Easy to install, even for a techno-idiot? Totally. Easy to use? It was better than pre-installed or even integrated webcams I've had in the past. Vid quality? Up there with the best. This is like getting Windows after years of using DOS (if anyone remembers that a$$-pain). This is totally intuitive, works great out of the box and does what it says it will do. I'm techically pretty competent (forensic computing is a big part of my business) but not awfully patient with fiddly hardware. THIS is what plug-n-play means to me. Good stuff.

The camera and software were easy to install and the HD video quality is good -- better than the webcam that's built into my laptop. My issue is with the useless attachment system of the webcam. One of the main features I selected it for was that it could, supposedly, be attached to a laptop or a computer monitor. It really doesn't work well for either. I found a little clamp at a hardware store that holds it in place on my husband's laptop, but won't work with my desktop monitor. When I set the webcam on my monitor, it is not secure and will either fall off and cannot really be positioned well.

In a webcam I am not necessarily looking for video camera quality. I want to be able to transmit a clear image that focuses well. My demands are on the low side, so an inexpensive webcam is what I am looking for. This lifecam fits the bill. At the price of this camera I get a clear image that is in focus and with the color adjust, looks nice. As with more of these peripherals the installation is easy and once installed you just forget about it. I would highly recommend this web cam for those with general needs.

What can I say, the price was right and it works as advertised. I use it primarily with Skype but with the good resolution, I can use it for videos and stills.

I love this cam, it has been great while my sister is away for the army and her 2 toddlers are with me, so they get to see their mom and talk to her. The Mic is awesome, great clarity, volume. I would totally recommend this camera to someone, in fact we are getting one for my in-laws.

Web cams aren't that exciting. When you plug it into a Windows 7 machine and it just works, and its obvious how it rests on top of your laptop screen, its pretty much done everything its designed to do. No complaints.

In all this is one of the most compact and least expensive cameras on the market with which to perform simple video conferencing with Skype. Skype detects and uses this camera automatically. The picture and sound are more than adequate for my purposes. My only real complaints are;1) as noted by others, the clip is a bit flimsy, but works well on my Dell D620, and Samsung desktop 19" monitor (sort of).2) The silly button in the top of the camera that seems to get pushed every time I try to adjust the position of the camera... this button relentlessly prompts you to install Microsoft Messenger. Perhaps if I wanted MS Messenger this would be fine, but I don't... I want to use Skype which is far more of an worldwide standard for teleconferencing. This button is a useless and annoying feature. I may ultimately open the camera and disconnect the switch.

Just ordered this off Amazon from Retail Killer and received it today. I have never had a webcam before but own some great quality digital slr cameras, so I wasn't expecting that great of a feed or still picture. But this camera is great quality for the price. I think it would be great for keeping in touch with loved ones overseas or across the states. I didn't detect any lag at all. I would also recommend using Skype with this, I tried Yahoo IM & Skype, and Skype seemed to have the best quality. There was a little feedback from the mic a few times, but I have a feeling that it was caused by the other users webcam/separate mic set up. This noise can also be diminished by muting the mic, then reactivating it fyi, both users should do this if they experience any feedback. You really can't beat this webcam for the price. I paid 19.95 which included shipping & handling, when Best Buy as of today (10/07/2009) wants $63.99 for it (without shipping).One draw back that other people have mentioned is the clip, which I agree to. I don't know my monitor depth, but I do know it's bulky, and I did have to adjust it a bit to sit in place. But that's my fault for having a fat monitor. If you have a slim monitor, I don't believe the clip will be an issue at all.One person that gave a review said this webcam was huge, said it was like setting a mattress atop their PC. That's not true at all, and I was expecting this huge brick in the mail when I read that, only to find out it was pretty tiny. If you want a visual comparison, it's the size a of a cigarette lighter exactly (no bigger, no smaller in height & width). It has the thickness just under 2 lighters stacked.If you have any issues with lag, just try out the different programs (yahoo, aim, windows live, skype). My friend ordered a rocketfish webcam (with more mega pixels than mine) yet his lag was ridiculous on yahoo (up to 2 minutes delay) but on skype they both worked perfect combined. So you definitely want to try out the different chat programs to see what works best, you may end up assuming the quality is the camera, when in reality its the server you are using.I would also recommend if you order from Amazon, Retail Killer, due to the fast shipping. I was given a delivery date of Oct. 8th-14th. It arrived Oct. 7th, a day early.Very happy with this purchase!

As with all electronic products, they get trumped every 60 days.... I have used lots of these type cameras and the Image Quality is just OK on this, but then again, so is the price, so you get what you pay for in this product line.... at least there is a big name behind it...

While it's true that you get what you pay for, I was surprised at how easy to use this camera was for its price. It installed just with Plug and Play so there was no software needed, no drivers to download, etc.As for picture quality, it's alright. Not amazing... and not as good as the on-board camera on my other laptop. Still, it's more than adequate for our purposes which is to just have a quick cam we can use for skype while I'm traveling.There was occasionally a little bit of lag; however, that could have been because I was using it to do video skype with my 4 year old son who was in the room next to me. :)It's also nice that the camera is small, which makes it easy to travel with.All in all, for somebody who needs an inexpensive web cam (and no microphone), this is a good choice.

I followed the instruction to install the software and connect the webcam. But the image I got from the webcam flickered, regardless of which messenger I used (e.g., Windows Live, Gmail, and Skype). I went to Microsoft's support website and downloaded the update, which did not solve the problem. I do not recommend this webcam; the sound quality is not consistent either. Also, I bought it from a third party here, which made it impossible to return. The third party company had very strict return policies. Always buy from Amazon; it has a really friendly return policy.

I liked this camera it had a great resolution and everything is perfect the sound, the video quality and i really liked this product, but my only problem is that after using it for like 5 times my video doesn't work no matter how many times i reinstall the software the video is just not showing and i don't understand what is the problem. The audio is fine but the video just doesn't work and i don't know what else to do in order to solve this problem and i would hate to think that the camera doesn't work. I mean common used it like 5 times and the 5th time the video has stopped working

Purchased this for my mother so she can Skype with family. It works like a charm and installed very easily.-Windows 7 will detect and install drivers for this device automatically.-Video quality is lower than newer models, but for web chat... I don't think it is necessary.

I own a Lifecam VX-3000. When the VX-5500 came out, I jumped at the chance to compare.SOFTWAREThe directions clearly state to install the software first before connecting the USB cable. I promptly put the disc in, it began installing and then an error message telling me I need to be connected to the internet for installation. No problem. Anyone buying a webcam must surely have an internet connection. I connect to the internet and begin installation. I wait, and wait, and wait. It's installing. I wait. 10 minutes pass by. I decide something must be wrong. I discontinue installation. I check my operating system: Windows XP with service pack 3. That should be okay. Maybe it's the previous installation of LifeCam 1.4. Lifecam 2.0 must conflict. I try uninstalling 1.4 but it doesn't show up in that computer's menu of programs to uninstall. I plug in the webcam and it works with Skype. That's pretty much all my son uses it for, so it's fine.My other computer did the same thing upon installation. I was able to uninstall LifeCam 1.4 on that one but still no go for LifeCam 2.0. I call tech support. The guy says give it half an hour. I couldn't believe my ears. I had too keep asking him, "Really???" Yep. He told me to go to the website, it will be better. [..]. That was much better. Anyone need help installing this software go to the website and download from there. It didn't take half an hour, just a few minutes like it should have.Troubles installing aside, LifeCam 2.0 does not disappoint. It lets you record and send photos, audio and video at the touch of a button. I had fun playing around with the special effects. You can distort your image or add animals and scenery or dress yourself up. They made for some fun videos and photos.VIDEOThe video is crisp and clear. There is no problem with video. In bright conditions, it's great. In low light conditions, it's still good. There isn't the extreme graininess I sometimes see in webcams.AUDIOWhen compared to the VX-3000, VX-5500 audio shines. The VX-3000 audio was so poor, I added a microphone even though it came with one built in. The VX-5500 has one built in, too; but this one I can use! It's crisp and clear, no static and no need for any other microphone.AESTHETICS AND DESIGNThe faceplates are cute, but I prefer the look of the VX-3000 myself. Square isn't my thing and I'm not into all changing colors, although my son liked choosing. Changing the faceplates is easy enough, just snap on and off, no screwdrivers needed.The fold-up design does help with portability. If you need one to carry around, this one folds flat, unlike VX-3000.Pros:+software is fun and easy to use+video is crisp and clean+audio is clear, no static+faceplates for those who like to change colors+folds up for portabilityCons:-impossible to install software from disc. Love this webcam - it's exactly what I was looking for, exactly as described. It came with a convenient carrying pouch, is lightweight & so easy to use. It truly is plug & use the clip fits well on my relatively old laptop from work, and has allowed me to stay in touch with my family @ home while I was on a trip out if the country. I would recommend it, especially for the price!

Very good webcam for the price I payed ([...] w/free shipping). The clarity is great, microphone is very clear and picks up sound like a champ. Has spoiled my girlfriend in skype conversations. Only thing that irks me a bit about it is the microphone stays on when I don't want it to. I play WoW and use ventrilo quite a bit, and the microphone will stay on when out of any application that would run the webcam, and the microphone will pick up my voice along with my headset and make my voice echo loudly, so I've made it a habit to unplug the webcam whenever I'm not using it, which is slightly inconvenient but not a huge deal. Very very good webcam for the money I paid, if you can get it anywhere near that price I'd recommend you jump on the deal.

This is a solid, dependable product. Webcam that fits nicely in my pocket, in its cool little soft carrying case. Essentially a plug-n-play on all computers--didn't need to load any software to make it work.

When I moved across the country from the rest of my family, we all decided to get Skype so we could see each other on a regular basis. I bought this webcam since my computer didn't have on built in. It was really simple to install and works perfectly with my 2006 Toshiba laptop. The picture quality is significantly better than the camera my Sister bought and the built in microphone picks up noises much better than hers as well. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others.

I am thrill to buy such a very nice webcam at an affordable price. The box recommended using a Core-Duo CPU and up. But, my old Pentium IV 3.0GHz with HyperThread enabled and 3 GB of RAM can handle it just fine. My DSL Internet speed is only 3MB. The webcam is put together nicely and doesn't feel cheap. The USB cable from the webcam is about 6 ft long I think. It has a built in Mic on the camera. I use the free chat service at [...] for video chat. Chat up to five other people with no lost in picture quality or sound. Friend told me about it after I got frustrated with the video missing or choppy sound when using Messenger Chat and Skype.

We used to own a Logitech webcam. It quickly malfunctioned on us and was negatively impacting our computer. The Microsoft LifeCam is very user friendly and easy to install. The quality of picture and sound is also wonderful. The only downfall that we have experienced is as follows:After plugging in the webcam to the computer, it sometimes takes a while to decide that it wants to start running. The time frame is about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Not really a big deal, but it is something to note. Very good product though. Would buy it again. The price is wonderful what the product that you get.

Really a great product for the price. I bought it as a gift for my mothers laptop because her new laptop didn't come with a built in camera just a microphone.This thing fits great on most laptops with the adjustable back and clip.Picture quality is great for the price.Only con is that the USB cable is a bit short about 18 inches.but for 18 bucks its a great product. Don't listen to the bad reviews.

We bought a pair; it is ok if you are computer saavy, but if you are not, forget it. It was difficult getting my spouse on board. Software updates demand a new full install at each instance, which for some odd reason wanted to always be automatic. We finally turned off the automatic feature, and yes it is better to not enlarge the display. It's ok if you do not use it frequently, which we do not. So a good purchase for a casual user, but not recommended for professionals for daily usage.

I bought this for a home laptop so I could video chat with home while I was away for business. This little clip-on webcam got the job done very well. The video and audio quality were far superior to the built-in camera on my work laptop. Installation was easy, and the camera worked great with Skype, even though the packaging talks about MSN Messenger.The laptop is 5 years old, but the camera worked great, so you shouldn't have trouble with it on reasonably old hardware. If you're looking for very high image quality, then you should probably spend more, since this is really designed for casual use. Also, note that it's only designed for laptops, and there aren't any good ways to mount it to a desktop monitor, or even a way to place it on a table.Overall, definitely a good value, and I would buy it again.

My friends on Skype marvel at the picture, so much better than with the 1000. Problem is, I have to use an external microphone to broadcast my voice. I have contacted microsoft for help, Dell for help with Vista, both without any help or suggestions, and still the microphone in the 5500 will not work. It was worth it to get a better picture, but I am stumped about the voice.

We recently bought two Microsoft LifeCam VX-5500 webcams - one for us and one for my mom so that we can do online video calls with her and our daughters. After reading the reviews, we opted to not install any of the software that came with the cameras and are glad we did since they work beautifully without any additional software. I have XP on my laptop and my mom has Vista. My mom isn't very computer savvy so my younger brother set it up for her; however, she definitely could have done it herself - just would have needed a little extra coaching that my brother didn't need. Here are my favorite things about this product:- Easy set up with no software needed.- Perfect sound and video quality for online video calling.- Folds up quickly for easy storage.- Stays put on top of laptop screen easily without much effort.- Face plates make it more matchy-matchy depending on the look of ones computer.Overall, we have been completely satisfied with our purchase.

The Microsoft LifeCam NX-3000 is just the product that I needed to use Skype or similar products with my Dell Latitude Notebook. It attaches easily, has a microphone included and a travel case. It works quite well and I am pleased with it.

I first bought the VX-6000 and it works ok but my daughter calls me on Skype with no webcam so I got the VX-7000 and she used the VX-6000. The VX-7000 is focus free and needs more light but it is sharper with better frame rate. It had a nice heavy metal body and fits my LCD Screen. Since I already had lifecam software installed, I just plugged it in and was ready to go. Sound is not as full as the VX-6000 but seems to cancel noises in the room better. I did notice that it gets warm when in use but never noticed that with the VX-6000. I use it with Skype and Picasa and does well.

I bought this Product for my Brother for Christmas and it only work for about 3 hours and then it quit working. I would not recommend you buy this product at all.

Microsoft VX-5500This is the second Microsoft Webcam that I've gotten. The first being the VX-3000. While it is not substantially different I'm happy to see they made some refinements to the design of the button and the base.Overview-Physically it's a nice looking webcam. It even has a detachable faceplate with red, white and blue faces. Squareish in shape with a "windows live" button up top. The fact that they shrank the button is a big plush from the VX-3000. With that cam every time you tried to adjust the cam you ended up hitting the windows live button and being prompted to install/launch windows messenger.The base is integrated and kind of a wire frame assembly. It is substantial enough to ground the cam. The back cord is not so thick/stiff that it makes positioning the cam difficult. For laptop use the base unhinges in the rear to form something like an "L" turned on its side. At the front there is a small lip at the top of the L that will catch on the top of your screen and then the bottom of the L provides the support.InstallationInstallation was fairly straightforward. Make sure to put the disk in before hooking the cam up. They have that mentioned in several places in the packaging. The disk runs automatically and does the install. I did a standard install on a Dell 630 Laptop and it took about 15 minutes for the actual install and downloading of the latest drivers. I thought that a bit long but to be fair all operations involving the CD/DVD seem to take longer on that machine.After installing the hardware I plugged in the cam and it was quickly recognized. Went through the adjust your volume wizard and then it was ready to go. It was recognized by Yahoo IM and I was chatting away.PerformanceThe best I can say about the performance is it's a webcam. Very average. I've seen better, I've seen worse. It works. I've got webcams that are WAY older with lesser system requirements that do better.As part of the software they have some "cute" features where you can distort your face or overlay it with hats, sunglasses or other gimmicks. It's an interesting novelty for my kids, it kept them focused on it longer than they would have otherwise because I could make their face funny in a different way every few minutes. But for a regular conversation...no.So to summarizePros-Easy to installEasy to useFlexible mountingCons-None really, seems to be very standardConclusionIf you're looking for a decent (not exceptional) webcam this will do the job.

Pros - very easy to install and use, small enough to move around and the lens also angles in the frame, nice look with 3 colored faceplates to choose fromCons - I wish it had a lens cap, so I could cover it when not in use. The picture quality is not perfect, but it does well even though I have strong window light to one side of the room I use it in. The cord is a little short so if you don't have a USB port on your monitor that could be an issue unless your CPU is below your screen (mine is a couple of feet away).I'm happy with the value for the price. I use this for making Skype calls and it's great for that. You can position and move it very easily. It handles a range of light well. The small size and folding design are great for keeping my desktop uncluttered. I haven't used any of the special effects in the software; to be honest I haven't even looked at them.

This is my first webcam installation. Advanced or experienced PC users canbrowse the installation disk, and install only the files and programs onit needed to enable any functions of the product you want, and leave outwhat you don't (like Windows Messenger, foreign languages, etc.)I first installed it as a USB Video Device, and USB Audio Device using XPgeneric drivers. You need to install some drivers from the disk. Installthe drivers in the NX-6000 folder enables full-motion video and the built-in microphone to work. This allowed me to create and save the video reviewyou will see here. It is an .avi file, and plays using Media Player v11.This will not work on Yahoo Messenger unless you can change ColorSpace/Compression from Microsoft's MJPG to RGB 24. Shame on Microsoft because itis a good camera and they try to lock you into their IM service. I haven'tfound a driver yet on the installation disk to do this yet.Here the camera settings and characteristics are set at default until theother drivers to control more features and functions of the camera are in-stalled and enabled. It looks good to me so far @1024x768 on my CRT and itcan be tweaked more. Hope you enjoy my very first video!This was made on a Dell Dimension 4300 w/Pentium 4 1.7Ghz, 1Gb RAM with XPSP3 and Explorer 7.0 using the Microsoft Lifecam NX-3000. WARNING- DO NOTAutorun the installation disk. This product can be made to work with otherIM programs once the correct drivers are installed. I will have more infoabout this next review to help others buying this good VGA webcam. What ishelpful is downloading the amcap.exe program from Microsoft to your desk-top, then you can open it and change the camera settings outside of IM'soffline. Do you like my homemade wood mounting? The top piece is 1/4" inthickness, perfect for the rear bracket to mount against a wood block youcan use double-sided foam tape to mount on almost ANY monitor. We are technologically naive and are first time Skype and webcam users so we asked for recommendations from friends. Our friends suggested the VX-3000 and 5000, but based on portability (we only have a laptop), we selected the VX-5500. The webcam was easy to install and folds flat so it's convenient to take traveling. The picture is not of the highest quality, but it's sufficient for conversations with relatives.
