SO FAR NO PROBLEM WITH MY SYSTEM: WINDOWS XP HOME. A 60W DESK LIGHT GIVES ME ENOUGH LIGHT TO USE THE CAMERA AT NIGHT. Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000 ( 68C-00001 )

I hooked it up and it works fine. But it only seems to work with Windows Messenger, and I primarily use yahoo. It's probably a case of me not reading all the fine print before I purchased it, but shouldn't all webcams work with whatever program accesses it? It doesn't make sense that it only works with WM.The positive notes are it's very small and sits nicely on my flatscreen monitor. I just wish it would work in the way I want it to. I mean, my HP printer doesn't require I use all HP software to use it. I can hit print in any application and it will work. Why doesn't this work the same way?

I purchased this since it was Vista Certified. Immediately I had to download a new version of software (177 MBs) since there were "known compatibility issues with Vista". This is a Microsoft product running (or wanting to run) on a Microsoft operating system. Install hung up trying to install version 1.3 and I haven't been able to reinstall (need to uninstall before re-installing although it never installed and doesn't show up in the Control Panel add or remove program list ... since it never completed the install process.) This is going to be a huge waste of time to get this either on or off my computer. Why or why did I think a Microsoft product would work on a Microsoft operating system and the fact that the box said it worked with Vista meant anything at all.

This web cam works great on my HP ZD8230 laptop with 17 inch screen. I have had no problems at all with it. I has awesome resolution and is very compact. I have had no hardware or software issues with this product.

This web cam works great. It is easy to use and works well. It is also one of the clearest web cams that i have seen, the video is very fluid. I have used 4 webcams before this one and i have to say this one by far is my favorite.

This webcam has an excellent quality picture, it's easy to use. The only thing that you should do, is to download the new driver and software from microsoft's site because the driver that came with it crashes the Windows XP system. Download the new driver and install it before installing the webcam itself.

I bought the Lifecam 6000 and my girlfriend bought the NX6000 for her notebook. When we're both in town they work ok, the sound is always a little garbled and the picture quality is so-so. She recently traveled to a major southwest city and our communication became very poor - jerky video and bad sound. Truly unusable. She checked her internet connection speed and that was ok, so maybe it's the lifecams. Microsoft seems to not support them as well as other products. They seem to treat them as toys for the home as opposed to serious business use, which we expected them to be. They actually have a different advertising agency handling their lifecams from their other business products, which has been very unresponsive on questions I had when I wrote a review of them.Another gripe I have is that I had sent in the boxtop and my Amazon receipt for the Rebate to a 3rd party company that's handling the rebates, and they sent me a letter denying my rebate because I hadn't sent in the boxtop - which I did. Maybe Microsoft is losing too much money on Vista to pay their rebates. As someone who travels quite a lot, the lifecam was wonderful. I can communicate with family and friends with video. Great item, I received the item faster than I expected, hook up was simple, picture quality is excellent.

I thought I'd take a chance on this cam since- as one other reviewer stated- it SHOULD be compatible with Window XP. I'm running Win XP media center edition on a BRAND NEW Gateway 825 GM. 3400+ cpu, 1GB main memory. Essentially no other software installed and no other peripherals installed. Shouldn't be a problem, right? Wrong! I installed the software for this cam, downloaded and installed the Windows Live Messenger when promted by installation, followed all the prompts during installation and rebooted. Nothing. I got a "initialization error" when starting the lifecam software. Device manager and the windows system information reported the camera was "operating properly" but the apps couldn't see the cam or initialize it (yes I made sure I only had one app running that was trying to access the camera). I uninstalled the software and reinstalled it. Same result. I tried different USB ports- maybe I had a dead one, same result. I installed yahoo messenger and shut down all the other software, YIM said the camera "wasn't plugged in". I uninstalled the lifecam software with all the fancy bells and whistles and left only the drivers. Same result. I went to the MS lifecam support website. Not one mention was made of this type of issue. Mostly things about how to connect to someone with Windows Live Messenger (WLM) software and connection issues. Nothing on the actual camera or driver/installation errors.This product is going back, be assured of that. Silly me- thinking microsoft would make a product that actally worked on ALL of their systems, the ones that are on the shelves and in peoples homes now. I don't care if it's compatible with Vista, I don't have Vista and probably won't for a good ten years.

This product is not Vista compatible (it will work, but the sync between the sound and video is far off, making it horrible); Microsoft does not anticipate more drivers and updates for this product, instead, you will have to purchase their new line of webcams that are "Made for Vista" instead of just this "Vista Compatible".

I bought two of these cameras for my Dell D620 and Inspiron 6100 laptops and on each system I encountered extreme noise and static in the audio that I was not able to eliminate.

We are moving across country, so I bought this video camera as a gift for my father so that we can stay in touch through Skype. I had it shipped directly to him and told him to give me a call when it arrived so I could help him set it up.After it arrived, he called and said he had it ready to go - it was that easy to set up. We connected via Skype and everything worked great. I'm running a MacBook Pro with a built-in camera, so the video isn't as great as what I'm used to seeing but for the price, it deserves five stars.

This is a great little camera (really, it's a great "compact" size) and I love having it just sitting up at the very top of my flat screen monitor: out of the way, but always there when I need it! The integrated microphone is far reaching - the other day I was talking from the kitchen to my online friend overseas, the computer was quite a few feet away in the room next to the kitchen (no walls in between, of course!) and my friend could hear me without any problems. I had absolutely no problems with installation! The SECRET to an easy installation is, make sure camera is not connected to the computer yet, turn off all other software, put in the Install CD to install software, and connect the camera only when prompted by the installation software. This works seamlessly with the Microsoft Messenger/Windows Live messenger. Haven't tried with other online chat software. The extra fun animations you can use while chatting will also be a hit with friends and family! I really give Microsoft an A+ on this camera!

I was pleasantly surprised how easy this was to set up and use. Now I can send video's to my grandchildren, upload to my space and UTube and make a video diary for my family. It's wonderful! I'm sure there are better cams at higher prices but I cam very happy with this one and don't plan on changing. It didn't jiggle and covered my moves smoothly and kept in focus. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to start web videoing. It's a lot of fun!

I purchased two of these, one for my parents, one for my sister. It was easy to install. the Video image looks great, but the microphones will not work on either one. The documentation provided with the product is crappy.

I have a new Dell Dimension E520 with Vista Business. I bought the VX-6000 because it was the only web cam I could find that had Vista drivers, although I had to download the Vista drivers. The VX-6000 has poor video and audio, and when I upload a wmv file (only format produced) to YouTube, the audio and video are out of sync. (Resolution was YouTube-recommended 320x240.)I am guessing the problem is lack of maturity of the drivers for Vista. In any case, this product does not work well on Vista.

This product has a built in mike, and capable of taking still shots and motion video. The images are grainy. Otherwise, good for the novice.

Very pleased with this webcam. Very compact, and even gets smaller due to retractable lens, great utility for travel. Worked right from the first time with my laptop. People I video with say the resolution is noticeably better than my old one. Swivel adjustment is handy too. Also comes with nice Microsoft Live Cam software for zooming and other adjustments.One caveat: Its approx. 1/4" built-in mounting clip doesn't grip onto the top of my laptop due to the thickness of the monitor portion of my particular laptop model. The ad photos for the cam made it seem otherwise. It is stable however hanging at the top of my monitor, simply laying against a hook on my monitor. If this had fit perfectly I would have rated it 5 out of 5 stars instead of 4.

This is an amazing webcam... I love it. It has excellent quality of image. No manual adjustments for focusing. The software controls for zoom, tilt, and pan are cool. It is giving excellent quaility in low light also.Make me look good (in the cam ;)) to my freinds and family.The driver software got along with the cam did not work on Vista, but then it was not difficult to get it online.I would defnitly recommend this. It is also good if you are using Business confrencing.It fits on the laptop like a part of it. The clip at the back is adjustable (expands) about 1/2 an inch, but if your minitor is really thin, it may not fit tight. But my guess is that it should be good for 99% of the laptops out there.I would not recommend this for Desktops unless you want to fix (glue) them on top of your monitor.

I have spent a frustrating afternoon and evening trying to install the VX-6000 on a fully updated MS XP pro system. The install took forever, because every couple of minutes the install program couldn't find a needed file (if they need it, why not put it on the install CD?). So I had to browse my system and point them to where the file was (why couldn't they design the install program to search for the file instead of making me do it?). Finally I got a successful install, and then I was informed there was an updated version, and I needed to install that. So I went through the whole time-consuming process all over again, including the schtick about searching for the location of several files. Finally it again said I had installed the program successfully. So I rebooted my PC, and clicked on the Microsoft LifeCam icon. After cranking for awhile I get "initialization error". I try rebooting again---same error. So I type in "initialization error" in the search bar of the "help" section, and I get back "no topics found." So they sell me an expensive camera, run me ragged installing it, send me a repeated error message, and provide me no clue on what to do about it. (I guess now that Bill Gates is saving the world through philanthropy, nobody's left minding the shop?)

I needed to buy a webcam to do videoconferencing with relatives in Italy. I decided to buy a Microsoft product because I could be sure it would be the most conventional, mainstream webcam available. I decided to get this model because it appears to be the top-of-the-line for Microsoft, with a 2 Megapixel video resolution (as well as a 7+ Megapixel still camera built-in).This particular model is designed to attach to the top of a laptop. It does not fit securely on the top of a flat panel display, but with a little tape it is quite usable. I am very impressed by the quality of the picture, and the ease of use of the hardware and software. What most impressed me however was the noise cancellation done by the software, so that the camera's microphone does not create feedback from the PC's speakers (something that telephones do that most of us just take for granted).It worked like a charm for our internet videoconference with my in-laws in Italy. Really great. I have already ordered a second one to give as a gift.Note: this model is really designed to use with a laptop. I had to use tape to attach it to the top of my flat panel display and I had to use a USB extension cord to reach the PC under my desk.
