Don't be put off by the 300dpi rating of this printer. The dye-sublimation technology prints dots of actual color, as opposed to inkjets who need a lot more dpi because they sputter many microscopic single-color droplets over the "dot" space to make it appear as a single color from a normal viewing distance. The CP-760 photos are indistinguishable from the ones you order at a photo lab. It does need special Canon-made paper and ink packs, but the Canon KP-108IN Color Ink Paper Set (3115B001) has everything you need for printing 108 4x6 photos at a cost of about 27 cents each (or perhaps a bit more if you take printer cost into account, which you should). Worth the convenience compared to walking to the store, especially when you only want a print or two.The consumables are for exactly the number of photos they say they are, it does not matter how much or how little color is in the photo. The "ink pack" contains a roll of 4" wide film with 6"-long sections in each color (yellow, magenta and cyan) followed by a 6" clear coat, of exactly the number needed to make the number of photos indicated. After printing, each section ends up with a negative of that color from the image so it can't be reused. I imagine one could recover the photos from the discarded negatives, so if that is a problem, you should yank the film out after it's "empty" and dispose of it in some other way than throwing the cartridge in the trash.Size-wise, a 3:2 format photo (as from a DSLR) fits the 4x6 paper better than the standard 4:3 format found in most digicams, which will get chopped top and bottom. Color came out very nice. You can print 8 images in one photo if you want to check the color levels. The LCD is low-res and should not be used to judge image color under any circumstances, luckily there is little the LCD can do that you can't do from a camera. You can print straight from a memory card, using the clunky image selection interface on the LCD that does not allow for much control. Or you could prepare a "print order" in the camera, so called DPOF. As you view your images in camera in PLAY mode, look for a "Print" or "DPOF Print" in the image MENU. Then follow the prompts. When you're done take the card out and put it in the printer, who will execute your "print order".Another way is to connect the camera directly to the printer with the camera's USB cable, if the camera supports a "print mode" on the dial (PictBridge), most do. In this mode you can also choose 2-up or 4-up modes and once you push "Print" it will send them straight to the printer. Nice but wastes camera battery. You can also print wirelessly, straight from your phone or laptop, by sending photos to the printer via Bluetooth. Canon says to buy the BU-30 adapter for that, but I had an Iogear Bluetooth USB adapter (GBU311) lying around from an old laptop and had to try it. I am happy to report that it works just fine in this printer and I could print from my phone, which may suggest that there is a good chance any USB Bluetooth adapter might work. Finally, you can print from the computer via USB. There is a CD with software for Mac and Windows which I haven't tried yet.It works with Linux. Gutenprint-cups 5.2.4 knows of some CP models but not this particular one, so you need to select the driver manually as Canon SELPHY-CP-520 CUPS+Gutenprint (note that 750, which is the closest model, does NOT work). There's also a gutenprint-plugin package that allows printing directly from GIMP. With these I recommend scaling the image to the paper size prior to printing, to avoid visible aliasing that happens when you let the driver do the scaling. In GIMP, resize with Lanczos(Sinc) to a width of 1740 (3.9") or a height of 1170 (5.8"), then apply a bit of unsharp mask if necessary.I can't tell from the Canon product chart what is different in the new models outside of physical appearance and some gimmick software features (borders and such), because the CP series are all dye-sub 300 dpi printers using the same ink and paper. So given that the 760 is at a very sweet price point at Crutchfield right now, if you don't need a bucket or option for optional battery, I'd say go for it.

We don't print out a lot of pictures but I did want a quick/convenient way to print some to throw in b-day cards or to the grandparents....this is PERFECT!! My favorite part is I haven't even hooked it up to my computer, I just throw in my cannon SD card and print straight from that. I'm not a super high tech person so this works great for us. I did the math and after I factored in time, gas this saves me money.

Received this printer as a gift and loved the quality of the photos UNTIL one of the ink cartridges developed a problem. This printer uses a layered film system which produces great color but if a piece breaks off there is nothing you can do. I took it to a friend who knows small electronics and they took it apart and pulled out several tiny pieces of the film that had broken off. They cleaned the machine and I took it home and put in a new cartridge and it happened again. I now have a box of film and paper and no printer. Another bad feature is it also uses special paper so you have to buy the paper/ink combo packs.

I calculated the price difference between this and ordering prints online or Target. It's about 10-15 cents per print more (not including the price of the machine). So it definitely won't save you money. But if you are just printing a picture here and there it is so convenient and fast. Especially when scrapbooking, it is so much easier to just print the picture you need right away rather than have to wait. I am definitely pleased with this purchase!

Make sure to order at least one pak of paper/ink with this as it does not come with any in the box.Ok so you are thinking about buying one of these little gems. I purchased one of these the other day for the Santa Claus gigs I do. I am a professional Santa and this year we have added the ability to get a picture with Santa. I needed something compact with good quality and good speed. After reading about all differnt types of printers I decided to go with this one. This is not the first dye sub printer I have purchased so I knew a bit about them before. Lets start with setting it up, out of the box you plug it in load the paper pak and away you go. Open the side door to load the paper pack which comes as 1 unit paper and dye sub ink all in one piece. It slides right into the printer only 1 way it can go no way to screw this part up. Now either connect a camera directly through the USB Pictbridge connector or you can just pop in your memeory card. If using a memory card the pictures come right up on the screen and you scroll to the one you want and push print. Within 43 seconds from the time you hit the button you have a very nice very sharp picture.(even better than a print form your local picture printing loaction) When printing directly from your camera you tell your Pictbridge enabled camera to print and it prints in the same speed from the camera. Now the only down side with printing directly from the camera is that you have to wait for it to completly print before you can take another picture. For our Santa pics we do not have time to wait so I have interfaced my DSLR camera through a computer to speed up the process. So there is the basics in a nut shell but it does more. You can do some basic editing of your pictures like cropping and so forth. There are preloaded boarders you an choose directly from the printer to add a little zip to your pictures. It even has voice prompts, yes you read that correclty voice prompts. You can also choose to print the picture in a few ways like 2 on one page or many thumbnails like a contact sheet. There is software that comes with it but I have not even used it yet. There are differnt types of paper paks that Canon makes for this some with pre printed boarders like for Christmas, or foil print ones that will do a gold or silver type boarder. The pictures will last for many years they are rated for 100 years before fading also these pictures can be completly submerged in water and will not destroy them. So go give it a go you will not be sorry that you purchased this.

This printer seemed good at first but soon, the paper would not feed without fiddling. Now it's ruined. The first time I tried to change the ink cartridge, I must have put it in backwards and now it won't come out of the printer. It slid in easily so there was no warning it was in wrong until it was too late. No warning in the manual, in fact, there was not even good instructions in the manual. It broke down right as I was trying to make photo invitations to a party. I'm so mad.DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRINTER.

I use this as a stand-alone photo printer, i.e. I don't have it hooked up to a computer, for printing a few pictures for friends and family when I'm at parties or family gatherings. It is small and compact, so I don't have any problems packing it up and taking it with my other photo equipment. I don't have a battery pack as I can generally find an outlet to use.The photo quality is good, not great. You really need to keep your photo paper clean and lint free. The first photo I print generally has several lint lines on it; following photos get better. I find this type of printer to be better than ink-jet types in terms of photo durability. I have an HP all-in-one photo rated printer, and the photos will smear if water gets on the photo. These hold up fine against water. It takes a bit of time for a photo to print out, about a minute. Not too bad, and the kids like to watch it as it passes through the different colors. Just make sure the younger ones don't grab the photo while it is still printing. It's also fun to look at the spent dye film, so there's some entertainment value there.Good enough for what I do.

One of the best things I liked before I bought this was the low cost of the Printer and most of all, the low cost of the supplies (You can find 108 prints for less than $20). The quality this printer puts out, is incredible and instant. You cannot go wrong with this this printer if you want the quality of a photo lab and the convenience of instant gratification right at your fingertips. If you wish to see a demonstration of how this printer works, visit YouTube and search for Canon Selphy CP800 photo printer. You will get to see exactly how long it takes to produce a photo from start to finish. I also like that you don't have to rely on your computer to print. You can print from a number of different memory cards. The last printer I had was a Sony Dye Sublimation printer and strickly connected to the PC only and relied on software made for Windows XP. When Windows Vista came along and Sony decided not to support drivers for the printer in Windows Vista. I was left with a useless piece of electronics. With this Canon, you can print from a variety of sources so you are in good shape when it comes to changes. I buy smarter these days than I use to, mostly from learning hard lessons like that Sony incident. I try hard not to make the same mistakes twice. This printer is a good purchase and I feel I've made a good decision in buying it. You will too!

This printer does exactly what it is advertised to do.It is easy to set up. It is easy to use. The photographs looks very good. The 4 x 6 photos print in about a minute. Supposedly they last for many, many years. The viewing screen is large enough and looks good. There are basic operations, such as red eye reduction and back-light correction that are useful and easy to use. You can also print in black and white or sepia which is something I like to do, so I appreciate that ability. The owner's manual makes sense and is easy to comprehend, and is not overly complicated. Inserting the ink cartridge and the paper is easy.I didn't hook this printer up to my computer. I use it with memory cards. It is very easy to use with memory cards. I have not and do not plan to plug it into my computer, so I have no experience with that ability of the machine. In short, this thing does exactly what the Amazon description and Canon advertising says it will do.The only problem I see is the cost of the prints. Each 4 x 6 print will cost about 25-30 cents, which isn't overly high, but it is more than twice what I can get prints made for in local stores. Add the cost of the machine, and that will be pretty expensive. However, that cost isn't any surprise, as it can be figured BEFORE you buy this machine. My wife has commandeered this machine to use for "scrap booking" and she finds it very useful to be able to get any picture she wants, when she wants it, by sticking a memory card in the machine and printing out the few pictures she wants. And she doesn't have to wait around for someone else to develop the pictures and get them back to us. The machine is also very compact and easy to carry around with all of her other scrap booking stuff when she goes to her scrap booking "parties." For that type of use, this is an excellent machine. As I have had this machine for less than a month, I can not comment on its long-term reliability, but it does seem to be built very well. However, the only other Canon printer I have ever owned did not fare so well in long term reliability, so that does concern me. (Note in the past, if you search my reviews, I have given a Canon printer a 1-star review because it died way too soon.)Personally, I would like a machine that prints 5 x 7's. If I was buying a printer, I would buy one that has the ability to print 5 x 7's. But I was given this machine, so I can't really complain about that.To sum up, this machine appears to be an excellent choice for anyone who wants 4 x 6 prints. It works exactly as Canon says it does. It works well. It makes very good prints. But I think the per-print cost to be a bit high, so I knocked the rating down to four stars.

Well I have to say that I am very impress with the quality of the pictures. I personally think that the photos are great & maybe even better than any other place that develops photos. It is very easy to install to your computer. The con is that it doesn't come in with the USB cable for your PC; you need to buy that separate.

This printer could not be any easier to load "dye sub ink" or paper. Makes beautiful prints with one touch of a button in under a minute. I was concerned when I read some reviews about not being able to print post processed photo's. I use a Canon DSLR with "L" lenses and shoot only in RAW so print quality is very important to me. Although you can print RAW right from the camera attached to the printer via USB, you can not print RAW from a SD card, must be JPEG from SD cards. I post process my RAW pictures in Lightroom 3 and then save as a JPEG photo and as long as the EXIF information remains with the image the instructions say you can print the photo. I then drag and drop the post processed JPEG photo onto a thumb drive inserted into a USB port on my computer. I take the thumb drive and plug into the printer and the printer recognizes the thumb drive and you choose what you want to print from the little LCD screen on the printer. I have had a few inkjet printers but always found some problems when wanting to print a photo after non use for a time. Seems I was always out of ink on one of the five colors or the jets were clogged, always something. I hope this dye sub system will eliminate all of that. So far (5 pictures) I can't find anything about it not to like, the prints are very high quality. I never installed the software that came with the printer as I have all sorts of photo programs, so I can't comment on that.

I purchased this printer last July (2011) and it worked as long as I had Mac OS 10.6 on my Macbook Pro. Before installing OS 10.7, I called Canon and inquired if and when the printer drivers for Mac OS 10.7 would be available. I was told last summer that it was in the works and to expect it soon. Here it is late February and it still is not available. Since I needed to go ahead with the 10.7 install, the printer is worthless unless I go direct with a card. That defeats the purpose of using photo editing software. I recently wrote a review of the printer on Canon's website and it was rejected. They told me to submit it again. Again it was rejected. Their guidelines, which I followed, do not state that all reviews must be positive. Apparently they don't follow their own guidelines and do not want any negative reviews. I am very disappointed in Canon and most likely will not purchase their products in the future.

According to several reviews for the Canon BU-30 Bluetooth Adapter for PIXMA MX850 that's required to make this printer connect to other devices via Bluetooth, it isn't compatible with IPhone. This is flat-out false advertising, if you ask me. This Amazon page says 'Print directly from your memory cards, compatible digital camera, USB Flash Drive or wirelessly from a Bluetooth enabled device' (and it's not even clear that you have to lay out an extra $50 for the adapter to make that work).Literally millions of people own IPhones, including myself. I ordered this product as a Gold Box special thinking (thanks to the misleading product description) that I'd use it around the house to print out photos from my phone. Good thing I procrastinated in ordering ink, paper and other supplies.I'll return it as soon as it gets here.EDIT: There's a Canon IPhone app that makes it possible for a person to print to a Canon printer from IPhone, but the list of supported Canon printers **does NOT include** the Selphy series. For more information on the handful of Canon printers that *are* supported by this app, search for "Canon" on the Apple Store. Update: I finally ordered an HP printer, which prints like a charm from the IPhone using the 'Print' button in the phone's browser.EDIT, April 2011: Edit to address issues with people who don't think it's important that this printer doesn't work as advertised: This item says very clearly in its description that you can print from a mobile device using Bluetooth. If it's not compatible with a device that currently has over 25% of the smartphone sales in the U.S., that information should be available up front, not buried in fine print. I suspect you'd feel differently if if you personally ordered this device, only to find it didn't work as advertised and you then had to go to the trouble - and pay the shipping - to send it back. I'd want someone to warn ME if the item description contained a substantial portion of misleading information, but if you think that's "unhelpful" then hit that button if you must.

UPDATE: They did release an update and it worked with Lion and now works with Mountain Lion. While it took a while to get this update... I am back to printing photos that last and seem to be similar quality to photo processing centers. This printer makes nice presents for my family.Old 1 star review:Very disappointed... Canon does not support it's products for very long. While it prints decent quality and was priced fair. Not being able to go from my computer directly into the printer is a big let down.
