I've tried them through all sorts of sources, from wiring in my iPod to listening to Amazon Cloud via bluetooth on an Android phone. I tried all kinds of music, ranging from dynamic orchestral pieces through to Knife Party brostep bass-filth, and there wasn't a single moment where they were anything less than amazingly impressive. The more epic the music you're listening to, the better.
These headphones are already quite heavy on the ear, so you don't hear that much of what's happening around you- something to bear in mind when crossing the road obviously.
Everything about these headphones works well. Bluetooth connection is a doddle. Charging is fast, and a full charge seems to last a really long time, though I haven't measured this- they have lasted me an entire day no problem, and I leave them on charge at home. They are intelligent enough to realise when they're not being used and power off sensibly.
The buttons are very discreet- so discreet that it takes a while to get used to where they are, since they're small and labelled in black on a black background. Once you've grown accustomed to which button is which though, skipping tracks by poking your finger in your ear becomes second nature.
For bluetooth phone calls they are inexplicably good. The built-in microphone is almost invisible and is quite some distance from your mouth, yet the person on the other end of the line (and I've tested this) thinks that you're using a normal phone, because your voice comes through very clearly. I'd rather have a phone call using these than holding my phone to my head, and in fact that's what I do now- might seem a bit odd to other people but it's comfier and hands-free, even at home.
The packaging is plush but not over the top. The pouch is a fine accessory, not amazing but it does the job. The included audio cable is a little bit on the thin and unconvincing side, but since most people will be using these with Bluetooth I guess they didn't think that was important. A decent equivalent cable will only set you back a couple of extra quid if you'll be mainly using these as wired headphones.
If I had one criticism, it would be that the volume buttons don't operate when you're using a wired audio connection- the volume only controls the Bluetooth input volume, so for example if you're using these to listen to your iPod with a cable, you'll have to use the iPod to control the volume. This tiny little issue is a very very minor disappointment, but the audio quality is so good that I could never even consider giving them any less than the full 5 stars.
Amazing.
Pairing via Bluetooth with my iPhone 5S was a doddle, and pausing, playing and navigating tracks from the phone is a breeze - as is taking calls. The sound quality is also top notch, with warm but not overpowering bass. Sony claim that these 'phones decompress Bluetooth audio to provide a less 'lossy' sound for the listener and they seem to have carried this off, with differences between wired and wireless performance all but imperceptible. I don't have an Android device so haven't had a chance to try the NFC connection, but other reviews suggest this works well also.
If I was to find fault, they are quite bulky and don't fold down at all - and they come with a cheap-feeling bag offering only limited protection. But given I mainly use them indoors and don't move around much, this isn't a problem for me.
Alongside similarly priced offerings from the likes of B&W, Bose and Beats, these really are a great reminder that Sony has made and continues to make great headphones. I'm very happy that I wen't with them.
The returns process is very easy, and in only a few days my replacement headphones arrived.
I am not an expert on headphones so cannot rate these compared to others on the market but as someone who is often away on business I was looking for headphones which would allow me listen to musc through either my mobile or laptop without worrying about cables. Also important was to be able to make or recieve a call. These headphones are perfect for this.
The sound quality is cystal clear, and I am now hearing so much more which is clearly lost through my home HiFi system. Setting up the headphones via Bluetooth again is simple and quick. For me they are also very comfortable to wear, and after a few minutes you forget you have them on your head.
I have ordered seperately a hard carry case to help protect the headphones, as I feel the soft carry case supplied does not offer any real protection, but is a good space saver option.
So if like me you listen to music and make calls from your mobile or laptop and are looking for good quality, wireless headphones for everyday use then in my opinion the Sony MDR-1RBT are a good choice. I am certainly Very Pleased with my purchase.
I do really really like them, only it don't love them compared to my logitech headphones and who can explain love?...
The sound quality is fine, but not extreme. The sound is a little warm, but quite pleasant, and the Bluetooth sound quality is nearly identical to wired. You can get that "ahhh" from the wired sound that isn't quite achieved with bluetooth but it's hard to perceive in most listening environments. The battery life is phenomenal.
Sound is amazing and if they worked perfectly on the first time round these would've gotten 5 stars. i've tried these headphones before actually buying them and i'm gutted i've gotten a rotten one but i can't wait for the replacement!
Furthermore, I was so unimpressed with the product that I promptly returned it using Collect+ (one of the returns services amazon encourages), my refund was processed as expected and the funds were put into my account. A few weeks passed and I saw the same amount had been deducted from my account and apparently they never received the product!
I've got fed up of shipping my Beats Pro between home and work, so decided to get some decent new headphones. Having some wireless Turtle Beach headphones for gaming, i really see wireless as the future, so after a lot of research, these seemed to be the best wireless headphones out there.
Packaging is nice, but it does seem a little tight, that you don't get a charger for these headphones.
Pairing them to my phone (Nokia Lumia 920) and iPad was simple and instant. The controls work perfectly with both devices.
Sound quality is excellent. Bass is a little boomy on some songs, but seems to be improving with usage. And i have noticed a little distortion on very complex music sequences, which don't happen on wired headphones, generally i'm very happy though.
Battery life is excellent. I've not had them run out on me yet. I've had 5+ hours out of a single change. Pity there's no way of getting a charge percentage to know how much power remains.
Build quality is ok. The plastic is an absolute fingerprint magnet. The FF/REW/Pause button feels nice, but i do wonder about its longevity. Same for the charger cover, nice enough, but will it last a couple of years? I suspect not. Wireless charging would be an awesome edition.
These are supremely comfortable headphones, far better than any over ear headphones i've ever tried. Unfortunately, comfort is also the reason these headphones have got 3 stars, not the 5 stars i'd love to give them.
A couple of other people have mentioned sweaty ears, and i'm definitely suffering with them. I can wear my Beats all day long, with no issues. I can wear the Beats at the gym with no issues. But these things just heat my ears up, at the gym, i need a seperate towel just for my ears. Its such a shame, as otherwise these are outstanding headphones.
I'm looking into other pads for the ear cups, which may sort the overheating.
Sound is super clear. Blue tooth works really well. Can control next/prev track, pause, volume and that makes them usable in gym. ear cups soft and comfortable and holds them securely to your head without making them uncomfortable. Very little sound from outside world gets through so I would not recommend for walking in public places where metal cars can now creep up on you.
They do also have a phone button for voice activating a phone call or answering i someone phones you whilst you are wearing via bluetooth to phone. Not used this function yet.
Previous equipment: Beyerdynamic DT880 (£200)
Approach: Long Term
Price: £199
Bad:
- no stiff carry case (the one included is no good for plastic... +£21.45);
- headband and battery are non-user replaceable (DIY could still make the headband (making one from lambskin +£8.97), you can't get the SP70A, 925mAh, 3.6V battery though (there is a 950mAh CyberShot DSC-W70B version, Norway, +£28.45);
- not balanced weight wise: the heavy battery rests in the R cup, while the light PCB is in L;
- mould/ insert parting lines (injection moulding) visible on each component (looks cheap);
- when folded the ear cups touch/scratch one another;
- the ear cups are delimited by a small protruding pin (on the fork/ hinge component- not clever);
- Pleather pads feel cheap (a slap in the face at the initial £399 but bearable at £199);
- 90% plastic components (bad if you think long term);
- the finish quality, accessories (including the box) send a clear message: ''I'm a mass product from a Chinese Sony controlled shop floor and I'm here to make money''.
Good:
- design & comfort, portability, battery life;
- light/ no sweat (large vent)
- sound (large vent: freer diaphragm movement particularly in bass frequency area + quicker more rhythmic low frequency response).
- wideband audio performance 4hz- 80kHz
- good passive sound isolation, little sound leakage.
These are probably the first bluetooth headphones where I wouldn't notice that I'm streaming audio from bluetooth
rather than wired. Range seems to be very good allowing me to roam the house when the phone is charging without
any drop off in connection. I can't emphasis enough that the bluetooth audio quality is excellent and is the
best i've experienced, quality difference is un-noticable from the wired connection. If you're after a
bluetooth headphone with excellent audio quality in bluetooth mode, then these are for you.
Comfort and fit are excellent and I've no issues with either.
The cost is the big drawback, I have several wired cans including Sennhesier HD 650's and Sony MDR-V6's.
The MDR-V6 is an excellent pair of headphones and can be had for around £60. Since I was after a wireless
set for convenience (Phone, Tablet, PS Vita etc)I chose the MDR-1BT and have no regrets. If bluettoth isn't a big deal then you'd save a chunk by buying the Sony MDR-V6. If like me, you want an excellent sounding bluetooth headphone you'd find it hard at present to beat these.
I guess there will always be experts who don't like this or that. But these headphones are really good.
The price is really high and no headphones should cost this much, but for less you get less quality. The corporations, man. The corporations are here to screw us. At least I can listen to sweet music with these headphones while they do it.
I've tried other BT headsets and returned them immediately as the sound was awful (Sennheiser)
Overall very happy with them.
These are only the second pair of headphones I have ever tried via Bluetooth on my Ipad 4 and after my first experiance with IT7x I really did not think bluetooth could get much better sound and connectivity wise. I could of not been more wrong.
The headphones are well presented in a padded snug box with a USB charger and audio cable if you choose to physically connect them instead. There is also a a handy carry case to store them away in. The headphones are very well padded and do not clamp
your head at all as described by other reviews for other manufacturers. For my first night of use after unboxing I used them for more than 4 hours solid with no discomfort at all, a total pleasure to wear.
The headphones appeared fully charged when received as I still have not charged them at all yet. Syncing with my Ipad and Iphone worked seemlessly and without issues by holding down the power button for 5 secs. After all the issues reported with IOS 6.01 and bluetooth
I thought I may at least encounter some connectivity issues similar to the IT7X but hopefully better sounding, but there were no issues at all to report. I played video through wifi and bluetooth for the headphones and both without issues much to my amazement.
The sound quality through these headphones is utterly amazing even through the bluettoth connection, no hiss or static even when nothing is playing. Every sound is so crisp from amazing highs to deep thundering low beats. I have a sudden urge to listen to my whole music collection just to hear it again through these monsters!
I have not even tried the physical connection yet as the bluetooth connection has been so good. I have some wireless Corsair 2000 headphones which the signal appears to break up after approx 10-15 feet away and a wall inbetween but these I have
been wondering all around my house and outside and so far have not gone out of range. But to be honest there is really no comparison.
Overall I would usually never spend such a ridiculous amount of money on a pair of headphones but these are without question worth every penny!
UPDATE 150713:
While I am still impressed with the product and would still recommend them I have found that when I listen to audio books the sound drops out intermittently but sometimes on a regular basis so you end up missing parts of sentences. This does not happen when I listen to music so I am unsure why this is the case with audio books.
These have blown any previous headphones I've had out of the water and I prefer Sony products over many others.
I've had a range of music played from these and have been in the office listening to music at a very high volume with my colleagues not affected in the slightest.
My only quibble would be with the NFC sometimes dropping when trying to sync up your phone but on second attempt it connects without fail.
All in all, I would buy these again and are perfectly priced for comfort, quality and brand. Well done Sony for another quality product.
One further, I've used these headphones for the past 3 days straight without having to charge them... quality hasn't been affected at all. I'm yet to try the cable connection but as of yet have had no need for it.
Well recommended for anyone needing some noise cancelling, top sound quality, and well manufactured headphones.
