I bought this item and spent days trying to get it to work with Vista. My pc has over 3 megs of RAM in it and from what I've gathered this product will not work with any VISTA PCs that have 2 or more megs of RAM in them. Avoid the headache. I am going to try Buffalo Technology's product.

I do notice that this USB adapter picks up about 1/4 of the available wireless network in the vicinity compared to my MacBook, but connecting is a breeze and i am very happy with this bargain thus far.

Just about the only thing good about this unit is how easy it is to setup. This AP is not worth paying extra for. I have personally demoted this "business class" AP to home use...which sadly doesn't even perform well in such conditions where multiple wireless stations are present in the environment (as with all multi-dwelling unit/condos)...even when it is literally less than 20 ft away. Contant constant connect/disconnects make it extremely unreliable. The "auto-cell" feature, which was a major reason for purchase, is deprecated. New firmware doesn't even have it (non-existent in the v2 release of this product).I'm not saying this unit doesn't work, it does, but it offers nothing more than a standard AP costing much much less. There are some features such as VLANs and maybe if that's a key requirement, then it can work for you (v2 models). However, if you're looking for performance/reliability basics in "harsh" environments, you will do just as good, or poorly, with any other "standard" home use AP.

I can not comment on the speed as I didn't make any specific tests, but it seems fast. At least as fast as my cable internet connectino speed. But what is REALLY fast, is the set up. In less than a couple of minutes I was online. Very good! Full marks!

I've had this router for a year or so, and I keep it very busy. Those that have posted bad reviews may have known what they were doing, but your success with this or any wi-fi router depends a bit on the compatibility with the wireless cards you are using. In my case, I found out the chipset in this router is Atheros, so I bought a wireless card with that same chipset, an 802.11a/b/g combo card. The same chipset in the card and the router means I get rock-solid connectivity, and it NEVER drops. This is the first "good" wireless connection I've had, and I've tried several miniPCI and PC cards (miniPCI) with several different routers (Linksys, D-Link, netgear). Having 802.11a is great - the speed and range is plenty adequate for my needs (all over the house and on the patio), and I can use 2.4GHz phones and they wont interfere with the network (802.11b/g uses 2.4GHz range and can cause decreased range/speed). The Netgear WGU624 does a great job!

I am between Mac Book Pros and wanted to add wireless to an old iBook with no airport card. A card for this costs between $US80 and $US150. i was about to bite the bullet when I did some research and found drivers for this adapter on the Realtek website, maker of the chipset, http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/It works best on PPC Mac right up to the latest OS. I have had no problems. The GUI app from Realtek is not the best designed but for the price its ok. I have used it on a secured and unsecured, and both Mac and PC networks. Be sure to get WG111v2 which uses the chipset from Realtek.

June 3, 2005: While I was pleased with the router in the beginning, my WGT624v2 has been giving me wireless connectivity problems for months.I have been having a problem where I am getting high response times (high pings) only on my 2 wireless computers. My wired computers work fine.NETGEAR customer support has had me change many settings and tried to get me to start getting their "Premium Support" (i.e. fee based support). I will throw the router away before I spend $33 for 30 minutes of support. At the request of NETGEAR support, most settings have been reduced to minimal operations, including not running in either 108mbps mode and just using the basic b and g settings which doesn't give me 108mbps. I have even disabled aireless security. Everything ran well in this mode (with NO 108mbps) for nine days.I then switched to "108mbps only" mode and after 2 days I started to get high pings on only my 2 wireless computers.I will spend another week or so testing and if NETGEAR won't give me a new router then I will go buy another one to test. If it works, then I will return the old one to NETGEAR with or without an RMA. If the new router does the same thing, then I plan to return it and go buy another brand. I will post my results.Customer support needs to be more responsive.June 13, 2005: It appears that the advertised wireless rate of 108mbps is just a THEORECTICAL RATE and the device doesn't even come close. So if you are like me and want the speed of WIRED and think this will do it - WRONG.ALso, to get their "108mbps" rate you need to use NETGEAR routers AND adapters or you will just be able to get the "54mbps" rate. Also, I can't get the router to work in "108mbps" mode without disconnects and high pings. I bought another NETGEAR WGT624 router to test and it dropped the network after 2 days and again in about an hour - apparently due to overheating. I returned that one. To even try another vendor's 108mbps gear I would be forced to replace my router and the 3 pc adapter cards. As a package, the NETGEAR 108mbps items are not what I thought I was getting. Although, it did work well in "g and b" (54mbps or less) mode but not at all in "Super g" (108mbps) mode.I am now in the process of fishing wire through my house to get to the wireless computers. I will then TURN OFF WIRELESS and use wires to obtain the 100mbps rate that wires can support.December 31, 2005I now have wires run to four computers, so my need for wireless has greatly deminished. I need wireless for PSP and Xbox devices as well as visitors with laptops. When I do need wireless access, I have found that the router loses connectivity when I use WPA security. So I now allow wireless access based on MAC address and have shut off WPA. The router is extremely stable running in b and g mode only and with WPA off. It's sort of a lousy way to operate a router. It's my workaround until I purchase a next generation router, which will NOT be from Netgear. If I were to buy a router today it would be the Belkin F5D8230-4 Wireless 802.11x Pre-N Router.

I purchased 3 of these adapters for different users. Each user had constant connection problems. Since I wasn't sure at first if the problem was the adapter or the router, I replaced one of the adapters with an internal PCI wireless ethernet card. The connection problems went away for that user.In addition to really lousy connections, the adapter overheats. It gets so hot, you can hardly touch it. This strikes me as a fire hazard.Avoid it, if you can.

This product is absolutely terrible. It will not work with Vista. It gives you the blue screen of death, and has a dialup + connection. It's got broadband speeds but disconnects from the wireless network just like a dialup connection. It kills hard drives by making Vista freeze up. Vista is unstable because of this piece of junk which overheats and disconnects from the network.

Highly recommended router.Don't fall for this Netgear knocking because you're not seeing comments from happy customers.I bought this router from Amazon. The first one was DOA but I have never had a DOA Netgear router before and I've been installing WIFI professionally since 2000 for home and business (Netgear and any other brands you can think of).Netgear support was extremely responsive. That was a 10 minute call. Exchange with Amazon was smooth but of course it's a hassle packing the thing up and mailing it.Got replacement and as I expected it is an awesome router and solved my connection problems in every room of a 4 story house. I've never had anyone complain to me about this router. I've installed over 20 of them for different customers before and after I bought my own. The lack of problems is why I bought it for myself. If you have issues with your connection get yourself a Netgear WPN511 card or desktop adapter to go with this router.Note: Don't expect to see 108Mbps speed because you won't see it. 54 Mbps is the typical speed. Have found that trying to change WIFI strength or speed settings at the router is not worth the trouble.

So far I'm pretty happy with my RangeMax Access Point. It covers every area of my house and and works great with the PowerLine ethernet adapters I just bought. The setup of the access point was not as easy as it could have been, though. The instructions require you to go through a fairly strange process of connecting the access point to a single computer set up with a fixed IP address. This is not so hard to do, really, if you have any experience with setting up networking, but for an inexperienced user this could be difficult. Also, very strangely, once I had my access point all set up and working and connected to the rest of my network, I could no longer reach the setup screens using the IP address given in the instructions. If I need to change my setup, it looks like I'll have to hit the tiny reset button and start over. One other complaint is that the wall wart that powers this thing is a monster! It must weigh two pounds. If I had that sucker plugged directly into a wall socket, I'd be worried about the plugs coming loose over time because of the weight. I strongly recommend that you plug this into a powerstrip or extension such that it lays flat on the ground so that all that weight is not pulling on the plugs. One further complaint--the flashing blue light everyone else complains about here is pretty silly if you want your access point to be unobtrusive. And the plastic cover they include in the packaging is a joke--clearly an afterthought in the design process. It's a flimsy little disk with a sticker on it. Very silly.Still, once I got the thing set up, the RangeMax Access Point worked great, and that's the important thing. These other issues are small and easy to deal with.

This card makes the CPU usage go to and remain at 80% when it's plugged in. Research on the web tells me I'm not alone in this yet there is no known fix. I had problems with Netgear drivers years ago. I just tried the latest driver, months after buying the card (so they've had time to fix bugs) and it didn't change anything. Sluggish performance, constant calling out to DNS (other cards don't so why would this ione need to?)ZERO starts, unusable but not heavy enough to be a doorstop. I will never buy Netgear products again.

I just have to smile at some of the terrible information some people, who havemn't really read the instruction and don't really know what they are doing with this card. The BIGGEST thing to kmnow about this great card is NOT TO INSTALL IT UNTIL YOU INSTALL THE NETGEAR SOFTWARE ! This is with XP P2 home.Read the instructions.Don't mess with the Windows software at all. Remember that Rangemax, like all "Extended G" formats aer proprietary, and thefore, alwayas use the Netgard software.1. Put the CD in and install software.2. Do a shutdown.3. Install the PCI Rangemax Adapter - WPN311.4. Bring the system back up.5. The sofware will immediately greet you after XP comes up. Then go through selecting the wireless router to connect to. Make sure the settings are coordinated with the router. Always a goo idea to have some security on it,like encryption, that would have to be initiated from the Router.6. To maximize the use of the "Rangmax" features of the adaptor card, make sure that you have purchased a Netgear Rangemax router to take advantage of the Rangemax "enhanced G" features.I have a Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router (WPN824)and it is working great with the Netgear Rangmaz adapters.7. I am purchasing another adapter, but I can tell you the two I have, are connected to XP SP 2 PCs that are on another floor, at two ends of the room downstairs and they are runing at a solod 108mbs. I have noot have to restart the router or the adapters. No more cables. I personally am right next to the router and my Cable modem, so I am connected to one of the four ethernet ports, and my connection works smoother and faster than my Linksys Ethernet router I was using before. No need for signal enhancers, additional anthing.FOLLOW THE DIRECTION, LITTERALLY AND REMEMBER TO LOAD THE CD AND NETGEAR SOFTWARE FIRST, BEFORE INSTALLING THE PCI CARD.I learned that the hard way, although it was higlighted in the documentation.

During the installation of the software on my PC running Windows 2000 Server, the installation program froze my PC completely. I had to turn off the PC, and now it does nothing when I turn it on. The lights on the front light up, but nothing happens at all. I called Netgear, waited on hold for 15 minutes, and then was connected to a gentleman whose English was not very good. I explained my problem about 5 times before he seemed to get it. He told me that the problem is that the product is not compatible with Win 2000 Server. I told him that I had never before encountered a piece of software that ran on 2000 Pro, but not 2000 Server (perhaps there are some), but he insisted that this was the case. I explained that, typically, installation programs that encounter and incompatible operating system would display a message to the user, and exit, rather than freezing and disabling the computer, but he held firm, and advised me that there was nothing he could do to help, and that he recommended that I contact my computer vendor so that they could restore my initial configuration.I went around and around with this fellow, then finally asked for his supervisor. After another 15 minutes on hold, another guy came on the line, who was pretty fluent in English. He explained his understanding of the situation, which was still wrong, and I explained the whole thing again to him. He had me turn the computer on and off, which of course I had already done several times, and check the monitor connection. After this analysis, he determined that the situation could not possibly have been the result of the frozen software installation that occurred just prior to it, and must be some other problem with my PC that had previously been working perfectly, that, coincidently, occurred at the exact same time as the software freeze. I expressed skepticism towards this explanation, and asked him if he would believe that if it was his PC. He said that absolutely he would, and reassured me that there was NO POSSIBLE WAY, (emphasis his) that his software could have caused these symptoms.Since I understood that it would be difficult for him to actually fix a computer in this state over the phone, I suggested that I could take it to a local technician, and send Netgear the bill for repairing my system. He declined that offer. So, at the end of the day, I'm left with a dead PC, but, according to Netgear, a perfectly good wireless card and installation CD.No more Netgear for me, thank you!

I bought this product (and paid a premium for it) last April, largely based on the excellent online reviews and its fast, long-range wireless capability. It has been a major disappointment. The only way I've been able to use it reliably is by disabling its wireless support and using only the (wired) ethernet ports. I've only been able to get the wireless port working intermittently for one of three of my PCs (two notebooks and a desktop). It either repeatedly drops and reconnects -- even at 15 feet away (Dell Inspiron 8200 w/ 802.11b) or connects for two minutes then locks up the router (Toshiba Portege M400 w/ 802.11g). I am a software engineer and am very patient with technology, but this device has tested my limits. I've tried many forms of "black magic" over countless hours (firmware, software, and driver updates, OS/Network settings, disabling firewalls/anivirus, online support, etc. etc.) but all to no avail. To top things off, I couldn't even couldn't get Netgear's own RangeMax Wireless PCI card to connect from my desktop PC. I've been cut by this "bleeding edge" technology, and now must find a wireless router that actually works.

I bought my unit in February, 2006. It no longer works. Simply put, it does what others have said--breaks down after about 15 months. Mine just died a day or two ago. I have little hope that Netgear will do anything to replace it. I now have to look for another solution for extending the range of my wireless system. I'll keep looking, you should too.Let the buyer beware!

Purchasing wireless is hit and miss. We missed with several linksys products but hit well with netgear WN802T rangemax next access point and WPN111 usb adaptor at 54mb using wpa-psk in a concrete/drywall, warehouse/office environment with a lot of noise that even 100mb cat5 wire cant connect over 20ft. Lots of wireless traffic here but no problems with connection. Workstations are on 24 hours a day and can get real hot when ac off. WPN111 has had no overheat problems and not one dropped connection yet. Consistent excellent strength. Very happy with WPN111. We are also happy with netgear WGPS606 bridge which we use to bridge wireless to wire, to connect linux and sun computers and unix printers with no (working) wireless drivers. Netgear WG111 usb 54mb adaptor was a total loser with no connection or consistent dropped connections. Its amazing how widespread these performance issues are even with the same manufacturer. We tried dlink wireless 108g stuff, but it was not reliable enough for us to be comfortable with. Would drop connection from time-to-time even though strength was excellent. We do use dlink cable/dsl router (firewall has real packet filtering, not just port forwarding) and switches which works great. Did not like netgear or linksys routers.

There is simply no driver for this adapter to connect to an access point with WPA2 turn on. If you are only connecting with WEP it's OK. You get what you paid for.----------As FilG pointed out the manufacturer does noted that this device is only "Hardware-based 40/64-bit & 128-bit WEP encryption". Add back 2 stars to this rating.

There are severe bugs in the firmware and possibly the hardware. I went through 4 RMAs with Netgear before giving up on the product. Technical support was great but engineering just couldn't come through with a fix. Look at the forums before purchasing to make sure that the issues have been addressed.

This works very well with my Netgear Rangemax wireless router. I replaced an older D-Link Wireless Router and find I get better results by staying with the same brand for both sending and receiving signals. Of course, like all wireless devices you have to try many positions to reach over 80 feet. I will eventually switch to the newer "N" equipment once it has been available of a couple of years.
