the drive is attached to my network via an IOCELL NDAS box for home media. drive is working perfectly streaming 720 movies with no problem. one issue i was afraid of was that the IOCELL NDAS has no cooling fan however as i writing a constant 500 GB over 16 hours the drive didnt heat up at all. So Far So Good

I Bought this to replace a failed unit and a NAS server. So far so good it seems to be working great. I love Western Digital products because so far I've had very great success with their products.

The Red Drives have a 3 year warrant, and they provide an economical solution to data storage. I would recommend these drives for your NAS appliances.

I found the WD30EFRX at a fantastically LOW price on AMAZON. These drives were designed to work 24/7 in NAS enclosures where typical consumer drives fail due to heat, high usage stress, and 24/7 spinup.Pros: The drives run cool and quiet. I have no problem with data transfer rates which meet the maximum of my NAS enclosure.Cons: None that am aware of.Other Thoughts: No DOA's even after purchasing 8 drives. Beats the odds given by other ratings. At the current time these drives are selling at a discount to other consumer grade drives.

We recently (2 weeks ago) purchased 8 of these drive to go in a Synology DS1812+. All 8 drives are reporting perfect performance with no bad sectors. They are running reasonably cool (33 - 35 C) in a normal office environment . The device is not under heavy load by any stretch of the imagination (basically being used as a backup storage unit), but temperatures do not seem to increase significantly even when the drives are spinning fast. Overall, I could not happier with them.

Not the cheapest but it does seem to be the right tool for the job. Installed in a ReadyNAS Duo v1 and works very well.

I bought 2 of these for a QNAP TS-219 P II. They are so quite that you do not even know they are running. I have not determined power wise how economical they are, but I have not seen my electric bill go sky high ether. They mounted with out a problem and formatted without any issue. I had more issues gettng the QNAP up and running then I did with these drives. I would recommend them to anyone wanting to set up a NAS.

Two of these drives in a hybrid raid setup yields 2.7 usable TB of space. The Diskstation on-board info shows the drives have not gone above 30 degrees C, even 24/7 powered on. The drives are quiet, fast enough that the NAS is the slowest factor (actually, probably the 100Mbit LAN), and pretty cheap considering the capacity. The drives are on the suggested list from Synology.com

Running 2 of these drives 24/7 in a photo-editing PC. I thoroughly tested these drives before I trusted my data to them and they passed all tests. 2 months in, no issues. Since "Samsung" drives are now just re-stickered Seagates with horrible dependability, I'm hoping these WD Reds can stand up to the challenge! So far, so good...

I've had this drive about a month now, and it's performed well & with no issues. I've turned off Windows 7's 20 minute setting for automatically powering down drives, since I've read that the thermal stress of heating up and cooling down can shorten a drive's life expectancy drastically. We'll see how long it lasts...

These drives are great. Ordered one to replace my "green" WD 2TB drive when it died. Before these drives came out there were no options for NAS usage on drives so I went with the cheap green drives. The reds are meant for NAS and 24/7 operation. The prices have gotten a lot better recently to come almost close to inline with the greens. After having great luck with the first I just recently ordered another 2 drives.Another major plus is the additional year of warranty over the green drives. For the minimal price difference these drives all well worth it for NAS applications!

Ditto what others said, VERY high failure rate. Surprised WD would release them given the failure rate and the fact that we purchase more than one since they are marketed as NAS friendly. Makes me wonder if the other 3 are living on borrowed time...

I needed another hard drive to expand my media collection, and this drive has met my needs very well so far. It offers solid performance for a mechanical drive, and so far I haven't had any problems with it. Be aware that no cables are included, so if you need a SATA cable, be sure to buy one.

I popped a few of these things into a Synology a few months ago and so far - so good!!! I think the pricing on this hard drive is more than fair considering it is A) the largest available B) includes technology to prevent those pesky double-disk raid failures C) out-performs any other disk in its class (short of going enterprise level). I am very happy with my purchase and will update these comments if I were to have any issues. But I doubt I will. THANKS WESTERN DIGITAL!

Purchased 2x2 TB drives for my new Buffalo Linkststion Duo Pro NAS. At first I was hesitant to buy these drives because of the 5400 RPM advertised speeds since I wanted fast drives. But I decided to forego speed for reliability since my NAS is to be used for backups. So far the drives have been good. They are not noisy and so far I haven't had any issues. Highly recommend these drives.

Even though these drives are OEM with 3 year warranty, the RPM is only 5900 and not 7200. I do like the massive size of the RAID 5 (12TB) around 9TB after RAID. Would wait a while longer for prices to go down.

Given the increased build-quality of these drives and that they are designed to operate in a 24/7 environment, *and* the fact they run significantly cooler than other WD drives, the RED series is also a much better choice than WD's Green series of drives. I am in the tech industry and researched detailed specifications of these drives vs. others and highly recommend them so far!

Got 8 drives, according to the dates on the drive, five are two months old, three are four months oldInstalled them all and thrashed them a bit. Every drive was able to sustain ~140MB/s read and write (R/W /dev/zero)

Bought 5 (all arrived in working order, packaging was adequate) and installed them into a FreeNAS system. With all 5 drives spinning during an ESXi backup, they're quieter than 2 Seagate Barracuda's performing light OS duty. Here's hoping they prove reliable but with a 3-year warranty and a solid back-up strategy, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I've been running these HD's 24/7 on my home NAS for almost 3 months with no issues at all (knock on wood), they run on very decent temperature which results on low power consumption, fast responses for HD video LAN playback and over-the-internet audio as well. Good job WD.
