I purchased a Linksys router to use with my Xbox360. When I plugged it in, all it ever did was consistently dropping my connection everytime I played a game. So I ended up returning that one and went with this router. It is the most amazing router i've ever seen. First off the design is a very sleek looking design with all the LED's on the unit. Also the most important thing is that it does not drop my connection when sending large amounts of data to the web. It has a 266 mhz processor regulating all the data and considering it's a router, 266 is insanly fast.This is a very good product. Well worth the price.

This is a very nice product. It does everything that it promises and it is very stable and does not need to be reset. the led's are just plain to bright. there is no reason for them to be this bright. this thing doubles as a night light in my office.

This is a great router for the price. It's easy to configure and the documentation is pretty good. It explains the routing pretty well. What sets this router apart from others is the quality of service settings (QoS) that allow you to prioritize ports for bandwidth usage. You can set your streaming music or game ports to use a high priority and thus never get cut off by maxing out your bandwidth. This alone makes it worth the price.One thing to note: if you're on a Mac and try to configure this router through safari (It's web page configuration) it won't work because of a bug in safari. Use Firefox and you'll be golden.(Yes it works on Macs.)

I bought this router to replace a Linksys. The Linksys was good but after about two years, it would lose connection. This D-Link so far keeps the connection and is definitely faster. Setup was super easy, actually easier than the Linksys. I read some people complaining about the LEDs being bright, but I think they look normal. I'm very pleased.

In the 4+ months I've owned this router it's handled everything I've thrown at it, without even a hiccup. DSL, VPNs, QoS, heavily configured SPI firewall & filtering, Bittorrent, XBox Live etc etc. And unlike some other manufacturers I could mention, D-Link continues to release regular firmware updates/improvements for their products.The DGL-4100 has a very small footprint, generates next to no heat and its LEDs are blue and very bright. I guess the only word of caution I'd give is that it lacks a CLI. Administration is done via a set of built-in HTTP/Flash pages, accessible from any web browser. Personally I much prefer this GUI interface (no cryptic command lines to learn), but more hardcore network/telnet types may object to it.And BTW, if someone is having the exact same problem with three different brands of routers, their routers obviously aren't the problem.

I suffered from the same problem with this switch that others here have reported. I returned it to D-Link for a replacement, because they had NO RECORD of any customers having such a problem and NO IDEA what could cause it. When the replacement device arrived, I experienced the same problem--whenever I sent something to my network printer, the switch would reset, dropping all connections. I believe I've isolated this as a power spike issue. Each time I experienced this problem, it's because my laser printer is coming out of sleep mode. Note that my switch is NOT plugged into the same power strip as my printer. In fact, I have my switch plugged into a surge/UPS block. One other point worth noting that I think speaks poorly of D-Link. Though they sent me the replacement product, I was charged TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS when I hadn't included the original "mounting kit" in the return package. The mounting kit consists of two screws and two plastic wall anchors. TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS! Unbelievable.

I have deployed close to a hundred VPN routers for my clients, and have done so primarily with Linksys BEFVP41 routers. They are cheap, but they have done the job - until lately, that is. Many of them are failing (crypto sub-system failure), so replacements are beginning to occur on a regular basis.I have used several other brands (3com, Netgear, etc.), but have not seen anything at this price point ($52). I picked one up from my distributor to test, and have not been disappointed.This unit will accept inbound PPTP and LT2P connections, something most VPN routers do not offer. I think the limit is five. I usually don't need this, as most of my clients already have PPTP running on their servers. It also claims to allow up to 40 IPSEC tunnels. That is less than the BEFVP41, but more than most people will ever need (I currently have 40 on my Netgear FVS328).You should plan on upgrading the firmware right away. I just upgraded to 1.40, which has been solid. The previous version (1.39) allows MPPE encryption on PPTP connections, and adds IPSEC keep-alive functionality. Mine was shipped with 1.36.The netbios functionality works excellent. The only thing keeping me from giving it five stars is the inability to specify Netbios by tunnel. I have clients that need Netbios (network neighborhood computer browsing), and others that do not. The problem is between my network and my client's networks. I want Netbios on some, and definitely not others. The Dlink offers it to all or none.If you have two or more offices with broadband connections, and wish to get them connected for sharing of network resources, this is the only way to go. As a matter of fact, you can connect a modem to the serial port on this unit and configure it to use Dial-up or ISDN, instead of cable, dsl, or T-1. I kept looking for a fallback configuration, i.e. dial the connection if the broadband connection fails, but I didn't see it. I rarely need this, but it really could be useful for branch office connections to host systems (telnet, AS400, unix POS systems, etc.). Perhaps a later firmware release will add this capability.If you are new to IPSEC, this might all seem daunting. If you have done it before, it shouldn't be a problem. I got a tunnel up and running on the first try, without referring to any documentation. Linksys router users will balk at having to set up the IKE and IPSEC options on different screens. Anyone who has experience with Netscreen, checkpoint, watchguard, netgear, and the bulk of the existing VPN routers out there should get it on the first try.For $52.00 (give or take), this is a steal. For my typical branch office clients, this will be my first choice. The Netgear FVS318 is a good router, but at nearly twice the price. Sorry guys, the Dlink gets the nod here.Don't even consider Linksys anymore. The only thing worse than the quality of their products (since the Cisco take-over) is the appalling tech support. It's sad to see Linksys decline as they have. I haven't purchased anything from Linksys in a year.

This router is the best if you have the money for it.I have broadband cable hooked up to my iMac and an Xbox 360.It works great with my setup.I love the amount of control I have with it.

Bought one for the office on December 05. It does not work. Well, it does, but it goes on and off , dropping the conecction very offen. Users are complaining about the extra time it takes them to finish their job on the network. So I will have to buy another brand , as suggested by our IT advisor. I lost my money on this one.

Switch periodically resets and drops connections. RMA'd first unit, and new unit does the same thing. No way to determine why it resets - extremely frustrating. D-Link Tech-support is no help and claims no knowledge of this apparently common problem --- no wonder they discontinued this product.

I purchased two of these to be used in a clustered environment which means I can't have loss of connectivity. Both switches, after a few weeks, started to reset themselves. I replaced cables and still had the same problem. I RMA'd both and the replacements are the same. DO NOT BUY THEM you will be sorry if you do.

Excelent product, it covered all my expectations, good speed, ease of install and good presentation.im not a reviewer of nature but i can tell you that the process went smooth as never have been, get the switch out of the box, turn it on, plug the cables, and start transfering way faster than with your old 100 mbps switch.

The device works as advertised. I use (Vonage) and have dropped my average ping 10 to 15 while calls are in progress. No additional port forwarding firewall settings necessary as on my previous older device for vonage. The device is easy to set up for the average user. However, the advanced features for bandwidth allocation are limited for expert users who would want a more granular level of control. The product is not a true QOS device. But then again, this device is designed for home use average user.I am a network professional but will not bore you with the details.

DGS-1008D, P/N:BGS1008DA.C3, H/W Ver.:C3. This gigabit switch repeatedly drops all connection. This happened to two of the D-Link DGS-1008D switches that we've purchased, so may indicate a manufacturing problem. Resolved problem by replacing AC/DC power supply units with non-Linksys brand.

I had my doubts about how well a router could handle the stress that I would put it through--I use bandwidth intensive applications that generate alot of connections that can easily overwhelm a bad router. But this handles media streaming and the internet connection of two computers and an Xbox 360 with no issues. The gamerfuel works well to prioritize sensitive applications like media or gaming, so if you have a bandwidth hog at home causing your games to lag, it's definitely worth every penny.

I bought this router to replace a desktop that I use as an internet router (cable internet) and to use to to put a Cisco VoIP gateway behind the router. For VoIP and general internet use, it works great but if you use VPN (L2TP in my case), the speed is excrutiatingly slow through this router. This is consistent with other users' experiences. When I put my desktop (which is an old and slow machine) back as the router, VPN speed is at least 20 times faster. This is after all my troubleshooting and I'm a networks engineer. If you need VPN, don't get this router.

Had this switch since early March. Resets about once or twice a day. Not good with VPN connections. The case is very hot and I feel that is contributing to the problem. Called support, got India of course. When it does work, it is quite fast. Using with a mix of broadcom and dlink gigE NICs. Will request an RMA and see if replacement unit is better. This is likely the last straw with Dlink products. Two prior routers had issues and support is terrible.

Especially with roommates! We have the prime example as to why this new gaming router from D-Link truely works. We all play games on our PCs when we have time, but we also download a lot from P2P programs, almost constantly. But when we are downloading from P2P we have to limit our download speeds if the others want to be able to play an online game without lag. So now instead of us doing this manually when the others are downloading this router effectively does that for us.This gaming router prioritizes the gaming data that goes through it so that all of our gaming get faster response times thus better playability. See more in-depth reviews on hardware review sites for more technical information on how this works.We bought this for it's nice look, gmaing priority, and D-Link name. We weren't let down. The interface has flash and is nicely done. It's pretty easy to use, and has lots of customization features. I've even heard of this working well with prioritizing VoIP traffic for all those with VoIP phones and need the quality of service (QoS) type features from a router. As far as I know this is the only router out there right now that has a QoS type feature for the WAN port. From what I've read the QoS on other routers is only for the LAN (local network) side.The price might be a little pricy for some, but for us three here it wasn't bad when we split the cost, and it greatly increases our internet enjoyment. w00t!

I purchased this unit to add some more computers to my network. I had the 5-port version already (1005D) and I just used the last slot there to connect it to the 8-port 1008D. No tinkering, it just works right out of the box. Highly recommended.

Initial installation was a snap! Plugged it in, turned it on and it was off and running. Had to update the ROM code to the latest version but that was expected. So far so good. Been using it for a month or so now and it works as advertised. Set it up for a few online games to one computer and Bit torrent to another computer. No game lag as I had before using my Linksys router. This router really works as advertised! The blue lights on the router are pretty cool but since the router is in my room it is like having a night light on with a blue hue. This is the fifth router I have owned for home use in the past four years and it is certainly the best!

I'm on my third D-Link 704P. Why did I come back for a third beating? Great question! The first 704P I had -- revision A (brown case) -- was incredibly reliable, was one of the very few routers with a parellel port print server, and had much higher than average throughput. It lasted me 4 years of solid use. So when it died, I had no problems replacing it with another 704P, this time revision C (silver case). After 1 month of use, it stopped working. Assuming I had a lemon, I replaced the replacement. Here I am another month later with a non-working router again. I can only conclude that the newer models aren't nearly as reliable as the old. Time to drop my trusty printer with the parallel port, and move on to a different brand of router. *sniff*

I owned this item before. It used to work correctly and at some point started crashing every day. When I recover it the next day it will crash again. Eventually it stopped working one day and ended up in the dumpster. That prompted me to move to the DI-704UP. I don't recommend it.

I bought this router to hook a couple of houses together. It works great for that. Encryption does work in this mode.The real problem I had was with tunnels from my laptop. Tunnels don't work with encryption turned on, so I create an unencrypted tunnel, and then I connect to my XP Pro box at home through an encrypted tunnel. That seems to work fine.I have been happy with the product, except for the fact that the encryption doesn't work on the external tunnel.Hint: If you want to VPN 2 houses together, and either have to use DHCP with your broadband provider, use DDNS in the router with dyndns.org, then your VPN stays up even as your IP addresses change.**** Response to another reviewer *****I tried to use PPTP from my laptop remote. It works, but not if I turn on encryption on the tunnel. If he knows how to do that, I would sure like the information. I had this problem, and at least 10 others with the same problem on support sites, and nobody had the solution. Please post how you got PPTP tunnels to work from Windows with encryption enabled.
