Perhaps the most versatile scanner yet. Has a true optical resolution of 3200dpi, which means it is very usable as a film (neg/trans) scanner. Canon includes neg/trans holders with the bundle, both for 35mm, medium formats, and 4x5. The software bundle includes Photoshop Elements, an OCR software, and some lesser programs. One great software program that comes built-in is the Canon FLARE 2 dust and scratch removal tool. Unlike ICE, FLARE 2 works on Kodachrome slides. It does not work on B&W. The one-button scanning ability is great if you do a lot of document scanning into Acrobat or an OCR program, but the single button film scanning really isn't useful, as you'll want to go into the Canoscan software and adjust the setting for most scans. I have scanned both transperencies and negatives and the results have been very good. When compared to my Nikon Coolscan IV (a 2600dpi film scanner) the results hold up very well. Several newer Velvia trans looked very good at 3200dpi, even when compared to the scans from the Nikon. The scans are very slow from the 9900F, but the fact that I can scan multiple slide or negs at one time makes up for the lack of speed. Scanning a 6x4.5 medium format neg the results were very sharp but a bit on the dark side. Note that I do not usually adjust for brightness during the scanning process and choose to wait until the image is dumped into Photoshop to do such work. Once adjusted, the scanned image looked excellent -- although the file was over 60mb in size. About the only complaint I have is that Canon chose to make this scanner 8.5x11 instead of 8.5x14 -- having the ability to scan legal size, or oversize prints, would have been a plus.I was very pleased with all of the scans I've done so far, including the 35mm and medium fomrat scans of negatives. The FLARE software really does work well, and is comparable to ICE. The 3200dpi scan gives some huge medium format file sizes, but that is what we want! An excellent scanner at a great price.

This scanner is great!! I cannot say enough good about it. I have had mine for over two years now and I take it with me everywhere my laptop goes including courthouses where I use it to copy marriages and other court documents for genealogy. No power cord needed and is every bit as good as any of my larger HP ones stuck at home.

Since I purchased my first Canon color printer 2 years ago, I've had nothing but positive experiences with Canon products. This scanner is no exception. It's replacing a VERY old parallel port scanner and I must say, technology has come a long, long way.To begin with, this scanner is incredibly fast. Connected to a USB 2.0 port, full page color scans at 300dpi take less than 30 seconds to complete. Most of the time, I use it to scan pencil sketches directly into Photoshop (extremely easy). In gray-scale mode, I can scan an entire page at 300dpi in ~10 seconds...blazingly fast! Top it off with easy setup, self powered USB (no power brick!), and sleek design, this scanner is a bargain.Unless you're doing hardcore, ultra high-res, ultra high-quality, professional graphics work, this is the scanner for you.

The LiDE 50 will not scan at 1200dpi. I'm running a 1Ghz Athlon with 256MB of RAM and plenty of system resources in Windows 2000 Professional. The scans just "hang" at 20% or 90% and never finish. Also, parts in the internal mechanism of the scanner I recieved appear to have minor corrosion on them.I returned the unit and did not waste time with a replacement.

...The product itself worked as the manufacturer described it. Not a single problem occured during my installation (WinXP), and the included pieces of software more than covered all my scanning needs. The product lived up to its promise to EASILY scan and e-mail, edit, and convert the scanned image to word processing text.It is extremely light and very easy to carry from location to location, and that was another great plus. It's ability to stand upright for those tight desk spaces is another feature I enjoy. My only complaint (and I use that word lightly) is the noise the scanner makes when it scans. I've not been around many scanners, but the ones I've heard are quieter than this product. I'd say the sound level is comparable to an inkjet printer pulling paper from its paper tray. Also, even after reinstalling the related software, the three buttons on the scanner don't work. I'm currently looking at the Canon website to see if I can get a more updated driver that would fix this problem. For now, I'm using the included software to do the scanning.All-in-all, I highly recommend that you purchase this scanner if you're for a 'more bang for the buck' scanner and low on the budget. However, for those of you who are professional artist and/or photographers, you might want to consider looking at more flashy scanners for your requirements; this product wasn't exactly blazing when scanning full-blown colored graphics....Mine was also a brand new product too, not refurbished, used, or "like-new" either. Regardless, it's still worth the price for new scanner owners and/or practical/common use.Highly recommended.

If you are in the market for a simple, easy to use scanner for use at home or for light office work, this will suit you very well. Relative to its slim size, light weight, and USB power supply, the speed of this device is excellent. Obviously, bigger, more expensive scanners will be faster. But for home use, this is a great little machine. The USB support was painless for me and the lack of a bulky power supply or another AC cord is wonderful. Installed the software, connected, and scanned a photo in under 10 minutes. The quick start guide is easy to use and clearly produced. All in all, I am very pleased with the purchase. For the money, this is great little scanner.

Being an amatuer photographer, I wanted a scanner that could scan slides and negatives. The 5000F is a flatbed scanner so it can also scan documents which makes a very versitile and useful scanner. Usually flatbed scanners do NOT make good film and slide scanners; the 5000F is an exception. It's actually based on a rather decent CCD technology rather than the cheaper CIS chip (most flatbeds), which is the reason for the very good film/slide scanning performance. It has a special back-lit slot in the cover for slides and negatives. You can scan up to 3 negs or 2 slides at once. It also has an IR dust and scratch removal sensor that works fairly well (but not on scratches). The quality is very very good but the scans are quite slow, even with a USB-2 connection. You must remove a white backing board, insert the negs or slides in provided carriers, and position the carriers in the scanner. The graphics software, Archsoft PhotoStudio, is quite adequate but not nearly on the same level as Adobe Photoshop. There's MUCH additional software for creating photo albums, photo databases, OCR, etc.. Installation is very easy. It took me 20 minutes to install and start scanning after a bad day at work! The quality of the scans is excellent, the scanning software is very easy to use, the software package is quite comprehensive, scanning negs and slides requires some fumbling, and the scans are slow (but I've seen slower). The quality of the slide/negative scans is the MOST important feature to me and the 5000F delivers. **For the money**, I am VERY happy with the package overall.

This scanner comes with a fully functioning Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 CD and the scanner is less costly than the software alone.Regarding the scanner itself, I purchased the scanner to digitize many photographs and documents. The image quality seems to be good. The scanner is powered by the USB connection so there is no external power cord. The speed isn't great but its sufficient for my needs. The scanner has a really great feature called multiscan which is its strongest and weakest feature. This allows you to put more than one photo in the scanner and the scanner scans in each photo into a separate JPG file. When this works it is awesome. Unfortunately about 25% of the time it can't find the edges of the photos correctly and the result is that you have to scan the photos separately.I also like the ability of being able to scan to PDF for documents.

If you plan to use the Canon CanoScan LiDE 50 on Linux, you're currently out of luck. Of the LiDE scanners, the Sane (Scanner Access Now Easy - http://www.sane-project.org/) project only supports the LiDE 20 and 30. That's why only 3 stars.BTW, though this is labeled as a USB 2.0 product, it also works with USB 1.1.

This scanner has probably good hardware but you can expect big problems with software. The colors of photos scanned from negative film depend on the other shots on the same strip. Unfortunately even if you tell the scanner not to use color correction it does it anyway. Scanning 20+ negs with 3200dpi takes more than 5 hours. It was more or less acceptable for me if I could expect normal result. Unfortunately it happens often that after hours of waiting you have to delete pictures with heavy blue cast and put strips into the scanner in another order and hope that it will work (sometimes it helps).I have asked from Canon customer care if there is another software or a way to configure this one somehow. They answered that I have to ask from Adobe. :-)

I run XP and had no trouble whatsoever installing and using the scanner software. The adobe photoshop elements that comes with this scanner is worth the price alone. There is one glitch however, I have a USB Canon printer and neither will work if both are connected to the computer. I think this may be because the printer is the USB 1.1 and the scanner is 2.0 but I'm not sure.

I bought this scanner because of the Canon name. My last scanner was a Canon, as is my printer. Both have performed flawlessly. I chose this particular model because of the USB interface so I could use it with both my Mac and my Hewlett Packard IBM Clone, and because it has an attachment to scan negatives. As a basic scanner, it's great. Good color. Good sharpness. Though, it's a somewhat larger than you might expect based on the pictures. But don't be misteken -- this is not a professional film scanner. It's an OK mid-range consumer product. Colors tend to be off slightly when scanning negatives using the "dust and scratch" mode. Also, the "dust and scratch" mode is not available in resolutions over 600 dpi. I get the sense that otherwise, this is a powerful piece of hardware. The problem is that the software for it is horrible. The Mac and Windows versions are identical, and neither is really up to the task at hand. They are poorly laid out with no clear-cut way to perform simple tasks. If you're scanning into something like Photoshop, it can control the scanner through the TWAIN driver. But if you just want to make a quickie black-and-white scan of a piece paper to fax to someone, it's too much of a hassle. Again, hardware quality is great. But the software leaves a lot to be desired.

I have purchased two of these scanners because I was hoping that the first one was defective. It was, and I think the second one was too! The closest I can come to describing the problem is to say that there was condensation under the flatbed glass. It dried and left a residue that shows up on every scan. The first time I thought this was a fluke (although I had read a review that said it happened to them.) so I returned it and ordered another. The same thing happened with this one. When I called Canon to ask about the problem they played dumb and said they hadn't heard of this problem. Well it happend twice to me and at least once to another review so it does exist. The biggest problem I am going to have now is finding another scanner that has the multi-scan feature. It was very cool to pop four pictures on the flatbed, scan them, and have them come out as four different JPEGS. What to do?

I was researching scanners for a long time and finally debated between the Epson 2400 and the Canoscan 5000F which cost about the same. The Epson 2450 Photo seemed to have better image quality but cost about twice as much, and the Canoscan 8000 is only a bit faster and allows you to scan more slides at once than the 5000 model. Reviews seemed to favor the Canon model for color accuracy and the Epson model for speed. Moreover, Epson's support for Mac OS X is flaky and you have to download extra drivers from Epson's website.Well, I got the Canoscan and I'm very pleased with my purchase. Both image quality and speed surpassed my wildest expectations as I had an Umax Astra 1200 before. The scans are fast and colors are absolutely brilliant. Since I mostly scan color slides, I was again pleased to find out that the quality is really, really good. Scanning slides at 300dpi for 4x10 prints is a good compromise of quality and speed. You can scan two slides at once, which takes about 5 minutes. Slide scanned at 2400dpi take about 10 minutes and result in very large files of 250MB or more in Photoshop. Again, scans at this resolution are absolutely brilliant and are great for 8x10 enlargements. The local camera shop can't produce any better enlargements.Canon supports Mac OS X out of the box. No need to send in a card to Epson or download beta-version Twain drivers from their web site. Just install the software, reboot, plug in the scanner and you're all set. The included software works well with PhotoShop and offers many customization options. All in all, if you're looking for a high quality scanner at a reasonable price, the CanoScan 5000F is probably the best you can get.

This is my third attempt at using a scanner. Microtek is for people who know what they are doing, i.e., not me, and Epson 1660 wouldn't work with my eMac, so after much research and with the great Amazon price, I decided to order the LiDE50. I had some trouble installing the software (my fault) but have been able to scan with no problems. Having to use Classic is a drawback, but one I can live with since I'm able to get the scanner to work. It doesn't seem to make much noise at all, little beeps like R2D2, and its diminutive size is great for my small desk. It is very sleek and seems to be well made. Since I've only had the scanner a few days my first impressions may change later on, but right now I am very pleased with the LiDE50.

I bought this scanner because I wanted quality with out breaking the bank. I am running this on P4 1.8ghz with 1GB of RAM. I am using the USB 2.0. The scanning speed is outstanding if you are scanning photos at 300 dpi or less. 600dpi is definitely acceptable. Scanning at 1200 DPI, well lets just say I never let it complete and set it back to 600 DPI.Another reason why I bought this was it scans 3 negatives at once. If your primary reason for buying this scanner is for the negative scanning, you may be better off buying a film scanner. The quality of the negative scans are great, but it is a slow process.I have not done OCR scanning yet.I have not done the multiple photo scan. The only thing that really annoys me are the buttons in the front. I sware I must hit one of the buttons accidently every 5th opening of the scanner cover. For the money it is really good scanner. I would recommend it at this point. I will update my review once I have done OCR and Multiple Photo scanning.

I bought this scanner after a couple of weeks of research at consumerreports.com, epinions.com, amazon.com, etc. Finally decided to buy this unit for my small office graphic scanning needs (small web design firm). I couldn't be happier. It is VERY easy to install the software and get the scanner up and running -- less than 10 minutes! Unbelievable. I previously had a scanner that took forever to warm up and almost every time gave me a conflict error with my printer (I had to daisy chain the printer and scanner). The USB/power cable is a fantastic idea. I just started scanning some previous magazine work I did and the results are good -- I have yet to work out the specifics of adjustment. However, due to the ease of which this installed and was ready to use, I have no doubt that this will be a piece of cake also.I highly recommend this scanner.

The one thing that impressed me most about this scanner was the ease with which it interfaced with my hp printer. I just went through the normal install (on Windows XP) and every function that I've tried out on this scanner, including the function buttons on the front, worked with every peripheral I have on the first go. I was away from the tech scene for a few years while I was in the military, and I definitely don't remember any periphal being this easy to interface with other components of differing brands. Other than that, the picture quality is great and the speed is just fine for one or two page scans. I got pictures to come out perfectly clear with up to 5x magnification. It might be good for higher magnifications, too, I just haven't tried them yet. Some people have complained about the speed, but if you want to scan a 50-page report, you need to take it to Kinko's instead of using a home flatbed. Or you could spring for a business-class scanner; remember, this one is only seventy bucks. It comes with some decent software, too; I'm looking forward to trying the OCR, where it turns scanned print into text that can be edited. Maybe that's a common feature nowadays, but it seems pretty cool to me. I did some shopping before I bought this thing, and it is definitely the best home-use scanner that I found.

I will keep this short. My last complete review was not posted. I bought the Canon LiDE 50 from Amazon & installed the supplied drivers. The drivers do not support XP, & the Canon Toolbox is very buggy supporting PDF. Went to Canon's site. It states XP users should not install the drivers that come with the unit! Their update is also very buggy. If your stuck try unloading all Canon stuff & restart your computer 3 times. Then install their update. It might work some of the time now.

This scanner has very nice features. It's very slim and functional. Image scans are fast and have good image quality. The ScanGear is very simple to use. You can scan multiple photos at the same time and have it on separate windows in Photoshop (not included). Best of all, it's compatible with WinXP and is USB2.0 certified.Works well with Adaptec XHub4 for Notebooks too! That is if you're short on usb ports like me. Tried it with Targus' Cable-Powered USB2.0 Hub, didn't work. I suggest you use it with Adaptec hubs and adapters coz they're the ones certified by Canon to be compatible with the scanner.

I was a bit hesitant to buy this scanner given its low cost, but I find myself very happy that I did. It is very easy to install (just remember to follow instructions and install the software before connecting the scanner to your PC).I've scanned about 50 photos and a dozen documents the past week, with very good results. Documents come out clean and crisp, and photos scan very accurately. What more can you ask for?The only complaint is that it is slower than other scanners I've used. And more DPI scans are very slow. Given that I am only scanning a limited number of documents, that is not a big deal for me. I find the 3 buttons upfront very useful and easy to setup. The first button I use for scanning documents, the second for copying documents, and the third for copying photos.Re: copying photos, I've had inconsistent results scanning multiple photos at once. In multi-scan mode, the software is supposed to automatically recognize and seperate multiple photos, yet I experienced inconsistent results. Not a biggie for me, and I remain very pleased. This scanner is a great value for the money.

My father always told me I would never go wrong with a Canon. Canon has proven my father's point time and time again, and they don't fail to do so with the 5000c. I made the mistake of purchasing a lesser-name scanner to save myself [money]. When the quality and reliability were found lacking, I packed the lesser-name up and left the store with the 5000f.I'm so thrilled by the quality i don't know if I can write a detailed, fact-based review on the scanner! All I really need to say is IT'S INCREDIBLE! DON'T EVER BUY ANY OTHER BRAND! However, I know you want details. Here they are: The film/slide scans are AMAZING! They're crisp and clear --honestly unparalleled by any scanner (even professional models) I have ever used. Many scanners will blur your slides or provide unacceptable resolution for any serious utility. Not the case here.Standard scans are great. I MUST mention the FARE (Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement) technology employed by the 5000F. How many times have you been digging through your storage to find a great old photo that has been marred by the hands of time? Using FARE, you won't spend hours retouching the photo in your photo-editing software --it's all done AUTOMATICALLY! No example picture could ever explain how well it works. Go to a store and try it yourself. You WILL be blown away. All of these features are tied together with a USB 2.0 interface. Gone are the days where you listen to your scanner scan, stop, send, scan, stop, send. With the increased bandwidth of this new technology scanning is quick and easy.I'll say it to you this time: You can't go wrong with a Canon!
