I was rather unimpressed with the cheap cardboard-like slip cover that you have to remove to scan in 35mm film strips. After 20 scans, the scanner stopped working. I emailed cannon support and after a few emails, they informed me that the scanner was defective. Wonderful. Next time, I'm getting an Epson.

Just bought this scanner and tested it with text, photo, film, and slide. It did an amazingly good job on all. The bundled software worked great. OCR handled text great. Installation was super easy on XP pro machine (install software and hook up scanner -- ready to go!). No hassles. Looks great too. It's a low cost scanner (had been looking at a more expensive one but decided to save money). This scanner performs beyond my expectations.

For the money the Canon LiDE 80 is ideal for most users. The scanner will scan at 2400 dpi, but only in the mode the really matters, film (negative) and slide (positive) mode. The Canon LiDE 80 does this to prevent you from generating a large, and most of the time unnecessary file. For most users 300 to 600 dpi is all you need correctly digitize your image. If you want full control, you need to invest to the next level of scanners which will probably triple in price.

When I bought it I didn't even know (or care) that the scanner could scan film but the other day I found some negatives at the back of a drawer and decided to try scanning them. I have to say I was quite impressed. Scanned at 2400 dpi, digital prints up to 5"x7" are almost indistiguishable from the photographic prints. I find that the images from scanned colour negatives have an overall bluish cast but this is easily corrected.I have found the scanner's small size and lack of a power cord to be a real advantage; it is handy to be able to tip the scanner on its side and store it out of the way when it is not in use.

I have an iMac with OS 10.3.3 operating system. The scanner works well with the machine once you get through some start up difficulties. If you have programs that run in the classic mode, OS 9.2, then you must turn off the 9.2 system or the scanner will not work. Canon spells this out in the installation directions, but it is a bit of a chore as you have to open System Preferences click on OS 9 and stop OS 9. Then you can scan. As they point out, just hitting quit on the active program isn't enough. If you don't use any old programs, then there is no problem, but most of us do have them. As soon as you use one, OS 9 starts up automatically, and then you have to go through the stop procedure again if you wish to scan. Also, When I first try to print what I have scanned, I am told the printer is off line and I have to stop it, and then restart it to get the print. As you can see, Canon has a few program bugs they need to address. I emailed Canon to see if they have any fixes, but in two weeks they haven't bothered to answer.

I just purchased this scanner to replace a slow, unwieldy HP 5300C. After 1 week, here's what I think.===============================================================PROs:1. Slim form factor.2. Good quality photograph scans. Maybe not for a professional, but for us amateurs, it rocks!3. Very quick scanning4. Negative scannning possible with included adapter.5. Canoscan software definitely a cut above the norm6. Windows XP installation is fast and simple.-->a. Install Canoscan Drivers and software, reboot THEN-->b. plug scanner into nearest HighSpeed USB (USB 2.0) port-->c. You're good to go!7. Full Photoshop Elements 2.0 included================================================================CONs:1. A bit noisy2. Some software supplied as "SE" or limited versions3. Scanning Kodak APS film pictures can be tricky due to the nonstandard print sizes.================================================================A final piece of advice - make sure you acquire the latest Canon software from the Canon, USA website.

I have a Dell with only two USB ports. Using one for ethernet and the other for a Belkin 4 port USB hub for printer and digital camera. I was disappointed when I got the message that the LiDE 80 wouldn't work with a hub but had to be plugged directly into a USB port on the tower. I did not see any information about this in the product information I reviewed before I purchased the scanner. Now I must unplug the hub from the back of the tower and plug in the LiDE 80 before I can use it. A major inconvenience since the Dell tower is in a computer desk and has to be pulled out to reach the USB port.

The Canoscan LiDE 80 is easy to use for a variety of applications and the USB Hi-Speed (no longer USB2) interface is super fast and convenient since it not only is the data link, but supplies power to the scanner. If your power hub is as congested as mine, you'll appreciate this bonus. The LiDE 80 comes standard with a film adapter unit so you can scan 35 mm film or unmounted slide film. although the literature claims the film scanner runs at 2400 x 4800 DPI, I don't buy it. My Nikon fim scanner is 2900 DPI and gives MUCH better scans of 35 mm film. No contest. Then again, it was quite a bit more (4X)expensive than the LiDE 80 and only scans film...The LiDE 80 includes software for automatic retouching of scratches and dust - and it also now has grain and fading correction. I tried these features on color photos taken over 50 years ago and was pleasantly surprised with the results. Overall, this is a nice package that goes well beyond the typical bargain scanner.

Short and sweet I'm just a guy with a computer no fancy computer job no fancy education in computers. I read the manuals but they are not my cup of tea. This scanner took me about 2 days to really get the hang of it. Which was a short time compared to what most of this stuff takes for me. If your like me just go to cannon on your menu open canno scan tool box, click save and start there.

I just bought this scanner for use with my G5 tower, and despite reading reviews to the contrary, it works brilliantly with OS X 10.3.4 - no problems whatsoever. I downloaded the latest CanoScan scanner driver (v7250) and CanoScan Toolbox (v4130) and within a few minutes of installing the software I was scanning with no problem at all. Scanner performs well considering its size, weight and one-cord convenience. This scanner should be ideal for all but the most demanding applications - highly recommended!

Slick CanoScan LiDE 80 works well with documents and pictures where 600 dpi resolution is more then enough. Hi-quality full color slide scan with minimum 2400 dpi resolution - this is a real challenge for newly introduced CIS technology. IMHO Canon made it satisfactory with new LiDE 80 model. I don't want to go digital with my Canon Rebel Ti camera, but for inexpensive photo enlargements, graphic works and WEB design projects I need a good scanner, otherwise digital dark-room with powerful Adobe Photoshop post-processing will be unavailable for me. I do my photofinishing in Fuji minilab, "Frontier" can dump my digital images on CD-R in bulk (1840x1232 JPEG with 300 dpi resolution, price ~6$ per roll) - that's all you can get from advanced minilabs today :-(. As alternative, you can buy professional Nikon Super Coolscan with 4000 dpi - it will cost you 10 times more than SOHO flatbed scanner and you'll never be able to capitalize this investment in our "digital" future.Today with CanoScan LiDE 80 I am in control of my pictures!Software bundle is adequate and Elements 2.0 is a real bargain for Adobe Photoshop novice.2010: Not supported anymore. No drivers for 64-bit Windows 7.

I got this scanner to replace a 1220U for the Film scanning and decent OS X drivers. Unfortunately the drivers on the CD are really bad, but the ones on-line (Tool Box 4.1.3 and LiDE 7.2.1.0 as of this writing) are better, so download them first. PhotoShop Elements is a great bonus but the OmniScan SE is a "classic" only app. Not Canon's fault but still disappointing. Also the film tray is for negatives, not slides so be aware of that. Otherwise it is a nice scanner, light weight, compact and combines USB and power in the same cable (down with AC adaptors!). Mac OS X people get the drivers from the website first.

the GOOD: lightweight, small, cheap, no power cord...the BAD: scans the flattest paper, 99.9% paper only! horrible software! FOR: beginners and only those scanning the flattest objects! i got the CanoScan N650U because of such overwhelming positive reviews, then i bought it and tried it - easy to install and started scanning. it is NOT AS GOOD as the majority online says it is. from the reviews i read, it was suppose to be quiet, fast and easy to use. well...it's not exactly that. i even contacted Canon, who said they would reply back with help in 2-3 days; it's been over a week.it's almost louder than my old scanner, a Umax Astra 1220S and crashes alot more on Window2000! the N650U scans at a good speed, though i had hoped faster for USB. while i do admire it's size and design, i despise it's scanning program and even it's scanning ability, or lack of i should say. the N650U only scans well if you have a perfectly flat object [99.9% paper material] on the surface. if u do not have a flat object and you scan, u will get the blurrest image!!! i'm talking about the slightest wrinkle in the paper, and the N650U will see it as a BIG blur! this scanner is ONLY for the flattest object, dont think of using it for magazines that are creased or such, you will get blurs at the crease. compared to my 1220S, the N650U is a lost cause! the photos scanned do not appear as clear as my 1220S and have white specks on the scans, even after i cleaned the glass surface! while the N650U saves space, it doesn't save the user from agony and professional use. it is overall a waste of money unless you are a pre-beginner at scanning and only scan flat paper images, which turn out decent.my 1220S does a good job of scanning everything! flat objects and 3D objects! the only reason i thought of buying another scanner is because i wanted to use the USB port rather than a SCSI port. and that my scanner is bulky compared to the N650U...but now that i've tried another scanner that seemed really nice but wasnt, i am definitely returning the N650U, then either stay with my old scanner or buy another brand. while the N650U looks beautiful on your desktop, it's not quite useful enough for a true designer working with graphics, drawings, etc. and for under 100$, there is NO such thing as high quality in this scanner. better to try another brand [first] and compare the results.

I bought this for my new 1.33G Athlon 256K PC and so far its been difficult to install and even more difficult to use the arcane software package. Unless your a techy there's a long painful(read months) learning curve here before you're doing anything much more than sending an e-mail attachment to Mom. I hold a Micro-Computer Diploma and Plug and play this unit definitely is not. Where I live the street price of this unit is a firm $149.95 Canadian or $97 USD which makes it the most expensive scanner in its category. The mark up is based strictly on the units'superior super slim appearance and single cord USB connection. Mine came with OmniPage 9.O optical character recognition, ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2000, and ArcSoft Photobase. This stuff is all scary complicated and the Canon Help line will tell you that they largely do not support it. You have to contact the software companies for in depth support and guess what.......nobodies home! Pay for the call, read it on their Website if you can, or they will e-mail back in 2 days. In the case of Arcsoft it is impossible to navigate their on-line manuals...go see for yourself. If you have an extra plug in on your power bar plugging in an AC adapter which comes with most competitors models is not really a big deal particularly if they provide you with software.... Like other writers have noted the plug in on the back of my scanner is loose and flimsy. If you are hung up on single USB connection and super slim profile you might want to check out the offering at GoogleGear.com for $49 USD. Looks the same to me and the software might be better. There are also much cheaper offerings from Visioneer and Hewlett Packard worth checking out in the under $100 category. Both are reliable. OmniPage is difficult to use and I'm stratching my head wondering if I would be better off with Textbridge by Xerox, the other competing OCR software available with some other scanners.d

Unlike some of the others with this unit, I had no trouble installing and using it (one I got the right drivers, that is -- J&R Music world initially sent me the wrong disk, grrr).Though it runs a little slow, it does make reasonably clean scans, and makes MUCH less clutter on and behind my desk than most other machines, which is why I bought it.People need to know, however, that the lens has crummy depth-of field, which means that anything that is not dead flat against the glass will look fuzzy. My previous scanner could make acceptable images of small three-dimensional objects; this one won't.Also, the color balance is kind of off, too blue-tinged. With my Paint Shop Pro, I need to subtract a little blue and add a little red to the scans to make them look like real life.I assume that both these problems (poor depth of field and color imbalance) come from the dim scanning lamp neccesitated by the low power available to the unit.

I am very impressed with this scanner. It is my first, so I don't have much to compare it to, but it worked extremely well once I figured a few things out. One thing you should be aware of; since this unit is powered only through the USB cable, Canon strongly recommends that you do not use a longer cable than the one supplied with the scanner. It's about 5' long, which should be long enough for most. Also, as others have stated, it should only be connected to a direct USB port on your computer.(not a hub, or "daisy chained" with other USB devices). Instalation was easy. Just follow the instructions in order. The software is easy to learn if you have the time to play with it. I didn't, so I went to Arcsoft's web site and downloaded the manual. My first scan was a 3.5" x 5" color photo. I set the res at 600 dpi. It took a LONG time. Then I realized I had the scan size set at 8.5" X 11" (duh). It was scanning the entire flatbed. Once I adjusted the scan size, it scanned the same photo, at the same res, in only about 20 seconds. And it's whisper quiet. I have read others complain that that it won't scan 3-D objects well at all. It probably wont. It uses entirely different technology than older "brighter" scanners which need a separate power cord. I don't see this as a problem for me, as 99% of my scans will be photos or text pages. I would recomed this product to anyone.

Advantages:Works with Mac OS 9.2.1, MacOS X (classic), and Windows2K/ME. Takes us NO space whatsover. Easy to use. Taught my wife how to do my dirty work, er, scan, in two minutes. Perfectly adequate for web work, great software bundle for the price. You can't reasonably expect to get publishing quality results for cheap.Drawbacks: Must use its own port on the computer, or a powered hub, since it draws its power from the USB link. Forget about using passive hub connections like an Apple keyboard, a three dollar hub, or a PCI card. Their consumer website makes no mention of this important caveat, which leads into the next drawback. Cannon's installer stinks on both platforms (Haven't they heard of Install Shield or VISE?), and their consumer support on the web is even worse. If you get stuck, you're out of luck.Still no native drivers for WinXP or MacOSX

I have been using mine for almost a year. Like other who posted reviews the scanner drawing power from the USB might be a hassle for some.I on the other hand found the output to be good but not great. There is some "bleeding" of colors when scanning an image with high contrasts. For example a picture of a red rose with a lush green foliage background. Your image might turn out with a red rose with a hint of green or green foliage with a hint of red.I do admit for (the price) you can't ask for anything more. If you are a casual user and don't plan of making a living scanning images and editing them for later sale this might be the scanner for you. Especially if you like to post family pictures on the web or create nice greeting cards or illustrations for fun.

This is one of the easiest to install and use add-ons I have ever purchased. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, inserted the CD ROM into my drive and it magically installed and was ready in a matter of minutes. It produces stunning images with either a push of a button or few clicks of a mouse. I have scanned everything from a passport page, complete with hologram, to a metal plaque. Each of these present unique challenges to copying and scanning devices because of reflections and the strange things holograms cause, but this scanner made completely faithful reproductions. The software that comes bundled is adequate, but I discovered that my copy of Paintshop Pro version 7 will automatically recognize the scanner and allow me to scan directly into that program. From there I can use the Adjust feature to quickly set quality and save the scanned image in any of the dozens of formats that Paintshop Pro supports. I really like the small size and sleek looks of this device, and the quality of both the scanner itself, and the images it produces are exceptionally high. It meets all of my needs, which are many since I produce a lot of documentation and need scanned images on many occasions. It is also useful for scanning and faxing from your computer, adding even more value. I think this scanner is one of the better values in computer peripherals and I highly recommend it.

Never having owned a scanner - and thus having nothing to compare it to - this scanner produces pretty decent results. I've only scanned a corporate brochure and some Boy Scout patches so far, and in both cases I was pleased with the result. A heads up, though - installation of the software took me over an hour, as I tried to override the defaults and only install the necessary components (for instance, I already have Adobe Acrobat and a graphics editor installed and didn't want a 2nd version of each, etc.) Well, the installer didn't like that and threw a fit, so I had to uninstall everything and start over from scratch. Maybe it's me, maybe it's Canon - who knows. Incidentally, this was on a PC - I also installed the software on my dad's iMac, and it went on without a hitch. Once everything was up and running, scanning was very easy to learn and went quickly. I was really surprised at how quiet it was - it only makes noise when doing a "preview" scan (like an electronic whining, sounds sort of like a can opener). But when doing the actual, final scan, it's so quiet I was tempted to lift the lid to see if it was actually doing anything!Scans look pretty good, but you need to do some trial and error with the settings to maximize the sharpness. No manual comes with this scanner - all documentation is on the installation CD-ROM.
