I've owned many HP printers over the years and have come to expect a certain level of quality and performance. This printer fails on all counts. The carriage is constantly getting stuck. The software is extremely obtrusive, frequently popping up notification boxes that I don't want and can't get rid of (and they don't tell you how to turn that off). In draft quality, many lines are blurred (the bottom half of the line is shifted from the top half), and the normal quality is very slow. When I start a print job, it sits there and churns for a minute or two before printing. And for a "mobile" printer it is big and heavy. This has got to be the worst printer I have ever had, and I wish I had just returned it and bought something else.

Third HP printer we've owned. First one was an old model, and it was passable as a color inkjet printer. The second one, a 550, printed well enough, but for some strange reason the printer driver and setup page would always revert to Spanish, no matter how many times we reinstalled. Eventually, it quit working altogether. So that brings us to the C4180. We needed a printer after the last two fiascoes, and this one was a reasonable price. We've had this printer now for about a year. At first, it worked very well. Scanning is great. The print quality is good. Then, as time went on, the infamous "Carriage Jam" occurred more and more frequently. Send a print job. The paper pulls in about half way, and then error. Absolutely no reason for it- new, fresh paper, no wrinkles, clean, etc. Put it in exactly straight. I've tried it with one sheet, a few sheets, full of paper, it doesn't matter. It still jams. With the tiny amount of ink they give you with this printer, it wasn't long fighting with carriage jams that it finally ran out of ink. So i run to the store, pick up two new ones and install them. Or, let me go back. I go to install them and there is a random spring laying in the area where the ink cartridges go. The old ones came out easily, no forcing or anything that should cause a spring to pop loose from God knows where. Since it is completely detached on both ends, and I have no way of knowing where it goes, I proceed to put in the new cartridges. Everything after that goes smoothly, they align correctly, test page comes out, great. Now, after a few successful printings, it won't print at all without a carriage jam. Followed all of HP's directions for correcting this to no avail. Wife is in the process of emailing HP and figuring out if there is anything to do with this thing. After three HP printers that have apparently failed - and these printers see extremely light use, we may have gone through a total of three reams of paper for the three- I've finally learned my lesson. No more HP printers for me. I'm not sure if anyone else's printers are any better, but they certainly can't be any worse.

First and foremost, the HP Photosmart B8550 is capable of printing very nice images. You aren't sacrificing much in image quality. The inks used in this model are dye-based (rather than pigment-based), so the resulting photo's lifespan may be shorter, but the output is gorgeous. For a large format printer, the B8550's footprint is surprisingly compact compared to its competitors. It's also prints fairly quietly and quickly . . seemingly much faster than my HP Color LaserJet 2605dn. I found that I like the built-in card reader, and the fact that it also works like any USB card reader attached to your computer, negating the necessity for a separate "stand-alone" reader. My main wishlist for this printer would be the availability of either WiFi or Ethernet connection. Another wish would be the ability to print to a range of fine art papers instead of being limited to HP's Advanced photo paper.Overall, if you are looking for an inexpensive large-format printer with excellent image quality, and do not need to print to a variety of papers, this may be your match.

Ok, I have been an avid photographer for many years now and thanks to the Amazon vine program, I was lucky enough to test out this near pro-quality photo printer. After 2 weeks of use, I am astonished by the quality of the prints. It has a wonderful preview screen which is very helpful when previewing shots. The print speed is above average for all sizes and I had no trouble setting everything up within 30 minutes. The media card readers are pretty standard these days, but nevertheless very convenient! There are however some cons to this product, but nothing too substantial. First, the price is quite steep. Unless you are a photographer and need high quality prints at home it would be hard to justify the cost. The inks are not cheap as usual and of course, no cables are included in the box. One last problem is make sure you understand that the footprint of this printer is quite large so make sure your desk/cart has enough room. This is a great printer, but at over $300.00 dollars, I can only give it 4 stars, especially with the high cost of ink and paper.

This printer was part of a package deal with a Compaq Presario that I purchased two years ago. When I got it home, there was no CD for installing it with Vista. After many calls to unknown geographical areas, they finally consented to sending me the disc.I print regularly, but not often, and I have only needed to change cartridges twice. I have not done any photos, never used the scan and only made a few copies last tax season. However, it now says that it is "out of paper", but it is not. I have had the "online chat", and completed all the steps on HP website for fixing this problem. Still, same problem. Can't believe anyone would pay this much for this machine. Two years of moderate use does not justify the price-tag.

The most unfortunate experience of this printer has been the knowledge that I paid full price for such a large paper weight.Despite one reviewer suggesting a helpful HP Support team, my experience has proved otherwise. After reading many reviews of this so-called printer, it seems that there is one common malfunction among them all. This printer does not detect paper and will not load paper.Despite the well known manufacturer defect, HP does not offer to replace the non-functioning item and only after several days of exchanging emails, they will only offer a list of approved repair shops. Hardly the responsible action one would expect from a company that has already explained to one reviewer that this problem is the result of a bad part supplied by a manufacturer they no longer work with.At full price, many other electronics can be bought at the same price and function much longer than a year (iPods, Cell phones, DVD Players, Xbox 360, digital cameras). Even with the concept that electronic items become outdated quickly, consumers still deserve quality for their money, especially in the midst of a possible recession. This is not a quality item and HP does not provide quality support for this item. Even with its now rightfully reduced price on Amazon.com, I still could not recommend this product even to my worst enemy. Thanks to my experience with this printer, I am now joining the many individuals whom constantly advise against buying HP products. Previously I always had moderate success with HP products, but I cannot justify buying HP again, when I've lost hard earned money on a piece of junk.

I'll be honest -- when I brought this home and got ready to install it on our home network, I was fully prepared for an afternoon full of tweaking firewall settings, going through weird and archaic menu on my router, maybe sacrificing a chicken to the ethernet gods, and so on. So you can imagine my surprise when everything actually worked. Like, on the first time. Everything went so smoothly, that I actually figured I must have done something wrong. But no, pretty soon my wife and I were both printing to the same printer without having to swap out USB cables or anything. It was a delight.I will say that I took other people's advice and avoided like the plague the "Installation CD full of crappy software nobody really wants" that came with the product and just downloaded the basic drivers from HP's website. So maybe that had something to do with it.As for the printer itself, I've got no problems with it so far. Granted, I'm not a photo-printing fiend, I'm more of an occasional "print out Google maps so I don't get lost" kind of guy, so maybe more picky people have their own quibbles with print quality, but it's been a great addition so far.

I have this printer for just over 1 1/2 yr with very light usage...just finished the original ink and put in 2 brand new HP cartridges 2 weeks ago and was still working ok up to yesterday. I tried printing an email today and did not pay attention to the paper tray which only had 3 pieces of paper left. Paper jam!! The roller fed all 3 paper into it. After clearing the paper jam from the back of the printer (the paper was intact without any missing piece), I was not able to make it work again....paper jam error won't go away no matter what I did. A called to HP 800 # got me an Indian customer service rep. She would not even patch my call to support since the warrrenty has expired. In order to talk to technical support, I would have to pay $35 to have support for 14 days. I am going to junk it and look for another brand. What a waste of money for a good looking printer with all the cool functions but does not last.Edit:I almost junk it...then I found a fix...not from HP but from other user. Check this out if you have the same paper jam problem: http://www.fixya.com/support/t203152-hp_photosmart_c4180_phantom_paper_jamThis link just save me $70 to have it exchanged by HP.

I have an Epson Photo Stylus 2000p and paid way more than this HP photosmart printer. They are comparable in print quality. You can print small or large and the quality is amazing. What is great about this printer is the cartridge system. If you run out of a certain color just purchase that color. That is one of the reasons I dumped the Epson printer. If you run out a certain color you have to trash the entire cartridge. Set up was a breeze on the macbook. Rather than using the cd's in the box I downloaded the latest drivers online. This is best and saves time in case you encounter a problem. Sometimes the cd's that come with the printer are already outdated. Overall I am very happy with the printer. It is a tad bit large but worth the space used.

I bought the HP Photosmart 3210 because it's feature set seemed head and sholders above the competition. Excellent performance specs, a reasonable price, and it's even network ready, so I can put it on my network as a shared printer. The first thing that I noticed is that it is a bit noisy. The unit makes a very annoying squeaking/chirping noise. I resolved to live with the noise however, because the 3210 seemed to be just what I had been looking for. Then, I began to notice that the 3210 erroneously reports that it is out of paper, even when it is not. It seems that I could not print more than 4-5 pages without the bogus "out of paper " error. As you can imagine, this is rather annoying when you send multi-page print jobs to the 3210 and they never successfully complete without my constantly monkeying around with the paper tray.Assuming that my 3210 was simply defective, I exchanged the printer at the store for another unit. Guess what, the same bogus "out of paper" error. So, I did a bit of reasearch and found out that lots of people are having this same problem with their 3210. So, I emailed HP tech support and explained my problem and told them that it seems that lots of other people have the same problem. I asked them what their solution to the problem is.Well, without bashing the HP tech support, let's just say that not only won't HP tech support own up to the problem, they merely give me a list of really unhelpful/irrelevant things to try. Upon tiring of getting nowhere via email, I ask them to call me so that we can discuss the problem. They said they were unable to call me and can only exchange it for another unit.Since I saw no reason to believe that the third unit would perform any better, I declined their offer and promptly returned my 3210 to the store for a refund.Too bad for HP, a simple acknowledgement of the obvoius problem and a promise to investigate a proper fix (in the near future) would have kept me as a customer.Updated: I decided to pester HP about this issue a bit more after this original posting. They did finally admit that this is a known issue. They also said that it was/is a bad lot and assured me that if I purchased one directly from HP, it would not be from the bad lot and it would not have the paper feed problem. I am taking a chance and will give this one more try because I really liked the Photosmart 3210 (beyond the paper feed problem) Stay tuned....Another Update: The third unit arrived today, directly from HP. Guess what, Yup, that's right, same paper feed problem. So much for their assurances that it was a lot problem.Final Update: I was able to get rid of this bogus "Out of Paper" error on the third unit, with no help from HP. I never get the out of paper error any more. In fact, I am now keeping the 3210 and I am quite please with it. So, what did I do to get it to work reliably?Well, in spite of the fact that HP insists that it is a bad paper sensor that is causing all of the problems, I just didn't buy that explanation. Clearly the rollers just are not grabbing the paper. On all three units, I could hear the unit trying to grab paper, but not succeeding at it. So, here is what I did:Load the unit up with paper. I opened a word processor and created a 49 page empty document (no characters typed at all).I sent in the 49 page empty file to the printer. All this does is grab 49 pages out of the paper tray and cycle them through the printer. Then, I take these 49 pages and put them back into the paper tray, and then print it again, and again and again....The first several iterations, I would get the "Out of Paper" error about 5-10 times per print job. Over time, the frequency of errors reduced to the point that they never occur any more. I checked the "printed pages" counter and it was about 1000 pages. I suspect that the 1000 pages have softened up the rollers enough that thay are broken-in and no longer slip. While I do not believe that a user should have to break-in the 3210 in this manner, at least it is working now and is 100% reliable. I have since sent an additional 700-800 pages through my 3210 without a single "Out of Paper" error.Perhaps this tip will help others get their units working as well. Good Luck Guys!

I have had this printer now for about 6 weeks. Printed 8 of my top photographs at 13 inches by 19 inches and ran out of yellow and photo black ink. Now I know that the inks that come with the unit are not "full" and I do hope I get a better run from the new XL cartridges. Apart from that I am over the moon with the results of the prints. Crisp clear and they look great at this size. Not a problem to set up but the setup did something to my registry settings and it now takes forever to boot. If your interested in large format printing from an 8mp camera then this is a good buy. I am more than just satisfied with the purchase. The pics are sellable.

The HP B8550 color printer is really nice. I wanted it because I take a lot of photographs and like to print copies to send in cards and such.PROS: Prints beautiful prints in a variety of sizes and prints them fast. Although I have not needed to purchase any refills for it yet, I have noticed that the price to refill is very reasonable, which is a huge concern if you are like me and do a lot of color printing of photographs. And I have had wonderful luck using HP products. Never experienced any problems with their printers and I have owned many.CONS: It's large and takes up a lot of desk space. However, I am lucky to have a separate printer stand next to my desk, so the large size does not take away my needed space. I mention the size constraints in case someone is very limited in their available space.

This product is a huge waste of money. I have owned numerous scanners and have been editing pictures for years. It is unusable for the simplist function without spending hours figuring out how to make it work. - The "photo wizard"- which I have not been able to find a way to bypass- will only allow you to print the preset sizes it offers. If all you want to do is stick your camera disc in and print standard size photos its ok- if you want to crop, edit, or adjust the picture in anyway- be prepared to spend hours of research, and trial and error.---- Good luck- I have pretty much given up. - Default sets to the slowest, most ink wasting speed setting every use. You have to negotioate numerous panels to select anything different- EACH print. Unbelievable waste of time and money- its over 100 dollars to replace ink cartridges- which have been wasted printing documents when you just need to print something quickly. - Deceptive sales practice- HP was selling the ink cartridges individually or in a package with reduced price- Only when the employees at Office Max alerted me to it- did I realize that the packaged ink have less than one quarter the ink that the individual cartridges held. Office max had so many complaints that they were warning everyone who were buying this type ink. I could go on- but you get the idea!

At first I could not get it to connect to my network after installing and re-installing the software. I called HP support and they had me upgrade my memory on my computer since the program made my computer run slow and crash. On the second call to HP we were able to get it to work after "3 hours" on the phone!!! The last two calls I was able to talk with tech support in Canada but today all I got was someone in India who asked me to call back tomorrow because his computers were down!! Good luck if you buy this printer!

I bought this printer and used it to print up material away from home twice. Then after I had plugged it in at home there was an explosion when I tried to connect it to the USB port of my computer. Our satellite TV quit working immediately, the input had been blown and had to be replaced. Our 42" Plasma TV (2 years old) quit working a few days later. Strangely the USB port where the explosion occurred seems to be fine. I had enjoyed it until it proved to be very faulty.

I purchased a C4180 in late 2006, the printer was very easy to set up and I loved the features. Soon it started having feed problems however, and eventually quit working altogether. A call to HP yielded fast and courteous service, I was impressed with how they handled a replacement. Got the new printer, and it worked fine for awhile then started misfeeding and giving the carriage jam errors that have been mentioned here. They want $35 to service the printer as a one time fee, but it is starting to look as there is an inherent design flaw in this model and i'm just going to find another one. The features and performance of this printer would have yielded a 4 or 5 star rating from me, but alas it's worthless if it will not do something as simple as feed a sheet of paper.

After reading all the reviews here, and against my better judgment, I bought a 3210 - because it had the exact features I was looking for in a multi-function device. My experience was light years apart from what the others have left on this site. Please understand that I carefully read the instructions and gave some thought to the process before connecting the printer to my network. Additionally, my system is clean and well maintained; i.e., I have no spyware, adware or viruses, and run weekly scans to keep it that way. Your mileage may differ.Software install - no issues. At 1.1GB it's a big install, but I had no problems with it. The installer correctly detected my firewall and had me disable it after I detached my network from the Internet. After the required reboot, it finished installing without any hiccups. I also made sure to click on the "HP Software Update" within the HP Solution Center before doing anything further, installed the rest of the updates and rebooted. Again, no issues at all after making sure the software load was completely current.Network configuration - no issues. I have a custom configuration for my network; I setup the IP address on the 3210 manually and added the printer to my router and firewall *before* installing the software. During the installation process, the installer spotted the printer at the correct IP address that I had already given it and moved forward without any incident.Paper pickup and out of paper notices - no issues. I use GP Advantage Premium Ink Jet paper from CostCo and am having no issues whatsoever. Same thing with bulk Kodak photo paper from CostCo. Most inkjet printers have an issue with overfilling the paper tray, so I keep mine under filled. No problems with getting erroneous out of paper messages. The plain paper output looks acceptable in rough draft and stellar in high resolution; the photo paper output is just drop dead gorgeous in hi-res; neither paper exhibited any evidence of gouges.PDF creation - no issues. The software works as designed, without wasting any paper or creating gibberish. Black and white, gray or color, all the settings worked as I expected them to and created perfect PDF documents.Hardware buttons - no issues. All the buttons work like they should on the printer. Additionally, all the buttons within the software residing on the PC work as advertised as well.Ink usage - no issues. The ink usage is as I expect so far. With plain paper I use the draft mode on everything except for what others see; I never print photos of any kind on plain paper (plain paper is a sponge for printer ink). With photo paper I use a very glossy finish, which helps keep the ink usage down. I was quite surprised by the tiny containers of ink that are used in the printer, but nothing more than that. I'll have a better idea how the 3210 ink usage compares to my old inkjet this next Christmas when I print out my annual calendar gifts to family members.Noise - no issues. Compared to many other printers and scanners I've used over the years, both HP and non-HP, the 3210 is *very* quiet. The sound rises when scanning really high DPI levels, but is whisper quiet at the default 300 DPI for low-res scans.Overall impressions - 5 stars. The printing is superb, the device is quiet, it has built-in networking, everything works as I expect for it to; what's not to like? My experience has been unlike the others listed here - don't know why - and I'll continue to buy and recommend HP products.

I purchased the HP 3210 to replace a six year old laser printer. I read several reviews before deciding on this model, but apparently I didn't read closely enough.Setup of the printer was a breeze, and for the first week or two things seemed to work flawlessly. Most of what I do at home is just some light document printing, which worked like a charm. I also played with the scanning, as well as the copying of a photo, which was really very cool. Again, it just worked great and I was pleased with the purchase. Then after a couple of weeks I started getting an "Out of Paper" message on the display, despite the fact that the tray was full. I did all the usual stuff, pulled the tray out, reshuffled the paper, put it back in, and reset. The printer seemed to work OK again, until the next time I'd print a document.Honestly I really didn't pay that much attention to the issue until the other day when I was doing some research for my job and wanted to print out a 45 page document. A complete nightmare; I spent 2 hours of a Sunday afternoon just trying to get the output. It would print a page, then give me the error. I hit the OK button, it clicks and whirs a little, spits out another page, and then the same error. This all happened while using HP's premium Inkjet paper. I tried another brand of multi-purpose paper (20# weight instead of 24#) with equally poor results. The problem has just gotten progressively worse, and I'm at a loss as to what to do. I purchased at Circuit City in early April so I doubt they will accept a return. My only recourse will probably be to contact HP, which I haven't tried yet but will.It is really a shame because, aside from this major problem, the printer is everything I need. The right size, functions, etc. Now I'm just hoping that I can recoup some of my investment.I'm very disappointed and really expected more from HP. Obviously, and unfortunately, I cannot recommend this printer.*****ADDENDUM*****6/11/06: After writing the above review I contacted HP tech support regarding the "Out of Paper" problem. I was expecting this to be a nightmare but I was actually quite impressed with the hold time (less than 2 minutes) and customer service. Anyway, after describing the problem the HP rep acknowledged that this has been a documented issue with this model. Of course he put a postive spin on it and said "since this is a new printer and the technology is very precise, etc.). Bottom-line: By default the printer is set to "Automatic" paper size and "Automatic" paper type. The HP rep instructed me to change these settings to "Letter" and "Premium Inkjet Paper" respectively. Doing this did in fact seem to solve the problem. So in essence, the "Automatic" settings do not work on this printer (as obviously they should). However this "workaround" is acceptable. *If you do try this be sure to save the settings as turning off the printer will reset the defaults back to "Automatic" unless you have taken the extra step to save settings. One last note: Even with these settings changes I did still receive the dreaded "Out of Paper" message when the tray got a little low (about 10-15 sheets left). Anyway, I'm going to work with it for a few days and see how it goes.I still wish I'd bought the Canon Pixma MP800!

After suffering through years with an old Epson Stylus 1200, with the ink cartridges constantly clogging and the paper feeder unable to reliably print five pages without jamming a wad of them through at once, I resolved I would never buy an Epson again. I bought this printer last week, and I should have done it years earlier: it feeds paper reliably, doesn't seem to eat ink (I have already printed a 55-page matte document with a lot of full-bleed photos), and is quite speedy. Setup in Linux is a big plus - HPLIP software is installed standard under Ubuntu. This printer is a real charmer, and when you consider that a full set of ink these days will run you $50, the price is CHEAP!
