Original thoughts-
I purchased this for my daughter as a Christmas present since she loves drawing and wanted to start being able to do more on her laptop. Reviews I read were promising for a sub $100 device and I hadn't seen any current complaints about their support or setup issues. However, they must be running their back end platform on some old PC-Jr equipment because it took well over 3 hours to simply download the drivers due to consistent website errors, timeouts and generally terrible performance. Once the driver software was installed it appears to be 100% impossible to register this product to download the actual "included" art software as you need to register first. I've tried this for multiple machines now and Houston we have a problem. The driver software includes the Wacom Desktop app which allows you change settings and has the link to download the software, but there does not appear to be any way to register the device from the app. If you try to redeem the software you are sent to page that will eventually, after numerous attempts, will bring you to a page letting you know that you must first register from the desktop app, or manually. As noted, the desktop app doesn't seem to be able to register, however if you attempt to register manually and put in the model number it kindly lets you know that you must register from the app, so that's perfect. It has taken over an hour of battling their garbage site to locate a number to call for support (1-855-699-2266 for those in a similar situation) directly, we'll see how long I'm hold - I do have the option to leave a call back number, but I trust that about as much as I'd my cat to operate heavy machinery).
So we're stuck with Photoshop because at least you can pan around with the space bar and switch between tools with the keyboard. If you surf around on the internet for tips on how to get this thing to work better, you'll find that there's a strange and seemingly arbitrary work around where you write a text file and put it into the Photoshop program folders, then disable "Microsoft Ink" (whatever that is) and your tablet *should* work just fine. Ah, but wait, now whenever I turn the Intuos on *after* Photoshop is up and running it's a 50/50 chance that the driver will crash and you'll have to go restart it which will also make Photoshop freak out so I gotta restart Photoshop too. Save and organize all your work now so you can find it again when Photoshop is done loading up. This happens more often than you think because remember it's Bluetooth; if you leave the pen sitting for a second too long it times out, or you had it plugged into the USB and now you need that USB to charge something else, or you need to charge it so you plug it into the USB.
I'm sure there are fixes for these issues as well because PC users are good at figuring out what's wrong with their machines and they're great about posting those fixes on the internet, but why on earth would you subject yourself to needing to do all the work when Wacom should make better firmware for their products.
My experience using this device for several months now has been frustrating and overall very unpleasant. Don't bother with this thing. Save up a little more and get a refurbished iPad or a Surface.
Idk why people are acting like its a difficult setup, maybe they troubleshot the issues people were experiencing, but basically, plug it in and install the tablet software from the download link printed in the tiny(really tiny) set up guide it comes with... restart computer... use the wacom desktop feature to log in(which will direct you to their website to set up a login) once your email is confirmed, you receive a follow up email with the extra programs info: names/serial keys(just in case you need them😉) then on the wacom desktop or on the website you just set a login to, follow the link for available software and redeem/download the programs! So easy!! Run program set ups from the download file and TA DUH!! You just got a free tablet plus saved a few bucks on the side for what you would pay for all the programs collectively here on amazon separate!!
$60- Corel Paint Studio Pro
$35- Corel AfterShot 3
$50- Corel Paint Essentials 7
+ A tablet and pen to work with!!
..........
So far functionally, It was a trip how you dont have to touch the pad for it to register the pen hovering to move your mouse cursor... fun and interesting experience! Im using it instead of my mouse right now trying to get used to it.... if you're looking for a decent little tablet thats affordable, CHOOSE THIS ONE!!
The only reasons I didn't give 5 stars:
The surface seems a lot rougher than my old one, so the nib has worn down pretty quick in comparison, it comes with 3 extra but eventually i'll need to buy more.
When i click away from the drawing program and come back to it i cant make any marks on the canvas until i lift the pen away and put it down again. not a huge problem but a little weird.
They are taking trigonometry and have to "draw" lines on graph images. This proved to be very difficult with the touch pad on the chromebook and no better using a mouse.
I bought this pad and plugged it in. No configuration was required. The pad can be used as a mouse and can also be used to draw lines on the digital graphs more easily.
The chromebook issued to my child is an HP Chromebook 11 G8 E
Your experience may vary by the type of chromebook you have.
I can only comment about the one I have to work with.
The small size hasn't given me any issue, but I'm already used to keeping my mouse sensitivity very high, and I prefer to draw with small wrist movements rather than sweeping arm movements. At this size, the tablet is great for travel. The small size is not for everyone, though. Keep in mind that the actual active drawing space is the space where there are dots, and that space does not extend out to the edge of the tablet.
Time will tell if I personally prefer the tablet over fighting vector lines with my mouse to keep my art clean and precise, but as a review on this piece of hardware itself and its functionality, the Intuos S works as intended.
Now on to this product. I am NOT an artist. But I am an avid photographer and I love to correct, upgrade and restore photos. If you are an artist, you might want the model with the larger pen space, but for what I do, this one is perfect and totally affordable. I have been waiting for a long time for a quality tablet I can afford and here it is.
I think any install needs the very latest drivers to work properly, so no matter what OS you have, you can go for this tablet, install the latest drivers and you would be very happy for it.
The included software is entry level, difficult to install and is fairly useless unless you are new to graphics software.
The consumer would have been better served if Wacom included a full educational edition of Painter. All things considered, if I had it to do over again , Wacom would not be my first choice .
I use my tablet corded because my computer was not built with wireless capabilities, so I can't comment on the bluetooth abilities. However, the cord is long enough to reach my desk from the front of my tower no problem. Took me less than half an hour to get the tablet fully set up, registered, and working in one of the free programs. The website to get registered and get the programs is in the cardboard booklet and the serial number is on the back of the tablet.
The only thing kind of negative I have to say about this tablet is the drawing program. Corel Painter Essential 7 is alright, but after a few days of dinking around in it I found it to be kind of lackluster. It's a nice enough program, but is a bit bare bones, and I wanted a little more without dropping hundreds of dollars on their other program. I've really been enjoying using this tablet with Medibang Paint Pro, which is also free and a bit more robust in terms of what can be done in it. So if you're having trouble redeeming the programs that come with the tablet than I would recommend giving that one a google.
Among other things, the driver file didn't have a recognized digital signature so I had to disable the signature check on my PC before installing. Then, I kept getting an error that the device wasn't on. I had to repeatedly go into services, stop the service and restart to avoid repeated reboots. The desktop configuration interface also wouldn't work, citing a missing DLL file which isn't something available with Windows 7, even though the specs say that the product is compatible with Win 7.
My product didn't come with the product key needed for registering the product and even if it had, the registration page on wacom's website is broken, with the product field greyed out so nothing can be entered. Yep, tried Chrome and Firefox both. No luck.
What is probably considered the quick start guide is exactly three illustrations intended to get this working. I had to go to Wacom's videos for help and found the examples shown very different from what I had in front of me.
I'm new to pen tablets but my career has been in software development and I know PCs. Never have I had such trouble with a device. The tablet may work fine but I've given up on ever getting the drivers installed.
Returning this product and will not bother giving Wacom another chance.
I will say that Amazon's tech support was great in trying to help me get through this but in the end, we used all the Ideas we could think of, with no success.
Upon receiving it today, I initially just plugged it into my Win 7 graphics desktop, and let the automatic driver-download do its thing. This worked... but only minimally. Fully customizing the tablet's and the pen's features wasn't possible. Went to the Wacom site and downloaded/installed the "real" drivers... and now it's fully customizable, and works flawlessly.
I also vastly prefer this tablet's pen over the one that came with the CTL-480. The two buttons on the former pen were almost impossible to feel, and I found myself constantly having to spin the pen in my fingertips, to locate them. The tips of the buttons on this new pen are raised a bit more, and have a more pronounced edge than the more rounded edges on the older pen's buttons... so I am always aware of how the pen is positioned in my hand.
HIGHLY recommended!
Update: I spoke with customer service and they were able to resolve my issue, which wouldn’t have been able to be fixed without them. So if you get this anticipating being able to just open it and try it out, think again. You’ll likely have to wait until business hours are open and speak to customer service just to get it going
I am a software engineer and I could not believe I had to call support to get the right install package... If you just try to get the driver from the product page on Wacom's site it will fail to work (i could see it forking a new setup.exe process every couple of seconds gradually depleting the available memory and doing nothing else). Hopefully they fix that issue soon (I am writing this on March 30, 2020). The driver name is WacomTablet_6.3.38-2.exe, so you can have the version number for the reference.
Support guy was amazingly rude, but he took me through several screens to download the latest driver package, which finally worked. I can live with rude people as long as they are helpful.
20 mins later the driver... crashed! I was surprised why would the setup application have a menu item saying "restart driver"! Now I know...
Interestingly enough, a $15 noname tablet that my son uses worked out of the box without any drivers and never crashed.
I know that Wacom is a de-facto standard for designers to use on their macbook and that is why I bought this tablet. Everybody else should stay away from this brand.
Good luck
so i boot into recovery mode (luckily, i have a current Time Machine back up... you don't? or you don't know what that is? you're in trouble.) i re-install the OS, takes 2 about 2 hours. i re-install the wacom software, and guess what? it'd ones work, it's "waiting for synchronization" then it says, "log out, log in, if that doesn't fix it, re-install the software."
i log out and in, 3 times. i re-boot (really worried it would not re-start like before). i re-install the software, 3 times. i call wacom tech support again. i'm madder now than before, i've spent 3+ hours trying to get this to work, i was afraid my mac was dead. but i have a back up... you do too, right?
i get a helpful tech support guy this time, it took 30 minutes for him to walk me through the fix. he said, "you downloaded an older driver" i told him it was FROM THEIR OWN SITE, he grunted.
altogether, it was about 4 hours to get it working. and i guess, the tablet works fine. after the time it took, my opinion of wacom has soured, you know? keep in mind this tablet is meant for non-professional consumers. maybe it's easy on a newer or new mac, i don't know.
If you get the weird problem with lag while trying to draw on Windows 10, you can fix the problem by disabling that godawful program Windows Ink Workspace. The problem isn't with the tablet.
For people less literate with tech this might be hard for them at the beginning but after I downloaded the software it was really easy to use.
Mainly use it to do online homework so I don’t have to waste paper.
The pen also comes with a total of four nibs which is really nice which should last you a good while before you would have to buy new ones.
I went with Wacom over the other brands thinking that by spending the extra money, it would make a difference. It appears that it didn't. This Wacom just isn't ergonomic or effective. It's easy to make irritating mistakes with it. For now it's just collecting dust now and I'm back to using a mouse.
FYI the cord is at a 90 degree insert coming out the top left side.
The real problems are with the software - if you are unlucky, you will have to troubleshoot a bunch before you can get your tablet working as much as you like. Disable Windows Ink because they don't work together well; your Photoshop versions may be limited; you may have to restart your computer several times, etc.
Ultimately still good for the price, good for beginners or more casual tablet users not looking for anything serious. The draw size is comparatively small, so if you're going to be serious, I would recommend larger tablets.
I did not try the packaged software, but I'm sure they're acceptable.
