Do yourself a favor and splurge on this bad boy. The wide color gamut for sdr and nvdia filters are awesome in 422 but, hdr like in the Re2 remake will blow you away in 444. I have no idea how anyone complains about the fan. The monitor doesn't have speakers, so any sane person would be wearing a headset and would never hear the faintest sound the fan gives off. 10/10 would buy again but, wife would leave

Naja.

Also.

Hat was.

Also ab den Fuß.

Kein Lüfter ...
Geräuschlos.
So wie ein Monitor sein sollte :-)

Die Soundausgabe ... braucht man gar nicht probieren. Grausam.

I 144Hz in 4K li raggiungerete solamente in sogno!!!

I had high hopes for this monitor, but I have been constantly disappointed. I was willing to forgive the weird looking text due to the BGR (rather than RGB) subpixel layout, but this monitor also has an incredibly annoying backlight flicker whenever variable refresh rate (VRR) is enabled.

When running the monitor with VRR off the picture is stunning and the HDR 1000 brightness is incredible, but being unable to use this monitor without disabling one of it's major features is an absolute deal breaker. I purchased this monitor in May and having now spent nearly 4 months testing a total of 3 monitors though the ASUS ROG RMA process I am now completely done with any hope of receiving a fully functional screen. The money they are asking for this thing is an absolute disgrace.

As of August 26th 2020 the monitor has ceased working entirely with the splash logo barely flickering when powered on, no OSD is visible and the screen is completely blank.

For someone who has dealt with using a TV for 15+ years as a monitor due to being 10 ft away. You need this for yourself. Money is no cause when it comes to this to yourself. Real 4k, Real 120hrz (None of that Tru 120hrs) no more 40ms delay think more like 4. If you area hybrid gamer that uses a PC as a console. This is for you.

Self info. Went through 7 TV's in my lifetime seeking that perfect one. this is it your search ends here guys. From all my testing only issue I've found is doesn't allow you to light up your room at night. Keep in mind you need a Display port cable version 1.4. to get the 120hrz default cable comes with it doesn't support it due to being HDMI.

For those PC hardcore guys? Keyboards are the best. this monitor sucks compared to X? This is the first step to us hybrid guys. There are only 2 43inch monitors that are 16:9 on the market. Please don't wreck it for us. By giving it bad reviews.

* The big problem *

I purchased this to replace an older 60hz monitor of the same size and resolution. However, upon turning it on to my Windows desktop, a problem was immediately apparent. Text looked wrong. Especially small text with fine 1-pixel-wide lines. It is like there is a little bit of vertical blur smearing the fine lines. It looks like a poorly configured sharpness setting, except there isn't a sharpness setting on this monitor, and the problem fades away toward the bottom of the screen! (see pictures!) It is a little hard to discern in photographs, but in person, it makes regular black-on-white text look like it has a drop-shadow.

I believe that many people notice this problem, but for lack of a better explanation, blame it on the BGR subpixel layout. I must emphasize that this problem is entirely unrelated to the BGR subpixel layout. Every 4K 43 inch panel I've ever seen (and I've seen several) has a BGR subpixel layout, and the effect of using RGB subpixel antialiasing on a BGR panel is so subtle that most owners never notice a problem. This monitor's problem is different, and can be most easily confirmed by viewing a sharpness test pattern on the monitor.

* No solution from Asus *

I contacted Asus tech support about the rendering problem, and their reply was a generic copy-and-pasted list advising things like using the auto-adjust button (yes, the one from old VGA monitors, that doesn't even exist on this model), running native resolution (duh), and trying different cables. I tried different cables, and there was no change.

After several replies, they suggested that I return the monitor for a replacement. However, before I returned the monitor, I wanted to know if a replacement would have the same issue. So I scoured various internet forums and was able to receive confirmation that mine was not the only panel with this particular flaw. I returned the monitor for a refund instead, and I will eagerly await the release of a better model.

* General panel quality *

To be fair, many people run this monitor with 125% DPI scaling, which largely masks the effect of the panel's rendering problem. It is also a non-issue in most games. So I will briefly discuss the panel quality compared to others I have used.

This panel has notably poor viewing angles, a fact which my brother was quick to point out whenever I tried to show him something on it. He would look over from a steep angle, and it would be too washed out to make sense of anything. Inevitably, he had to get up out of his chair and move over to look from a better angle. Not so with the LG IPS monitor I was using before (and after) this Asus monitor.

Motion blur is pretty bad for a gaming monitor, too. I spent quite a bit of time playing WoW Classic on it, and green player names drifting by had a distinct streak behind them, especially in dark environments. This was even with overdrive set to the second-highest setting. The highest overdrive setting was drastically overdone to the point that it created horrid overshooting artifacts everywhere there was motion, making it basically unusable for gaming. This monitor does use a VA panel, and VA panels are known for this kind of streaking, particularly when transitioning to/from black. I cannot compare this panel's performance with other VA panels however, as I have never used another VA panel for gaming.

* Conclusion *

As much as it has been eagerly anticipated, I must recommend skipping this monitor. More-advanced models like Acer Predator CG437K and Asus XG43UQ are due to be released soon (around the end of 2019), and with any luck, they may not share the same rendering problems as the Asus XG438Q.

Let me start off by saying that I did a ton of research online before making this purchase and to be honest, I was nervous this would be awful after reading and watching every review on the net. But now that this glorious monitor is sitting on my desk, I realize just how outrageously nit-picky the tech reviewers online can be. Most of their complaints are about tiny differences in specification numbers and subjective opinions that at the end of the day, are virtually imperceptible.

A lot of reviewers complained about the bezels being wide, but I think they're fine. I've heard complaints about text being illegible but text looks just fine to me at 125% scaling with no ClearType tweaking. They said the pixel response times are slow but it feels extremely snappy to me. People whine about the stand not having height or swivel adjustments, but I think it looks dope and the tilt is all I care about. Others complain that you can't do 10 bit color at 120Hz without chroma sub-sampling, which is true but I'll be damned if I can tell the difference between 8-bit and 10-bit color. One guy complained that it was way too big and nobody needs a monitor this big, but it's just perfect if you have a grown-up sized desk with a keyboard tray that positions you ~4 feet away. I even saw a review that complained about how no cables or remote batteries were included, but they must have had an engineering sample because mine came with every cable you could ever need and batteries in the remote.

Ignore all the nonsense. This monitor is pure awesome! I am totally blown away at how much of an incredibly massive upgrade this is from a 1080p HDTV @ 60Hz. The refresh rate makes everything feel silky smooth as long as you have the video card to drive it and configure your game settings properly. The colors are really bright and vivid. There is no perceptible backlight bleed or dead pixels. The 4K resolution is beyond amazing. The brightness is so intense I actually turned mine down a bit from the factory default. When you shut your computer off, the monitor only displays a brief message about no signal then the screen goes black, so you can just leave it powered on all the time if you want.

I'll be brief, as I'm typing this on my phone.

The monitor itself, the specs and the perceived build quality is excellent out of the box. It's immersive. But that's about it.

I've followed this with interest for nearly 8 months. But the smearing on this monitor is unbearable, even when tuning it with many different profiles. If playing a slow paced game, you'll get a motion blur effect. But if you're doing anything that has an inkling of speed, it'll be like someone put vasoline on your monitor. This persisted across 4 DP cables that have the bandwidth to drive this. I started to get motion sick from this.

Even worse, there's a quarter-sized 'shadow' in the lower left quadrant. It's fairly centered and took me a few days to notice it, but once I did it's impossible to ignore. It's only really noticeable when viewing on a light blue screen (like a sky box) and when the camera is moving. I attached a video and it's hard to see it but it looks like a smudge. It's burnt in. No amount of screen scanning or other fixes resolved it.

In a monitor this expensive, I can't believe this passed the uniformity tests. Save your money and continue to wait if the size is what you wanted. Maybe even wait until a different manufacturer has a go. But with these panels coming from AUO, it's unlikely different brands will fair much better. It's a shame buying monitors nowadays requires such a time premium in terms of research and exchanges to get something that actually works.

Update: The whole right side of the monitor also flickers depending on the colors that show. You can reliably make this happen if you have a white browser window open, then minimize it to a darker hue. It will flicker for 10 seconds. Persists across different cables.

Unbelievable. See video for demonstration of both the issues I've outlined.

Box arrived badly hit on the side...when picture was taken as prove that it was left in front of my door, the hit side was hidden...This is a Prime product...was it shipped and handled by Amazon? I doubt it, in 5 years with Amazon something like this had never happened...still...the monitor came damaged on the side...how stupid! An over $1000 destroyed and left in front of my door as if nothing had happened! I was sorely disappointed.

---------------Update Nov. 12, 2019---------------
As I called two weeks ago on a Saturday I was promised that I would have someone pick it up on Sunday and that by Monday I would have a replacement.
Relieved I ended the call and did not think much of it. I received no confirmation email. Called again, another agent said that I would get the confirmation 3 hrs later...still no confirmation, called again...explained to another representative and then I asked for a supervisor, explained part of the problem again.
Supervisor was extremely nice. Explained I would not have the monitor picked up on a Sunday but on Monday, and that there are no replacements, and nothing on the warehouse to sell me. Fully refunded...still in process...a week after that I noticed the monitor back...ordered it.
Box came perfect, I even saw the handlers who gave me the new monitor with a big smile. Unpacked and I am using it as I type...still I have a new problem...the screen constantly goes off and on for like a second or two...why is this happening? My other Asus and an LG monitors in my office do not go off...why is this one going off? It seems to me something to do with the static...If I am wearing a robe with much static it will go on and off some 20 times until I lose it, turn it off, and remove all my clothes to be able to use it...this monitor is either sadistic or I am the biggest unluckiest shopper right now...what will I do?

I will call technical support, if it does not work, I return it and maybe...maybe...order a third one just in case...there...it just went off twice...anyways... In the end...I want to keep it, it is beautiful, the settings are hard to follow and the pixels are not as perfect and crisp as they should be, but it is not that bad either, the 43" is something I am used with now...if I end up giving up on this beautiful monitor, I will have to find another brand that is about this size and can actually ... work...

Stay tuned, next update coming up...one start added, let us hope Amazon can help me keep it.

--------------Updated Feb. 23, 2020---------------
I got a third one. No cracks...no scratches...trust me...I tried to find a new reason to get upset but Amazon was so good this time! No flickering, no screen leaking...I have gotten this one since December and I love it...gaming and programming is awesome. Amazon prime redeemed itself!

--------------Update Sep. 25, 2020---------------
My monitor started flickering, or going on and off just like the second 10 months later. Sad

Winner winner chicken dinner! This thing is awesome! Everyone saying the text sucks or whatever, you can spend 2 minutes and make a few adjustments and it's clear as day. Some things need adjustments color etc. A fast Google and you can find the right settings. But once you take the 5 minutes it's absolutely beautiful. 4k 120hz 4.4.4 is just fantastic! TLDR; The default settings for this monitor need to be changed, because, out of the box its not that great. The terrible BGR pixel format nearly ruins what could be a perfect product. Despite those things, after using TFTCentral's setup guide I'm happy with the product overall.

I'm very pleased to finally have a legitimate gaming monitor this large with such impressive specs. 43" seems just about right for 4k @ 100/125% scaling in windows.

That being said, the BGR pixel format of this display was a poor design choice. We have all grown accustomed to various RGB layout screens, so when you first turn this monitor on at default settings the picture is terrible. Text is noticeably blurry for desktop / productivity use and the FPS gaming experience is not that great either. There is a very high level of ghosting particularly with dark colors (While playing Borderlands 3 i felt like i was drunk).

Its not all bad news though! After doing a bit of hunting around, TFTCentral did a great write up on this monitor. I highly recommend reading the article, grabbing their icc profile and using the monitor settings they recommend. It significantly improves the usability of this monitor in all aspects. After tweaking the settings, Gaming is great!, desktop use is acceptable, but a far cry from an IPS display.

I was waiting for this monitor since it was announced. I had a 43 inch Acer that it replaced and I have to say, I do like it a lot. The packaging it came in was some of the best I have seen, even better than my Samsung QLED TV .

The build quality is top notch. Very nice and sturdy stand. I have wall mounted mine so it does have VESA capability. I didn't install the ROG LED but I like the fact that its not hard mounted and you can place it wherever you would like. The biggest issue I have experienced is running games at 4k HDR. At 120 hz you will need to replace your cables. I had to do a firmware update to my 10 series 1080ti sli setup and that really didn't even help much. Flickering and crashing happens constantly. I have to stick to 100hz. Maybe when I upgrade in the future to the 20 or 30 series I will utilize this better for PC.
I also use this as a mini TV for my PS4 PRO and X1X. It works great with consoles. PS4 looks amazing, I am unsure if they do HDR different but the coloring doesn't look nearly as washed out as X1X or PC. At least in RDR2. I haven had the chance to test a wide range of games yet.

I did have to fine tune the color and motion settings as there is some ghosting if you turn the OD up too far. I was able to get mine to level 4 without seeing too many issues. I know there were some negative reviews for input lag but honestly I haven't noticed a difference between this or my other monitors I have used in the past. (Samsung CHG90, Acer Predator X34).

The speakers were another great addition. I use this on my PC desk next to a 49 inch ultra-wide monitor so I am very thankful it has decent speakers. I used to use a mini sound bar but these are a way better addition for me. Are they the best speakers? NO. But they do the job nicely and if I want better sound, I just throw on my headset anyways.

All in all I highly recommend this, especially since it's at an "affordable" price point. I was going to buy a TV but I didn't want to spend 1500 and have terrible input lag and glare like crazy. The coating on this panel is very anti glare and doesn't create any grainy like appearance at all, so no worries there.

This is a gaming monitor, so that is what my review is based on. I did my research prior to making this purchase. I am currently using a PS4 pro with a 27" ROG monitor. Which led me to purchasing this larger version.

I went from a 70" LCD tv to the 27" monitor for better response and overall gaming experience. Night and day difference. I have had plasma and lcd, led tv's etc. The price on this vs and OLED tv or QLED tv was in the same ballpark. The one caveat being burn in or picture retention.

I play FPS like COD, Battlefield and currently Apex Legends. HUD in game will burn in because it is static and stays there and with this monitor unlike other options I don't have to worry about that.

Now on to the review. Out of the box it shipped fast arrived undamaged. Took 5 minutes to get it out of the box and set up and running on my stand. I did not Versa mount it as of yet. Fired up the PS4 and spent about 5 minutes tweaking the settings to get a good in game picture quality. Here is where this monitor shines for me. The picture quality is awesome, not quite as bright as my 27", but there is an enhanced feature on this monitor called shadow boost i think, and this makes harder to see areas in game shine while not making the sunlight burn your retinas out of your skull.
I have spent some time with this monitor over the last day or so and the remote comes in handy for switching between video settings and that is about it. I wish it was a more interactive remote that you could control all functions with. That really is my only complaint. I can't speak to the speaker quality as I use a wireless headset. And if I need to say watch a movie with the family I run all of my outside Audio through a Denon receiver and amplifier set up to my surround sound speaker system.
Overall this unit delivers on every visual aspect one could want for console gaming. I hooked my computer up to it as well and it worked well with that as well.
Watching movies through netflix and prime they look fabulous, crisp details true blacks. I am sure movies would look a little better on say an oled tv, but since this was secondary for me the gaming is where it shines. In Apex alone I saw a huge difference, not being blinded by the sun or the ring for that matter yet still being able to see enemies crouching in a corner.
Bottom line if you are on the fence and have a smaller monitor and want to upgrade go for it you will not be disappointed. One of the other selling points is this monitor will be able to run with the next gen consoles as well which is huge right now because I don't want to buy another monitor in a year.
On a side note I am 45 years old so my eyesight is not as good as it used to be, and this monitor makes me feel like a kid again with what I have actually been missing.

I use my monitor for video games, software development, and office work at home.
For gaming, I have had no issues with the monitor. Everything looks great in 4k and runs 120 without much issue. If I focus enough I can tell a difference between this monitor and a TN panel at 144 hz, but it isn't enough to bug me. I would recommend OD level 3, which helped with response time, but minimized ghosting for me.
For software development and office work, having the space of 4k for multiple spreadsheets or an IDE and your program on screen at the same time is a must have. If you've worked with Excel spreadsheets in 120+hz, going back to 60hz hurts.
I'm personally hate the compact design of the monitor's remote. I'm embarrassed to admit it took me way too long to figure out how to get to the actual menu to customize the settings.
At the end of the day, if you want 4k, 120hz, and a big screen, then you won't be disappointed with this. That is my opinion at least.

I had a pair of Philips 40" 4k monitors, and one died. I decided to upgrade slightly on the replacement, so I bought this ASUS. I read all about the BGR sub-pixel layout causing issues, and a whole lot more... but I can tell you, this is by far the best monitor I have used. The text is crisp (I run at native resolution, no scaling), the HDR, although it's only 600, is amazing, and the FreeSync is a great boost to my gaming.

Most reviews call this a gaming monitor, but I use it 10 hours a day as a productivity monitor, and it is SO much better than the other Philips I have, I'm giving away the Philips to get another of these.

Your mileage may vary, but don't be sidetracked by the worrying of some reviewers. Give this a try.

havent had any of the problems people have listed before, almost canceled my order after reading some reviews but then saw how to fix almost all those issues from just googling how to calibrate my color and reading how to turn off the windows text enhancement font.
so far this is one of the best screens i have owned and the best panel of its type i have ever seen.
would always go a panel like this over a oled so you dont get burn in.
so far it gets 135hz when OC maybe i got a good panel iono...

I thought this would be an amazing monitor based on the specs - but I had several issues.
1 - The text readability at full 4K (No scaling) was really bad and blurry. Not terrible for games, but for everyday use - not good.
2 - The image quality is not good at all. First - even on custom settings you cannot get the picture to look natural - it always looks like the Gamma setting is too high - the whole screen has a gray "cloudy" look - either because the View angle is bad, or you just can't get natural looking colors/blacks. The image ghosting looks like a laptop from 1996. It was actually hard to play anything on this screen - even browsing the internet was miserable. I was replacing a 43" Sony XBR 4K (about 3 years old) and this Asus monitor can't even hold a candle to it. Not to mention there is barely any flexibility for inputs and outputs. My TV can only go to 60Hz at 4K, but it looks WAY better. I also get a full android platform as a smart TV on top of being a stellar gaming screen. I'm keeping what I have - no reason to down-grade to a more expensive monitor. I would pass on this one - It's not easy to buy and try this thing - learn from my mistake - and don't even bother.

As good as it gets at the price point... but for it to be easy on the eyes, you absolutely need to be using true HDR display-mode in an operating system that natively supports it, and also 4K scaling.

I initially tried using this monitor on a Windows 7 pc with a GTX 960 and there was no amount of wrangling that could make my viewing experience anything less than visual torture: smeared orange and blue around all the text, cleartype only made some fonts look good while making others into tiny literary needles poking into my ocular nerves, and every contrast ratio I tried was either washed out or baked my retinas until they resembled smoked oysters.

Dropped it on a Windows 10 rig with a 2080 ti, turned cleartype *off*, turned HDR mode in the OS on, scaled windows to 200%, and everything is great. Text adequately sharp, and with HDR enabled, getting the color/contrast ratios looking nice was no more complicated than dragging the sliders around in NVIDIA Control Panel.

Buy only if you have a modern setup; don't buy if you're only looking for a big display.

I was using a 50" TV for a monitor. When it died, I wanted to see what was available in a monitor so I could get away from using TVs. While some TVs are great for this, there are some factors, like input lag, that I wanted to experience from a monitor. This ASUS XG438Q sits very well on my desk with its three point mount. The size, at 43" is quite immersive. The anti-glare screen is great once you get used to it. At first it can seem a little dull compared to when I was using a high-gloss screen but it's still a great picture and having no glare is awesome. The only reason I've given this model 4 starts is because the next version said to be coming out around mid 2020 will be a better monitor. They've improved on this model so I'm unwilling to give the lesser of the two 5 stars.

I do highly recommend this model and can tell you from experience that the size is great. I would not recommend going larger than a 50"-55" display. At 50" I did find myself looking around for the corners of the screen to see a minimap or some other on screen indicator. At 43" I'm not searching for those things as much. I do believe that the sweet spot for monitors will be 45"-48".

The app and the controls for this monitor are great as well. There are a couple of presets and the ability to configure your own settings and save them as a selection in the menu with the presets. It is very customizable.

Of course, without the right video card, you are limited to the capability of the card, so I recommend pairing this monitor with the ASUS ROG Strix 2080 Super. I purchased them together and have zero complaints. You will have to go into the NVidia settings and change it from the default 60hz to the highest option available. If you do not, you will be set to 60hz and capping at 60fps.

This monitor does work with GSync even though it only list FreeSync in the specs.

I'm a bit biased as I moved from a 1440p 34" 60hz panel to what feels like a huge 43" 4k 120hz panel. Games look and feel amazing on it compared to the old monitor. True immersive gaming for the PC gaming crowd. Tested and works on both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 systems. Has a plethora of adjustments for color and gaming accuracy. Check out the Level1Techs YouTube channel for a thorough review of the monitor.

120Hz, 4K, FreeSync 2, HDR....marred by poor black color reproduction. The blacks are so bad, I can’t watch movies on this monitor. Gaming is ok. I’m running a Ryzen 9 3900x, dual Radeon 5700XT, 64GB of RAM, a various NVMe drives. It may be possible that this monitor doesn’t “play” well with Radeon 5700XTs, but that would make the FreeSync 2 feature moot. Maybe I got a bad panel, but, thinking about the size, features, etc. for the price is more the reason. I’ll more than likely replace with an OLED panel. Overall, if you want a large 4K panel, 120Hz, physically appealing at a relatively low cost, this it. If you’re looking for a gaming monitor and a monitor for movies with proper black reproduction, I’d look elsewhere.

Returned this monitor as it is not a competent overall package, Asus should be ashamed of releasing this thing at this price point. The text quality is absolutely terrible even after applying all of the cleartype RGB to BGR "fixes" and pixel format adjustments. The colorshift from 3 feet is so bad it washes out the color around the bezels. Note that these are only problems if you are using this as a primary PC display.

The gaming performance and display quality in games is awesome, the input lag and overall response is worlds better than than my high end 60 hertz 50" QLED TV it is replacing. Would recommend if all you is game on it with a console.

The replacement Acer Predator CG437 I purchased after trying to get the Asus to a usable state is a much better all around PC display with none of issues plaguing the Asus.

If you are using this as a PC display you will need a massive, deep desk

People complained about text at 100% zoom but when it is that small it a letter is like a 1/20 of an inch, it was just to small. The sound quality is pretty good and has some bass to it. I tested the monitor on ps4, Pc(4k 120 fps), and on Switch. All were amazing quality. I had a 32 in 4k 60hz monitor before and this is a huge upgrade. Highly recommend.
