This is an excellent drive. Extremely quite. Fast drive, but not quite as fast as the Seagate 7200.12. Compare prices with the Seagate. You can't go wrong with either.

i got this hdd about a month ago this is my first western digital i always had segate so fare no complaints this drive is very fast, quite and trouble free installing it was easy and simple it is an oem drive so no fancy packing i had this thing up and running in no time and started installing windows my system biostar 760g mobo sapphire hd4670 1gb video graphics amd athlon 64x2 5000+ black ed 2gb coriseair 800mhz ddr2 250gb wd caviar blue hdd bfg tech 800 watt psu

The first HD that I received ended up being defective. Other than that, it was easy to setup on my Dell Inspiron Desktop. It was a very simple plug and play since I was replacing a hard drive that went bad.

I have the 500gb version of this drive and WOW is all i can say...for less than $60, i got a quality drive from Western Digital. Check out the pictures i added--they're screenshots of benchmarks/error scans. It performed well, getting close to an average of 100MB/sec read speeds, with speeds up to 115/120MB. This drive runs great, the temperature never really goes above 110F (43C) if you have good airflow in your case. This drive was packed very nicely, in an anti-static bad, and a box with foam cutouts that firmly held it in place, there was no way that it could be damaged during shipping. I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone looking for a great performance drive at a good price. *remember this is the DRIVE ONLY, no SATA/power cables or mounting hardware is included.

I ordred 4 WD5000AAKS. I got three 500Gig drives and 1 250Gig drive, all with the AAKS label. I didn't know that was possible but it is. I was trying to build a RAID 10 and 3 500 Gig drive with 1 250Gig drive won't cut it. I had another AAKS 500 Gig drive and used that and the computers done. I still have the little drive somewhere.

I ordered this hard drive twice. The first time I was sent the wrong drive. It was for a laptop computer. It just so happened that it worked in my laptop so I kept it and reordered. The seconed time I did for a fact receibe the correct part that I ordered. I guess mistakes happen. All in all, I did use both hard drives.

Great value, whisper quiet, delivered quickly and as represented. No retail packaging, which is just fine by me. Bought to replace 160 Hitachi that failed in under 2 years of light use! I have also had issues with Seagate. Always by WD! Not one failure of 7 WD drives over the years.

I bought the WD caviar blue HD after looking at speed tests on many different webpages. Although it is not as fast as its caviar black counterpart, the difference in speed is insignificant while the difference in price is not (check out www.barefeats.com for tests if you are interested, especially this page http://barefeats.com/hard112.html).The HD arrived and was inside my Mac Pro within minutes. I am using it to back up my main drive and it has worked great. Transfer speeds were really fast, above 80 MB per sec on a sustained 150 GB transfer from one internal HD to the other. To be fair, my old HD was probably slowing it down though. I highly recommend this drive, and you can get it at a great price. I really have nothing bad to report about it. Just make sure you have your own SATA cable if you need it, because the drive doesn't come with it. If you have a Mac Pro you don't need that because when you put the drive into its slot inside the computer it connects when you slide it in (there is a connector right there which the drive plugs into when you slide it in).

I used this to upgrade my 80 GB hard drive in my old Dell. I pulled the small drive out and put this 500 GB drive in. I used my Dell System Restore CD's to restore Windows onto the drive. Of course I also had to reinstall all of my applications, but it was time to do that anyway. I was running the same XP installation I installed in 2004.

The drive is pretty fast and allows for allot of storage room. Amazon needs to learn how to pack a hard drive for shipment! The hard drive arrived in a box with a static bag around it and no protective padding at all!!! My drive is warrented until 2012 from WD and it is already making noise upon spin up. So it looks like I am going to have to ship it back to WD for replacement. I would not purchase this item from Amazon again not because of the drive; but because of the horrible packaging the drive was shipped in.

This unit was intended as storage as part of a NAS system. The unit formatted and worked as expected. The only noticeable distraction is the the hard disc seems to whine while in use. This wasn't a problem for my application as the NAS unit is located where the whine cannot be heard.

I have had many drives, but wd is for me the most reliable.Quiet, not as fast as my other drives, but there is a lot more storeagecapability at 1/3rd the price of the other drives.

Never buy Maxtor which fails quite a bit. Western Digital has been very reliable. I use this one at work in my file server for ghost imaging. great product. highly recommended.

Drive is working so far, but too soon to comment on it's quality.BUT the packaging was miserable! Appalling! A little piece of plastic with an inflated bubble that was sitting beside, not surrounding, the drive. Not even peanuts! The drive was sloshing around in the box as if it were an unbreakable chunk of solid steel. Could shock have caused a minute crack in a lead or a solder that will shorten its life? I'll never know - and the fact that I can speculate about that is a black mark on Amazon. New Egg has become noted for bad packaging of OEM drives and I guess Amazon wants to keep pace.

I got this on some kind of fire sale for about an hour where the 640gb blue was on sale for 38 dollars and free shipping. As far as I can tell it works great (I put in in the gfs computer as the main drive using Arconis true image).If its ridiculously on sale buy it, if not the egg has better deals on harddrives

I should have read the prior reviews more closely. Yup, no cable, CD program, instructions, just nothing but drive. You better know BIOS and computers well or you'll wind up with less hair by pulling it out. At least I had mounting screws in my garage. With my luck the darn thing will be a faulty drive I suppose. Don't expect any help from Amazon besides returns. Amazon just ships not explains. At least my friend told me were in the setup you have to go to turn on drive 1 port. GGGGGRRRRRRRRR. If you need help, go to the Western Digital web site.

Bought it for a build. Attached it using the cable (that came with Motherboard). BIOS recognized it first time. Installed Win 7 (RC) on it and was up and running within 2 hours. No issues.The only issue is that Windows 7 rates it at 5.7 (and its the slowest rating on my machine).
