I like this camera. While the image quality is not quite up to the level of my former 5DM2, the images are mostly very good (the auto focus has the occasional miss). At about the same time I bought this Canon 70D, I also bought a Nikon D7100. With each camera I have a 35mm lens attached (35 f2 IS on the Canon and 35f1.8 DX on the Nikon). While dxomark rates the sensor on the D7100 about 20% higher than the sensor on the 70D, I find I like the images from the 70D a little bit better (I shoot only RAW so I can't rate the jogs). The reason for my preference is the 70D images have a little bit more contrast and don't look nearly as "digital" (maybe a little more film-like) as the images from the Nikon.

My biggest complaint about the 70D is that in order to shoot a video (regardless of length) one has to flip a switch and then press the video record button… flipping the switch is an unnecessary extra step (it's possible I'm making the extra step because I have not read the manual to see if there is an alternative procedure).

Overall I'd recommend the 70D to anyone who is in the market for a nice APS-sized DSLR (in other words, if you don't want to spend the extra money for the Canon 6D or Nikon D610). If Amazon had half-stars, I'd rate this 70D 4.5 stars.

I wanted one of these 70Ds since it first hit the internet sites! I owned a 50D at the time, and loved it, but you know how love is! Here today, sell it tomorrow. I sold the 50D and scraped up the rest of the bread and ordered this baby! I totally love it! I fall in love too easy most times, or so I'm told, but my love affair with this camera will last a long, long time. I won't bore you with the features, as you are already aware of most of them, or you wouldn't be looking at this camera. It's terrific! And the bundled deal I got through Amazon made it even better!

I've been using a Rebel XSI (450d or Kiss X2 depending on where you are) for 5 years now. It was my first SLR and I have explored and used practically every feature it has.
Now it's pretty obvious that more expensive SLRs are typically better but I've always wondered how much am I REALLY going to get for the extra money. I mean, the 7d body costs around double the price of a T5i body.

The answer: A LOT! This camera improves on practically every aspect of the camera I had including faster AF with multiple sensors, more megapixels, excellent touchscreen and controls (though I'm missing the exposure control), in camera HDR, wifi (still haven't figured it out though...), wireless flash control, video shooting (which is just amazing), HDMI out, incredibly fast continuous shooting mode, much better 'live view' shooting (=shooting like a non-SLR using the screen to compose), higher shutter speeds and higher ISO values - you name it!

Also, the camera looks better built and it's supposed to provide some sort of weather resistance.

So from my perspective - an excellent investment and I'm looking forward to spending the next few years with this camera.

The camera is nice and good, but over rated.It has many cons, some are serious, example:1.Build quality, no way close to a $1000 camera. In fact the poor build quality affects the controls, like the rear wheel, it's so cheap plastic that it's difficult to turn.2.Focus: With the kit lens(I have the 18-135mm) is good and accurate, but forget about it if you will use most other lenses. I tried the 50mm 1.4, the 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8, and with all of them the camera can not focus except in live view. I tried 3 cameras and all have the same problem. I was wondering how canon would release a camera with major defect like this. The dpreview web site noticed the same thing. Read their review. They were polite and blamed them selves not the canon. Surprising!3.The video: While many say it's great, it's no way compared to the Sony cameras. Also the canon is sticking to the 30p. No 60p.4.Custumization: poor for a 1K camera. Example: you can not assign the buttons you like. No comparison to other offerings from Olympus, Panasonic or Sony. I wish I can assign the WB to a button, but you can not. The Sony RX10 has 3 custom WB and the 70D has just one.5.WB: if you want to chance the custom WB, you have to go and dig into the main menu. A 4 or 5 steps. Coupled with the fact you have just 1 custom WB, is a difficult job.6.Program shift: you have to do it for every single shot if you shoot in P mood. It does not remember it.And so many cons.7.Focus, for the second time: Only good for stationary subject. Regardless of the focus mode you use, none works well for moving subjects.The camera takes nice pictures, but there are many better options, and with the release of the new Sony A6000, this camera is good only if you already invested in canon glass, and sadly most of it won't work with this camera.

This was purchased as a gift for us, to replace our aging Digital Rebel. WOW, what a difference. Great pictures, easy to use and carry, everything we expected from another Canon. We did not get a chance to compare this side by side with the more expensive professional models before buying it, so really can't speak to how it stacks up. But compared to our old DSLR, it is an order of magnitude nicer in picture quality and functionality. Shooting our son's wedding with rapid fire allowed us to capture just the right moment time and time again.

If you are reading this review, then consider that I am easily enamored coming from my previous camera, the 30D, which I now use as a backup. I have been wanting to pull the trigger the last few years when Canon would release successor after successor to the 30D, and finally did it with this one after playing with the touchscreen a bit at a popular electronics store.The 70D is QUICK! It is quick to focus - whether via the viewfinder or liveview, and the menu is quick as well. Traversing the menu via the touchscreen also makes things a lot easier - I have it set to sensitive. I won't harp on too much about the video autofocusing capabilities since enough has been said about it - but it is awesome.Things that I find myself doing after a month of ownership, that I couldn't do on the 30D:LiveView - manual focusing via liveview, and the ability to zoom in to confirm focus.. holy crap!! My manual lenses give me 100% success rate now in indoor dimlit settings.Wifi - connect to smartphone: I can now quickly do some in-cam edits on raw captures, transfer a jpg version from the camera to my iPhone, and send it to eager parents/models/whoever I did the shoot for.Sensor-cleaning: Greeted with a 'sensor cleaning' message each time I turn the camera on and off, via "ultrasonic vibrations". Regardless of its effectiveness, it makes me feel better ;-)..wish it had:Considering the camera is crazy customizable, I am disappointed that there is no way to assign a shortcut key to preview the image in 100% to maintain my chimping habit. I find myself using the touchscreen and the 'pinch out' gesture to zoom in for this purpose. Friend's prosumer Nikon has this and I am jealous. I tell 'em Canon is trying to make me a good photog by keeping my chimping tendencies in check.

When shooting through the viewfinder using the center point focusing square, the autofocusing system did not work at all. 9/10 shots were out of focus. I noticed this problem the moment I started shooting. After multiple tests and research of my own, I brought it into a local camera store for more testing and to get a professional opinion. They came to the same conclusion: it was defective. Unless I manually focused (while shooting through the viewfinder) or used the Live View shooting mode, it was impossible to achieve focus. Research this focusing problem, as it seems widespread (I'm aware that not all 70Ds are affected by this focusing problem).

UPDATE: 8/26/2014 - I returned my lemon camera to Amazon and purchased a copy of the 70D from my local camera store. No autofocusing problems! On a side note: When I unboxed my new 70D from my local camera store, I noticed that some items were individually packaged in clear plastic...these items were not individually packaged when I unboxed my new camera purchase from Amazon. Makes me wonder (as other reviewers have mentioned) if I was sent a used camera.

wonderful but no more than 1250 iso and your footage needs to be exposed slightly more by one or two notches from the middle meter bar as footage is dark for some reason middle of the meter bar, video only sorry, photos not tried.

Loving this camera body. Low-light performance isn't on par with a full-frame camera of course, but it does well enough for my needs.

The autofocus system is awesome. That was the selling point for me and I haven't been disappointed. Having 60+ AF points is nice for portraits when you have time to dick with it and hone your composition, but when you shoot action like I do, having the 19 that this camera offers is **perfect**, especially when they're *all* effectively cross-type. I can quickly change my focus point to get a shot, then change it again in a second or less to get a follow-up shot. If you shoot action (I shoot mostly auto racing), this is the camera to have IMO.

And even if you shoot portraits, still life, landscapes, etc., this camera is still a very capable piece of gear, especially for the money. It's no 5DMKIII or 1DX, but it's also not $3k/$6k.

Some of the more snobby photogs may enjoy saying that this isn't a "pro" body, but such things are completely subjective. To my mind, this camera is totally capable of professional use. And in fact, I've seen several pros using it. Ipso facto... it's a pro body.

I'm very happy with this camera. I hope to see this AF system in future Canon cameras.

I love my 70D. This is a fun camera, and probably the best crop-sensor camera on the market. It is definitely a step up from my old T3i, with additional focus points, megapixel count, and high-ISO sensitivity. The touch screen LCD is awesome, both for shooting photos and for scrolling, pinching and zooming when reviewing photos. The built-in WIFI coupled with the smartphone app also allows for new perspectives and remote shooting opportunities.

No, this still isn't the same as buying a professional full-frame camera, but if you are shooting mostly for fun and have lots of light, this camera will probably do you well.

I upgraded to this from my old Rebel XTi and the difference is night and day, the camera itself seems pretty intuitive and feels good in the hands. The more I play with it the more new features I discover, the built-in WiFi ability to pair to my phone and the ability to control off camera flash is pretty neat. The 18-135 lens is a very well rounded every day use lens.

Love my Canon EOS 70D. It's expensive to be sure, but totally worth it for the autofocus.

I'm a foodie and love taking foodie pics for my blog. Admittedly though, I'm not well-versed in photography though I plan to take classes in the near future. I had a Nikon S9100 previously, but the AF was horrible for food pics, especially in dim lighting. The EOS 70D will change your world, and your food pics! And once you take the time to understand what is going on, the pics only get better.

You can use WIFI to transfer pics to your phone or your computer, though the instructions could be better (I needed to use the internet to figure that out). But outside of that, it's pretty intuitive.

I would not hesitate to buy this camera if you're looking to great pics without the full knowledge of photography. And if you're more advanced, I can't imagine that you can fail with this camera as well.

This is an amazing camera! Love everything about it. Had a 7d and the 70d blows it away in every aspect. Better color, sharpness, love the touch screen for focus and metering. I've been shooting a church Christmas play for years. I was amazed how much better the new ones are. I had Mary and Joesph locked in on the screen, the lighting was even on the stage. All of a sudden the lights went out and there was just a spot lite on them. Perfect exposure.

I am truly delighted with the Canon 70D which I recently received. When fitted with the awesome Canon 24-105mm Zoom lens which I received last week, the results are amazing! Apart from the fact that this camera has inummerable features (it practically does everything except coffee!!) I mainly bought it for its wonderful swivelling LCD screen and its ability to take multiple exposures (I've never seen this feature in DSLR). Its ergonomic shape is a pleasure to hold and with this lens, the combined weight is very acceptable. There is nothing I can fault in this excellent design and it really makes you feel like a professional. I keep reading that everyone loves everything about the swivelling LCD screen and now its my turn to say the same!! To me, this screen is a great necessity as I do a lot of odd angled photography and this one is incredibly sharp too!! There is so much more I can say about this beauty but to keep it short and sweet, I'll just write this - Anyone out there who's in doubt about this camera or in two minds whether to buy this one or another choice, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE 70D!! JUST GET IT!! Nuff said!!

Bought it to replace my 60D. It was the best buy I could get. It is fantastic. Better sensor, better screen, better processor… But, the key things are: 1st) I would never think a touch screen would be so fine and easy to use. Well, it is a new experience to take shots that require fine tune adjustments. Everything is there an really easy to control. Great. 2nd) The follow-focus system. It is incredible. Works perfect. Please note that you will need lenses that have the silent focus motor (STM). Normal lenses (EF and L series) will make a lot of noise. If you are recording sound in separate, no problem; if you are using the camera's recorder, only the silent lens will be OK. I'm using it more than my 5D MKII.

i give it 5 stars for now the best camera then nikon d3200 good pictures and auto focus stm you cant hear the focus only thing i having a hard time with is the WiFi i download the app i cant get the app to work the WiFi wont stay on it keep turning off but canon 70d amazing i havent test the low light yet so hope it works better then low light on the nikon d3200 i didnt buy this off amazon but on a other site

I did a lot of research before I pulled the trigger on this purchase. The reviews for this particular model are spot on. I have a smaller Canon so I was familiar with most of the buttons and dials. This camera is so user friendly, it's amazing. I have experimented with a lot of the settings, but there are so many I'm afraid it's going to take a while. I would consider myself a pretty descent photographer and this camera has taken things to a new level for me. I replaced an 8 year old Pentax, that I haven't liked for at least the last 5 years. I am so happy I made the decision!! I can't wait to learn more about what the camera is capable of. I haven't taken a bad picture yet.

I dropped and broke my 7D and decided to replace it with the 70D. It has not lived up to expectations.
The good.
It is almost as fast as the 7D, one frame slower but hard to tell.
The auto focus is better than the 7D ( onced you dial it to your liking) I end up with more pictures in focus when shooting moving objects.

The bad.
I have a 28-105 F4L in auto mode it will only shoot at f4 giving such a shallow depth of field that I couldn't get a a hummingbird fully focused. I normally shoot in manual anyway but this camera leaves me no choice.
The camera has not been easy to use I have had to go into the menus to dial it in to get it take the pictures I want to take.
It seems like there is a lot of noise in the pictures.even at low ISO .

If you are hoping to use this camera in auto mode you may be sorry. If you are taking dark art photos you also might be sorry. This camera is not what I had hoped it would be. Even with the number of throw away pictures with my 7D I miss it.I have had an XTI, XSI,7D and now 70D I still think the XTI had the best image quality out of the box. I have been less happy with each cannon camera and will probably switch to another system when I replace this camera.

The pictures on this thing are top notch, best camera I've ever used. Thank God, cause the price was a big jump from the usual. Still, I got it on a friend's recommendation, and I'm mostly pleased.

Only issue is that, with the video settings, the footage loses a couple frames once in a while. I do high res vlogs, so this was a bit worrying. Thankfully, I have to do a bunch of jump cuts anyway, so it doesn't hinder me that much, but it's still frown-worthy.

The Digital SLR can be a mine field of choices in both features and price range. With the EOS 70D 20.2 MP, Canon continues to distinguish itself in this class. It is difficult and perhaps unfair and unwise to write a review of a product that has rivals not only from its own brand issues, but also from the other high quality examples stocking shelves worldwide. As the airlines often say after landing, 'We know you have many choices of airline, thanks for choosing us.' Choosing Canon is easy because I have owned and used Canon cameras even before digital became the standard. So it is a simple joy to hold and caress the 70D and take it through its paces. It is a very response beast that feels light and is ergonomically engineered. Features are numerous as is its versatility. Without going into detail, I would say, if you are looking for DSLR and willing to make a leap, this is your prize. I believe it is a gem at the price it is offered. And if you are upgrading, then you may already own one or more compatible lenses for this camera. Brand loyalty swayed this purchase, but it the the Canon brilliance and engineering that wins the prize for this model. I am happy and have not even scratched the surface of this camera's full capability.

No surprise here, another user with a camera that can't focus. I kept thinking it was me that was having the trouble so I read books and forums and tried out different lenses, guess what?! It wasn't me. This camera has a serious issue that Canon doesn't want to admit. I'm now out of the time to return and am stuck with this piece of crap.

Build quality is awesome and delivery was a breeze. My favorite feature is the articulating screen.
I've owned the 70D for 6 months now and I have no regrets.

I bought this as a gift for my partner who is an avid Canon user. He was ecstatic, but being a very good photographer for over 30 years and a sophisticated, discerning user of cameras he almost immediately noticed a major problem. The center focus AF through the viewfinder produced some disturbingly soft (fuzzy, unfocused) images. When he photographed the same scenes through the LiveView LCD, the images were sharp and colorful as you would expect. He spent a whole weekend micro-adjusting the focus with his high-end lenses, only to get the same slightly out of focus images. I returned the camera for an exchange. I hope this is an isolated incident. We had hoped to take the camera to a planned vacation in Maui! I will update on the replacement camera. Thank you to Amazon for your return/exchange policy!!

I've had this camera for about 8 months now but am still learning things. I love everything about it. The focus system is fast and sharp. The only time I've had anything to complain about is autofocus out into a wide open sky when shooting a sunset or such.. Sometimes I have to find something far away on the ground to focus on then raise the camera and shoot which isn't a problem handheld.. A pain when using a tripod. I've only used the wi-fi function on it for playing around but it is very cool to be able to set up the camera and control it from a fair distance with my phone or my tablet. Can even do it with my desktop via my router. I keep waiting for that time when I will set it up to catch some wildlife up close while I'm sitting away shooting. It has great noise control at higher ISO and the sound quality and picture quality of video is amazing. Better than many movie cameras I've seen. All in all I love my 70D.
