I should explain that, no matter how much investigating you do, you'll never know if you made the right decision. When I bought the Olympus, the choices were limited to perhaps four 3+ megapixel cameras. Now, with a hundred choices, your chances of getting the ideal camera are slim IF you know digital cameras at all. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
A620 pros: Easy to use. Menus are well laid out, though the primary button on the back of the camera could have "easier" more readable buttons. But once you get used to them, they're fine. Love the various special effects that you can add to your pictures. And even the movie mode will give a decent movie if you have a 1 gig card.
The LCD is fantastic, and revolved 180 degrees. Not that I expected to take a self-portrait, but I actually have used the easy-to-see (in most any light) LCD for all kinds of shots.
The viewfinder (a must for those of you who are looking at any digital camera) is good, and off by only a degree or two.
Pictures are sharp and the lens is as good as Olympus Zuiko, and that's going some.
Before I forget, I'd give Canon an A+ on its software. It is downright simple and though I might have to use Thumbs+ or Photoshop for minor tweaking, this software is a snap on layouts and printing. Many who have written about Canon's software call it "weak" or "for beginners only." Well, I'm no beginner, and it's a pleasure to get a composite print or contact sheet set up and printed in 5 minutes.
Portraits and landscapes are excellent. Closeups...see below.
It's fast.
It has the feel of a 35mm camera. It has some weight and it's comfortable.
The zoom is very good.
Cons: Can't turn off flash in Auto mode.
The macro is trickier than the Olympus and doesn't always produce good results. One trick is that you press the shutter button half-way before taking the picture, and you'll get better focus. Half of my pictures are macros, and I've been somewhat disappointed. I think that going to the manual mode is the solution, and that may put off most who go the digital route for more than just point and shoot.
The warning light for using a tripod seemingly comes on 80% of the time. Admittedly, we've had rain in California since I bought the camera, but I have no trouble keeping the camera steady and, in low light suituations, letting the flash do the rest.
I'd recommend the camera, but if you're looking for one that you can just tuck in your shirt pocket, this isn't for you.
Range within each option is limited but will cover typical needs for a snapshot camera.
Quality is great except in low light. High ISO is almost useless.
Summary
Pros
Very sharp crisp pictures
Very compact
10x zoom
Good image stabilization
Good quality video
Cons
Problems handling action shots
Not too great in low light
I haven't actually figured out the face detection yet, maybe i'm a little slow........but hopefully that works well......
The controls are easy to use and all functions are easy to find...
Only thing I don't like, is there is no histogram on the display screen while taking a picture.....it only shows up when you review a photo
I like the idea of the flip up flash....its good to not have to worry about the flash firing when not wanted......
I got the camera for $235.00.....it was definitely worth it....ordered if from amazon for $259, plus i had a $25 reward certificate from amazon, so put that towards the camera to......
you will need to buy a memory card and batteries, and i also suggest lcd proctors to put on the lcd screen....
I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a quality digital camera with lots of manual controls....
It is a large camera compared to a lot of other digital cameras, so if small size is important..this camera isn't for you........
BUT, takes only about 30 pics with 2 AA batteries. I thought it was just bad batteries but after several hundred pics now it is obvious an average is about 30 pics per battery change. Have ordered rechargeable's and will see how long they last.
Hey CANON, It really, really, really gets old to have to carry batteries in my pockets all the time?!?!
I love love this camera..is easy to use.. has all I want and all I was looking for..plus a great price..is perfect!
I love it!
The macro functions of the camera especially for movie clips is brilliant and deserve high praise. The swing out screen is an awesome feature for being able to see the screen way below or overhead, it is a well designed feature and often will cause interest from those around you @ events. Although having experienced the Elph series I thought this would be a good choice & overall it's a fairly good camera and an excellent value.
overall 8 out of 10 would be my rating.
I purchased this Camera by looking into the positive reviews that every other site had. Here are the problems
- This has just a reasonable picture quality. But this severely fails in dim light. Believe me, My Nikon coolpix 3200 is far more better in dim light. I also compared the shots with Kodak ZD 710 and Kodak is miles better than SX 100.
- The color distinction is very poor. A blue object in low light looks like a black object. I tried with all possible night settings. But unfortunately nothing worked.
- The camera performs superior than others in terms of focusing while zoomed and clarity of zoomed photos are better
- The flash recharge time of 4-5 secs is unacceptable
- The only advantages I see are battery life looks to be decent, and this camera does not need a lens cover and is 'relatively' compact
I lose 10% restocking fee on return, still I would prefer to return this.
