I shot slides for 20 years before I purchased a DSLR. I have approx. 10,000 slides with no way to show them unless someone came to my home and I set up the slide projector. With the 9000F,I am transfering selected slides to my computer and don't seem to get any loss of quality. I can correct copies of slides now, including making old slides that may have faded, look like new again. And the scanner comes with Photoshop Elements 8. It is a flatbed scanner that will also copy negative film. I have made up to 16 X 20 prints with no loss of quality. A great machine.

This scanner is excellent. It scans a group of papers all together, both sides, creates a searchable PDF (OCRs it), and is amazingly fast. The only downsides: (1) The Evernote web site says that the software comes with scan-directly-into-Evernote feature, but it did not -- I had to dig around on the internet to find the latest version of the scan software that does include the scan-to-evernote feature (but once I found it, it does work), (2) It was tricky figuring out how to insert a group a pages so they came out in the right order and right orientation.

The scanner works just great - terrific images. The Canon scanning software that comes with it - terrible user interface. Too many features having nothing to do with just running the scanner. I don't need a picture organizer; I have iPhoto for this. Push the button on the front panel and the menus jump around on their own quite mysteriously. Ugh. Who designed this junk code? Five stars for the hardware; none for the software.Follow-up on the software. As it turns out, if you install the included Photoshop Elements, the operability is quite nice. I'd still avoid the Canon software except for installing the drivers.

I don't usually write reviews but this device only has a handful of reviews and deserves more for how well-designed it is. It works quietly and quickly, and the included software works well, especially in combination with novaPDF. No time needed for warm-up. The footprint is tiny and the device is small and light enough to bring on the road. A few sheets have come through skewed, but I just ran them again and the problem was easily fixed. I would have given 4.5 stars because of this, but don't mind rounding up to 5. Great for keeping copies of important documents; wish I had taken the plunge earlier.

Tiny and light with attractive and clever design features (this has to be the prettiest scanner you will ever buy), fast enough even on one USB connection, and best of all nearly SILENT compared to my all-in-one printer. I especially appreciate that the pieces that wear out first are designed as consumables (instead of how another major brand is designed, where they assume you are going to replace your entire scanner once the sheet feeder wears out). The output quality is also far better than my circa 2005 all-in-one from another maker, which I don't really understand as they are both scanning at 600 dpi, but there it is.

It is amazing at how fast it is. The only fault is trying to scan receipts from registers. It is difficult to have them feed straight as they keep wanting to go crooked. The light weight receipts need to be fed one at a time. At least that is my experience. Full size documents are a snap.

The last scanner i bought was an HP scanjet flatbed circa 2000. This scanner is much smaller, much faster, just as accurate, more flexible, has better software, and is overall much easier to use. Being portable and running off the USB connector is just a bonus. OH! And it is duplex, which puts it in a whole new league for me. No more flipping to scan both sides of a document, and it automagically deletes any blank back sides. Best of all, it scans jpg's or pdf's directly into Evernote. If you use Evernote, this is the scanner to get.

This portable scanner is small, light and quickly sets up. Just plug in a USB cable and it is recognized. The cover flips open to hold multiple page and scans each quickly. Set up allows it to scan both sides of a printed page but does not scan a blank sheet. Scans in color and shows you each scan on screen so you see your copy. Easy to save PDF into a file and repeat the next sequence of scans. This beats hands down my desk scanner combo machine in the office; much faster, easier, simpler to use. I may just use it in the office as well.

I've used this scanner for PDF, color pictures, black and white negatives (from the 1930s), and color slides. Everything turned out great! The editing program on the scanner let me brighten and fix the contrast on the old black and white pictures till they're perfect. Virtually no warm-up time either; click what you want to do and it's done, just like that! It also came with discs for Photoshop Elements for Windows and Mac; a nice bonus!

The scanner is promoted as being programmed to scan directly to Evernote. This was the primary reason I purchased it. Unfortunately, its not set up to scan right to Evernote and when you call the Canon support line for help, they don't have a clue what you are talking about.

I bought this scanner for light-duty scanning of letter size sheets and have been highly impressed by it. It looks miniscule but folds out to a fairly impressive size. With just a USB cord plugged in, it'll do 15 b/w pages a minute, and although I haven't tested it, it's supposed to be faster when using the included USB power cord. It does great scans and comes with a TWAIN and ISIS driver disk to enable 3rd party application scanning with the unit. My only complaint is that the Canon driver and software disk comes in DVD format, though it only has about 600mb on it. For older machines without DVD drives, this was a poor decision on Canon's part and one that is not borne out by the amount of data included on the disk. Otherwise, I wholeheartedly recommend this scanner and intend to buy at least two more soon.

I got this to scan my receipts and statements. I had flat bed Canon Lide 500 and this little scanner beat it by a wide margin. At 200 dpi it could scan 20 pages duplex while my flatbed scanner is still working on the first side of the first page. The built in storage that allows it run the scanning software without installing on the host computer is especially convenient. The unit does have a small consumable separation pad, which might need replacement.Definitely a recommended buy if you have a need to digitize your documents.

I bought this scanner thinking that it was compatible with Windows Vista. Unless you go to the technical details section for this scanner in Amazon.com, there is nothing that says this won't work with Vista.Once I received the scanner and opened the box, I found a sheet of paper that instructed Vista users to go to[...]I did that, but the Lide 25 scanner wasn't one of the ones listed! Now that's just dumb on Canon's part. So then I searched Canon's website for Vista compatibility for this scanner, and after awhile I found the Vista drivers and software for this specific scanner, and started downloading the ones shown. Beware though--even though you have to specify the scanner model and OS in dropdown menus, they include OS/X software in the list, and it's not made apparent until you click on them which ones you're about to download. So I downloaded the correct drivers and software in the list and installed them, but there were two other Vista-compatible software programs I still needed, ScanSoft OmniPage SE OCR and ArcSoft PhotoStudio. So I went to the ScanSoft website and downloaded a Vista-compatible version, but when I checked ArcSoft's website, I couldn't find a way to download PhotoStudio without paying $80, $30 more than I did for my scanner! Checking the Canon website again, it said that PhotoStudio wasn't compatible with Vista, so I was out of luck, since I primarily intended to use the scanner for photos. There remains only one thing to do--get an RMA and send this hunk of junk back to Amazon.com. While it may have been my fault that I didn't read the technical details to find out which versions of Windows this scanner was and was not compatible with, everywhere else it says that it is compatible with Windows. Well, Vista IS windows, and it's been out for nearly two years as of 10/08.Update: I've since replaced the Lide 25 scanner with a Canon CanoScan 8800, and I couldn't be more pleased. It works great with Vista, and comes standard with both OCR software and Adobe Photoshop Elements 5. The scanner also has a lighted top cover to better scan negatives and slides, & includes three different negative/slide holders. It was worth buying it to get Photoshop Elements 5 alone. Forget the Lide 25--go with the CanoScan 8800 and you won't regret it.

I bought this scanner to scan family photos. It got the job done, but as others have mentioned the scanning speed is very slow and noisey.I didn't have any problems hooking up the scanner or installing the software.I scanned about 40 photos, most all at 600 DPI. (The higher the DPI the higher the quality, but also the longer it takes to scan.) I found that it was essential to preview each scan (to adjust the scan area, do any tweaking, etc.), which really added to the scan time.If I were to have more photos to scan than I did, I would look for something faster. But for what I needed and for the price, this is a great scanner.I did have some trouble scanning documents in that many were illegible when scanned. But I didn't bother to look at the documentation for info or tips.I only used the scan feature. However, the scanner I purchased also has a copy and fax feature.

When it works it works fine. But after a few scans the thing tries to calibrate itself and usually fails, telling you to follow the instructions in the manual. I couldn't find these alleged instructions anywhere in the manual or Canon's nearly useless website. Sometimes trying to scan again will eventually work, sometimes not. I had to scan a bunch of old pictures for a surprise party but this thing decided to quit on me halfway through the job. Best of luck to Canon if this is the junk they sell.

So far, I'm pretty pleased with this CanoScan LiDE 600F scanner. After my old Epson 1200U scanner died, I started researching scanners again. I was somewhat depressed when I noticed that most of scanners sold these days are huge. Luckily, this scanner counters that trend. It's got a nice, small footprint and, best of all, doesn't need a separate power connection. Plus, Canon's web site has Vista drivers (as of this writing, version 12.1.2, released June 2007). Since I'm using my own applications instead of what comes with the scanner, all I had to do was download those drivers, install them, then plug the scanner into a USB port. Everything works fine (not the buttons, I haven't set those up yet). Some observations: - I don't know why, maybe the scanner does some kind of automatic processing on the scans, but the scans I'm getting seem crisper and clearer (at the same resolution/color settings) than did those from my Epson. - The driver is very good at finding the area I want scanned and automatically cropping it. I haven't had to adjust the crop area yet. With the Epson, I always had to adjust it. - The speed is pretty much a draw. The physical scan (movement of the scanning bar up and down the platen) takes slighly more time than the Epson, but the transfer of control and data back to my calling program is faster. - The sound isn't loud, but it has a rougher tone to it than the Epson. - The only real negative I can find directly attributed to the scanner is the magnetic "latch" on the cover. In theory, it seems like a good way to keep the cover closed (especially when the scanner is in its space-saving, upright mode). But, in practice, the magnets just make it hard to open the lid. If there were more of a lip available for grabbing the lid, it might not be as bothersome. But, as is, I wish I could remove those magnets.I do have one other problem with the scanner. But, I'm not sure if it's caused by my scanning software (Acrobat 7.0.9) or by the driver. Every time I tell Acrobat to go to the scanner and get a document, the scanner defaults back to Black & White mode. No matter what I do, I can't get it to stick across sessions in Grayscale mode. I'm going to have to try installing Canon's Vista Toolbox software and set up the buttons. Maybe I'll be able to do Grayscale scans from one of them. But, I'd much prefer working from within my application and calling the scanner instead of working within the scanner and calling the application.Ignoring the difficulty I'm having with default settings (since that could be my fault), I rate this scanner at a Very Good four stars out of five. If I could get rid of those lid magnets, it would probably be very close to a five star scanner.

I've used the CanoScan 8600F scanner for two weeks now scanning about 300 color photos, size 4" x 6". It works great with my 3 year old Dell PC running Windows XP with only 512 MB of RAM.I started off scanning negative film of my photos but noticed that even after careful cleaning of each 6 image strip that, more often than not, I'd see specks or fuzz on the scanned image which took a bit of time to correct using the included Adobe PhotoShop Elements 4.0 software (the dust/scratch removal software too often takes off image details that you will want to keep). I decided to try scanning my 4" x 6" prints instead of the negatives and got better results. I couldn't tell much difference in the resolution AS VIEWED ON MY 1280 x 1024 LCD monitor. I don't usually make prints so I couldn't say how the quality for scanning prints vs. negatives would compare in that department. The good thing was that scanning prints almost always gave me a cleaner image than scanning negatives. And prints scan faster than negatives. You wouldn't think you could scan prints faster than negatives since you can load two 6 image strips (12 images total) into the holder that comes with the unit vs. being able to place only 4 of the 4" x 6" prints on the platten. What happens is that the unit scans negatives ONE IMAGE AT A TIME vs. scanning the prints all in one pass. It takes the scanner about 1 minute per image when scanning negatives. It also takes only about 1 minute to scan 3 or 4 prints so the result is a faster operation when scanning prints than when scanning negatives. One drawback of the software for me was that I found I could scan only 3 size 4" x 6" prints at a time if I wanted to use the "auto-crop" feature. Putting 4 images on the platten resulted in them being too close together for the software to detect them as individual prints. Yes, I could crop them in Adobe Elements but that added more problems with not having specific EXIF information for each image. Bottom line: I scanned 3 prints, size 4" x 6", at a time and was very happy with the speed and quality. The scanner processed faster than I could load/unload the images (I was pulling them out of a protector sheet-style photo album for scanning).I've had no trouble with the unit or the software but I can tell you there is a somewhat steep learning curve if you intend on scanning a lot of images. Figuring out how to customize the lid-mounted buttons/screen-based toolbar (they are duplicates of one another) is essential for faster operation.None of the included software allow you to do any significant EXIF editing. You'll need a different software package for that function. Yes, you can plug-in date of original and a few other items but it is a one image at a time operation and is very time consuming. Get a shareware program like EXIF Utilities to do this on a batch basis.I'd buy this same unit again if faced with the same decision. It is a good value for what I paid at Amazon.com and it came quickly plus was well-packaged.jNote also this unit has a one year warranty vs. the 90 day warranty for the error-prone HP models of equivalent specification.
