This beautiful camera is to me the pinnacle of "handheld" HD cameras for the event videographer (I quote "handheld" cause it's a bit hefty for long handholding). After years of prosumer HD cameras that never quite lived up to the promise of 1080p resolution, this generation of Panasonics nails it with both enough sensor resolution to max out the 1080p, and sufficient low-light capability that noisiness doesn't make the low-light footage look low-res. The lens range is stupendous, starting extremely wide and with tremendous reach, leaving one with no desire (in event situations) for anything else. It has the revered Panasonic "mojo" for color rendition and light handling. DRS is a tremendous help in the unpredictable and extreme world of event lighting (especially theatrical lighting). Manual controls are excellently laid out and intuitive; while assist features (especially focus-in-red) really are a step up in event situations. The various shooting modes and qualities provide a wide range of shooting possibilities, with a 32GB card providing from 3 to 12 hours of recording. Dual card slots with simultaneous or relay recording provide different types of security for event shoots. Finally, the lack of PCM audio on AVCHD camcorders was what made me continue to hold onto my HVX200A for a long time, but the 160's ability to record uncompressed was the final point that enabled me to completely separate from P2!

For those familiar with Panasonic prosumer cams, and thinking of upgrading, here are some comparisons:

HVX200A - finally free of P2 cards! I love the security of P2, and the speed of transfer when it's at its best, but I have gotten very tired of the P2 workflow. CardBus is a thing of the past, so one has to rely on ad-hoc solutions or expensive Panasonic readers. But mostly, decent SDHC cards in high capacities are fairly cheap, and GB for GB, of course, AVCHD stores a lot more. Which means, in practice, I don't have to spend hours after a long day of shooting to transfer and back up P2 cards so they will be available the next day. I had 108GB of P2 cards, which cost me thousands of dollars over the years, but were barely enough to cover 3 hours of shooting (and restricting me to 720pN for most things). I can now fit more footage, at better resolution, on a $25 Transcend SDXC card. I can keep enough cards around that I can offload them at my convenience, or even just keep 'em, or pass them on at the end of a shoot. The freedom, convenience, and flexibility is a world of difference. Also, in a pinch, I can buy media almost anywhere. I'll discuss image quality below... but feature-wise, the 160A surpasses the HVX in every way EXCEPT 4-channel audio recording.

HMC150 - The HMC150 shares the benefits of SDHC media (though it only has one slot and lacks relay or simultaneous recording). I discuss image quality below. But it is relatively feature-poor. And lacks PCM recording, which is important for musical events. The HMC is a much lighter and smaller camera, which is useful in some situations, though. While the HMC150 has DRS, it only works in 1080i and 720p60, neither of which are of use to me! On the AC160, DRS works in all modes.

HVX200A and HMC150 - Image Quality - The HVX and HMC share a sensor block, and thus have very similar image quality. First off, the AC160A has dramatically superior resolution. The 960x540 sensors in the HMC/HVX did not approach the limits of the HMC150's full-raster 1080 modes, or even the HVX's reduced (1280x1080) DVCProHD frame. In fact, even 720p on these cameras is noticeably less sharp than on the AC160. Put another way, the AC160 can stand a lot more reframing in post. And while the Ac160 is nominally less sensitive than the HVX/HMC, the image is so much cleaner and less noisy, even with moderate gain, that it trumps the older cameras in low-light capability. I get much more flexibility in post for grading than the HVX/HMC provided - less banding, less noise, more ability to increase levels and still appear natural. The only potential issues is are course CMOS jello and flashbanding - but these have not been an issue for me (though admittedly I'm almost always on a tripod). Otherwise, the images are beautiful, with all the familiar Panasonic image settings to "paint" your video, and the famous Panny organic look.

AC130 - I have an AC130 as well, and for most event situations the 160 doesn't provide a lot more. The variable frame rates might have some benefit for some event situations (weddings? some product/technique demonstrations?), but in general not so much for live events, and also... just shooting 60p gives you 95% of your slow motion needs for 30p or 24p projects. SDI? Never use it. But for me, the PCM audio was highly compelling. Otherwise, the two cameras are the same, with the same image quality. For two or three-camera shoots, I'd never want more than one 160 and the res

Are you shooting on a DSLR? If so you'll love this package. All the extra goodies are really stuff you'd use for a DSLR. The camera bag is a Vivitar bag. The tripod is wayyy too weak for holding the AG-AC160. You would actually put your camera in jeopardy if you put it on this tripod!
I believe the lenses will work on the camera. I haven't fully checked out the camera yet, but I assume it will work fine. The shipment did come very quickly.
Bottom line: Don't buy this package if you think It'll make you a professional shooter overnight.

I love this camera. Every time I pull it out of the bag, which is every day because I'm a news videographer, I feel good. Another opportunity to record great video.

I had the AG-AC130 (and loved it) but decided to spring for the 160A when it came out. So far I've shot everything in 1080 60p. The quality is terrific. I FTP my news video to the station in an MP4 format, so the 28mbps is higher than I need.

I'm using the new expanded focus feature on the 160A instead of the focus-in-red. I find that with EFV detail on, the image sort of "blooms" when you lock it in and that's the best way for me to get crisp images. However, I used to use the focus-in-red function and liked it too. The only thing about focus-in-red is that if you use it at the same time as EVF detail, you get a much wider range of things that appear in focus. If you use focus-in-red, turn off the EVF detail.

I also think the LCD on the 160A offers a better color image. On my old 130A, the color on the LCD had a greenish cast to it so I configured the LCD to operate in black and white. That was good in tandem with the focus-in-red function. But with the 160A, I'm using color in the LCD to give me more peace of mind about white balance. The colors in the LCD are very vivid at 0 settings, so I have dropped the color to -4 and upped the contrast to +4. I wish I could adjust the color settings for the LCD but you don't get that option.

But you get many, many options for adjusting the camera's images and I have played around with them a lot. I was shooting material with the DRS function on, which really boosts the brightness of the image, but you get more noise in the darker areas of the picture. So right now I'm using a BPRESS setting with the mid knee option. Blacks are better and the overall picture is less noisy.

The camera is just the right size - not so small that you feel like it's a toy camera but small enough, and light enough, to be portable when you're running around shooting news. The optical image stabilizer is terrific. I use it all the time when I'm hand-holding the camera. I also bought a Manfrotto monopod with a fluid head (costs $245 at B & H) and love using it with the OIS for quick interviews. The shot looks as if it's on a tripod and the monopod is quicker to use than a tripod and more portable.

I can't say enough about the ability to use SDHC cards in this camera, as well as the 130. I'm using Class 10 cards (Transcend, Sandisk and PNY) and all have worked flawlessly. I have used the function that allows you to record simultaneously on two cards, but typically set the camera to relay record so it transfers to the next card if one runs out of space. I just bought an SDXC UHS-1 card, 95 mb/s, (from Amazon) and am waiting for it to arrive. Glad to have the option of using very fast cards with tons of space.

Finally, kudos to Amazon for its customer service. When I bought the 160A on Amazon, the transaction was quick, easy and straightforward. The camera arrived faster than I expected. Plus, I had more peace of mind that Amazon would back me if there was an issue. Amazon sets the new standard for customer service in the 21st Century.

I have been using this camera for about 10 months and it never fails to amaze me. My only advise is to really spend a lot of time getting acustomed to all the features especially the focus assist feature. The lens is incredible. A shoulder brace is recommmended and a good quality shot gun mic. The dual card recording makes life simple for those annoying clients that need a copy and for peace of mind with the ablitity to have a double master. I have beenusing DVC Pro cameras for 15+ years and wish this camera was around 20 years ago. Great for traveling, news gathering and sports coverage.
It's a work horse.

I bought this camera for weddings and to do tutorial videos on YouTube. The camera is, according to my small experience, very amazing in low-light. I don't know, I think it’s a big camera body-wise but it's still great. There is one thing I didn't find a reason to is that the camera makes some clicking noise when I tilt it forwards and backwards and that's only when it's power is off. But when I turn it on the sound isn't there anymore. I think it's the sound of the power zoom gear engaging, it simply isn't there when the camera is on.

The image this camera makes is very amazing. I use it in my home studio and the image played back on HD TV is superb..
Definitely recommend this camera…

I am happy with product ordered and definitely plan to continue shopping at Big Value as I like the Kit offered. But to bring to your attention the Full Size Tripod received is broken and there was a leak in lens cleaning bottle which leaked on everything in starter package and the table top tripod was rusted.. The camera bag received is not the one shown in product picture..but I am very happy with. Plan to shop Big Value very soon.

Very happy with this camera. My only gripe is it eats batteries. I have 2 and it destroys them on longer shoots, so be sure to stock up on some spares. Beyond that I've put about 100 hours on this camera so far and it's been rock solid. New firmware upgrade also adds a lot of nice features.
