I bought this camera after comparing it with the Panasonic in the similar class, the Panasonic reportedly has fan noise issues so I settled for Canon. The other reason I picked canon is because I have some expensive filters already which I use on my Digital camera which I could use on this camcorder as well. I bought this camera to take videos of my recent trip to Vietnam. I also bought 2 32GB class 10 SDHC cards. The camera has 32GB internal memory so that gave me plenty of space. I also took an external hard drive (500GB) and my laptop in case I had to copy over data if my memory fills up. On my month long vacation I shot approximately 12hrs of video @24p in Cinema mode, and I did not run out of space, I could have avoided lugging around the laptop and hard drive. The camera is very easy to use, I did have problems with the zoom button, although I slowed down the zoom speed it would still accelerate too fast if I applied too much pressure on the toggle switch, something that can be fix with practice. In Cinema mode, using Filter 2, I got some stunning colors. The image stabilizer works well, but if you are shooting on the move ie walking and running you might want to consider a camcorder stabilizer like a steadycam merlin. The LCD only consumed slightly more battery compared to the viewfinder, so I ran it on LCD all the time. The battery that comes with the camera is good for 4hrs of shooting, I tend to shoot less than that, so I could recharge every day. But I did carry some after market extended batteries just in case.I use Linux (Ubuntu 11.10), plugged in the camera via USB and it all 3 internal storage drives cleanly mounted, if you mount via usb copying can be slow, if you have an SD card reader you can read the contents directly from the card to your computer much faster, the camera lets you copy internal memory to card in slot B, so once you copied all your data from the SD, you can copy the contents of the internal memory by 1st copying it to SD and then copying to you computer. Since the video was shot in 24p, you have to remove pulldown from the video, mencoder utility in linux can be used to remove pulldown, infact I am converting all my video into H.264 format. Conversion speed is depended on your computer, I have a X86 i5 with 8GB ram, WD 3T HDD, and 1GB of raw data takes 55minutes to convert to H.264 format at (4400 variable bitrate, lower bitrate will be faster but less quality). I have not even opened the packaging on the software that came with the camera, it is useless to me anyway.Pros:* SSD based, 32GB internal + 2 slots for SD cards, lots of space for recording very HD video at 24p* Light weight, ergonomic, easy access buttons.* Lens hood is a great add cuts glare* Is compatible with filters you already have for 58mm lens.* In cinema mode, Filter 2 the colors are stunning, skin tones slightly reddish under certain lights. Filter 1 gives very good skin tones* Very good LCD screen, consumes less power.* Comes with all the cables, remote including mini HDMI.Cons:* Copying data via USB is slow* relay recording needs to be set each time you power on/off camera coz it does not save that in memory.* noticed some gel wobble when shooting on the move (fast pace walk)* slight vignetting at 100% wide angle (normal for wide angle lenses), a little zoom will fix that.* Audio recorded is slightly tinny, an external mic could make it sound a lot better.Overall I love this camera, friends and relatives said my videos looks like it was taken with a movie camera, and the colors are stunning.

I can't add much more than all the other reviews which are detailed and excellent. This is a fabulous camera. I use it to record in a dark theater and the low light capability is amazing. Really. Amazing.BUT.Some simple handling items are totally idiotic....Headphones / speaker. Now, on $150 cameras they do this better. To alternate between headphone and speaker output you have to go into multiple hard to reach menus. A complete and total pain in the rear. There are times you want to just use phones or speakers quickly but you can't. Period.Volume: And the same can be said about volume. Its insane. This camera is brilliant, but doesn't have easy volume control. Again, you have to delve into multiple menus to get to the volume control. Really??? $100 cameras have an external volume control. Infuriating.Other than that, however, I love this thing!

Since I was a little kid with an 8mm film camera, I have tried in vain to make videos that had the look and sound of professional TV and movie productions.I failed in many ways, many times. Sometimes due to my meager skills, sometimes due to the short comings of my cameras. The Vixia HF G10 changes that. I can no longer blame my equipment.Let me say now, I am not a professional video/film maker. I have had no formal training. My videos are for my own enjoyment, I record special moments and travels for myself and my family. I seldom display or publish videos on the Web.I placed my order on Jan. 5th, the day of Canon's new product announcement. Amazon was great, as usual, and kept my pre-order updated until the camera was released. I received it last week, and was immediately struck by the quality of the images. So far, I have just been learning about the G10, and its features. I've made some stunning video studies of my flower and vegetable garden. Whether played back on the camera's LCD screen, or on my big screen HD television, the images are sharp, clear, vibrant, and have the look of a professional documentary. In addition, the on camera microphones are far superior to any camcorder I've ever used. I have some large wind chimes near my garden and the playback of audio through my TV is astonishing. I have a Sennheiser MKE 400, but have not used it as yet, the on-camera sound is excellent. What I like: Coming from a DV tape camera, the memory cards are the best thing since sliced bread. The 'touch screen' is very good. I did not think I would like it, but it is easy to use, responds well, and the menu system is somewhat intuitive. The Manual mode provides tons of recording and exposure options. In Programmed mode the camera will make several automated exposure adjustments as the scene or lighting changes. In Av mode the DOF control is excellent, and there are built-in ND filters available in Av mode that have already come in handy. I have not used Tv mode, but in full Manual the controls are easy to access and perform as well as my Canon EOS still camera.Three modes of Auto focus and excellent, easy to use Manual focus. Zoom speed adjustment, very cool.Cinema Mode: Sounds like a gimmick, works like a charm. The primary feature in Cinema Mode is a set of 9 filters for various cinematic effects. I like them all, and look forward to using them to highlight my scenes in my videos. It would be easy to over use these, I think. But the Nostalgic, Sepia, and Old Movie filters will surely get used, as will the Dramatic B&W. I'm thinking the Vivid would work on panoramic landscapes. The whole memory card/built-in memory thing is wonderful. Transfer to a Win 7 PC is easy and fast. So far I'm sticking with the MXP 24P (true 1920 x 1080). It is the luxury I paid for, and I'm going to use it.Things I don't need: Still photos - nice but I have a great still camera. In camera editing and Decorations: just fluff to me. I guess these things have market appeal, but why does Canon add them to a camera aimed at the upper end video customer?Things I don't like: The initial impression that the G10 is a small, cheap-looking, plastic camcorder (I got over that when I saw how it performed). The shallow angle of the lens opening prevents adding after market wide angle conversion lens; apparently the only lens that currently fits is the very expensive Canon lens. The BP808 battery is small, and you need 2, or a larger BP819. There is no separate battery charger included, so you need one of those, too. The hot shoe is the Canon mini-shoe, so you need an adapter to use after market mikes or lights, or buy the expensive Canon accessories. My still camera is a Canon 5D Mk2. It has fantastic video performance as well as awesome still image performance. I wanted the G10 to give me more flexibility for different situations; run-and-gun, handheld kind of stuff, ad hoc filming which I find difficult with the 5D Mk2.That's about all I can think of now. I would buy this camcorder again without hesitation. I would and do recommend it to anyone looking to take that next step up in video making.I'll try to post a short video soon, showing some of the images from the Vixia HF G10.

Let me first start out by saying, I originally wasn't going to spend so much on a new camcorder. I had bought the Canon HF 100 a few years ago, and was fairly happy with it. It was nice, but definitely had its drawbacks. So, I started researching Canon's new line for 2011 and was torn between the M40 and G10. Having the new CMOS Pro sensor was a must. Everything I read about the low light capabilities sold me. Basically Canon went with a smaller pixel count (exactly 1920 x 1080), which in turn makes the pixels larger and better in low light shooting. I originally bought the M40 and was very happy with it, but started to realize it wasn't fitting all my needs. That went back, and I went with the G10. I have not looked back since!People might wonder what the biggest difference is between the two, and the big ones in my opinion are the manual lens control, wide angle lens (makes a HUGE difference in my opinion), larger LCD (3.5 in. vs. 3 in.), color viewfinder, and dual recording slots that let you record to both sd cards at the same time. Boy, I wish I had this feature two weeks ago for my niece's second birthday party. My sd card got corrupted while using the M40 and I lost her blowing out her candles and eating the first piece of cake. Now, if I had the G10, I would have had a backup of it recording to both slots simultaneously.Image quality wise, I couldn't be happier. The video quality just pops out and is silky smooth. I have made a couple videos with it and people are just in awe of the quality. I usually record in 60i because I like the smoothness. I know there are benefits of recording in 30p and 24p, but for home videos, I prefer 60i. Now if I was doing an amateur film, I'd probably go with the true 24p this camera offers. This camera has a lot of setting to meet your shooting requirements. I know a lot of people wish Canon included a 60p mode, but I honestly don't see a reason for it, at least not now. Everything I've read about it, editing 60p is a complete nightmare. No thanks.Speaking of modes, it does have an auto, manual, and cinema options. Manual of course gives you countless options, and cinema mode offers a variety of shooting preferences such as cool, vivid, dream, b/w, etc. You can search on youtube and see demonstrations of each. One of the big selling points for me was the wide angle lens. Now I know you can always buy an optional attachment wide angle lens for the M40, but they add a lot of extra weight and in my opinion inconvenience of carrying around more equipment than necessary. I also think by the time you add in that cost to the camera, it's not that much cheaper. I love having the wide angle lens built in and with me at all times. It's truly something you get used to, and you won't want to be without.Build quality is exactly what I expect from any Canon product. Feels sturdy and should hold up to a lot of wear and tear. I've never had any issues with previous Canon products breaking on me, so I would expect the same from this one. I would say the only thing I don't like on the newer Canons opposed to the older models is the touchscreen. It's simply not as responsive as I would like. I'm probably spoiled on my iphone's silky smooth touch controls. I guess it's just something I'll have to get used to. The only other feature I really miss from older camcorders is night vision. I don't know why most companies got rid of this feature. I still bust out my old Sony SR45 for those occasions. In conclusion, if you're looking for an excellent prosumer camcorder with amazing low light, controls, and options, you won't be disappointed with the HF G10. I've already ordered the DM-100 external mic (I like to do lots of outdoor shooting, so I need to eliminate the wind noise the best I can), and already have the VL-5 from my previous camcorder for better dark shooting. I think I'm set for almost all recording situations. I hope this was an informative review. Thanks for reading.

I do promo video for local bands and this camera comes along for every shoot. If I could, I'd replace my Sony's with a few more of these.

After plenty of debate on which camcorder to buy, finally decided to go with the HF G10. Reason for purchasing this one in specific was because I was tired of buying the same old regular cameras (non HD) and not enough manual settings. I'm a semi pro photographer and just as I like my cameras with lots of manual stuff, I wanted the same out of my camcorder. The menu is super user friendly, recording is a breeze, and after using it a few times, I really like the quality of the footage I'm getting. Without going into too much detail and not having that much knowledge on professional camcorders, the HF G10 gives me FANTASTIC HD quality without having to spend $3,000 and up. I really like it.Only thing I would add is that Canon should have a specific instruction manual on its own included that gives a step by step on how to download footage on a computer. It's there in the manual but you have to dig for it, as opposed to a pamphlet that just simplifies it for you.

I guess I was one of the lucky few who was able to get this camera early. I got mine 2 weeks ago and have been nothing but impressed with it. Right out of the box and in a medium lit interior room the picture was superb. I got a chance to take it out in the field for a bit and am extremely happy with it. Full manual control, a focus ring, an awesome and absolutely beautiful touch screen, what more could you ask for?I especially appreciate the dual SD card slots and the recording options there. There are certainly going to be times where you'll want to record to 2 cards at once and that will come in handy. But the ability to also record to the internal memory and then copy the contents to one of the SD cards in the card slots is also a great option. The other things that are not mentioned in a lot of the bullet points for this camera that I am impressed with include the waveform monitor and peaking meters which come in handy for the manual exposure and focus modes. It also does zebra stripes so you have many options to get the perfect shots without relying merely on what you see through the viewfinder or on screen. Also, when you focus, by default, it automatically magnifies the center of the screen so that you can tell exactly what is in focus. Of course that can also be turned off if it is not your preference. It is not a very large or very heavy camcorder either. That was my only reservation at first because I tend to prefer bulkier and heavier cameras. However this thing is so perfectly balanced in the hand and so rugged feeling that I am not concerned at all with the weight now.I ordered 2 64GB SDXC cards with mine and at full resolution video recording it is reporting around 14 hours of recording time. Awesome! I also purchased the BP-827 battery, though I had plenty of recording time out in the field with just the standard battery as well.Hope that helps anyone who might be on the fence about buying this one. If you have a model from last year then you may not need to upgrade yet. But it was definitely time for me to ditch the tapes and upgrade from my Canon HV30 and I am glad I did!Update - June 21, 2011I was able to take this camera on a trip last month to San Francisco, Napa Valley and Carmel by the Sea. The footage is simply amazing - but I did notice a couple of issues that I want to share with others who might purchase this camera.Issue 1) The camera uses "dynamic IS" for image stabilization by default in both auto and manual modes. It does not appear that you can change this in auto mode but you can in manual mode (and this is a prosumer camera so you shouldn't really use auto mode anyway) and I highly recommend that you change this. Use "standard IS" instead because dynamic IS tends to give you a wobble effect around the edges of your video. Google it for this camera and you'll see lots of youtube videos and threads on forums about it. It is a non-issue if you just stick with the Standard IS and we're still waiting to see if Canon fixes this in a firmware update.Issue 2) This is not as big of an issue but I did notice that there is a bit of vignetting going on with the lens that appears to be just when I have the lens hood on and at full zoom. It's a shadow effect around the edges. I recommend just using the lens hood when you really need it and only when you know you won't be zooming in full as much.I still maintain the 5 stars at this point because these are little things that you can easily get around and the wobble issue could likely be fixed by Canon soon anyway. It is one of those things that you deal with as an early purchaser and I have no regrets about buying this camera regardless. The footage I have made with this camera so far is absolutely stunning!

This camcorder looks very impressive when you first look at it. I used it to shoot concert videos, and I had big expectations. My previous camcorder was Canon Vixia M41, which was surprisingly good. I actually used both camcorders simultaneously. But no matter what settings I used on G10 it would always come out greenish, or blueish, or something. Besides all, the picture wouldn't be even close to beautiful, even with good indoor light. The colors would come out pale, with some light gray, or green fog. Surprisingly, it is more noisy than m41 in low light, and that noise looks just HORRIBLE! Of course some things are editable, but WHY M41 for $500 shoots better than G10 for $1099?I rate it one star because it is highly overpriced for the quality of picture it produces. I don't know, maybe it's better when you shoot outdoor... Indoors, in low light conditions, when you need to get a beautiful picture of the venue and musicians, this camcorder fails big time.Solution? Probably Lumix Gh3...

I have been an ardent user of Canon products for 15 years, purchasing over 18 cameras, camcorders, and lenses. I use the cameras to photograph and film projects for marketing our company's products. In other words I have always relied on Canon's quality to support my job function.Next week I have a 4-day project in another state that requires low light filming that my HV20 is not good at. Maybe now is the time for me to move up to a more professional camcorder, such as a XA10. After studying reviews I realized that there is a rattle problem with the handle. I called Canon Technical Support to see if the problem had been resolved and was told that it only occurred if the camcorder was shaken or that I could tape the switches. My reasoning is, why would I want to purchase a camera with a known quality issue for $2,200 and then have to apply tape for it to function properly. The technician agreed that if this was my feeling, I might want to consider the HFG10 as a low light alternative. Again I researched the reviews and ordered the HFG10 from Amazon. It was delivered Jan12th.Imagine my frustration when after three days of setting up the HFG10, purchasing additional accessories such as, additional batteries, filters, power packs and 32GB memory cards, I found a fault with the memory card slot. It will not hold in and secure the memory card.I called Canon technical support and was told by both a support technician and a supervisor that I could send it back to them for repair. REPAIR, I have not used it yet, it has only been out of the box 5 times. "Well that is our policy" said the officious Canon supervisor, or you could send it back to Amazon for a replacement or refund. Conclusion: Obviously Canon has quality control, design and function issues and no concern for their loyal purchasers. Also, it seems they have little environmental concern for carbon footprint.Scenario 1: I ship the HFG10 back to Amazon for an exchange, Amazon ship a replacement back to me. Amazon now ships the original camera back to Canon.Scenario 2: It's called customer loyalty or we stand by our brand! I ship their HFG10 back to Canon; they exchange it and tighten their Canon VIXIA HF G10 Full HD Camcorder with HD CMOS Pro and 32GB Internal Flash MemoryScenario 3: In frustration of poor customer service by Canon, I send the HFG10 back to Amazon for a full refund and never purchase another Canon product. In today's financial climate, we the customers are looking to purchase quality products at a reasonable price and have that company support their brand and their loyal customers.

I purchased the G10 based off the abundance of positive reviews and from the clips I've seen on YouTube. I'm not going to go into the details of quality and performance as most reviewers have done better than I could do. Instead I wanted to give two overviews of problems I didn't anticipate. After receiving the G10 a month ago I can report that it is a big improvement over my 6 year old Sony HDD camcorder. I'm an amateur enthusiast and just wanted to have a good camcorder with great low light video quality as the most important factor for me. The G10 does well in low light but NOT on the auto setting. You have to get in and tweak some of the manual settings in order to get a smooth picture without the grainy shadows. I didn't know this so I was caught off guard the first night I shot some test footage in our living room. It didn't take long to get some settings recommendations off google and now my picture looks much better. Still not as good as the test footage I've seen on YouTube but certainly better than what I'm used to.The biggest issue I was unaware of and that almost caused me to return the camera was how the camera records video files. The files are unplayable on my computer without third party software. The G10 does come with software to play the files but it is clunky and not user friendly at all. On my previous camera, I would simply drag and drop all of my video files on an external hard drive and enjoy watching old video's through my computer. This is no longer possible as I have to transfer the files off the external hard drive and onto my computer in order for the software to play the file. It's just a complete mess.I've read that there is software out there that can change the files to a HD form of mpeg file which makes it easier to watch on your computer but that seems very costly and time intensive. My solution now is to record all my video onto SD cards (the G10 allows has two slots for that)and I can then pop out the SD card and put it in my PS3 which can then play the files. I am still backing up video on my external hard drive as well, I just can't easily watch it like I have in the past. For people with experience and an abundance of time I'm sure this is a non issue. This camera is certainly not as easy as the point and shoots I've had in the past but I'm hopeful this will challenge me to learn new things!Just something to consider if you're an amateur like me.

This Camcorder is very nice, It records audio with the built in mic rather well. I have recorded living musicians, a high school concert and have been very satisfied with the audio. If you want to work professionally with the Camcorder I would suggest investing in a mic that you can attach to it to get even richer dialogue and overall sound quality. I also suggest not getting a refurbished unit as I did since many times refurbs can turn out to be a bit of a hassle. Fortunately the seller Ebizbay168 was very helpful in being my advocate with Canon. The unit works fine however the charging of my battery pack in the unit seems to have an issue according to the owner's manual. However it records and plays back beautiful with no issues, I just do not want a hardware issue down the road so I am shipping it back to Canon after Christmas for a replacement refurb and crossing my fingers and hoping for no issues. Over all I am satisfied with my purchase, I would just not purchase a refurbished camcorder in the future unless the seller has pre-tested the unit and reported that it was in complete working order.

The PQ is truly outstanding. This is from a combination of the new HD pro sensor and a good lens system. It fits pro quality video into a package that doesn't look too oversized to take to your kids school play. The quality in normal indoor low light settings is exactly why you should buy this model over Sony or Panasonic. The Canon will get you better PQ in normal (non-perfect) environments. I have no problem with stabilization "wobble" in practical use - you can induce it if you try, but it's not an issue otherwise.Sound is adequate and what you'd expect with on-body mics. If you have pro needs you should be running a separate audio path anyway and sync it in post.Touchscreen and menu system is the only weak parts of the package. The touchscreen is not capacitive like you're used to on your smartphone - it requires pressure to work. The organization of the menu system and setting restrictions when in Auto mode is aggravating and close to illogical. There are plenty of things they should let you adjust that you can't. If you go into manual mode, you can tweak just about everything, but good luck finding where to change it. (Even if you've found it once before.) I never knew a menu system could be made this badly - it's by far the most badly organized system on any video or still camera I've ever seen (and I've seen many). The standard battery is a little short on power. On a +$1k camera it really shouldn't be that skimpy.Bottom line - this camera really nails the most important parts (so 5 stars): fantastic PQ in a discrete package with the best low light performance you'll find under $2k, and extensive control over just about every parameter. The real differentiator here is the new bar in low light performance that other manufacturers will be forced to match in the future. In 5 years we'll look back and remember how bad the early HD CMOS cameras were, and how Canon led the industry towards better PQ in everyday use. It's incredible that this $1200 camera is sharper than the XH A1 ($3500) I had just a few years ago.Update 9/29/12: Still a great camera and still love it. Canon are using the same CMOS sensor in more of their cheaper models now (with cost reduced lenses).

Absolutely the best decision I could made. The G10 not only is much well built, with details that the wise eye see as a difference such a built-in lens hood, but its image quality is simple OUTSTANDING. Forget about the edge the TM900 may have in resolution, the low light capabilities of the G10 is amazing for the price, considering it is a consumer camera. And despite what many said, low light is the norm is video shooting unless you do outdoor work in daylight or studio work (which won't be with this type of camera). Any indoor shooting with available light is low light, it is is photography and in video. The results with this camera are simple AMAZING.It also has a lot of pro features that are very appreciated for those who came from more pro cameras such as the Z1, although they are controlled by the menu as it is unavoidable in this form factor.Apart from the price, the only thing that made me doubt vs. the TM900 was the lack of manual zoom ring, but the zoom control in the G10 despite not being as handy as a manual zoom ring is very good and in good hands can do any job (it is programmable in speed). The only thing I regret is the mini accesory shoe instaead of a standard one, but this is normal in the comsumer camcorders. In video, quality comes at a price. This camcorder is a bit expensive but won't dissapoint you.

After many years, and just as many video cameras and camcorders, I've finally found one that tops them all. I've owned at least 5 Canon camcorders, and have liked them all, but I never felt I could afford the HF G10. I'm glad I bit the bullet and bought it. It's low light performance is unreal, for instance, with just a single 75 watt bulb in a relatively large room, I got great video. The automatic face tracking is a nice feature. I like the camera's matte finish, and the lens shade. The built in viewfinder is a must under bright conditions. If you plan to use the camera with the "Auto" setting, then you are going to miss a lot of the G10's exceptional features. I spent many evenings studying the manual, and discovered many great features. If you plan to make a camcorder purchase, and want better than a point and shoot camera, take it from me; the Canon VIXIA HF G10 is tough to beat.
