Very nice lens, small and sharp, it is an excellent all around imaging solution.

Nice compact lens that takes reasonably sharp photos. Most photo editing programs can correct for imperfections caused by this lens. It seems nicely built and is much smaller than an EL series lens. I'd like a lower f stop range though.

You won't believe how good this lens is. The handling, the build quality - perfectly matches the EOS M. The fact that in name only, it matches the kit lenses that ship with many other cameras... AND the price will give you the impression that this is a cheap kit lens that you should dismiss. I did! And I was very wrong.
I put it on a gift wish list thinking that it might come in handy and at the very least my son would enjoy having a zoom when he uses the M. He sort of understands that the 22/f2 prime is really an amazing lens, but when we started seeing the stills and video that this 18-55 captures we realized that this little thing is SERIOUS!
Just shot this alongside 2 5D Mark III's with L lenses and have to say as a wide-shot / safety shot it totally holds it's own.
I put it on a gift wish list thinking that it might come in handy and at the very least my son would enjoy having a zoom when he uses the M. I wanted to upgrade my travel rig. Been using a Lumix LX-5 but the sensor is no match for the APS-C sensor in my T3i, so the EOS M with a Fotodiox adapter that accepts my Canon lenses seems optimum (and has proved to be a good choice).
I want a bare minimum kit, and it was $150 cheaper to buy the EOS M with the 22mm lens, and then buy the 18-55mm separately.
What has surprised me is how good the quality of this lens is. And at 18mm on the low end, it's even wider than the 22mm prime lens. While not quite as fast, nor as light, the EOS M's ability to handle high ISO better than my T3i (ISO 6400 with acceptable shot quality), the extra extra stop of speed on the 22mm has not been an issue.
I'd recommend this as a walk-about lens for day-to-day use. It even gets close enough for semi-close up work.

The lens gives your EOS-M a good range with the cropped sensor (28-90), but the lens is very, very slow. The EOS-M is notorious for its slow focusing and this lens doesn't help when in auto-focus mode as it wants to focus in and out before locking in.
Not a problem when you have time to set-up for a shot, but not good when you are shooting anything with movement.
The IS does help in lower light situations to keep the shutter speed at decent levels.
The wide-end of the lens seems soft but it seems crisp from around 28mm to the top of the zoom.
Maybe as I get used to it, I'll like it more.

Surprising, this is quite sharp. I bought this for a 70D (Body Only) along with a 40mm STM and 70-200mm 4.0 L STM. As of yet I have not felt the need to replace this for a more expensive wide angle prime or zoom as the pictures I am getting are Good, it is especially good on the 70D for video giving excellent and rapid focus in live view.

18-55 is really, really good, and if you need IS or a bit more flexibility compared to fixed focal length lens (i.e. EF-M 22mm f/2), it's a great buy. For my shooting style however, I prefer the shallow DOF and large, bright aperture provided by the 22mm lens.

I was contemplating buying the 3rd party lens hood as it would have saved me a bit of money as lens hoods aren't much in terms of technology as they simply block out unwanted sunlight so both the Canon and 3rd party hoods essentially work the same, I decided in the end to buy this one as it was reduced in price and would fit my lens the way it was intended as I am very much one for perfection and I must say how pleased I am with both the fit and look of the lens hood and also the performance which is obviously the main concern.
The delivery date was estimated to be 4 days and it came on that forth day with no delays and no damage to the box and exterior packaging. Overall a fantastic purchase one of which I would make again, if necessary.

Defective. Started giving me Error 60 which is the lens. I gave it a shot, maybe a glitch. It got worse as I used it. Aperture would be at 0 and the screen would be dark. It would not take a picture. I had to reset by removing the battery. But it kept on getting worse. Returned the item to Amazon. Wished it worked. My 22 mm is now back and it never gives me any Error messages, ever since new. I still would like to get a replacement for the 18-55mm but I want one that works. Thanks.

I received an email to tell me when the lens would be delivered - and it was. It was all beautifully and very safely packaged. I then received a further email containing the receipt and contact details in case of any problems. I am more than satisfied with the service and delighted with the lens and would have no hesitation in buying again from this source.

Makes the camera a lot bigger, but it takes excellent video with quiet focus/zoom. If it weren't for the quiet hybrid video, a higher quality EF lens with the adapter will likely yield better results, especially for still photography. If you are going to carry a larger lens, it might as well be a better one than this one, albeit much larger.

Good little lens, not too heavy. I did not keep as I understand it is prone to 'ribbon snapping' although I am assured that this is a relatively cheap thing to repair.

Bought this to replace an older Canon version that had stopped auto focusing. It would have cost me as much to have that lens repaired, so bought a new one. This lens is great. Very quiet, almost silent. Auto focus is really good and I find that the pictures are clearer and sharper than with the old Canon lens. Very pleased with it, price very good. Makes taking photos a real pleasure.

Because the other reviews describe this lens very well, I'll focus my attention on handling.
While this lens is very good for the price, I find it a bit clumsy to carry and take pictures. I usually would prefer to use my feet to zoom closer than to use this zoom lens. And, while the zoom lens is sharp enough, the prime lens is sharper - and don`t forget it`s wide open aperture is f2.
Yes, the 18-55mm zoom is very good technically. But, between the slow focus, the small camera body, and stiff zoom, it's awkward to handle quickly. With this lens and no viewfinder on the M, I would miss most of my shots. When I go out with the intention of shooting, like at the dog park, I use my Canon Rebel EOS T4i with my 50-200mm Ultrasonic zoom lens. It's heavy with the battery grip, but with it I always get the picture.
The M-zoom really is a good lens. I think it's better than the regular Canon zoom lens of the same zoom range. And I purchased it through e-bay for under $80.00. I do recommend it despite all my bitching. But do shop around for price.

I was surprised to receive this in a box with no packing, so the lens was free to roll around inside the box, no warranty card, no instruction manual as shown in the description, and no registration card. All previous Canon purchases have included these items but it was the packaging which caused me most concern!
Having said this the lens is amazing value and produces good images. I just hope that there is no hidden damage which could cause future problems, as I have no makers warranty!

This lens is basically on point with the standard 18-55 kit lens that comes with other Canon lenses. It is decent for the cost however it does not provide anything extraordinary for this type of lens. Although the minimum aperture is unimpressive, the image stabilization really does help in a pinch. I have found that I use the 22mm pancake lens much more often, due to its impressive optics and standard field of view.

After the firmware update improving the autofocus speed of the EOS M and the price drop, I decided to pick one up to replace my point-and-shoot camera that I did not use very often because I was never completely satisfied with the image quality. I originally bought the camera with the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens. While I was very impressed with the 22mm lens, I decided to add the 18-55mm lens to my kit for those times when focal length flexibility was more important than aperture. I found the 22mm f/2 to be impressively sharp and contrasty for such a small and cheap lens. The 18-55mm is not as quite as sharp as the 22mm, but is very good for a small zoom lens. It appears to be even better than the EF-S 18-55mm included as a kit lens with Canon's Rebel DSLRs, which itself is an impressive lens considering the price point. The EF-M 18-55mm also seems to focus faster than the 22mm f/2 - the increased DoF is probably helping here. The build quality is impressive, with a metal shell and metal mount. The extending portion and filter threads are made of heavy-duty plastic and feels very solid without any play, even when extended.
Do not expect this lens to have the image quality of one of Canon's L lenses, but for the price it is a fantastic match for the EOS M. If you already bought the camera with the 22mm lens, consider adding this to your kit and completely replacing that point-and-shoot.

EW-63C lens hood in original Canon packing. Fits the EF-S 18-55 IS STM (non-rotating) lens on my 700 D fine. Note: if your lens spins on auto focussing this is not the hood for you (see other comments).

The estimated time for delivery was about a month but it was definitely quicker than expected (which is a plus)The packaging was very nice and neat. I almost didn't want to take a loose the wrapping. Lol but everything came in one piece. Nothing broken. Lens wrapped up with triple bubble wrap (it also came with the lens cleaning cloth and the lens cap holder) Silent auto focus too :D I'll definitely be shopping here again!

I've enjoyed the Canon M body and fixed 23mm lens for some time but when I had a mishap with the Canon 17-55mm on my 7D I realized my backup system was not backup enough. This was a great deal for a beautiful lens made for the M body. No regrets. I should have gotten it sooner.

I bought the body and then this lens because it compliments each other. I bought the EF/EF-S lens adapter for the camera but it's a bit bulky when mated with EF/EF-S lenses. This came from a kit lens and sold individually. The lens is quiet and it has IS! The miniaturization is incredible as it's made of metal vs plastic. The sharpness is above average for this little lens.

This is my back up camera kit so it wont get a hard workout. Very satisfied with images but they are not in L-series class, still with a wee bit of post they are quite good. The build could be a bit better so not a candidate for long term use in a demanding environment. That said it is a good value for the money.

I can't believe that this lens is so quiet, I shoot a lot of video and have never heard a focussing sound since I got this lens.
I the past I had the old kit 18-55 and I could hear if I focussed on the video.

Exactly what I wanted. I am very pleased with this lens. Wish I had bought my EOS M with this lens first, even though the 22mm is also a very sharp lens. I like having a zoom.. It covers most of my casual needs very well..

At first you might think this lens is too light and has a less than solid feel but the lightness is an advantage with a heavy camera body. I use the Canon 60D. This is the first STM lens I have used. It is silent in auto focus and can be manually tweaked if needed without switching to manual mode which is a big advantage. Also the lens does not rotate when zooming or focusing so as I use a polarising filter this is ideal. A disadvantage is that Canon have designed a narrow focusing ring at the front of the lens which is covered by the lens hood when in the stored position. I suppose this is a minor inconvenience and only applies if you want to manually focus without the hood in its functional position. Overall the image quality is excellent and the Image Stabilising system is an asset for close up work. I am very pleased with the lens.

I own a lot of cannon lenses (although this was by far the cheapest one I ever decided to buy). My other canon lenses are pro "L" series lenses - however I wanted a slightly wider lens for one specific job and thought I would try this one. Bad decision - I returned the lens - very poor build quality - although it probably works fine (I didn't get that far!).

After getting a very good deal on the Canon EOS M camera with the 22mm lens, I just couldn't resist this deal! The design is elegant and the photos are great. Compact, crisp, and clear. Easy choice, no reason not to buy bulk packaged NEW lens.

Beware it's NOT for the standard non STM lens as the hood spins as the camera focuses and doesn't fit snug anyway. My own mistake here but return process worked well.

The filter attachment also rotates, making it unusable with polarizer or grad filters.
The maximum aperture of f/3.5 at 18mm isn't too bad but as soon as you get past 40mm, it drops down to a nasty f/5.6 rendering this lens pretty much useless in low light without a flash. It also isn't particularly sharp and suffers quite badly from chromatic aberration.
The build quality is the worst part of this lens. It's a 100% plastic construction, even the mount. I've actually heard of these plastic mounts breaking and the lens getting stuck on the camera.
If you're looking for a good EF S walking around lens, I'd strongly recommend the 17 - 85 USM instead. Far better image and build quality with a silent super fast AF. These can be found used on ebay for around

Seems ok. very quiet auto focussing compared with previous version (which failed after 3 years due to focussing fault). Only concern is that it came without a canon box/quarantee. Hope it doesn't fail within a year! Supplier says to contact him if any problem!

This is a good lens for the EOS M. Optically very good. Not quite as nice as the 17-40L I have for my 7D, but close enough. The EOS M is so much more compact, that it travels with me on business trips that the 7D will not. With the 11-22, this lens covers most of what you need for street and landscape work. After processing, the images are fabulous. It is also good for movies. There is no focusing noise.

I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this lens, as I would personally recommend saving your money towards a better quality lens. In the long run I think this is more productive, as even though I'm an amateur, I quickly discovered more things I disliked about this lens than liked. I don't however regret having it, as it's aided and matured my knowledge.
One thing that particularly shocked me about this lens, but overall is unimportant is the crazy amount of noise the lens makes! It also seemed to take an age to focus. Perhaps not good for stalker shots eh? ;)

I have several canon L lenses including the 85 1.2 and the70-200 2.8 is II .Sometimes I just don't need or want to take the the big heavy stuff out. I bought the eos-m camera and the 22 pancake lens as a kit ,then bought the ef-m 18-55 later. Both of them are sharp and well built they don't feel cheap at all. It's nice to have a small zoom but the the 22mm is a little sharper and better in low light. I wouldn't buy this if I was trying to get action shots it's a little slow focusing but for a walk around or candids it works great. I take this set up with me in the car and I'm never without a decent camera .
I have to say the low light pancake is great and it's a little sharper but I find do use the zoom more.

Silent and quick focusing. Internal focusing so lens does not notate - ideal when using polarised filter. Picture quality about the same as standard lens. Worth buying as an upgrade if you don't pay full retail price.

My fault I ordered for the wrong lens, mine spins at the front to focus. price was OK for a Canon bit of kit.
