I purchased this to record sporting events and have not been disappointed. HD to the max and would buy this again in a minute. Works great with iMovie as well

I bought this thinking I was getting a great camera - and it is BUT if you have ever used a Sony or other camcorder, think twice before buying this - it is VERY user UNfriendly. I spent hours trying to figure it out, and have never in my life had to carry the book with me to do just about anything other than simply record. It's extremely complicated and I would love to return it. Video looks great (can't get it off the camera though). And you have to install their programs to get the video. Don't count on getting snap shots easily either. And battery life is pitiful. I got the protection plan and I see this getting dropped in the near future.

I normally would do a ton of research before buying a product and did the same before buying this. And my research paid off.. This HD camcorder is an amazing device worth every penny. I am not a professional recorder but after using it, I found that this is a true professional camcorder at the consumer level. At the begininning, I felt that there were too many options and controls, but after getting used to it, I realized that this is what makes this camcorder an excellent product. It has so many customizable features and adjustable controls that makes each filming a perfect fit for different background exposure and noise. The video quality is outstanding and especially better at low light. The 24p recording made me go crazy, with its cinema like quality that was unmatched by any other camcorder I have. The CMOS pro sensor is the heart and soul of this device and I am really impressed with it. Besides, I love the 3.5 inch screen which makes the filming easy.I do have some minor complaints, but not enough to bring down a star. The body is made from plastic and may not feel the price you pay for. But, hey, who cares. It is still sturdy and strong. I wish they would have given a long lasting battery with it as a defalut, than we buying it seperately. All in all, I am really happy with this camcorder and I think I made the best decision after going through extensive painstaking research.

After testing several cameras first hand (thanks to gracious return policies) I found the crown jewel in the Vixia HF G10. I used the Sony CX360, Panasonic TM900, and the Canon Vixia M41, this was the winner. Granted, it is more expensive than any of those, but well worth it if you are looking for a no regrets purchase. Here is the reason I didn't like the other models, in case anyone is interested:Sony CX360- virtually no manual settings. Image was decent. Low light was nice, but a bit noisy. Was left unimpressed.Panasonic TM900- thought I had found a winner here. Was able to get it for $599. Nice mix of Auto and mostly manual controls. The focus ring was great. Takes great still pictures. Outdoor performance, outstanding. Filming indoors with room lighting was terrible. Even with all the lights turned on, images were too dark and grainy. This was a deal breaker for me, especially after researching the Canons.Canon Vixia M41- Auto mode was decent. Nice but limited manual controls. LCD was small and not high res. Indoor low light was amazing and outdoor was great as well. Would have kept this one and been satisfied, but decided to go for the G10. Why? Read on...The G10's boatload of manual controls, the superior lens to the M41, the low light performance, the focus ring, the high resolution LCD, the sound mixing, the ability to record in native 24p... I could go on and on.60p is the BIG selling point on other models, but frankly it's more trouble than it's worth. 60p is amazing, but you'll only be able to get that when played directly from the camera. The rest of the time you'll be likely converting to 30fps anyway. So, in the end, I would highly recommend this camera for anyone who wants an excellent all around camera that will challenge you with all its options. You can go as auto as you want or as manual as you can handle. The Vixia M41 is a great alternative for anyone not worried too much about manual controls, but wants the same quality video.

I got an excellent price on this camera and the Panasonic HDC-TM900; so being retired with much time on my hands I decided to buy both, do a side by side comparison and then sell the one that I felt was the poorer performer. I set the Panasonic at 60P and the Canon at 24P (Canon doesn't have 60p--first advantage for Panasonic). I then burned the footage to Blu Ray disks using an LG Blu Ray burner and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11. I shot each scene with one camera then immediately switched to the other shooting the same scene. I shot indoors at night with just low ambient light, then in the same room the next day with sunlight coming through the windows; and finally outdoors in both cloudy and sunny conditions. First the indoor night results. No comparison. The Canon was much better. Clearer, brighter and more vivid colors. Really no comparison at all. The Canon also out performed the Panasonic the next day shooting indoors during the day. Again not even close.the results outdoors in full sunlight where different. They were close, but I felt the Panasonic had slightly more vivid colors and better contrast. The Canon was very close and certainly also excellent. I don't think anyone would be unhappy with the results from either camera. Shooting with the sun behind the clouds I could see no difference between the cameras. Both superb. Both cameras produced needle sharp macro footage in the sun. The Panasonic focused closer for the macro shots. Indoors, tiny print on the kitchen appliances and on soda bottles on the counter, filmed at night and during the day, was sharper with the Canon. The Canon accepts 2 memory cards. When one is full you can have the camera instantly switch to the other so there is no interruption in the recording; or you can record to both cards simultaneously for an instant backup. Nice feature.I decided to keep the Canon and sold the Panasonic (for not much less than I paid). It was not an easy decision, but since I do a lot of shoting indoors where the Canon was clearly superior, I felt it was the right decision. Still, the Panasonic is much more compact and has so much going for it that I just might have second thoughts. The Panasonic is also about $400 to $600 less.10/18/11 ADDENDUM: Since I wrote the above review I had a chance to use the Canon for more extensive filming. I now have no doubts about this purchase. The results were superb in all lighting situations. It is well worth the additional money.

I've owned the Canon HFS200 camcorder for a while, and recently decided to upgrade. Not that the HFS200 isn't a great camera - it's just that the quality gap between it and my still cameras seems to be more and more noticeable. Dynamic range and high ISO noise, for example, are more like a point-and-shoot with the HFS200 than with a high-end DSLR.Looking at the choices, it seems like there are two ways to go: wait for prosumer models like the new Canon HF G10, or take the step and invest in true professional gear. The HF G10 has a lot going for it. I like that Canon actually went to a lower resolution, optimized for HD at 1920 x 1080. This means each pixel site is larger, giving you much better low light performance and dynamic range. For this feature alone, I'd recommend the HF G10 over the older models. In addition, the HF G10 offers better battery performance, has 32GB of internal memory plus dual SD slots, and a more sophisticated lens than previous models. The new lens features a rounded, 8 blade diaphragm, making those out of focus parts of your scenes look smoother - no more out of focus hexagons, common with the older lenses. The new lens is wonderful in manual operation, if you want to manually focus as you follow a subject. Many of the other features - image stabilization, auto focus accuracy and so on - aren't appreciably different than the previous generation products (which were already quite excellent). In terms of construction quality, the HF G10 is about as good as anything you'll find in the prosumer space. It's solid when you pick it up, but lots of plastic parts, and I doubt it would survive getting caught in a dust storm or rain shower. Still, the viewfinder and built-in monitor are high quality and make it easy to frame and compose your shots.Picture and sound quality are of course stunning, and it's easy to import video into your favorite editing software.About the only hesitation I had was around the video codec and bit rate. Many people evaluate cameras based on resolution (1920x1080/30p, for example), but another important dimension is bitrate, since that gives you a sense of how heavily compressed the images are. You can have 1920x1080/30p at many different bitrates...consumer camcorders do 10-18 Mbps, higher end products tend to go up to 20-25 Mbps and broadcast quality systems are 40 Mbps and up. The HF G10 is 24 Mbps at its highest setting.Where the dilemma comes in is that Canon's pro-grade XF100 HD (for instance) is based on essentially the exact same technology as the HF G10, but it includes 4:2:2 color sampling and a codec that goes up to 50 Mbps. It's also more expensive, however. If the HF G10 offered the codec found in the XF100, I'd give it my unconditional recommendation. As is, while the HF G10 is by all measures a wonderful product, you still might want to consider the higher-end XF100 for absolutely best image quality. Definitely recommended, with that one footnote, however.

This is my first video camera and I have to say that I have loved every minute of using it so far. The HD picture quality is great, much better than other cameras I considered. There are lots a features, but its not over complicated for someone like me who is just learning the ropes. The only issue I have had is it can be hard to see the view screen if you are outside in bright sun light. However I think this is a common issue with outdoor use.Overall I recommend this camera for anyone looking for a great picture at a reasonable price.

I bought this camcorder for it's top notch video performance and it certainly has delivered on that front. The HD imagery is stunning. But the camera is not without problems, some of them really stupid. First problem is the on-off switch which is in an odd place and is recessed meaning you have to use your thumbnail to turn it on or off. Not a real serious problem but it could be better placed and have a detent action, which it doesn't. A real serious problem is the record button. It's placement is good but it does not have a detent feel so you havn't a clue if it went into record or not. There is a little green dot on the screen that turns red when in the record mode but the fold-out screen is useless in daylight and the external viewfinder is so small you can't see the little red dot. There is an auduio beep for record-on and a double beep for record-off but in the heat of action one doesn't hear these little audio clues. AND, last but not least by a long shot is the special function buttons on the left side of the fold out screen - just where your thumb grabs the fold out screen. The upper special function button comes factory programmed for Manual Focus, and once invoked thye camera stays in manual focus when the camera is turned off and on! This is so dumb I can't believe a top camera outfit like Canon would do such a stupid thing. On a recent trip to Cuba I lost numerous scenes due to being out-of-focus not realizing I was turning the manual focus function on and off. Grrr.....But, all that said, it's a really great camcorder and, knowing it's problems I would definitely recommend it!

Great video but some rather serious audio problems:When the mic gain is set to "manual" you have to use a setting of no higher than 10 or a compressor will take over at higher levels totally defeating the idea of "manual" gain. In fact, if you are in "manual" mic gain mode and you run the level at 100 the result will be MORE AGC than if you were in automatic gain mode--mind blowingly STUPID. Not only that, but clipping occurs when the meter is showing 4 units BELOW DIGITAL ZERO. In other words if you follow the meter and allow peaks to go to 0 on the meter, you will be CLIPPING the audio like crazy. Thanks Canon! Your audio designers SUCK.Most video people know less than nothing about audio so I'm sure nobody else has actually measured the performance of the audio section as I did when I discovered this problem. Oh well. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

I have been taking vacation videos for a few years with a $250 Samsung and it worked without problems, but I wanted something better. I studied this camera and its reviews before I shopped for the best price and bought it. What a difference. I have taken several videos with it and burned them to BD. Movies came out fantastic on big screen TV. The only problem I face now is wether to use Auto mode or Manual. The Auto takes such good movies anywhere, but you can do even better in manual mode, especially indoors, where you can set the white balance for every particular lighting situation. This camera has worked perfectly since I opened the box and would recommend it to anyone.

This is a great camera if you get one that works correctly! It's easy to use, has lots of manual settings, has a large sensor that is very good in low light and the video quality is great. Unfortunately on mine the left 1/4 of the frame was always out of focus when zoomed out. Called Canon and they said no problem, send us your brand new camera and we will fix it or send you a refur. NO, I paid for a new camera, not one that has been reworked or used be someone else and returned!!!I sent it back for a full refund to Amazon (Thank you!)

This little beauty takes video equal to my $5000.00 HDR-FX 1, at less than one fourth the size and weight. I love the ability to take photos at the same time as shooting video. The only problem is understanding the instruction book. It takes a little fooling around to figure out how everything works. We also have two high line Canon EOS digital cameras and have a problem reading instructions. I guess I get in too much of a hurry. The bottom line is this is a supurb video camera and takes excellent stills as well.

This is a high quality (consumer level) digital video camera with a lot of features. Sometimes makes me feel like I need to go to Video Camera School. The 133 page owner's manual has the information in a reasonably straight forward and understandable format, but with so many features, it's sometimes hard to find the one you are looking for. After using the camera for 2 weeks, I discovered that I was doing a lot of panning to cover the field of view I wanted in my videos. The (expensive) solution is to add the Wide Angle Adapter Lens. It ain't cheap but it stops the effect of aiming the camera around like a fire hose to cover the entire scene. I find the "fire hose" effect to be distracting and you don't see it in many professional videos. (With the possible exception of "Blipverts".) Adding the wide angle adapter lens almost doubles the weight of the camera. The battery that comes with the camera is about 1/2 the capacity of the "normal" size battery. I would recommend the BP-819 battery which I use as my primary battery. I use the BP-808 battery that came with the camera as a back-up battery.

My previous camera is a Canon FS31. A good little camera, but I was always disappointed in the image quality (which is by no means poor! I just wanted better, clearer.)The FS31 was the victim of a ripe fruit attack (don't ask), and I was given the opportunity to get the camera I REALLY wanted.I've only used the G10 a couple of times thus far, as I'm afraid I'm going to harm it. But the image quality is beautiful and there are so many things you can do and control. Very satisfied, I am.

I have owned this camera now for almost a year now, and although I think the video is stunning, especially in low light the way other reviewers have stated, it seems that few owners have commented on the compressed audio quality. To me, any high end consumer camcorder such as the HF G10 should have no less than uncompressed, CD-quality, 16-bit PCM 48 kHz audio. Looking into this further, this camcorder has a fixed audio bit rate set at a dismal 256 kbps for both channels. In my experience, AVCHD and mp4, no what what camera and make, all seem to have the characteristic "tinny" sound to them as a result of the low audio recording bit rates. I even tried using the HF G10 with a Rode VideoMic (which btw, sounds great on my tape-based Canon HV30), but it doesn't seem to get rid of the thin sound. This becomes especially critical when recording live music at concert level volumes. I've been an audiophile for over 30 years and I do eventually produce footage to watch on my high end home theater system. When making a direct sound comparison with my older and less expensive bridge camera, the Canon SX1 IS, which uses the .mov format, the HF G10, even at the maximum 24 mbps setting, sounds less natural, especially in fullness and clarity as well as bottom-end bass (and this is also with a built-in stereo microphones on the SX1 IS). I think a lot of this has to do with the sampling rate (over 1450 kbps on the SX1 IS) as the .mov format consumes more memory than either AVCHD and mp4 for the same recording duration (almost 2 times). AVCHD and mp4 may have been good idea to be more efficient with available memory (and perhaps battery life), but not a good idea when it is at the expense of overall image and sound quality. When I contacted Tech Support at Canon, the Rep informed me that the audio bit rate cannot be changed and gave no indication that there will be a firmware update in the future to allow the option for uncompressed linear PCM audio recording.

Was a little hesitant due to the price, but after using it for the last few weeks, I feel it was definitely worth the extra money. By no means am I a professional videographer, but with the auto filming feature, my family thinks I am. Didn't have any problems connecting it to my Mac, was able to create some great Holiday videos.
