Long Antenna that look weird.

Great little adapter. Its the size of your fingernail but still offers rapid internet. I would like to add that it is much faster than my laptops stock wifi.
The only warning I give is as follow. DO NOT use the supplied CD for drivers!!
I spent 30 minutes trying to get it to work using the supplied CD drivers. I then did (what men do best) and ignored the manual and let windows find drivers online. Instantly the dongle started to flash and work.
Apart from this hiccup the dongle is great.
EDIT!
I have now started using this adapter in my new computer and oh dear. This adapter is like an old sports car. A pain in the backside to get going but a beauty when running. Its not uncommon to wake my computer up and spend 10 minutes trying to get the blasted thing to connect.
Quiet a shame seeing as it works really well once connected.....
I am sorry to say that I can not recommend this adapter.
Second EDIT
Well after a few more days it is broken. It no longer connects to the internet.
What more do I have to say apart from I am very disappointed that it didnt last past a week.

By contrast, this Edimax is Plug & Play on Linux Ubuntu and Mint and has a decent range for such a diminutive device. Time will tell if it lasts the course but so far I am very pleased.

There are numerous people who have stated it does not work with Mac OS, I even asked the question myself and was told by a reviewer that it did not work. However IT DOES!!
Download the driver from http://www.edimax.us/html/english/frames/b-download.htm
And install before plugging in the dongle.
It does not work through Mac OS network settings, but rather through its own utility (why I only gave it three stars).
However it does provide wifi internet at reasonable speeds. I am yet to see blistering wifi performance speeds, or even similar speeds to the stock wifi card with my apple AirPort Extreme router, however it DOES WORK WITH YOSEMITE!!
Wether it will continue to do so with El Capitan who knows, for the moment I am just happy that it has allowed my aging Mac to remain useful

A good £6 worth of internet connectivity!

For installation in Windows, don't use the mini CD that comes in the box. Connect your laptop to the internet (using an Ethernet cable if you haven't got wifi) BEFORE plugging in the adaptor. After plugging the adaptor in, Windows will spot the new device and go off to find the drivers for you and install them automatically.
The Linux installation was more of a headache and it took me many, many hours of searching before I found a working solution. There is a baked-in driver in the latest Linux Kernel (3.11), but it doesn't seem to work for many people. Going to the Edimax website and downloading their driver package didn't work for me and going to the Realtek website was no better. The problem is that if you download the newest drivers from Realtek for the RTL8088CUS chip (which, confusingly, uses the RTL8192CU drivers), they either don't compile without error or cause a kernel panic.
The solution that worked for me (and many others, it seems) comes from Googling these terms: "github", "pvaret" and "rtl8192cu-fixes". I would quote the exact link, but Amazon deletes all links in reviews, regardless of how useful they are. When you find the page, towards the bottom of the page you will find some excellent instructions on how the install the drivers. You need to install git first ('sudo apt-get install git' in the terminal window), then just follow P Varet's excellent instructions. After a reboot I had stable wifi. My sincere and eternal thanks to P Varet for coming up with this solution and Timothy Phillips on whose work it is based.
Added 4 Jan 14 - Fitted this to my Raspberry Pi under Raspbian and it just worked!

After inserting and removing 4 times, the plastic part has broken. What remains is still able to carefully remove it from a USB slot and it does seem to still function (albeit badly, but then it was bad from the start). This won't be an issue for you if you intend for it to be for a single machine only.
If you are looking to provide wireless to a tired old desktop or laptop with no built in wireless running a lightweight linux distro to get some use out of your old tech, look elsewhere. I did not test this under a windows environment, where I suspect it's a lot less hassle.

The first was used to improve the weak Wifi performance built into my Samsung NC-10, It installed very easily and remained in use until I gave my daughter to let her move a tower computer. Following an unhappy experience with another brand, I got another Edimax for my W10 tower -- again, it was recognized immediately and just needed the password providing.
The third one is to go back on the NC-10.

Windows was a doddle, nil effort required and it has worked seamlessly. I needed a WiFi adapter which was as small as possible and could be added and removed quickly and without disruption, and this was perfect. Wireless reception is only so-so, but I knowingly traded this out for small size so am happy. I would not hesitate to recommend the 7811 for this application.
Raspbian as always was more painful. There was a lot of messing around configuring drivers with unguessable command lines. Plenty of wrong advice on the Internet about how to do it! I also lost a lot of time to buggy USB in Raspbian (fixed now I think). As others I had to connect direct to the Pi and not via a hub. But ultimately it did work and it works well. This will sound bad to Windows users but is par for the course with Linux so it's the result that I care about and that is good. Again small size is a big benefit as I needed it to fit in a small space, but it's a fixed installation so I don't care about setup time. It does light up in blue quite brightly when in use. This is mildly handy in debugging but annoying in service so I covered it with black tape and now I get a subtle blue glow which is fine.
Overall I'm happy and would choose it again if I need a third.

The reason I chose this adaptor was because it's a nano-sized adaptor and although not being dual band (unable to see a 5G wireless connection - and the reason it gets 4, not 5 stars) size was the most important factor for me (as I mostly work on a laptop any anything bigger would get in the way and be knocked a lot).
I was able to get this working without too much trouble on Ubuntu 12.04. I found some very helpful instructions online and am going to try to link to the page. Unfortunately Amazon remove hyperlinks so I'm going to stick some spaces in the link to try to get around this. If you do use this, remember to remove any spaces when you copy and paste the link: r-statistics . com / 2011/11/edimax-ew-7811un-usb-wireless-connecting-to-a-network-on-ubuntu-11-10/
Hope this helps anyone looking for an adaptor for their Ubuntu system.
