This isn't the slimmest or tiniest compact digital camera, but it's still easily pocketable (jacket, not shirt!) and for the price, produces great pics in a compact form. The screen is a good size and nice and bright and the extra bit on the zoom makes a difference - most of the competition stops at 3x. The colour choice allows a bit of personalisation.
There are an amazing number of presets, but you won't need most of them, and the most important ones are the most accessible. Anyone unused to digital cameras or who is a bit of a technophobe upgrading might find the menus a bit of a fiddle, but for most purposes, they won't be used much.
Pictures are bright and sharp with comparatively little distortion. Colours are bright and zingy - not quite true - but the bit of extra saturation makes them very attractive.
All in all, a bargain little camera.

This camera is great. It takes beautiful pictures black and white sepia and colored. close-up are unbelievable and the color is perfect. Price was within my range and delivery was fast.

Still taking some time getting used to this camera, but it is handy and easy to use. Cannot back light the picture in Auto setting and constantly changing settings. Not for the professional photographer, but a good point and shoot. I liked it because it still uses conveniently available alkaline or (NI-MH) rechargeable batteries. Zoom and LED are good and it's a good value for the price.

Easy to use, logical controls, and it uses regular AA batteries.
Surprisingly good videos and 4X Optical zoom at a bargain price.

I replaced my Canon 570 with the PowerShot A590IS. I am not a techie, just a point and shoot picture taker. I lost too many pictures due to the shakes or using the wrong mode. The "Easy" mode on the A590 takes all the mystery out of picture taking. As I get more familiar with the camera, I will use other functions, but already my photos are much better and I have more confidence in using it....PLUS it costs less than the camera it replaces!!

I bought this camera before going to Vegas, and it really proved wonderful..I clicked all the casino pictures at night, and they have come really good..good camera in good price..

I did alot of research before buying this camera. Being that I am not camera savy I wanted something that I could point and shoot and get brilliant pictures. I was in the market to get the Canon A560 but they were sold out at all the stores in my area. The clerk showed me the A470 and I was instantly impressed by it. The A470 was easy to learn how to use. I downloaded the pictures for the first time today and was impressed by the quality. It doesn't matter if the photos are taken inside or outdoors - the color is vibrant and the image is crisp and clear. I am having so much fun with this camera - probably even driving my kids crazy by taking pictures all the time. I think anyone who purchases this camera will be very happy with it.

It's a great camera for newbies like my parents. They can easily use the camera to its best advantage, and aren't tripped up by any doo-hickies. They love their Christmas present.

I previously purchased a PowerShot A640 and was so impressed with it that I purchased the A740 for my granddaughter. For the price, it's hard to beat the Canon. Many features to allow you to shoot any way you want, or just set it on Auto and point and shoot.

My only complaint with this camera is the flash recharge rate; it is slow. It only uses 2 AA batteries. Beyond that, I like the size, the big view screen and its ease of operation.

I have had this camera for a month and it works great. After reading the review I was some what nervous because of the negatives but I so far do not see any. The picture quality is great and I hear no noises?! I highly recommed this product. Fabulous Price!!!

I'm not a fan of the tiny cameras. Have 2 DSLR's (D200's) but felt I needed an easier carry around camera for hiking, fishing and vacations. A friend had the Canon A470 and raved about the image quality, simplicity amd price. Got one from Amazon and love it!! Not too small and a quick picture taker. Perfect for someone with rather large hands. Priced at a little over 100 bucks because it does not have a huge zoom or IS, but it does a great job for basic picture taking.

I purchased this camera after exploring several digitals, looking for the best macro (close up) capabilities. This turned out to work well for what I needed it for, which is to take extreme close up shots of gemstone rings.
Others didn't like the rechargible batteries, but I won't be using this camera for much else but taking shots right at home. Because of this, I don't use the battery power at all, but purchased a compatible AC/DC cord on eBay for under $20.00. Actually, a seller had several brand new Canon ACK800 cords, not just some no-brand item, and this turned out to be a great accessory (and a lot cheaper than the ACK800 package on the Canon website).
If you want a camera that has more adjustments and features than a point and shoot camera, but don't want to pay for an expensive SLR, this camera is it ... and at an affordable price.
P.S. My photography buff uncle gave me a thumbs up on this purchase!!

I think this is a great camera fr the money. The specs are great for a reasonable price. It does not have a viewfinder window instead the lcd screen is the window. It took a little bit to get used too, I am happy I got this camera.

This camera has met every need of our family in our picture taking and videos.
Pictures are crystal clear. Typical easy off load by cord or memory card of pictures and videos to any computer or photo program. We have 4 computers with a different photo program on each one.
You do have to read the manual. This is not an out of the box, point and shoot camera. There are many many features available, and I recommend rereading the manual after three months to find out which of the many features you have not used, but could be using.
Price was fair, normal cost for this good a camera.
My wife has used it extensively and loves it.
We our "senior citizens" therefore if we can master it, anyone should be able to.
Very pleased.
I recommend that you purchase a larger memory card than the one that comes with the camera so you will have plenty of storage space.

Amazing versatility in a small, lightweight camera. Uses only 2 AA batteries; we had been accustomed to needing 4. User manual is a PDF file. You'll need to purchase a larger capacity memory card, as we found out on Thanksgiving day.
