Drive arrived at the bottom of a large box, with a few 'air' packets on top of it. Absolutely nothing to stop the drive bouncing around the large box during its journey.

For some reason the "Caviar Blue" series of WD drives will not work with the Alesis HD24 HD recorder (you will get a HD reset error when attempting to mount the drive). I believe this is the only flavor of Western Digital drive that doesn't work in the HD24--the other "Caviar" series drives work great, just not "Caviar Blue." FYI.

I use it solely for storing TV shows recorded from DishNetwork. I used to have a 160GB hard disk for this purpose. But with my wife and I both recording TV shows to that hard disk, I find that we will run out of disk space in one week if we don't keep up watching and deleting the recorded shows -- this is despite the fact that we are only recording in DVD or lower quality (not recording HDTV to my PC yet). With this 500GB hard disk, I don't need to worry about this any more, and I can take my time watching the recorded shows instead of forcing myself to watch the shows just to delete them to make room.When the time comes and I need to start recording HDTV into my PC, I am sure I will get a 1-TB hard disk. Hopefully, by then 1-TB hard disk will price the same as a 500GB hard disk now.

I needed PATA disks to fit in my Lacie Ethernet NAS device.The disks came on time (quicker than expected) were new and top conditionThe speed of the disks is good and the noise is excellentI was lucky to get some PATA at a reasonable price

This bare bones drive has software available at the Western Digital site, which will partition and format the drive and copy the old drive. However, it does not support dual boot. You can partition the drive and copy the data to both OS drives, but the second OS will not boot. Also, Windows prior to Vista is normally limited to 137 GB. Service packs correct this for Windows XP and 2000, but you cannot use the original disks (pre-SP) to install the OS on this drive unless you want to lose access to 363 GB.

The hard drive works great. I downloaded clone software from Westerern Digital and cloned my old drive. not one problem. I would purchase a Westeren Digital drive again.

I returned the HDD because I bought it to use in my ReplayTV DVR but it wouldn't work because of the 16MB cache.I'm sure it would have worked fine in a PC.

I was very pleased to not only find a new harddrive for my computer, but at such a high Gig count and that outstanding price, things were even better. My item arrived a week earlier than I anticipated which made things even better.Thank You.

Nice replacement/upgrade HD for older EIDE systems. Be aware "Bulk packaging", there are no instructions, cables or screws included. You must know how to add a hard drive and get Windows to "see" it. Otherwise buy the "retail" version that comes with the instructions and installtion kit and is cheaper. Western Digital WD5000JB-Retail 500GB EIDE Caviar SE Hard Drive for Desktop PC I see no reason to get this HD when the other is cheaper and the same HD.

I was compelled to give a review based on the 3 bad ones here already.I've had this drive for about a year so far and have had absolutely no problems with it. It runs cool, fast and there's been no problems whatsoever. Most people I talk to trust Western Digital and it's an oft recommended company. I'm buying another soon to place into an external enclosure.

Installation was a breeze. It's quiet and fast. Very satisfied with it. I used to be a big Seagate fan, but have been disappointed with my last couple of Seagates. I now put Western Digital as my personal favorite.

Just installed this drive a few days ago in my machine. Incredible drive for less than $80.00. I noticed a difference in speed right away thanks to the 16mb cache. The drive is extremely quiet. The only problem I had was getting XP to recognize it as a 500 GB drive. It kept wanting to see it as 132 GB. This was easily solved with the Easeus partition program (a free download and an incredible program in it's own right!). Once that was taken care of, everything else just fell into place. Definitely go for the SE16. The shipping was fast and communication was great. Thanks Cyberguys!!!

I initially bought one of these for a quiet PC. Because it was quiet and I never had problems with my WD 80GB Caviar I bought another. Big mistake. The first one died after a few months. The second one died a month later. The worst part is I trusted the drive and used it to back up a lot of my personal music files. I lost all those.I'm surprised because my WD 80GB Caviar was reliable. Seems they're not focused on quality anymore. After this experience I won't be buying WD anymore. I will be buying Seagate or Samsung now. The Samsung's are quiet and reliable. The Seagate I just bought to replace the WD drives that died is working great so far, a 750GB server quality drive, a bit noisy but fast.

I read these reviews and my jaw dropped; I couldn't believe people were having the same problem with this drive.I was so happy when I picked it up; a top name drive for under $100 500gig SATA, not even a month later it crashed. Not worth the deal, I see the price has gone down since I bought it...

I have to agree with the first reviewer - this is the worst drive I have had in terms of reliability. It failed after only a few months of operation. Luckily, it was part of a mirrored RAID set and the other drive is still functioning perfectly. Recommend you avoid this drive.

This drive works fine, but be advised that this particular product is not the "retail" version. If you order this you will get a drive in a bag. No cables, no instructions, no software, etc. You can find all the stuff you need online, and HD's are easy to install...but be aware unless you're comfortable with things like master/slave configurations, jumper settings, etc. you ought to make sure you can round up all the documentation.Drive is 5 stares, packaging (for consumers) is zero stars, I call it a 2.
