This was my first DSLR camera ever. I learned how to use it efficiently and take great pictures within a few days. It's not that great in lowlight but it it still a great camera and I highly recommend it. the picture quality is phenomenal and it's perfect for old and new DSLR owners.

Just perfect for what i was looking for. ive been doing photography for a couple of years already and this camera is really good.

Got here fast, and I love it! its been working very good for me. The only thing is that the flash got ruined, apparently they have a batch that had that problem after N shots.

Use it almost every week and like the older one I have - love it! Easy to use, battery lasts, and love the photos.

Bought this camera a year ago, have had trouble with blurry pictures since the purchase. Tried reading many different discussion forums on the subject. It is not due to holding the camera improperly or expecting more from it, or dirty lens or sensor. I think I finally figured it out. I had to turn off auto-focus assist in the menu and also turn the switch on the lens to Manual. I'm not sure which one did it, but I'm leaving it alone. Maybe I got a bad camera, or maybe the auto focus assist is just crap on this thing, but if it's the latter, expect to be in manual focus mode for a clear picture. I know a professional photographer, and she said flat out that this camera is terrible. Again, mine could be defective. My Sony DSC H50 took amazing pictures, and I guess that I was expecting even better pics since stepping up to a DSLR camera....But no. I want another Sony, and when this one is old or I come into some money to make a camera a priority, I will be getting another Sony.

For people looking for new DSLR camera, stop, this is it. It has none of the D3000 drawbacks: Fast buffer, never overloaded. When intentionally overloaded by myself on continous shots, it will clear the buffer very fast(ADL on if you're wondering). Image sensitivity at high ISO is great acording to random reviwes, but I'm still waiting a prof test. But think about it, on Auto ISO the range goes to 3200 - WOW, and I can't see any noise. You can shoot everything with it, but you need a flash - SB 400 will do.Cool stuf:You can take photos from the liveview LCD screen. I shot a few movies and seem great, in focus most of the time. I don't care much about video, I have a video camera HD.You can still set AUTO ISO from the menu and set minimum shutter speed. Downside is you cannot override the AUTO ISO in any mode including Manual. You have to change it back to off from menu and than loose time figuring out which is the best ISO/aperture/shutter speed.For shortcomings, I have to look hard but here they are:(BTW I've been using it daily for 1 week)1. LCD sceen has a lower resolution and one cannot see if the foto taken is slightly out of focus - bummer, but they have to save some features for the D5100.2. No bracketing - who brackets anymore? 3 pics of each just to be 100% sure seems a waste of memory card and time (deleting the other2. We are talking about exposure bracketing, not focus bracketing BTW.)3. ADL only on or off - lol, if you really are worried about small shadows and highlits you can always add more ADL from the retouch menu in the camera, after you take the photo. Or on photoshop or iPhoto etc. On is plenty for the prosumer ;)4. Easy to get image out of focus: one can change the focus point from the screen by pressing the arrows from the OK ring. You use the OK ring a lot and if the LCD screen has returned to ready to shoot position and you press the ring one more time(goof) the image now focuses to the right/left/up/down depending on what you pressed. Combined with a low resolution LCD in the hands of a beginer = out of focus images. Just pay attention.I'm still waiting for standard high ISO tests to confirm my love for this camera. Best camera for travelers, no questions. If you want more get ready to bend your neck hauling close to 2 lbs of gear. Not me. BTW buy the 35mm 1.8 lens for low light/no flash IT BLOWS YOUR MIND.*Update 1 year later:I downgraded the rating from 5 to 3 stars. I have beed using my camera for one year now and I wanted to sell it.1. Unknown to us initially there is an problem with the sensor's software: it overexposes the pictures frecvently on auto ISO, especially in difficult light situations with high contrast. Nikon's response was that it is not an error but rather they changed the algorithm which calculates exposure on purpose. They wanted a good camera for low light. What happens in practice is that on Auto ISO (which most people use) the camera will push the ISO very high even in bright sun (will do 400-1600 ISO !!). Huge issue - burnt highlights - no way to recover it (maybe bracketing is missed after all: Worse off, the problem is the same with the D7100 and to a lesser degree D5100 (acording to reviews). NIKON, NIKON...Why did you change the algorithm????????? Updates to original camera software do not fix the problem - it is not considered a problem by Nikon. My next camera will be a Cannon T2i or whatever will be available from that series. It is more expensive but now it's worth it given this exposure issue. The only solution I found,a compromise, is to limit the range of auto ISO from 100 to say 200 or 400. This pretty much makes high ISOs useless and guess what ISOs your photo's will have? The max ISO you set.2. The LCD is moderately scratched and blurry from whear which adding to the low resolution - yep, hard to see if picture is in focus. I did not overuse the camera or abuse it. I am an amateur photographer and I wear it on my side (over shouder) or across - so there is allways rubbing with the clothes. And I'm not using the standard Nikon strap (which is too short for comfort and slides off your shouder) rather the smaller UP strap (which is great).I didn't want to write the upadate initailly but I felt it is my responsability not to mislead but inform everyone about what I know (which is not much). This camera is everything that I was hoping it would be when I first ordered it. It's held up good since I purchased it and I can't believe the naturally beautiful shots I've been able to take with it. I plan on buying a second one so I can convert one of the cameras into shooting purely infrared. I've managed to convince a few friends and family members to take a leap on this DSLR and they haven't regretted going through with it. If you're looking for a starter DSLR with an affordable price and great reliability, I think this is the camera for you! The battery life on the camera is pretty impressive as I've gotten days of use out of it before needing to recharge. The weight feels fine and I've felt comfortable taking it around with me in some physically demanding areas. And as I said before, I've been stunned by some of the shots I've been able to get with it.

I wanted a reasonably priced camera to take photos at sporting events. I did my research and this camera came highly recommended. So far it has delivered as promised. I'm glad I bought it.

.Hooking up the camera to an outlet to shoot without battery required too many connections and and also expensive.Other than that a great camera that feels like the old slrs..

The camera was all it was described to be. Bought it for my wife and she is very happy with it. Will recommend this to anyone.

The camera has many features and is easy to use, but a product that requires a SIM card for use should include one!!! Imagine the disappointment of opening a Christmas present that can't be used without making a trip to the store.

... and it is a little small for my hands. But it is light. I owned A-series SONY DSLR and so far very impressed. Noob like me must have a built-in guide. Live view is excellent. Stock optics are good, may be a little slow, but I actually start to like manual mode. Yet to try it out, just ran some prelimenary tests to figure what's what... and I actually enjoyed my experience. Buttons are placed just right by me. And I totaly feel like this is a win over D3200 for $100 more.

I have taken this camera all over the United States and it has performed wonderful. It is very easy to use. So far, I have had no issues with it. I bought a very good case to keep it in; a good case is the life of a good camera.

I have always been a frustrated photo-phile in that, because of eye issues I often cannot focus properly when squinting through a view finder, even while using the diopter adjustment (which the D3100 has, of course)- but the Silent Wave auto focus on this camera is wonderful. I can frame the subject, allow the auto focus to do it's job (in many specialized manners [read the manual]), and I get spectacular images!!! This is a great introductory level DSLR camera for most anyone. The PASM modes function exactly the same as on the ultra high end of DSLR cameras. I really am inspired!

So, this camera does lack so advanced controls, such as a shooting mirror lock up mode. But, for someone who is looking to explore photography as a hobby, I would HIGHLY recommend this camera. It's controls are streamlined and very easy to learn. You will be changing setting without removing your eye from the viewfinder in no time! If you shoot frequently, you will grow out of the 18-55mm AF-S lens very quickly. Once you get a few semi-pro lenses in your bag, you will be shooting like a pro. The high amount of megapixels with help you have the ability to crop the photos in post-processing and still be able to enlarge them without losing quality. It is't as durable as the high end model so be careful. NEVER DROP IT, do NOT use in rain. These tip may seem intuitive, but you'd be surprised.

As soon as I got this in the mail,I started to take pictures! I'm so glad that I bought this lens! I'm just getting to know my camera by taking all kind of pictures and it's so easy to use. If you are a amateur like me this is a good lens to start with and camera. It's light to carry around and so easy to use!

Great starter camera to get a feel for things. Especially if you like to shoot as a hobby. This camera lets you explore many options without breaking the bank.

I stepped up from a D50 to the D3100. It has enough features to satisfy me but I use it generally for eBay photos and family pictures.

I must confess that this is the best product I have bought in Amazon.Very goo, resistant cam.all elements need to be aplaussed

Just wish we had a paper manual that was clear on the camera talk so even beginners could understand how to use it

I want a camera, so after driving my brother crazy he recommend this one, very easy to use and for a newbie like me it works great. I recommend this product who love to take pictures.

I have purchased unfortunately to many cameras!! This is my last one easy use for a beginner and I am very excited about 3 pictures per second for my kids sporting events crystal clear!!

Chose this unit because my daughter and her sister-inlaw have it and us it extensively. The pictures they take are fantastic. I will be heading to Africa in the spring and it will be put to good use.
