus like most Western Digital hard drives, this one features a No-Touch loader, meaning the read and write head never comes in contact with any of the platters, increasing the life span of the hard drive. Now to benchmarks. (all testing performed on an Intel 2.4Ghz Q6600 paired with XFX 780i Sli Mobo and recorded in HDTach)First off, this thing has the fastest sustained writes and reads of any standard magnetic drive I've used. (or heard of for that matter) Mine exceeded 113MB/s each compared to my previous 1.5TB Barracuda that scored 99MB/s sustained reads and 84MB/s sustained writes. That gives the Caviar Black about 16 and 30 percent faster sustained reads and writes respectively!Random Access Reads and Writes were also faster for the Caviar Black at 7.4ms and 5ms respectively. Compared to the Barracuda's 12.9 and 5.4.Burst Read speeds for the Caviar Black were 215.1MB/s compared to the Barracuda's 209.1MB/sAlso, just for fun I compared the Caviar Black's benchmarks against my 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor. (Thinking the VelociRaptor would totally own it) I was pretty shocked at the results.Raptor sustained read/write: 99.1MB/s and 98.2MB/sCaviar sustained read/write: 113.3MB/s and 113.1MB/s (It actually beat it)Raptor random access read/write: 7.3ms and 3.3msCaviar random access read/write: 7.5ms and 4.9ms (Pretty close here)Raptor Burst read: 250.3MB/sCaviar Burst read: 215.1MB/s (O well, can't win em all ;)Not bad considering this thing is running about 27 percent slower than the Raptor. :DBottom line is, the Caviar Black 2TB is a hard drive running nearly as fast (or faster) than a VelociRaptor for about only a hundred bucks more and its six and a half times the capacity. Is it worth it to you? I think it is, the price will only drop in time to come but with this size and these speeds even at the $299msrp I don't think the Caviar Black 2TB's value can be beat at the moment.

I was on a budget and didn't want to spend a lot of money on a 1 TB hard drive. The hard drive I purchased from this company for about 50 bucks arrived in just a couple of days from the east coast. Even though it's an internal drive, I had purchased a usb adapter for 10 bucks elsewhere and wanted to use this drive as an external. The usb adapter hooked up easily and when I plugged the drive into the computer, it was recognized but since it was not formatted, it was not quite ready to use. I had to do some homework on the formatting since I hadn't formatted a hard drive in a couple of years and my repertoire of skills have evolved since the last time I did it (Fdisk the last time and Gparted [highly recommended] this time). Using Gparted, I partitioned and formatted the drive. I have a laptop and a desktop computer that are both dual boot Mandriva Linux and Windows XP. I created 4 partitions (one for each operating system) then proceeded to back up each one. Everything worked fine. I now need to decide where to store the drive until the next backup. I'm thinking of a fireproof safe or something. End of story. I didn't need customer service or anything like that but the product was as they represented it and I have no complaints whatsoever.

Nothing technical to add beyond the other excellent reviews here. The drive I received is running perfectly as the User drive in my SSD-booted Mac Pro.Main reason for adding yet another review is to comment on the packaging, since there are many reviews and photos here of badly packaged drives. This drive, as well as a pair of Caviar Greens in a separate shipment, was well packaged, primarily by Western Digital themselves. Apparently enough complaints about OEM drive packaging (and returns) have got them packing the drives the same as retail drives, other than in generic brown boxes. Each drive was in its own heavy cardboard box with plastic holders isolating it from all sides of the box. These boxes were in turn put inside an Amazon box with ample air packs.

This drive was highly recommended as the fastest drive available before going up to the 10krpm Velociraptor series, and after putting both in my system, I believe the claims are true. This drive runs quietly, where I can't even hear drive accesses like I can with other drives. That's one of the most noticeable differences between this and the Velociraptor, aside from the speed, of course. So, what is the speed difference between this Caviar Black drive and the Velociraptor? I ran HD Tune 2.55 to find out.The test system was a brand new Core i7-920 based system using an ASUS P6T-Deluxe motherboard with on-board SATA. The 300GB Velociraptor is installed as the system drive, the 640GB Caviar Black as the data drive.Caviar Black 640GB:50 MB/s min, 109.4 MB/s max, 85.8 MB/s averageAccess Time: 12.3msBurst Rate: 127 MB/sVelociraptor 300GB:74.6 MB/s min, 120 MB/s max, 100.9 MB/s averageAccess Time: 8.6msBurst Rate: 188.3 MB/sWhile the max rates are very close, you'll notice that the min rates are quite different, and the burst rate is even more so.To put these tests into perspective, I also ran HD Tune on my previous system, which is a Pentium 4 3.06GHz Windows XP box with an 80GB Seagate IDE system drive and a 500GB Seagate ST3500641AS SATA drive for data.I won't even post the 80GB's numbers because they are too pathetic and the technology it's based on is outdated, but I think a comparison to the SATA drive is apt because many people might have such a drive and may be contemplating the value of a replacement/upgrade.Seagate 7200.9 500GB:30.2 MB/s min, 61.3 MB/s max, 48.8 MB/s averageAccess Time: 14msBurst Rate: 97.3 MB/sAs you can see, the new Caviar Black drive outpaces the older Seagate by a wide margin. An almost 76% increase in average speed, coupled with 14% better access times, makes for an upgrade that is going to be noticeable in disk-instensive operations, provided the rest of the system is not a bottleneck.Bottlenecks are exactly what I didn't want in my new system. The Velociraptor came highly recommended by a local system builder that I trust, as he said that with the new systems he was building, the hard drive was fast becoming the bottleneck. Based on these tests and my usage of the new machine, I have every confidence that he was correct.I decided to go with the Velociraptor for my system drive because I wanted the fastest drive possible, especially for quick accesses. While I could have gone with a second Velociraptor for the data drive, I wanted more storage space and lower cost. While breaking in my system, I used both HD Tune's error scan function and Windows 7's thorough chkdsk routines several times. These tests took several hours to run, and I ran them directly after installation, and then after transferring about 300GB of data to the drive. No problems have been found in any of those tests.I hoped that the Caviar Black was the bang-for-the-buck alternative, and I believe that was a wise choice. The Caviar Black 640GB drive represents a great value and delivers terrific performance.

Alright - took a chance and ordered the 1TB drive. WD has a long history of making some of the better HDDs in the industry. This review will attempt to address some of the negative issues presenting by other reviewers. First - packaging: upon opening the box, the drive was in another box which was surrounded externally by three units of air bags (strips of three); the drive itself was "suspended" within the second box by the plastic end caps that basically "suspend" the drive from any contact. The source of the shipping facility was from Lexington, KY.Next, unpacked the drive and formatted to 931GB; ran Hard Disk Sentinel for a surface scan overnight and no damaged or bad sectors noted. Copied a couple large files to and from the drive with barely any noticeable increase in dB output (the drive I received is relatively a quiet drive compared to the others currently in the system; two other WDs and one Seagate). Actually - the loudest component in the case is the fan cooling the graphics card - this is an older Radeon AGP model.I am basically confident the drive will last; notwithstanding the possibility of some latent issue that may pop up within the next couple months. This is a great price for the capacity (1TB = functionally 9.5 cents/GB).Interesting - the drive just increased in price by almost $10 since I reviewed it . . . now July 22nd.

Excellent drive - the generous 64MB cache in addition to the 72K rpm and SATA connection makes this a perfect drive for my media server setup. I bought this 2TB drive as my 4th drive for all the ripped blu-ray movies I have (no compression - full quality blurays). I watch it on my 46" Sony TV via my laptop's HDMI output. I have an external dual drive bay (Thermaltake blacx duet - http://www.amazon.com/eSATA-SATA-External-3-5in-Drive/dp/B001IOPIRM) that I use with this drive. The eSATA connection to my laptop provides ample bandwidth I need to watch a mounted bluray image file's movie without a single hiccup. And the generous cache has just been the icing on the cake.Kudos to WD for the great packaging contrary to what some people grmbled about - the packaging was above and beyond what I'd expect for an OEM drive (most people don't seem to know the diff. between an OEM and retail drive and expect same packaging...however the packaging for this drive was of same quality as that of a retail drive). And kudos to Amazon for have packaged that WD box well inside their own box wrapped with bubble-pak...had only expected Amazon's packaging and not WD's own box and strong plastic drive holders inside the box.I am hoping Amazon will maintain this price on this drive till I get my next one in a few months.

I ponied up for the more expensive drive in WD's line thinking it would be money well spent, and I'm not convinced it was worth it. My Mac Pro has seemed very slow and buggy ever since installing this drive (one of three drives I have installed). The drive actually crashed a week after installing it. A reformat fixed it, but I had to reinstall everything which set me back a decent amount of time. I have it dedicated as a drive just for photos, no applications or OS. It takes a noticeable amount of time to wake up and read what I'm looking for.I have had one weird thing after another pop up since I installed this drive. I'm close to sending it back to get something else, even if it costs me more.

The drive in question, Western Digital WD1001FALS Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALS, is the Caviar Black, 3 Gb/s unit.I installed it in an elderly XP system with SATA-1 (1.5 Gb/s) only ports and had absolutely no problem with the system recognizing, formatting, or utilizing the drive. For this installation, the 'force SATA-1' jumper was not needed on the drive (jumper information for this drive can be found on the WD website). No heat issues have been noticed, but the computer case involved does have five fans (independent of the power supply) and thus has a good cooling air supply. The new drive also seems not to have added noticeable noise.Formatting did take quite a long time as expected. In use, the drive performs well - certainly at or above the level of other drives in the system. It is too soon to discuss longevity since the drive has only been installed for about two weeks at this point. However, I have had good success with WD drives in the past.Packaging from Amazon was adequate. I would like to see a bit more padding, though.

Was apprehensive about this purchase due to other reviewers' negative comments on packaging. I purchased 2 drives in the same transaction early Sept 2010. Arrived as 1 box with typical airbags inside to prevent shifting. Within this box were 2 smaller boxes. Each smaller box contained an individual drive suspended with end caps that isolate all drive surfaces from the box and provide some shock protection. This was as good or better packaging than I have seen from most other shippers. If I had ordered only one drive and it came in one of the smaller boxes with end caps, without the other box with air bag, I think this still would've been perfectly adequate.Packaging aside - I've had some serious performance issues with WD Green drives on the Mac - perhaps due to frequent spin-up / spin-down cycles - resulting in frequent waits of 5 sec or more while the drive spins up. So far the Black drives seem to work just fine. Nice and quiet too.Seems like Amazon mixes reviews for diff models so to clarify this review is for WD2001FASS (2TB Caviar Black 64MB buffer) drives that were on sale early Sept 2010 for $140 ea.

When building or upgrading computer, I have always used Western Digital drives. They make great reliable drives, have great customer support, and a pretty good warranty on all their drives.I bought this drive for a new personal database server I was building. It was suppose to run along side another Western Digital drive (OS drive). Once the system was built and the drives were installed, both had worked flawlessly. The dual processors on the hard drive does in fact make data transfers move slightly more quickly. So far, the various SMART programs and hardware management utilities the server is running reports that both WD drives are in healthy condition. To date, I've moved about a few terabytes of data to and from the drives with no problems.

The WD Black Edition drives are known for their dependability and performance. This drive has a limited 5 year warranty (the blue and green versions have 3 year warranty). It has two processors, 32MB of cache, and the motor shaft is secured on both ends rather than just one end. It is a well-rated drive at the Egg store. I have this drive in a firewire enclosure and have Time Machine backups on it.The packaging was good and bad. The drive was packed in a small box with plastic supports on the ends of the drive which made the drive very secure in this box. The problem was this box was in a larger box with no packaging at all around the smaller box which contained the drive. There was space enough for the smaller box containing the drive to move about during shipping. It was shipped by USPS but the drive was delivered by FedEx to my city, and then turned over to USPS for delivery. The delivery was prompt.

This is for people (like me) who've never done this before... I use Windows Vista and an HP desktop computer.1. Ordered this drive, which arrived promptly. Drive was well packed with foam. As expected, it didn't come with anything else. It works fine, and to me it doesn't seem noisy.2. Ordered Tripp Lite P940-19I Serial ATA (SATA) Signal Cable (19 Inches). Note: older computers won't support SATA. If you have a newer computer, it should work. SATA cables are red and about 1 cm wide, the older cables are about an inch wide and silvery. If your hard drive uses these, don't get this drive.3. Ordered Tripp Lite P946-12I Serial ATA (SATA) Dual Power Adapter Cable - 4pin/2x15pin SATA - 12in. This is a "Y" adapter (optimistically planning for my next hard drive!), but a straight one would also work. I found out after it arrived I already had a SATA power adapter in my case. However, it wouldn't have reached with the available wiring length, so I still ended up using this.4. In my case, the drive requires 4 screws to install it. These are short screws with large flat heads, the heads form a sort of "rail" for it to glide into the rack on. On opening my case, I realized that HP had thoughtfully provided extra screws for future upgrades! The drive does not come with screws.5. Installed drive in rack, plugged in the two cables, no problem.6. Get to Windows. Your new hardware icon should say "locating... installing" or something like that.7. Go to Start-Computer (right click on Computer) - Manage - then to Disk Management. Find your new drive at the bottom of the screen, and click over the "drive 1" (or whatever) designation to make it "online". Then right click the long color band over the drive's partition graphic and start the "new simple volume" wizard. Stayed with the defaults. That's about it, everything worked the first time. After the drive was up and running, I decided to error-check the drive from Windows Explorer (under the tools tab for drive). This gave the unexpected result of giving me a blank screen for several hours while it checked it. When I've error-checked drive c:\, my screen gives me information on what it's doing. This was just totally blank, which was disconcerting, but in a few hours it finished what it was doing and everything worked.I also went into the BIOS on bootup (pressed F10 while booting, don't know if this is the same on other PC's) to see if I needed to do anything there, but I didn't. The new drive was already listed. I did get a new option on booting, to set up the drive in a RAID configuration, I left this alone. (non-RAID)This is written to help first-timers like me. If any experienced computer folks want to comment and add pearls of wisdom feel free!Update: July 26, 2012Three plus years later, lots of usage, working fine, no problems.

I had built a new PC about 8 month's ago and I had this drive as a storage drive along side of a 1TD drive by Western Digital. I have thousands of digital photos and web sites that I need room to get them backed up on. From reading all the reviews from around the web this drive could just as well be used as a main drive and be partitioned into several smaller partitions with ease. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate X64. I purchased this one because my first one gave up way to fast on me but was still under warranty but I needed to get my system up and running quickly. The RMA process has taken some time but at least I'm getting it replaced. Some may wonder why would you get the same drive that just died on you, well it's easy to say they make lousy drives but I've used Western Digital drives for as long as I can remember without having any problems what so ever with them. The only reason I didn't give this drive a perfect rating is because it did give up and when it comes to portability it wasn't meant to be portable though I'm sure you could make it so. All in all it's a great drive and even fairly inexpensive considering the capacity is at or near the top end when it comes to internal hard-drives.The only faster drives out there are the newer solid state drives or SSD drives if you prefer but they don't have the capacity yet and their cost is still pretty high per megabyte.

Enough of the other reviewers have provided information about ease of use, what comes in the box, how to set them up, and debated the various merits of Western Digitals reliability and customer service that I feel no need to restate my own thoughts and opinions on those matters.I purchased these drives to increase the storage space in my home office media server (Dell PowerEdge, 3.0Ghz HT, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, PCI/e SATA II RAID controller). Before selecting a final RAID configuration I did extensive testing of these drives to determine read performance (write isn't that much of an issue when streaming video and music to various locations) and here are the results of those tests. The "control" group was the PowerEdge's two 360GB WD green drives configured in RAID 1 (disk mirroring) (the OS drive is a pair of EIDE 10GB drives in RAID 1). These results are the average of four passes with HD Tune.Control:RAID/Space/Max Read (MB/s)/AVG Read (MB/s)/CPU1 / 360GB / 99.6 / 76 / 2.1%1TB WD Black drivesRAID/Space/Max Read (MB/s)/AVG Read (MB/s)/CPU0 / 4 TB / 205.3 /168.8 / 6.1%1 / 2 TB / 108.6 / 86.3 / 2.9%0-1 / 2 TB / 207.3 /168.6 / 6.5%5 / 3 TB / 233.0 / 205.9 / 8.6%Comparing "apples to apples" in a RAID 1 configuration the 1TB WD Black drives are noticeably faster than the smaller Green drives. I was rather surprised that the RAID 5 configuration scored so much faster than the RAID 0-1 configuration and in the end I went with the RAID5 configuration as it gave me the best "bang for the buck" (reliability, speed, and available space).Prior to implementing RAID5 with these drives on the server the average transfer rate from the WD Green drives to my laptop via 802.11g router was 1.8MB/s (this was tested using large audio and media files). With that same router I am now seeing 4.6MB/s (roughly 42Mbs), which is near enough to the theoretical limit of 54Mbs on the router that I suspect the reason it isn't faster are due to limitations of the router. Doing hardwired tests (plugging the laptop into the 100Mbs ports on the router via a network cable) would seem to confirm this as the transfer rate improved from 1.9MB/s to 10.3MB/s.

I had recently purchased the 500GB green WD Caviar and was not impressed. first off the model number on the box did not match the model number on the drive (i read that this was due to WD including extra space...i.e. one person said they got a 640 with a note in box saying basically surprise you get a bonus) so i thought this was the reason for the discrepancy. it was not and then i went on to read that the drive is not actually variable speed (supposed to be 5400-7200rpm) and that it was fixed at 5400...my test reported 5000 and it was running 5 degree's C hotter than the 750gig drive i have as a backup.the 640gig black version was much better, i went with the free "prime" trial and shipping was hard to believe just over 36 hours from order to in hand. the packaging was poor in my opinion, bubble wrapped the drive ok but the "air pillows" that took up the extra space in the box were busted or half inflated. there was enough room in the box for 2 more drives so it probably got bounced around pretty bad.the drive itself is great..in and hour and 20 minutes i not only ran around the house doing house work but i manged to install windows 7 and most drivers. it still only scores a 5.9 on the windows performance rating, as did the green, but the green's "head parking" caused delays that made program not start then generate an error.you would double click on a program and you could hear the drive click out of the park position after a second then half the time get an error that X failed to run because Y was delayed.so far this drive is solid and well has 4 times the buffer than the green. would recommend over the green versions by far.

First off, I'm your slightly above average computer user. I can build my own computer, but I don't claim to know everything and other techno mumbo jumbo. I usually have to go read on online forums to help me through with some more advanced computer stuff. That said, my WD 250gb drive died on me this past month. It was starting to give me errors and using a program called "Speed Fan", it read the "SMART" data on my hdd and indicated that there were errors in the hdd. It was time to replace!I chose WD because of experience with their green drives. I have 3 green drives (2x750gb 1x1tb) for the past 2 years and they run 24/7 downloading torrents, streaming media to xbox, storing nearly a million pictures, mp3s, etc etc. ZERO problems and the green drives run at an average of about 30 degrees! That's without the fancy cooling that some guys have. I just use a regular [...] Antec case. That beings said, the 250gb WD (non green drive) that died ran at about 42 degrees.I installed this 1tb WD black without a hitch. I chose the 1TB not because i needed the extra storage but the cost over lower capacity drives was minimal that i said "why not." It has dual processor with 32mb cache, and a bunch of other stuff. Also, some online forum people were saying that in the WD black series, the 640gb and 1tb are the fastest compared to the other speeds. This is because of the higher platter density (334?) compared to the other sizes in the series. But does the drive actually perform faster? YES, actually it does. I usually don't notice a speed increase with an upgraded drive but this time I noticed it. It's not HUGE, but noticeable. Firefox and my mail programs are launching just a few seconds faster. HD videos seem to start up faster with less lag. This drive runs about 35-36 degrees in my case, vs the 30 degrees of the green drive. So it does a run a little hotter, but not as hot as my old 250gb.I would recommend this product.I hope this review was helpful to you.PS:The packaging from Amazon really wasn't that great. The guy who posted up how the drive was packaged... via 2 sheets of bubble wrap, that's EXACTLY how my hdd came. I'm not sure if I would order a hdd from Amazon again.

I am not one to write bad reviews, but for the $170+ Price Tag this Drive lacks elegance and silence. I have never heard such a loud hard drive. The Bottome Line, Getting another Samsung Spinpoint 1TB HD (HD103UJ)since the other I have has never been this loud and has worked for MANY years.I read from other reviews that this drive fails after a few weeks and it does not support basic RAID features, also the Warranty is sketchy at best. This is the last Western Digital Product I EVER buy. Buying something like this is supposed to be a lot less worrisome, and even though it says that Amazon.com filled my order I don't know why a 3rd Party name keeps showing up in the item's shipped and sold by description but in the item's sold buy screen in searches it shows up as Amazon.I buy from Amazon a lot and this is by far the worst experience overall, so frustrated that I went out of my way to write this review!

My WD Caviar 1TB hard drive arrive exactly when Amazon said it would arrive. Packaging was very good - The hard drive was in a sealed ESD-protection bag, suspended by plastic packaging in a sturdy box. That box was in a shipping box, with an air-pillow filling the gap, so the inner box didn't shift around. I used the free Super-Saver shipping & the USPS delivered the package in perfect condition.OEM hard drives come without any mounting hardware, so I used my own screws and rubber grommets to mount it. It's a little quieter and considerably faster than the WD 400GB 5400 RPM drive that it replaced. Overall, I'm very pleased with it.

When I need a large 2TB drive, this is one of my top choices. Performance is good, and I've never had a failure. The data you put on a drive is FAR more valuable than the cost of a drive, so why buy cheap drives? I always buy higher end drives not only for their improved performance, but really, for their improved reliability.Recently Seagate began to offer a competitive 2TB unit, I've purchased both models and so far can't say one is better than the other. Thus, buy from the manufacturer you trust most. In the past I only purchased Seagate, but they didn't have a unit to compete with this one, so I purchased a number of these and I've been impressed.I'll continue to buy both Seagate and Western Digital while they continue to perform quickly and reliably for me.

I needed a large capacity SADA drive for my main work computer. This drive is OEM so it did not come with cable but I already had a spare and they are pretty cheap anyway. This drive is SATA II and has a max transfer rate higher than my old SATA I capable motherboard. However, it seem to auto detect my motherboard max transfer rate and so is backwards compatible. Even with this being the case, I still went back into the computer and shorted the SATA II drive pins 5-6 which locks it into the SATA I speed of 150 MB/s. 'Better safe than sorry I always say.

I have an HP MediaSmart Home Server and I wanted to upgrade its storage capability. Purchased 3 of these 2TB beauties. (I still have one slot remaining to fill...will do that a little later.) And here's the thing; I could not find any information anywhere (HP, the forums, etc...) to indicate my server model (EX475) could handle the size of these drives. But I can tell you now, it can! These drives surprised me in two ways: first, they are quiet. And second, they run cooler than the 1TB drives they replaced. For a drive that spins at 7200 rpm, this is really good news. Also, the 5 year warranty is nice to have in the back pocket. And one other thing: Amazon rocked the lowest price and shipped it FREE. Nice!Great news on all counts...way to go Western Digital!

I originally purchased this model Western Digital hard drive back in April 2009 but after about 7 weeks of use it started to die. It eventually did give up the ghost and took about 300GB of stuff I wasn't able to get backed up off of it with it.Western Digital has a RMA procedure in place that involves them trying to up sell you to another model and makes you pay to ship the drive back to them (about $12). I shipped it two day and it took them a week to register the drive even after I was able to confirm it was delivered on time via the tracking number. Then it took them almost two weeks to send me a replacement drive. After the previous experience with this model I was leery of putting any data on the drive but after about a month or so of light use doing temp backups I went ahead and used the drive for its original purchase intent, backup of my main HD (500GB) and storage of music and video files. Sure enough the drive started acting up in all new ways first by making a high pitched whining noise followed by odd clicking sounds. I started trying to get data off the drive and only lost about 200GB this time before it went out on me by not showing up in Windows anymore. Using the drive management utility in Windows 7 it showed up as a RAW partition. Using restoration software I was able to save another 100GB of data before it went out for good.Doing some research reveals that a lot of folks are having the same sorts of problems in about the same time frame with this model drive.I have to admit that this whole experience has made me a bit skittish about purchasing any more WD products which is sad as I've had nothing but very good experiences in the past with their hardware.I did some checking and here in North Carolina if after getting yet another RMA replacement drive it happens again then I can pursue monetary restitution via the AG's office and I will if it happens yet again.

I got this drive to replace the 320GB drive my 24" iMac came with to store more photos on. What I got was not only a ton of storage space but a significant boost in speed! The OS boots up much faster than before and my applications (even poky Photoshop) open super fast now! This drive does run a lot hotter than my old one. In iMacs there is a thermistor attached to the hard drive which controls the fan, and you'll want to make sure you re-attach it to this drive when you swap them. The review at Tom's Hardware says it runs at 114? (46?C) and I notice my Mac's fan kicking on a lot more than with the old drive. This drive came packaged well. Like others have said, large outer box with sealed air cushions, inner box with foot suspensions, etc. This is the 5th HDD I've ordered from Amazon and they have all come this way. The other 4 I've had running in a Drobo for over a year with no issues. I don't blame folks for returning shoddily packed items, I would too. I've been lucky with Amazon on these. The origin point for all of my drives was Lexington, KY - so they must know what they're doing at that facility when it comes to packaging.

This review is moreso about the way Amazon shipped me this OEM drive as opposed to a review on the drive itself.Amazon quite literally threw this drive into a cardboard box and mailed it to me. No joke. No protective padding, nothing. This is an OEM drive so it does not have a retail box of its own. The drive is wrapped in a plastic bag and that's it.Someone at Amazon's shipping department figured this hard drive would be fine on its own inside a huge cardboard box with a few other items I ordered, fully and completely unprotected, flapping about in transit.I am entirely and utterly appalled.I haven't even opened or used the drive yet, so sure am I about its flawed physical, internal condition. It's going right back to Amazon for exchange.I gave the product 4 stars because I believe the product itself is most likely worthy of the review. However, the way Amazon mailed this drive to me is astonishing and needs to be pointed out to potential buyers. As for Amazon: Shame on you. I think some additional training is in order at your packaging facilities. I could make an argument regarding the precious materials and resources it takes to create these hard drives, and what a waste it is to "throw it away", quite literally, by packing such a delicate piece of hardware and technology into an unprotected container. Wow, I still can't believe it...Finally, I think it's hilarious Amazon bills this item as "Ships in Certified Frustration-Free Packaging. This item is delivered in an easy-to-open recyclable box and is free of plastic 'clamshells' and wire ties". Ha! Yea, Amazon. You got that right. It ships in AIR.
