PROS:It's a good photo camera and takes great low light photos without a flash.Has lots of manual controls easily accessable with buttons and knobs rather than menu driven choices.CONS:It's big and heavy. If you are use to a SLR then perhaps this doesn't matter to you. But if you are like me, wanting a better digital camera with good low light capabilities, you'll be shocked at the size and bulk.I don't like that you have to flip a switch to get to the screen to take pictures. I'm use to using a screen as a viewfinder and like it better because it works better with glasses than having to look into a little view finder.It does not focus as well in the screen viewfinder mode as it does when you use the built in viewfind. I've tried comparing the two in numerous lighting situations and get similar results but is worse in low light settings.It is noisy as the mirror flips around. Again SLR people will not notice this but I do and this makes it difficult to be discreet at a concert or somewhere that is very quite when taking the photo.A real big show stopper for me was the fact that it does not do 30 frames per second in the video mode at 1080p resulution. It only does 24 FPS. You have to drop down to 720p to get 30 FPS. This is unacceptable to me as to why a camera loaded with this much technology cannot do at least 30 FPS at 1080p.This was a christmas gift and I liked playing with the camera for a couple of weeks to evaluate it. Like I said it's a good camera for SLR people wanting to switch from film to digital and you don't mind shooting videos at 720 p, but it's going back. I plan on purchasing the Sony NEX-5R with a pancake lense in it's place. It will cost a couple hundred more but do exactly what I want it to do at less than half the weight and bulk.

Great camera for anyone looking for a DSLR. I bought this Camera after alot of review. There was two reasons I bought this one was price the second was package. it was a good price and packaged with both lens made a good deal for my picture taking. I have a Nikon 35mm with 3 lens and all kind of accessories. which is obsolete now but still a number one camera. Nikon is a good name in cameras. This is not the top end in cameras but does the trick for me easy to use controls in the right place and if you try to keep up with top end you will be buying every week. Amazon had the best price and quick ship

My old 'A' school instructor is a NPS professional w/Nikon in the Northeast. I chose this digital camera over a Canon because of it's 1080p enhanced movie. Nikon is also a robust and decent brand of camera.

I purchased the d3100 from Amazon after a lot of research and discussion with friends that own various DSLRs. Despite opinions, there aren't that many differences between Canon and Nikon at this level of camera. I believe it comes down to the features that you want, the included accessories and the best deal. In the end, this package was the clear winner. I also was able to get a free 16gb card and a nice basic case and my first impressions of outdoor landscape shots and indoor action shots are excellent. My most basic advice is DO NOT purchase a camera based on megapixels alone. If you are looking for a great entry level DSLR, with a great package of accessories, look no further. For under $500, you can't beat it!

I'm unable to "zoom" in photo on monitor viewer to check clarity, etc. Could not find instructions to do same in CD reference manual. Manual a little confusing. Overall, a pretty good camera for the price.

Mine included a 300mm lens. I use it for bird (and some scenic) photography and it has been very good. Have taken it to Chesapeake Bay salt marshes, Merritt Island and Canaveral seashore, Mississippi River migration hotspots, the Gulf Coast, Lake Huron, Whitefish Bay, the Lake Erie freshwater marshes and the Appalachians and it has been all I would ask for - almost. The one downer is that it doesn't have the advanced focusing system (a la Canon D5 and D7) which makes photography birds in flight a LOT easier and more productive.

I have not yet fully utilized the camera but so far it is fabulous. Planning a trip soon so should give it a real workout.

This kit does the job for my needs. I am not a professional but this has made me feel like one. As I learn more, I know I will outgrow it but I plan to keep the lenses in my arsenal.

I haven't had this camera for long, but as of right now:Pros: Takes great pictures, the color is very true to real life color. Human & fur kid subjects are so detailed in the pictures & show every whisker, hair, e.g. - - really outstanding.Cons: I hate that you can only use a battery pack with this, because the charge doesn't seem to last long for me (like 2 hours is all I get). You can only use a Nikon battery pack because it has a chip inside that communicates with the camera; had I known this, I would have not purchased this camera, because the charge doesn't last long enough, & I don't like being pushed into buying their expensive battery only! I prefer regular batteries or rechargeable ones. The powerex rechargeable batteries I used in my canon power shot always lasted for about 2 weeks if not longer with taking pictures almost every day. I recommend going ahead & buying another battery pack to use while the other charges, or when you’re out on vacation or any other activities you may want pictures of.

This is my first DSLR. I have had it for more than a year now, and it works well for me. I am an amateur photographer. I have taken some great photos with it, and the images are great. I can't talk about technical aspects, but I did get a 55-300mm lens as well, and its good to have the versatility.

I got this camera for my class and is a good camera, the only thing a see is tha is little slow wen u use the automatic lens but is good for a beginners.

Apesar de ter ficado um pouco triste pois a Nikon logo depois lançou a D3200 com recurso wi-fi, continuo a desfrutar minha camera que já se pagou pelos trabalhos fotograficos que já fiz com ela.Amazing camera, despite feel sick with Nikon because, few months later released the model D3200 with wi-fi option. Anyways, I loved my camera. I taked pics in my trip to Brasil and now living in Costa Rica working and some photos, my camera is already payed.

We bought this to take more/better pictures of all of the events we wanted to capture. This has been doing a great job. We brought it to Italy for pictures on the honeymoon and came back with some fantastic shots that turned into a photobook for family and friends to read.The supplied lens provides good versatility for all kinds of shots. The settings are pretty straight forward and most of the time we leave it on auto and it comes out looking great.Much improved over the typical smart phone photos that we took before this came along.

Learning to enjoy the camera and still just investigating all of it's potential, but enjoying it as I stated before.

Pros:- Excellent pictures (duh)- great battery life (full day, 200+ shots)- light weight, lighter than the D5000Cons:These aren't necessarily negatives about the camera or kit, just more of general FYIs:- Short focal length lens. The 18-55 lens is common on most kits and works fine for indoor or wide-angle shots. However you'll quickly want to add a lens that will focus out beyond the 55mm capability. I got this to start taking professional style pictures and its great! it has a built in guide that helps you get the settings you want for specific lighting, etc.Would recommend to all new photographers and even experienced ones if you want great quality shots

The Nikon D3100 camera's body is light and beautifully finished. It has all the features I want and its lenses fit quickly and easily. Extra lenses, filters and tubes are available at inexpensive prices. The viewfinder and rear panel of the camera is very clear with all options visible. Certain features like auto-focus can be tuned on and off easily. For the price the Nikon D3100 is very reasonable and I love it. My order was expedited quickly and safely. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I have used Nikons for at least 20 years, film then digital. This is the first one that has failed me. First the auto focus stopped working, then it would not transfer pictures, now the settings are locked and cannot be changed. I updated the software, air cleaned the contacts, pressed reset a dozen times, removed and replaced the battery, on and on. Finally contacted Nikon who said it needs to be sent in for repair. But, mine is out of warranty now so I really doubt I will send it in.Checking the internet I find many people have problems with this model. It's too bad, while it worked I loved it.I really hope Nikon has not succumbed to profit over quality and mine was just a lemon, but too I urge people not to buy this model.

This is my first SLR so I'm not a camera snob. But it does what I need it to do at a nice price. Generally pretty happy with this refurb.
