Pricing point, features, full manual control, high quality 6x zoom lens, true image stabilisation and eye-level viewfinder, all wrapped up in a sleek, easy-to-hold package. Add in wide-angle and tele-converter lenses, and it's the perfect advanced-amateur camera. Image quality is spot on -- perfect colour rendition, good dynamic range, noise-free high ISOs, sharp and fast auto focus, and accurate auto white balance round out its technical capabilities.
The A720 IS is a camera that needs to be grabbed ASAP before it disappears forever!

Recently I was shopping for a not-too-expensive digicam for college-going son, and decided I'd "upgrade" to a A720IS, and give him my A710IS. For awhile I had both cameras here. There is a reason the msrp on the 720 is less $$ and it weighs 1/2 oz less -- the 720 is made in China and feels more plastic and less solid. The 710 is made in Japan, has a more sturdy body, better fit and finish. In fact, my 720 grip panel wiggled a little and squeaked until I added a tiny tad of Gorilla Glue in a strategic spot.
Performance is very good, essentially the same for both cameras. Easy to use, takes fantastic photos, in-camera menus easy to use (I like Canon software logic). Flash recycle time may be a tad faster on the 720, but still pretty slow. Goes for 400-700 shots on a pair of AA batteries. (Use Lithiums or, better yet, rechargeable NiMH Hybrids. They rock!) I highly recommend this camera, either the more-solid 710 or the less-expensive 720. Size and performance are essentially the same. 7.1mp vs 8mp...no big deal. Digix II vs III...no big deal (II might even be better, and there are hacks available to allow you to shoot RAW and add other features) Get a 2GB or 4GB SD card, a small case for the camera, and take it everywhere with you so you'll never miss another "kod*k" moment.

THE ONLY DRAW BACK I HAVE SEEN IS SHOOTING INDOORS, THE TIME ITS TAKES BETWEEN PICTURES WITH FLASH, I WOULD LIKE TO SHOOT FASTER THEN IT ALLOWS, BUT WITH MORE TO LEARN ABOUT THE USE OF MY NEW CAMERA I'M SURE THERE IS A CURE FOR IT.
I HAVE SHOT OVER 2 THOUSAND PICTURES AND NOT DISAPPOINTED IN A ONE, ACCEPT FOR A FEW HUMAN ERAS.
I AM VERY GLAD I TOOK WEEKS TO PICK MY CAMERA THIS CAMERA WAS WORTH THE WAITE.
BATTERY LIFE IS GOOD, I PURCHASES GOOD BATERIES AND THEY EVEN CAME WITH A CHARGER THAT IS CAN ALSO USE IN MY VEHICLE, SO I AM NEVER WITH OUT CHARGED BATTERIES.
THE CANNON IS A LITTLE HEAVIER THAN THE PREVOUS CAMERAS I HAVE OWNED, BUT I LIKE THAT IT MAKES ME A LITTLE MORE STEADY WITH MY SHOTS.
PICTURES OUTDOOR ARE SUPER GREAT, AND THE ZOOM IS GOOD WITH GOOD PICTURE QUALILTY AS WELL.
AS FOR NOW, CANNON CAMERAS WILL BE MY ONLY PURHCASES IN THE FUTURE.

It had everything I was looking for and more:
-A viewfinder (for those bright days and when trying to conserve the batteries by turning off the LCD, easily I might add)
-6x Optical zoom, with the option of turning off digital zoom
-Image stabilization
-Capability of using an SDHC card for faster picture taking and high storage capacity
-The ability to change the volumes of all the sounds of the camera. I can still have the sound on to hear video playback, but can turn down and off the sounds for start-up, button pressing, shutter click, etc.
-Fully retractable lens, without a need for a lens cap
-Quick startup time
-Capability of adding another lens to it if I so choose, though it seems most add-on lenses will block the flash
-Very small size, smaller than I thought it would be after seeing all the pictures. Easily fits in a pocket, and the quick startup time allows me to get the picture I want without having to keep the camera in my hands at all times
-Remembers my LCD settings after shutdown
-Very decent video quality
-Large LCD screen
I have noticed that some of my indoor pictures seem a little bright, I haven't fully read through the manual to see if that can be changed. Overall though it isn't really noticeable, and I got rave reviews from those I shared my holiday pictures with. Many people asked what camera I had, and even had someone go out and buy the same one after playing with mine.
A quality camera with a ton of features for a relatively low price. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a great pocket sized camera!

Pros:
-Image stabilization works very well
-Lots of auto and manual modes
-Face tracking feature works great
-640X480@30FPS movies
-Optical zoom is sufficient for most situations
-Optical viewfinder is very nice to have when you can't see the LCD in direct sunlight
-When you are reviewing your shots, you can "zoom out" and look at 9 thumbnails at a time, then page through your photos and find a certain shot very quickly.
Cons:
-User programmable button is very limited (there are only about 6 things you can choose the button to do, and only one or possibly two of them are useful to me)
-Depending on how artistic you are trying to be with your composition, the face tracking can be a pain (i.e. trying to focus on an object in the background, the camera keeps picking something in the foreground for focus). You can disable it, but it involves about 5 steps.
My only real gripe is that I wish I could put the focus mode on the programmable button so that I could switch between face-detect and center focusing(both points above).
You get what you pay for with this camera. There are a lot more options (full manual shutter, aperture, white balance, iso, and focus controls) than with some of the cheaper models, but this camera definitely shoots at lower quality than a digital SLR.

I went to Lawrence Photo in Springfield, MO to talk to them about the Nikon D40 and Canon Xti.....
I wasn't ready to buy a DSLR yet but had some questions to get prepared.
I was looking and drooling over there selections and was telling Jerry that I was looking for something that my wife could take pictures and video of her son when he was playing the drums.... She was wanting something that would take more than the 15 seconds the s110 did.
Anyway he recommended Canon's new a720.....WOW
I am very impressed with this camera......I am not sure she will get to use it much at least until the new has warn off...
I love this little Big Camaera.....it has so many features of the larger camera's.
It has apeture priority, shutter priority, manual, program and of course auto....
I have had fun just playing with the settings and taking pictures in different modes....this camera is amazing....shutter speeds from 15seconds to 1/2000....
This camera is ready to shoot as soon as you turn it on.....just push the button and by the time you get your finger on the shutter button it is ready to take pictures.
So far I cannot say enough good about this Camera.
I have had it 2 days and it is better than expected.
I am looking forward to many pictures and video's
I hope you find this helpful.
update (9/27/2013) the battery door on this camera failed after many openings and closings the little plastic latches broke I tried taping it to get by but it just wouldn't work.......but the camera was also starting to falter in other areas......would stall when trying to take pictures or more of a pause..flash would work part of the time.. but for it's age and for the amount of use it had gotten it I think had faired pretty good...it is now been replaced by a cheap nikon coolpix s6300 and I canon 60d nikon is doing pretty good so far and the 60d is awesome....

My computer would not accept the CD that came with the camera, and regardless of the dire warnings that you "must" download the CD before copying pictures from the camera to the computer, I took a chance and connected the camera to the computer and the pictures went to "My Pictures" in the computer without a hitch.
I seem to be getting about 50 shots, many with flash, with 2 AA batteries.

Extra storage in the top of the case for memory cards and on in the front pouch for extra batteries. Includes belt loop on the back of the case three D shaped fastenings for the carrying strap and shoulder strap

It has a great set of manual features that are easy to navigate. If you appreciate great quality images and don't want to lug around an SLR this is a great choice. The video quality is good as long as you don't use the zoom lens. That works fine for me in a pinch.
The only two things that are missing are a wider lens - I would have preferred 28mm and almost went with the Lumix for that reason alone. Also, the cycle time on the flash could be faster - but that's no big deal.
The "kids and pets" special mode really works and eliminates a lot of the shutter lag that is a problem with digital cameras. So, that's a big plus.
All in all - it's a winner and I would not hesitate to purchase even at the list price. I got mine from OneCall here on Amazon and they shipped it very fast.

The reviews were "right on". They said this camera was easy to use, dependable, easy to learn (which I needed as I purchased it for an upcoming vacation and only had a couple of days to tinker with it before departing) and takes WONDERFUL quality photos.
I never did get a chance to "tinker" with it before we left, I took it out of it's box, glanced at the instructions, packed it in the carry on bag, and away we went!
When we reached our destination, I was a bit worried as I had chosen not to bring the instructions, it was not an issue. It was so user friendly I was taking beautiful pictures with-in minutes! I am sure I have lots to learn about it yet, and only took advantage of a few of it's many features, but the pictures I got were breath taking!
I took one of the couple that went with us and had it made into an 8 x 10 for them, and framed it as it turned out so nice. A visiter to our home asked why I had a picture of "those people" before I gave it to the couple. I told the visiter about taking the picture and making it for our friends. They were astounded to say the least! They thought it was a professional portrait =) I did good LOL
I am VERY pleased with the camera, it does not "eat" batteries like so many low quality cameras do, it takes awesome photos, easy to use, looks nice, I cannot say enough how happy I am with it!
If it got ruined today, I would order another exactly like it tomorrow.

Some strong points include:
-Amazing picture quality
-low cost
-easy operation
-extremely large array of advanced features and controls
The Negatives:
-Durability
-Battery life
I had to turn picture preview and anything that uses battery life off to get as many pictures as possible out of it. Gets between 80-150 pictures off of one set of batteries. Battery life aside, this is a great camera at a great price.

I am very happy so far with my purchase.
The Cons:
1- Short battery life! Take along extras! It is nice that it takes easily available AA batteries, though.
2- It seems to have a fairly long flash recharge time. I have found myself shooting back-to-back shots and often the flash is not ready, yet. Not a big problem, but I have to remind my self to be more patient between shots, at least for a few extra seconds.
3- Memory card that ships with the camera (16 megs) is WAY too small for an 8 mega pixel camera, maybe 8-10 shots. Buy a 1gb card or bigger when you purchase the camera. You are going to need it and memory is cheap right now!
Overall I would give the Canon 4 1/2 stars if that was an option.
