My wife and I shoot a local short track asphalt racing. We had purchased a Nikon D7000 and needed another camera but couldn't quite swing the cost of another. After researching we found that the D5100 shared a lot of the same features as the D7000 at a considerable savings. While the D7000 does have a few advantages of the D5100, for the money we feel like we made a good decision.

Abour 7 years ago I bought a D70 and used it with the 18-200 lens and the 50 mm f1.8. The 50 mm does not work on the new camera (it would work on the higher priced 7000.I was thinking about an upgrade to a new camera for a couple of months and as I left this months for a cruise to the Holy Land I decided that I better do it now. And I am glad I did.I took the 18-200 and for inside photos my son's 35 mm Nikon f 1.8 as in many churches you were not allowed to use a flash. It worked great. The adjustable LCD screen is great also when you want to shoot photos holding the camera above a crowd or to shoot photos of people when I wanted them not to see that I was shooting a photo.A definate buy.Christian BellingrathApollo Beach, FL

A former Nikon 35mm camera user, I had bought a Canon Rebel when I decided to go digital several years ago. I have never been totally happy with my Canon, and when I read the reviews on the D5100, decided I wanted one. This camera is awesome! I have so much more creative control over my shooting. The Nikon is much more light sensitive than my old Canon... and I love the folding viewing screen! Every time I use the camera, I discover new reasons to love it.

I have been a nikon user for more than 12 years, and I end up with the D5100 as a step down from the super D90. I had some issues with the D90 after 3 years of using it, and when I wanted to change to the D7000, the market was empty and I couldn't locate one, so I got the D5100 which have the same sensor, almost same features and here are the good things about it:1- amazing photo quality for automatic settings2- good low light and no-flash photos, acceptable noise in high iso3- very light even with power zoom (18-200 vr)what I mis1- the "click" in the shutter, the D5100 is so not egressive, it sound very soft2- the "grip" as compared to the D90. this one feels like a toy and its too small3- the control bottons are not well located , its al little bit confusing to select options4- no top LCDoverall, its a good camera, and i am happy but not very happy with the handling, but its a keeper.

Out of the box, I was having a lot of problems with the camera recognizing my Sandisk Extreme Pro SD cards. I could take three or four photos and then the camera would give me a 'No SD card inserted' message and stop working. This happened several times and I actually started packing everything up to return it. I'm glad that I went to Nikon's website first and found the firmware update...The update is easy to perform and completely takes care of the issue. In the SETUP MENU of your camera, scroll all the way down to FIRMWARE VERSION. If your camera reads 1.00 on the A and B lines, you'll want to perform the update.With the firmware issue out of the way, I am really happy with the performance of this camera. The photo quality is nothing short of outstanding. The D5100 performs very well in low light situations and also has a high dynamic range to handle difficult high contrast situations.Additional note: A nice "bonus" feature is that this camera can use old manual focus lenses - even the non-AI models. They can only be used in Manual exposure mode. You will have to use an external meter to calculate exposure (or use the histogram information in the photo playback to check exposure). If you don't mind using classic, old-school photography technique, lenses like the 50mm f1.4 and 55mm micro Nikkor can acquired at very low cost. They can produce outstanding results with this camera using the "Rangefinder" mode to help indicate when your subject is in focus. You will need to make sure that the lens that you want will not interfere with the mirror in the camera - this caveat would mostly apply to older fish-eye and specialty lenses that were designed to use with the mirror locked-up in the older film cameras of the day.

Great camera! As someone that doesn't really know a lot about cameras I really liked it. I love how the photos and even videos look. Hopefully I keep on learning about all the things it can do.

Wanted a quality camera for a begining photographer. The D-5100 is light weight, yields beautiful images printed at 11.5 x 17 inches, learning to change settings on controlls by using navigator dial on rear is quick and easy, and there is a help button on the right rear side with quick hints. The rotating rear screen lets you aquire images at odd angles. The top of the camera does not have a settings window on the right side, but the simple push of a button opens a window with setting data on the rear screen.BOTTOM LINE: We took two of these on a recent trip, and both new photographers aquired beautiful shots.

It shipped fast, it was the model I was expecting. Finally updated my camera body! I really do love it.

I don't know that I can even say how much I love this camera. For all types of shooting this camera seems to be able to do it all. I have all Nikon lenses for this camera and really cannot say I dislike anything. I only have one thing that I have struggled with which is the delayed and remote shutter settings seem to be lacking for my desire. But simply amazing photos become the usual so quickly with this thing.

The product and the pishing was ok, I recived it before of the time accorded. And the description correspond with the reality of the product.

We thought with all of the features that when you use in automatic mode, it would take amazing photos, but they are hit and miss. Guess we better learn how to use it in manual mode.

Anyone who is willing to drop this amount of money on a camera is seriously wanting a good one. This is great for pros (my husband) and the lay-men (me). My husband is able to do everything on manual and get a more detailed picture and the automatic is easy to use and quick.

There are so many lengthy, detailed reviews about this camera, written by experienced photographers. If you're truly serious about buying an SLR camera, then I assume you've already done your homework and read these reviews.So, there's really only one more thing I can add to these reviews, especially as a beginner in photography: WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?! This camera is AWESOME. Quit reading about it and just buy it already!! It is every bit as good as everyone says it is. JUST. DO. IT.

I purchased this camera as a "back-up" camera to my Nikon D80 and also for the purpose of recording videos. For the price, it's a great camera! Using my 35mm lens, it record very crisp video and the sound quality isn't terrible, either! I'd definitely recommend it for someone wanting a more simple DSLR with the ability to record!

Used to have the Canon T2i but changed for the Nikon D5100 and I'm very happy with the upgrade.The image quality and color is a bit better, it has the capability of doing in camera editing, it has more focus points, it has an OUTSTANDING LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCE, and it definitely feels better in my hands.Go for it!

Good image definition but it's less ergonomic than the D40 (my old camera). the Vari-angle LCD Monitor is a excelent help for a many dificult shots

I really love this camera. I am a beginner and with a little bit of internet reading on basic photography, I was off using manual mode ASAP. I have captured some amazing shots with my limited skill and time. I think this camera really gives me room to "grow" into it, also. I am looking to get another lens but the one that comes with this camera is not just a throw away.

I've always been a Nikon fan and use a D3X myself. I purchased the camera for my daughter as a good introductory camera with an excellent reputation with good build and excellent performance. I would have scored the camera 4 stars, unfortunately its not value for money at all when purchased from Amazon.While the camera is great unfortunately AMAZON is a complete CON! Bitterly disappointed that I was charged $84.95 for delivery when I paid online and I've just been informed that the recipient also got STUNG a further $100 for delivery at the other end for the GIFT that I had sent them. So we paid OVER $200 for delivery for a camera that in theory costs only $646. Somewhere someone is ripping us off and I am bitterly disappointed with AMAZON. Next time I'm going to AVOID AMAZON SUPER SAVER DEALS and go down to the local market instead and save some myself some money. The $646 camera ended up costing us almost $1,000 definitely a con and definitely not value for money.Sorry Amazon but you've just lost a customer.

This is my fourth Nikon DSLR body, so there is a big comfort factor for me with compatibility for Nikon flash, Nikon lenses, and user interface protocols. Image quality is slightly but noticeably better than the D5000. I've had it for two weeks, and have been enjoying the effects options and high ISO performance. No-brainer snapshots are readily accessible in AUTO mode, and low light performance is quite good with the 35mm f1.8 lens. For the price, this is outstanding.

Once I received a camera that wasn't faulty, I was happy! (The first one had to be returned as the menu settings did not work).I upgraded from a D40 and like all the extra features this camera has.

To be fair, after two weeks playing with it and now comparing it to a newly arrived D7000, I have to say that for non-technical shooting and general snap-shots, this is a nice little camera. In most cases, its photos are indestiguishable from the D7000, and that is the bottom-line in 95% of the cases. Both cameras outperform anything Nikon has put out in the prosumer range prior to this. I loved my D90 and used it more than my D300, which I now only use for studio work, or when I might get banged-up in the field. The D7000 performs better than the D300 and it's lighter. The D5100 is still close, but with such limited options, it just isn't as versatile or adaptable as the others.I got a tongue-lashing for caring about a depth of field button, but professionals use selective focus a lot! The focus array on the D5100 seems adequate, but I found two situations today where the D7000 did a better job. I'm going to take both bodies out to shoot aspen and the rut tomorrow. We'll see how they do in a real work situation. I'll probably use the D5100 for wide angle and macro shots. I'll use the D7000 for big, fast lenses that might be too much for a plastic body.I haven't tried movie mode or some of the other features of either camera. The "special effects" menu looks like toyland, and I doubt anyone serious about photography would use them.This is a decent camera. I like its size, but not its handling, even with a vertical grip. The "Live View" is not particularly impressive, especially outdoors in the sun. The 16 MP feature is overkill in most situations. After 10MP, more is not necessarily better...unless you have very special purposes. We just tend to be memory gluttons on electronics in general. I have a 65" TV and past 1900 or maybe, 2400 pixels, it's overkill. When was the last time you printed a 30'X40" print?In the end, it is what it is...A nice, simple camera that takes decent photos without a lot of hassle.
