Barring future issues (e.g., see my EnGenius EAP9550 review), I LOVE this access point (AP)!The hardware so far appears to be solid and then some. Coverage is insane; if you're considering the long range model instead of this one, I'd recommend that you start here first. The software is unbelievably powerful and is clearly designed to control dozens or even hundreds of these APs - but as noted by most of the other posters, getting the software to work and then initially communicate with a new AP is challenging.A couple notes, because some product points aren't necessarily clear from the product description:First, this IS a standard stand-alone access point; you don't need to purchase any other hardware or software to make this thing work on your network. This is ONLY an access point; it doesn't provide routing, DNS, or DHCP functionality. This AP is for adding wireless coverage to your existing wired network. In the box is the AP, a ceiling-mount bracket, a wall-mount bracket, a POE adapter, a power cord, a bag of screws, a quick-start guide, and a CD. It includes no user manual or network cable (bear in mind that it's intended to be installed on a wall or on a ceiling at a point to which you will presumably need to run long cable). This AP will ONLY accept power over Ethernet (and as noted in several other reviews, is not standards-compliant); the AP presents ONLY a single RJ45 port (no power port, no USB port, ONLY a single network port). The package includes a 2-port POE adapter and a power cord; to power AND network this thing, you (A) insert a cable between the AP and the adapter, (B) insert a cable between the adapter and your network, and (C) run the power cord from the adapter to a power source (UPS, power strip, wall socket, what-have-you). I installed this thing in my living room where I have run CAT-5, but I put together the adapter and misc cabling in the basement. That is, the fact that it's not standards-compliant wasn't a huge deal for me, and it probably won't be for you either.Next, the AP *must* initially pull its IP address via DHCP, so don't just run the network cable into your laptop or workstation and expect to be able to talk to the device.Along those same lines, you *must* manage the AP with the UniFi Java server software; don't just launch your browser and expect to be able to talk to some magic interface on the AP.For reasons that aren't clear to me, for the initial setup, if my laptop was pulling an IP via DHCP, it couldn't see the factory-configured AP; to get things working, I had to plug the AP into my network, let it pull its IP, and then set my laptop to a static IP on the same network. Once I did that, the configuration "just worked", even after changing my laptop adapter back to DHCP.To configure a new AP after the initial software setup (during which I absolutely could not detect the AP), you need to start two pieces of software: the management software AND a discovery tool. The discovery tool tells the management software that there's AP it needs to configure. After switching to the management software, and before clicking the "Adopt" button, be sure that you click the configuration tab on the right side of the dialogue and set your network configuration correctly. The system will default to 192.168.0/24, and my first go around left me with an AP that I couldn't reach from my 192.168.3/24 network. If the ring light is flashing, the AP is busy doing something like rebooting or reconfiguring; if it's solid orange, you *should* be able to talk to it with the management software. Once the AP is fully configured (even with the wrong network parameters), the ring light will turn green. In summary, given the price and what this hardware is, and the flexibility of the software once it's working correctly, this is an exceptional value. Unfortunately, not everybody will have the time or the ability to work through the initial setup.2013/01/06: Updated to clarify a couple points. I would also add - as noted in the dialogue in the comments - that as of this writing, this AP has been functioning flawlessly for me for over a month. If you have the fortitude to slog through the setup, I really can't recommend this hardware highly enough.

This is a 802.11n Wireless Access Point. It is used to provide Wifi in a home or office. The unit is aesthetically beautiful, and could easily pass for a high end smoke detector. It includes a single LED Ring light that shows whether the unit is offline or online, and can be mounted on the wall or on the ceiling. The LED can be disabled if you need to. Power is delivered to the unit using the Ethernet cable, and a Power Over Ethernet Injector is included in the box.I've tested a number of Wifi access points and routers over the years from Linksys and Netgear, and this is, by far, my favorite. Here's why:1. Range: The range on these things is incredible. With Linksys and Netgear APs, I'd have trouble covering my whole house. This covers my entire house on LOW POWER.2. Adjustable Power: You can adjust the power level from 1db through 20db. A Long Range version is available that can go up to 27db.Note: A bug in the firmware allows you to set the power output at 0 db, but this appears to cause it to default to 20db.3. Linking: You can buy and link as many of these devices as you want. There's no limit to the number of AP's that can be linked via Ethernet cable. On top of that, each Unifi that is plugged into Ethernet can be extended by FOUR Unifis that are not plugged into an Ethernet cable, by wirelessly repeating the signal.4. More Linking: In addition, a Unifi that is linked wirelessly can also have its ethernet port be used to extend your network via wires. Theoretically, you could plug in another Unifi to the Wired port, add it to your network and then link up to four more to that new Unifi wirelessly, and carry on the chain forever.5. Easy to configure: The Unifi includes a disk with software, but you're better off downloading the latest version off Ubiquiti's website. That way, you'll get the latest firmware. When you run the software, it starts a web-server on your computer, and you then use your internet browser to access the configuration screen. The server will detect every Unifi that is plugged into your network and automatically configure them to operate using the same SSID and security settings, and to select the best channel for their location. You can then manually override any settings if you like on a system-wide basis or a per unit basis. If you want to configure a Unifi for wireless linking, you have to plug it in via ethernet first and adopt it, and then unplug it from the ethernet connection and wait until it goes into Isolated Mode, and then you can link wirelessly it to one of the units that are plugged in to your ethernet connection. There's a video on Ubiquiti's web-site that explains everything. Just Google "Unifi FAQ" and you'll find the page that links to it.6. Support for advanced features: Among other things, the Unifi software allows you to configure a Guest Network that is isolated from your own network. It can use its own network name (SSID) and its own security settings/password. Users who connect to it won't be able to connect to any of your internal devices. There is also a whole host of tools to allow you to monitor who is using your network, for how long, with how much data, etc., and you can block specific users as well.Once you configure the above features, you can shut down the server software, and the units will continue operating without the need for a server. You can also create a captive portal for guests, so that they have to enter a password or accept terms and conditions. However, for this to work, you have to leave the Unifi server software running on a Windows Computer 24/7.7. Remote management: Using a special tool that comes with the server software (called the inform tool), you can set a Unifi to get its configuration information from a remote Unifi server. This will allow you to manage a fleet of Unifi units over the internet.8. Long Range and Outdoor units available: Ubiquiti also has a Long Range version available for about $15 more, and an outdoor unit that is weatherproof for about $15 more than that. Like all other Unifi products, they can all be configured from the same User Interface, and each wired Unifi can support four Wireless Unifi's that repeat the signal.---The only trouble that I had setting up the unit related to Windows Firewall. The current version of the software fails to properly configure the Windows Firewall to allow the server to access the Unifi units residing on a network which you have labelled as "Private" in Windows Firewall. You can resolve this problem by going to the control panel in Window, selecting "Windows Firewall," clicking on "Allow a Program or feature through Windows Firewall," and then finding the entry for the Ubiquiti software and enabling it on a Private and Public Network. You might also need to do the same for Java.Or you can disable Windows Firewall while you're configuring and then enable it later.

After fighting with this unit for hours I finally got it running, and the results are amazing. I've been running a Cisco/Linksys E2000 for a year now, and I notice a few places where the signal could be better - upstairs bedrooms, outside on my patio, and on the two PC's that are 80 feet away with some wall blockage. My test connection is on my son's gaming computer across the house. With the Cisco we were getting a decent signal (52% signal, good quality) and had few if any issues. After getting this Unifi AP running I'm getting a full 135 Mbps "n" signal at 100% quality to the same machine. A site test using my ipad indicates I at least doubled the range for my wireless network. However, I took 1 star off this unit due to the difficulty configuring the unit. Here's what I went through. I hope this helps others:First, the hardware hookup is easy. The software install easily off the CD as well. However, the software would not launch. After much research I determined that SOME versions of the install software had an incorrect pointer for 64 bit windows systems. Instead of trying to manually adjust this, I went to the company's website and downloaded the latest version of their installer. After uninstalling/reinstalling, the application started fine.However..the software would not find my new access point. It gave a message that it needed to be attached to the same switch as the PC running the install software (it was), and that was about it. Even their "discovery" program didn't find the unit. I went into my Cisco router and disabled the built in wireless and restarted it. I also looked at the router DHCP table and saw that it had assigned the AP an IP address. So my router knew it was connected, but the software didn't. After much reading I tried a few things....Apparently the software is highly sensitive to what version of Java you're running. There are reports of problems being fixed by deleting Java and letting the install program take care of it for you. I tried this, but it didn't fix the problem. I also tried rebooting the access point by holding down the reset button with a paperclip for 10 seconds. It rebooted, but still not found. I also tried various reboots, unplugs, resets of the AP, router and PC in an attempt to get it discovered. No luck. Finally, based on a commet here on Amazon, I disabled the PRIVATE profile in windows firewall. Lo and behold, the configuration software found the access point immediately! Apparently the installer doesn't configure the firewall settings correctly. Since I didn't want to leave the firewall turned off I experimenned with settings. The solution was to open permissions for the Unifi DB AND Java in the outbound permissions for the Private profile. All were allowed in the PUBLIC profile, but since my network is assigned to my private profile I had to open it there as well. Now, after I solved this little problem I finished configuring the AP. The default setting is to use auto channel and a 20mhz spread. This will get you a max of 65 Mbps bandwidth even on wireless n. In the settings you can change this to 40mhz (HT40), and we immediatly bumped up to 135ghz connection at 100% quality all over the house. So, for this hassle I dinged the unit a star. While this an enterprise device, it should NOT have some of these basic problems...wrong launch path on 64 bit windows, high dependency on Java version, and lack of proper configuration of the windows firewall. Once running it's simply amazing and I highly recommend it.

I am a software engineer and shamefully don't know a lot about networking. Enough to be dangerous let's say. Anyhow, I am not afraid to admit that I did not know the real difference between choosing a wireless router and an access point to extend a network. And now I do, this thing is awesome. I now have 1 router at the entry point in my house that was issued by Verizon and then I configured 2 of these guys to have the same SSID (wireless network) and password. So now wherever I go I have perfect reception with the same SSID. Moreover, I have an ATT Microcell for my cell phone - which would only work when I hooked it up to the Verizon router. So now, instead of creating new networks (routers), I am simply extending my existing network everywhere and my cell works everywhere too. Smart. It ships with really cool software, where you can upload a picture of your house and then place the access points on the map. Geek heaven. You can look at the statistics, devices hooked up to each access points and generally be a network admin. from the comfort of your own laptop. I was intimidated about the setup, cos' I read some of the other posts, but it was a next, next, next thing. Really easy.Great reception, looks fantastic, easy to stick on the wall. And no, I don't work for Ubiquiti. I am just a lost consumer trying to buy the right thing first time. Good luck with your search.UPDATE************ 1 month laterI purchased a second one and this time it did not go so well. The device would not work, however thanks to the vendor (Microcom), they helped me get it up and running. But it was quite a geeky path... so bear with me.Firstly the software that ships with the device is 'contoller' software, which means you can send commands to the UAP through the software. When you load it on your computer (on the same network as the UAPs) it communicates with the UAP back and forth, collecting statistics on who is using what UAP etc. and what firmware is loaded on the UAP.So I had 2 issues and this is how I resolved them.Issue 1) The new (second) UAP did not turn green once I plugged it in. It stayed red and would not work. EVEN when I plugged into the same ethernet cable for the working UAP. I had to download another piece of software called PuTTY. This is a small executable that you run and then through the controller (and confirmed on my routers DHCP table - the one that shows all devices on your network) - I was able to work out the IP, in this case: 192.168.1.5. Then I used PuTTY to create a connection with the UAP using SSH protocol. Sounds more complicated than it is. And I kept it on port 22. Once in, I logged in using the default username/password: ubnt/ubnt. Then I upgraded the firmware by issuing the following commands: mca-cli, then upgrade upgrade firmware (e.g. upgrade [...]) After a few minutes the thing turned green and my wireless network was extended. 5 bars, beauty. The full list of commands are here: [...], in the 'to use SSH' section.Issue 2) The UAP does not communicate with the controller. It says 'adopting' the whole time. This is because the UAP cannot FIND the computer that you loaded the controller software on. Do this: set-inform [...]:8080/inform and then it'll work.I told you is was geekoid, but worth it. I have a router and 2 UAPs transmitting the same wireless network over a large area and I can control the network remotely using my controller software. Go forth a conquer.

So, I am a computer tech since 1995 so I have been around and seen a few things here and there. Almost 4 years ago we bought a house with some older plaster walls that have the metal mesh in them and I have been struggling to buy all sorts of devices that are $500 and less. My issue was always that the wifi was in the garage and it would NOT work in the livingroom which is about 30 feet away at a diagonal with a few walls in between. I have tried Hawking outdoor high power AP's INSIDE my house, I have tried enGenius outdoor for $289 inside the attic, I have had the most luck with having the Apple Airport Extreme, I have tried every linksys, cisco, netgear, dlink, luxul and more products. The issue was always the same, I would not get proper wireless in my house and on top of that, the AP's usually would either drop off or just malfunction constantly from the interference from the wireless baby monitor we have. Long story short, I finally stumbled onto Ubiquiti because one of the AP's I got at my supplier was by PDQ which turned out to be just a company using ubiquiti antennas and netgear routers and packaging them as their AP stations. So I took a chance and got this Unifi LR model, placed it in my garage, left the medium signal strength and WOW! I had more coverage that was stable and interference free in most of my house! Was getting about 60% coverage. So, I mounted it a hallway in the middle of my house, set the signal to HIGH and now, I have FULL WiFi reception about a 40 foot radius in any direction including the garage without a single dropped packet and it doesnt even seem to be bothered by the baby cam and even my URC remote controls work properly in every room... I have tried all sorts of expensive junk and I am amazed how well this works compared to ther items. The software is picky to the java version and windows version you have. My advice, uninstall JAVA from your pc FIRST, then install the Ubiquiti software which will reinstall their needed version of java. After that, it's easy as pie to setup. It allows you to setup as many AP's as you want and all as one AP/Network!Amazing product, thank you Ubiquiti, I am forever greatful and will start replacing all of my client's AP's with these units... I finally found what I have been searching for.--UPDATE 01/2013--Just rolled out 2 of these in one of my clients commercial building (about 8000sq ft) and I got full bars in every corner. The software was awesome, within 20 minutes of powering on the AP's, I had setup a main management level wifi with full networking and bandwidth, and then created a "users" group in the unifi software and throttled their wifi to 1mb/0.5mb and setup their own separate wifi with guest access to prevent network access. The software is absolutely amazing. I recommend to pair this with a Luxul XBR2300 router which is how I install these all the time now (3 setups done, 2 to go). My house is still working great and THANK YOU UBIQUITI for a reliable, solid and affordable prodcut!

I work for an IT company servicing a variety of small, medium, and large businesses. These are our go-to product for wireless connectivity. In the past we've tried other vendors' wireless offerings, but we found them lacking. Poor wireless coverage and disconnects were the norm. Not so with the UniFi.Here's how it works: You need to have a computer to install the UniFi controller software. The controller software is officially supported on PC or Mac, and some enterprising folks have gotten it working on Linux. Once the software is installed, you can configure all of the normal WLAN options like SSID, encryption type, password, etc. It automatically recognizes any access points which are connected to the same LAN, which you then adopt into the network. There is an option to set up a guest network which is segregated from your private computers, and you can even set up a splash page for users to log into. The strength of these units is wireless uplink. One UniFi can wirelessly uplink four other devices, creating a chain to extend wireless coverage in areas without existing network infrastructure. This is done by connecting the AP to the LAN, adopting it, and then disconnecting it from the LAN. It will go into isolation, and from there you can set it to wireless uplink to the closest AP.I had an issue with a couple APs not uplinking recently- if you run into that problem I suggest resetting them to default (either through the software, or using the tiny reset hole in the back of the unit), readopting, setting static IPs and identical channels.Pros:Aesthetics. The UniFi is a beautiful piece of hardware, and looks especially good mounted on ceiling tiles. The color changing led displays the status of the unit.Scalability. If one UniFI is enough for your home or office, great. If it's not, its a cinch to add another one.Range: The range is exceptional on these, and you even have the ability to dial up the transmit power if needed.Stability: These things are rock solid. One client had over 50 users connected to one AP with minimal complaint. They were saturating the network bandwidth, but the UniFi wasn't dropping people either.Ease of Management: The Unifi software makes it easy to monitor your network. You can upload a blueprint or map of your environment and place the access points on it. It offers a wide variety of information about network traffic and users on each access point.Cons:The configuration software takes about 3-4gb of space. You can uninstall it after you're done setting up the network though.Requires a special power over ethernet injector (included).

The Ubiquiti UniFi access points are easily in the same class as Cisco Aironet 1040 access points but are a fraction of the price. A single UAP-LR covers my entire house (and patio) with great signal strength, and replaced two older "consumer grade" 802.11g APs. It doesn't bog down with a dozen (or more) connected and active devices like our old APs did. And it's never "locked up" requiring a reboot to allow new connections like the old ones did every month or so.It's worth pointing out that Ubiquiti UniFi wireless products are not "consumer products" (as in home retail consumers). They are targeted for commercial application, comparable to Cisco Aironet wireless products. In other words, they are not targeted towards the average home user where you just plug it in and it works. You need to have knowledge about networking and be willing to potentially do the initial configuration on a "sandbox" (isolated) network unless you're willing to disrupt your "live" network. The controller used for configuring/monitoring it is Java based, so if you have other software that is dependent on specific Java versions, then you will want to use a separate VM to install and run the controller from. The device itself is actually running a Linux kernel, and allows you to SSH into it to do troubleshooting, but I've only logged into it out of curiosity. It's an amazingly well engineered device. It provides a variety of features that commercial network admins will appreciate, like multiple VLANs, QoS (per user rate limiting), WMM, and isolated Guest traffic (and a whole bunch of guest user features like billing integration). But residential installations can simply skip those since they aren't enabled by default (although home installs probably would want to enable WMM to prioritize voice and video). It also supports L3 management if you have multiple subnets and APs.Cables don't typically come with commercial products and this is no exception. The device provides a clean ceiling mount installation with no visible cables and a very sleek low profile appearance. You simply need to drill a hole for the cable and then two for the anchors (a template is provided). The hardest part was snaking the cat5e cable down from the attic in my vaulted ceiling, but it was worth the effort. It comes with a Ubiquiti proprietary 24 Volt power PoE adapter. Note this model AP can't be 802.3af 48 volt PoE switch powered like the more expensive UAP-Pro model, so you have to use the included PoE adapter. Be aware that you shouldn't locate the AP where people will regularly be within 6-7 feet of it - it's putting out 27 dBm @ 2.4 GHz! The Tx radio is about 3 times more powerful than most home APs, which explains why one of these will replace 2 (or even 3) consumer grade APs.In a nutshell, the Ubiquiti UAP-LR provides commercial grade performance and features but at a home user price. But don't expect home user ease of setup. Highly recommended for network geeks who want a kicka** AP at home and you're too honest to steal a Cisco 1040 from work. Sure, the 1040 is dual band N but it only puts out a max 20 dBm (and costs 3x the UAP-LR).

I live in a 3 bedroom apartment with a few roommates, all of us big time technology addicts. We generally have 10 to 15 devices on the wireless network at any given time. I was routinely disappointed in the wireless performance of my router's wifi, and I at least partially chalked that up to the poor positioning (we've got fiber, but the ONT is in a poorly located closet, as is all the networking stuff). I work in business IT, and one of our big clients uses SonicWall access points and switches, which got me researching. After all, if consumer grade gear isn't good enough, why not go "enterprise" grade? After a lot of Googling, I found that Ubiquity has products that can directly compete with SonicWall in most classes, but at a fraction of the cost. A lot of guys on the Spiceworks forums spoke favorably about Uniquity, and Amazon (still) has the UniFi unit at an incredible price, so I pulled the trigger. This device shipped to me with "everything you need" in the box. The mounting plate was actually snapped onto the WAP itself, so I initially thought I didn't receive one, but its simple to remove. This unit is very light, so I ended up doing a really shoddy mounting job, just 2 screws going into drywall. Thanks to the PoE adapter that's included in the box, you run only an ethernet cable to the device, as the power is "injected" from the other end of the cable. The unit's design is tasteful and understated, so its very easy to forget its there. With the access point mounted on the ceiling in roughly the center of the entire apartment, I am getting fantastic speed and signal everywhere in the apartment. I was actually able to stream HD trailers on YouTube pretty much anywhere outside my apartment as long as it was in the immediate vicinity. Obviously, signal strength dropped considerably with the signal passing through like 3 interior and 1 exterior walls, but it was still usable. On the software side, I currently don't even have the controller software installed anywhere. It was trivially easy to install the management software and my stuff configured as desired. This is a home network so we only use WPA2, no crazy RADIUS stuff for us. As a result, deployment was very quick and easy.I am extremely impressed with the software, which allows you to load in an image of your site's floorplan / blueprint, to help figure out the optimum positioning if you're deploying multiple WAPs to the same site. Obviously, this is over-kill for my use-case, but its also just awesome to see, especially at such an incredible price-point.So far, We've had the device installed and working for about 5 months, and haven't experienced any issues.I highly recommend this device to anyone needing a low-cost high-quality WAP. I'm fairly certain one or two of these could cover a good-sized house with ease. Also note, they sell 3-packs!

I've become increasingly annoyed with the wireless routers and access points from Linksys, Cisco and Netgear. I've used Linksys/Cisco, Netgear and Dlink in the past, Everything seems to work reasonably well in the beginning but then seems to fail after about a year. My most recent Linksys WAP200 AP and WRT54G2 needed constant rebooting just so I could connect via WiFi. It should be noted that I live in a 3,400 square foot house and the upstairs outlying bedrooms never had a very good signal.Enter the Ubiquiti UniFi. I had never heard of it and therefore almost immediately wrote it off. I read every review and ordered one instantly. I installed it in the center of the first floor of our house in an area where it wouldn't be terribly visible, although it looks very attractive. The POE injector was nice so I didn't have to worry about having a nearby power outlet. I snaked a network cable from the basement into the bathroom wall a few days ago. The UniFi showed up today and I had it mounted and running in no time.As far as setup goes, it was really no more difficult than setting up WPA2 on any other WiFi device. The CD worked perfectly for me on my Windows 7 64 bit computer, no need to download any beta software. The only trick was that port 8080 was being used by the Bonjour service on my computer. I modified the settings file for the UniFi (a simple thing to do) and changed it to port 8180 and everything worked perfectly without conflicts. That technique figured to be much easier than trying to figure out how to change the port settings of any possible software that was already using port 8080. All of our laptops, Kindles, Nooks, iPads and iPhones were synced in no time. It was flawless. It should be noted that I am not an IT professional, but I don't really understand how anyone could complain about the setup. It's really quite simple. The signal is significantly better than anything I've ever owned. The upstairs was never good even with the WRT54G2 and a WAP200 configured as a repeater upstairs. I was even able to stream the Watch ESPN app from the master bedroom without any hiccups earlier this evening. A few nights ago, my iPhone couldn't even get a WiFi signal so it defaulted to the usual sluggish 3G connection. I also like that the UniFi will update itself as needed. It's really hard to get excited about WiFi network equipment, but I'm thrilled to have something that works like it should. No other piece of wireless networking equipment I've ever owned has been this strong and easy to set up. Definitely worth the $70 price tag.

Excellent AP, easy to configure, non-intrusive to your existing wireless network, if you have one, great security and amazing range.I have installed these at malls and other locations, though I had no experience with the back end management. The back end software is awesome, though designed for large deployments, it is still very useful in a home environment and gives you total control over the network and every device on it.I was able to pull 25 down, 3 up with a 21ms ping about 300 feet away down the street. One note - don't use the install CD, the version of the Unifi software on the CD does not work with any version of Java over 6.1. It won't work with Java V7.Go to Ubiquiti's website here:[...]and download the latest version. It works fine with Java 7 and above. You need Version 2.3.9 or above of Unifi to work with Java 7. Unifi 2.3.9 is the current version as of today, 4/6/13.You may think this unit is spendy, however, compared to the $45-$55 WAPs and relatively useless wireless range extenders, there is no comparison. I replaced poorly performing Linksys WAPs which ultimately cost more, with this one device and have tripled my range and throughput.A note about this device -you will connect it via an ethernet cable to your existing router or switch. This AP has its own SSID, network key, etc, separate from anything else you may have on your network. If you are using two of these devices, you can have them appear as 2 separate networks, or, put the same SSID and network key in for both, to appear as one network.I am using this AP to "extend" the range of my existing Cisco wireless router to an adjacent building and create a second wireless network. No one on the Cisco wireless network has to change SSIDs, keys, and the network created by this AP is isolated from the Cisco wireless network. This one device solved 3 problems at once.Great product!

The Short of it:I installed two of these yesterday. They were VERY SIMPLE to add to my network. The included software is very intuitive. It took literally 5 minutes from unboxing for these things to be broadcasting internet with my networks SSID and security settings. Routing is handled by a cheap linksys wrt54g. They broadcast strong, and have thus far demonstrated higher speeds for the end users than my previous solution. Monitoring with the included softwares email alerts should allow me to deal with issues before my tenants start calling me. Their diameter is slightly larger than I anticipated, and they have a much thinner profile than I thought they would. They look very classy, and professional. I don't like cheap feeling hardware, and these feel very well made. The POE injectors which are included are also of high quality. I'll update after they've been in use for a while. The long of it:My Scenario:I have an apartment building with 8 two bedroom units. The building is about 200 feet long, and 30 feet wide, and the construction is concrete block and stick frame combined. I do not "own" any of the electricity in the building so I needed a POE solution that I could power from a nearby building, where my router resides.Previous solution:Linksys Wrt54g with DHCP disabled (functioning as an access point with high gain antenna mounted in the center of the building. Powered by a D-link POE adapter. This solution worked well signal wise, but was un-reliable; requiring up to 3 power cycles a week, and rarely less than one. Sometimes things randomly went to pot, and required me to hard reset, and re-enter all the network parameters. Conclusion:Great solution aesthetically, and functionally. Simple implementation. Reasonably priced. Should have bought these a long time ago.

I bought this access point for home WiFi because I was tired of dead spots using Linksys and Dlink equipment. This is definitely a step up from those with sophisticated management capabilities and far better range.I ran into a couple of installation pitfalls (on Windows XP) that I'll note for other's benefit.1. Before installing the Controller software verify that port 8080 is not in use on your system. Mine was being used by a DirecTV app. The installation process didn't warn me there was a conflict, but just installed normally and then wouldn't start, leaving me to Google up what the problem was. It took me a while to figure it out. Uninstalling the DirecTV app and a reboot took care of it, but not until I had created another problem...2. Since the controller app needs Java I thought upgrading from version 6 to version 7 might solve my first problem. Don't do that unless you want to run the beta version of the controller. The version of the controller app that came in the box was 2.2.5, which requires Java 6, and won't run on Java 7. Again, the software provides no warning for this conflict. It just hangs on start up an leaves you wondering.Fortunately there is a handy user forum [...] where I posted my problem and received a prompt reply setting me straight. Rather than downgrading Java, I installed the beta/rapid version 2.3.5 of the controller app (which you can download here: [...] ). It installed like a snap and is working fine so far.So, long story short, if it weren't for that DirecTV app using port 8080 I wouldn't have had any problems. You can check to see if anything is using port 8080 on your system by typing "netstat -a" (without the quotes) in a Command Prompt window, and if you don't see anything like "localhost:8080" in the output you're probably good to go. If you do see 8080 then you'll need to figure out what is using that port. There's a free command line tool called Fport that you can download from McAfee that is similar to netstat but also shows you the program that is using the port. You can download it here: [...]Other than that my only complaint is that there was supposed to be a wall mounting plate in the box, and there wasn't one. Despite all that, I'm still giving it 5 stars because it's just that cool, and is a fantastic value for the price.

Having just had my uverse router installed in my basement due to phone line issues I faced a real dilemma getting a good wireless signal to the outer reaches of my two story house. As always I came to Amazon and started looking for a product to solve my problem. I had already run an Ethernet from my basement into my mostly unused dining room which sits on the first floor of my house smack dab in the middle of my floor plan. My plan was to use a Cisco wireless extender I already had from a previous purchase. Unfortunately the extender only receives half the signal from the uverse router and was insufficient to give me good coverage.Coming across the unifi AP it seemed like the perfect solution. Plug in the Ethernet cable , install the software and be a hero in my families eyes. Never mind those reviews saying installation could prove tricky. Well long story short things did not go smoothly. And all because as others have mentioned I had a program already using port 8080. After determining which one it was and closing the offending program, reinstalling the software and plugging in the unifi I was up and running in 5 minutes.Once running the thing is fabulous. 3 bars on all Apple devices and my laptops are screaming. Hard to imagine anyone especially for home use could need more options than the software provides. And there is a very helpful if somewhat technically oriented forum at Ubiquiti which is very active.4 stars only because of the installation hassle. Given the relatively common port interference the installation documentation should have mentioned it and a work around. Now that I have everything operating smoothly I couldn't be happier.

I purchased this to replace a Netgear WNDR3700 being used to provide wireless to the first floor of our apartment building. The building, a late-19th-century experiment in steel frame construction, has thick metal lath and plaster walls and cement floors with embedded metal mesh, making it a nightmare for wireless reception. Unsurprisingly, a residential router simply couldn't provide a reliable signal outside of the room it was in. And, as often happens, it was being used as an AP, despite being a router, because residential APs are almost nonexistent. This, on the other hand, despite being cheaper than most higher-end home routers, is able to reliably provide decent wireless to almost the entire floor on high power, going through multiple wire-mesh walls despite having competition from several APs in nearby units. PoE also makes it much simpler to install, with only one cable attached. If, in the future, we want to improve reception in areas, or bring it elsewhere, expanding the system should be easy. Many of the complaints about software here appear to be somewhat outdated; the control software installed decently on my Mac. The software does use self-signed certificates for the webserver by default, but as this is intended for people who know what they are doing this isn't that bad, and certainly better than simply running without SSL. The software is refreshingly without all the bloated, useless features that many APs have, and is also refreshingly well-thought-out.

I have gone through every brand of router, access point, range extender, repeater, and have not been happy until I met Ubiquity Networks UniFi Access Point. This is hands down the best wireless access point I have ever used.Simple to setup: It took me less than 5 mins. Just plugged it into my Uverse gateway router and started the UniFi software that comes with the Access Point. Setup a security password and you are set. NOTE FOR PEOPLE ORDERING THIS. IT DOES NOT COME WITH ETHERNET CABLES. YOU WILL NEED 2 OF THEM. This was not a problem for me since I have many laying around from my many other attempts to find a good solution.AWESOME Coverage: I have had every other router or access point not able to cover my entire home. This gives me full bars in every room and outside on the patio! Amazing! The best part is that it does NOT cut your speed in half like I was seeing with other products. The guest access is awesome and allows you to provide quick access to guests and control how they log in and for how long. There are other advanced options such as hotspot, and custom portal options.Statistics are awesome. It shows you how long the device has been connected, what speed, signal quality, uptime, etc.The best part: This has not had a hiccup, slow speed, need to be rebooted, etc It is going strong since I plugged it in without any issues. Every single other device I have tried required some sort of reboot or had a problem within a few hours. Conclusion: If you want a fast, reliable, access point with amazing coverage look no further. I would recommend this over any other.

This is almost the perfect wireless access point. It looks sleek and unobtrusive, it includes everything needed to make it work out of the box, and it's amazingly flexible in terms of deployment options. Signal strength is the best I've ever experienced from a single wireless device (whether an access point, a router, or anything else that provides wifi network access), and this is just the "standard" version! Apparently the long-range version is even better! My only issue with this product (hence the 4-star rating instead of 5) is the fact that it requires a proprietary application to set it up, and the application only runs on Windows and OS X. Since we have no such computers in our environment, I had to acquire a laptop with Windows installed to manage the access points. Once they're configured, the software is no longer needed for the access points to do their thing. But initial setup and any future changes to the wifi settings absolutely require a Windows or Mac computer. Bummer...If it weren't for that one drawback, I would consider this the perfect wifi product. Definitely puts all consumer wireless routers to shame.UPDATE: my smart phone loves this new access point. With our old wireless router (D-Link DIR-655), my phone would last about 12 hours on standby before the battery would die. With this new access point, my phone can easily last 48 hours on standby and still have a bit of battery life left.

Strictly speaking, I didn't really need this AP. My house is just not that big. But I had a problem that I thought this AP would help with and thought I'd give it a try. My wife's camera has a Eye-Fi SD memory card, which by the way are really nice, but it had a difficult time staying connected to our existing AP. My guess here is that her camera has a lot more metal shielding than most cameras and it would degrade the WiFi signal too much.So that lead me to install this AP. I knew I wanted an AP that could have the same SSID as our existing AP. And this one does. The only problem I had getting it installed was I couldn't get it "adopted" into the management software. I checked my firewall settings and made sure all was well, but still couldn't get it adopted. So then I used a SSH client (Putty) to telnet into the AP. After reviewing the logs on the AP I could see that it couldn't resolve the "unifi" host name, and so was unable to contact the management software on my PC so that it could complete the adoption process. I used "vi" to edit the "/etc/hosts" file and added an entry for my PC's IP address followed by the "unifi" host name and saved it all. a quick "reboot" and the adoption process completed as expected.Other than that small glitch in getting it set up and adopted into the network it's been working great. My wife's camera can now connect and stay connected so that her photos get transferred automatically. Plus the WiFi signal now extends into the garage area just in case I want to surf while tinkering about out there.

Just recevied this yesterday and was a little surprised to see it's about the size of a Frisbee. Not that it was a problem, just expecting something a little smaller like a smoke detector size.We have a two story house with a basement and currently have a Cisco-Linksys WRT54GL wireless router installed upstairs, on one side of the house. Our living area is downstairs on the opposite side of the house and while the signal has been OK, it seemed to be pushing it limits. We would get an average of 3 of 5 bars on our laptops and 1 of 3 bars on out iPhones & iPad. Down in our basement, we have a iFit device on the treadmill and a Roku in the workout room. Most of the time the iFit & Roku would work, although it would drop from time to time. We have been using that router for a couple of years and not had an issues with it dropping, however the iPad & iPhone don't seem to have as good of a range, especially after upgrading the iPad to OS 6.So decided to order this device, based on the good reviews and glad we did. We already had a CAT5 cable ran into the basement from the router. I plugged the Unifi AP into the cable and the wall outlet, and in 20 seconds it was connected to the router with an IP address. Installed the software on my PC and went in to set up a basic configuration as naming the access point & user/password. I also boosted the range up to the high setting. Added a security key and was done. We now get 5 of 5 bars on all laptops and full 3 of 3 on the iPhones & iPads. Used it all evening and never had an issue. Working fine today too. It's exactly what we were looking for and at a good price point for it too.

I design, install, and maintain computer networks for a living. A local hotel needed more reliable WiFi and I quoted them for Cisco hardware. The price was too high so we decided to try these out instead. Compared to the old hardware we have fewer access points, and more reliable WiFi. In practice they have about the same range as the Cisco hardware we originally quoted and we have not had to play around with them since they were installed. They just work.Keep in mind this is commercial equipment and if you need help hire someone who knows what they are doing. None of the setup made me think too hard or sweat a decision. If you are familiar with terms like SSID, PSK, and VLAN this will be a breeze. The package contains all that you need except an existing network and ethernet cables.Specifically it contains a POE injector, wall mounting ring and screws with drywall anchors, as well as a metal ring and longer screws for suspended ceiling installs but the rings could be used to hang the access point from just about anything flat. There is no hardware to mount this from a pole or mast but that's just fine since it is an indoor access point. Finally it contains the software and manuals needed for configuration. Those are also available for free from the manufacturer's website. This product does require that you use proprietary software to configure it. You should probably know what you want your SSID and PSK to be and you will get to choose your username and password. Finally the management suite is fairly deep for the price, it supports VLANs, multiple WLANs, user groups, and more. One novelty I found myself using despite calling the feature stupid at the outset is a map that allows you to make notes about the location and function of each device.

I Admin a large corporate farm and have many Ubiquiti products from Airfiber line and most of the Airmax product line . I spanning 2.2 miles Point to point and multiple and multiple wireless bridges to warehouses and other out building running standard services including VOIP. Little to no issues except for the occasional loss of config on power outages which UPSs resolved. I needed a decent AP to run some automation through for truck scaling and security camera in a few locations around the plants I purchased these figuring I would keep the Ubiquity trend going. I purchased a few of these and have been disappointed. the devices i was able to get to configure with the Unifi controller worked well. getting them to detect and adopt to the controller was a nightmare and a half. I could ssh to the devices to perform all the step recommended by the KB but in most cases could not get the APs to either detect or adopt to the controllers even after manual setting the controller address for the APs. It was a pain with support on the line we uninstalled and reinstalled the controller multiple time checked DNS reset to factory defaults time and time. Finally all but one are working but I said to heck with the one and tossed in a cheap Asus and all is well. Flush the Unifi software and they have something with this product but......

Okay, I know they have a dual band model and I knew I didn't buy it. I didn't buy it because it was so expensive and I never herd of Ubiquiti. I researched the company and watched the products forums for about a month. I saw some potential problems and bugs that caused a little concern so I elected to risk less money on 1 AP. I was also worried about how many I would need for coverage in the house. I didn't want to buy 2 of the pro version only to find out I need 1 more.My experience has been very positive though. Performance is the word. I defiantly see enterprise quality at consumer level pricing. I am using free a amazon EC2 instance as the controller and my wireless life is great. This AP replaced the wireless function of a 1 year old cisco linksys router and a couple repeaters. I do use RADIUS and the cisco unit was having some problems with some clients. I now have 3 SSID's running at a much higher signal strength throughout the house off this one AP. Now if I bought the pro version it would only be to get 5GHz. Signal coverage is not an issue with this unit.I haven't had any of the issues I saw on the forums.

Product looks great mounted on the wall. Some reviewers scared me with the complex install instructions. I already have a router setup on the second floor of my house but with about 6 walls and floor between my bedroom and there i would get very very weak signal. so i ran a cat 5 cable around the house to my basement suite( opposite of the house). Simply connect the ubiquiti AP with the POE injector with the cable i ran. Colours starting changing and it automatically updated and adopted. then just loaded the software from website and had full control of all the features. Range is really really good. I could have simply just left this in the place of the original router because from my basement suite to the orginal router location it will have full signal.Definately worth the price, next home i would just buy two on opposite sides of the house and forget about wifi issues. Been up for over 3 weeks with no dropped connections. We have DSL 25Mbps, have steady 20Mbps almost all areas of the house, 24Mbps when close.Would recommend to any family or friends who want a new router.

This whole experience has been (still is) a headache for me.I will save readers from a long drawn out post describing my horrific endeavor and just point out that I was unable to configure this access point using my 15" Macbook Pro Retina with the Thunderbolt to GigE adapter. I attempted with the 1.3.3. controller software release as well as the newest 2.3.9. My conclusion is the Thunderbolt to GigE adapter is the culprit. So I am now trying a windows box with an ethernet port.I was unable to get a response from Ubiquiti tech support with two requests (about a week apart) but with each request, an automated response advised I seek support through the CUSTOMER based forum. I am still working on a solution through that avenue. For the record I am attempting to configure the AP for use with a windows box as we speak. It's been 2 hours since the windows based controller software has started the "adoption" phase. It's still not working properly.

The first ten minutes were amazing and I was impressed and giddy with the level of configuration and control offered by the system. Slick, flexible and powerful. Then it stopped working. This was installed at a client site, so after numerous hours and many return visits later, this "amazing" system has actually proven to be a huge disappointment and a revenue (and possibly relationship) - loser for me.The web is rife with possible "fixes" to the issue - running command lines in SSH shells and some fairly esoteric stuff to try to fix something that should work out of the box. These are not high-end configuration issues and problems with enterprise-class RADIUS compatibility; these are problems where the AP's simply don't work, cannot be managed, and won't even reset back to factory defaults so you can try to start from scratch. In other words, they are effectively: attractive smooth white plastic doorstops.
