This is my 4th, not because they fail, but because I can't get enough of the 500G AAKS, they are quiet and pretty quick. I have just added this one to my RAID 0 and have 1.7TB of usable storage with an average transfer raid of almost 300MB/s with a Max of 384MB/s out of a software RAID on Ubuntu 10.04. Boot time is about 15 seconds from POST. All in all, these are really good drives.

I ordered this to upgrade my imac G5 160GB stock hard drive. I wasn't sure if it would be compatible as a replacement for the Caviar but it is. The SATA plugs fit just fine. I would recommend this if you are looking for an upgrade to your existing western digital drive.

Western Digital & Seagate both produce excellent drives in which I have a high confidence. My purchase was the WD Caviar Blue with a fairly large buffer. It has a good warranty period (longevity rating in this case). The old WD drive it replaced fell within expected lifetime. The new drives have amazingly fast throughput, but users should not waste their time on drives with rotational speeds less than 7200RPM and buffers less than 16M. Of note is that in most cases, the "bulk/OEM" drive unit is the most cost effective purchase in that these are usually purchased for replacement. Therefore, the mounting hardware is easily transferred from the old to new drive. The data cables are keyed, so installation is virtually foolproof. The new drive's geometry will be automatically recognized by the system for setup and format. This new unit shipped promptly, and was delivered promptly.

Had this HD for about a month now and then it started making some clicking noises and my computer locked up. Tried to reboot system and some files needed for windows to start were not found. Turned it off for a couple of days while I did some research and then tried starting it up.. It came up, so I ran ScanDisk and there were tons of errors. Drive continues to make weird clicking noises. I was able to copy my important data off of it. Will return it for another. I have had HUGE success with Western Digital in the past, so this will not make me switch to another brand, but I will not get this model again.

I have spent LOTS of cash on hard drives and i happen to work in a huge electronics store. They got computers, mobile phones, gadgets, hard drives and sometimes things break down. We got western digital drives as well and i noticed that 4 out of 20 are returned from customers because they crush!!! Samsung hard drives never come back after they get sold. Thats what i noticed at my work and before i posted this i got also the technicals support guys opinion and also now my personal expirience. I have a samsung hard drive for 4 years and i started to get worried in case it crushes down and i loose all my data. So i went and got a western digital. I had it three months and it worked slow and after crushed. I threw him out of my window. My samsung still running. Overall? This hard drives are a waist of money. Thanks

This is an OEM drive so expect that it does not come with a data cable, power cable or screws. Most of these items usually come with other parts anyway, like data cables with a motherboard, power cables as part of a power supply and screws as part of a computer case. If not, they are very cheap to purchase. Software isn't necessary because all the necessary drivers came with the motherboard for the onboard SATA chipset or with the controller card. This is truly plug and play. Plug in the cables, screw the drive into the case, boot up your OS and configure/format the drive. You also don't need a cardboard box.Right now 320GB really the best value for the smaller size drives you can buy. It really doesn't make sense to spend a few dollars less and get half the space. This drive and it's brother the WD3200AAJS are nearly identical the only difference being in the size of the cache (8MB for AAJS vs 16MB for AAKS). Whichever one is on sale is the one to get. I found a sale and got it cheaper than the version with the smaller cache so that is the one I chose. Before that I chose the WD32000AAJS. I notice no difference in peformance despite the different cache sizes. They are both very fast.The drive runs cool and quiet. It's nearly impossible to hear when mounted correctly in a quality PC case. I am using this drive in a new home theater PC that I built so quiet is very important. It's nothing like the drive that sits in my Comcast DVR that rattles away 24/7. This drive has plenty of room for Windows 7 and whatever applications I'll install now and in the future. I keep all my media on a separate server so there's no worries about running out of space. It also runs very cool according to the temperature sensor in the BIOS. That's also very important in the confined space of a home theater PC installed in a media cabinet.I've found WD drives to be very reliable and I hope this drive is no exception. So far, so good.

For those of you looking for a inexpensive hard drive, this is a great drive to use in my opinion! I bought this as a second hard drive in my computer since the original one is only 80 GB and so far in the six months I have been using it, not one problem. I am a mid level computer user in my opinion, so when I read that this was a "Bulk" hard drive, I knew that I would need to buy the cables seperate, not a problem for me at all, but some people will over look this. I started using it with Windows XP, not one problem at all, for about two months I have been using it with Windows 7 and not a problem at all there either. I have a dual boot system and this drive is the drive that now has Windows 7 on it. I bet it took about 10 minutes to install, but the formatting took about 30 minutes due to the size. Long story short, I have way more room now and I have not had one problem yet. I would recommend this drive to anyone, but for those of you out there who are not familiar with "Bulk" items, you will want to make sure that you buy the cables needed too.

I purchased this hdd to add OSX to my current build which was only running windows 7. I have always had WD hard drives and I have yet to have a problem with any OEM models i have purchased. This drive is no exception. I have been using this drive for a couple months now and i am able to switch back and forth between this drive and my other WD drive with no issues.

Just got this drive, you will have to format it before use, but I experienced no issues at all. No bad sectors, no trouble.This thing is fast and quiet. Very happy with it so far...I've taken the time to really get a good healthy install on it and it has paid off. I'll follow up if anything changes, but as of right now I am 100% happy with this purchase!Also, received this in a little under 2 days! Great shipping, packaging was professional - shock mounted drive, original WD box inside of a larger box.

I bought this hard drive to replace one that died in an 8 year old computer. Following the easy installation, I performed a recovery, formatted and partitioned the drive and the computer is back to complete functioning. Runs like when new with additional storage. It was everything I expected from WD. More quiet than the original Seagate. I will be buying an additional one soon.

I already had the 320GB version of this drive in my computer. When I wanted to add another drive, selecting this drive from Amazon was a serious no-brainer. This drive has great specs., (except for the needs of the geekiest geeks that live in mama's basement and just play video games all day) and a price that cannot be beat. Add the manufacturer's 3-year warranty and you certainly have a winner!

I've bought several of these recently, and many Western Digital drives over the years. I have yet to have a WD drive die on me.This one is fast, quiet and cool. A perfect upgrade for my Parents' PC. I also like how Western Digital plainly prints the capacity and other important info on the label in bigger font then other brands.Mine came well packed in a nice frustration free box in a box. air bags took up the empty space.

Great hard drive--500GB for $40 is great, being that many stores/retailers sell 160GB or 250GB (if you're lucky) at this price.Ran HDDTunePro and there's 0 bad sectors. Only bad thing is that the black "paint" gouges easily from screwing into the drive bay.This will be my first WD hard drive (that I have used in a build), I usually use Seagate drives.

This hard drive will do just fine. Get it! Much better than caviar greens and they are good drives that never failed me. I doubt this caviar blue will do any worse. It does what its supposed to do.

I bought this drive to upgrade a desktop computer and install W7 on it. Drive arrived in simple packaging and it was not formatted. Installation was a matter of 5 minutes in my desktop and the system (5 year old Dell) immediately recognized it.Everything went well the very first time; only comment is that drive is so silent I thought it was not working on the first booth after OS installation.Highly recommended.

I build desktop computers for my friends. This is the 4th WD hard drive that I bought. I have not any problems with WD. I am using this 500g as a primary drive and it is working properly. Placed it inside the case, loaded it with Windows 7 and my desktop started up without a hitch. A bonus, it is very quiet.

This is for the WD5000AAKS WD Caviar SE16 5000gbMDL: WD5000AAKS - 00TMA0DATE: 28 DEC 2006DCM: HBNCNV2ABI ran these drives as a pair in a RAID 1 setup on a D-Link DNS-323 NAS enclosure. Worked great until failing recently with no warning (although the NAS was configured to run a daily S.M.A.R.T. test and email me if there was a problem). This afternoon the NAS box sent me a simple message "The Left Hard Drive has Failed".Again, being in RAID 1 mode I did not lose my data (but am doing another backup in case the remaining drive fails). The drives worked well up until the sudden failure. They were configured to spin down after 30 minutes of no activity so I guess 4 years is a good run. These drives do tend to run hot during use though.Newer-model, single-platter drives run cooler and should be more reliable than this old 2006 beastie so I ordered a Samsung Spinpoint drive to replace it. Hope I get a longer life from it.

I bought this drive to use for my Windows 7 backups. It arrived in good shape and formatted easily using Windows 7 disk manager. I connected it with a SATA/USB drive adapter from Cables to Go. Works great, drive is quiet and cool, and I can store it in a fireproof location so my backups are safe.

I purchased this hard drive as a replacement for the one that Dell installed in my XPS CPU years ago. As with most computer components this unit did not have any interfacing problems into the rack. There was no problems with installing Windows 7 and data processing and retrieval seem to work great. I've been running the hard drive for about three week now and I'm happy with it.

Well i used the jumpers and added windows xp......took several attempts but its working, only thing is its only regognising 25% of total capacity, idk wht i did wrong? when XP was setting up it only offered me 125gb of drive to work with...so idk.but the drive is fast and VERY quiet. wish i had the full 500gb tho.

Over the years in building and/or using PC's, Western Digital Hard Drives have always been a standard on which I could rely. In addition to providing solid, reliable performance the price has been competitive and the Western Digital web site has a wealth of information. The info covers not only their latest drives but also older ones. It includes installation help, diagnostic SW downloads & technical literature. When digging one back out of your hardware box to reinstall it there is place from which to pull info, data etc. This is the 3rd SATA internal hard drive in this series purchased this year... 1-640GB & 2-500GB and all have performed well. I have several of their IDE drives in use as well.

Nothing really cosmic about this drive. Pretty much plug and play. No jumpers needed. Plugged it in to my new build, threw windows 7 on it and I was up and running with no issues. I suppose a raptor an ssd would give you better performance, but I honestly don't think I'd really see much of a difference for the price:performance ratio.The only thing I can say negative about it is this HDD is the only thing keeping my windows index score under a 7 with a super high score of 5.4

I bought this as a exact replacement for a failed drive in a relative's desktop. The original drive had failed because the desktop had been knocked over on it's side. The installation was very easy and the reload of Windows 7 went well. Prior to reloading Windows, I ran the CD-ROM based hard drive diagnostic that had shown multiple block errors on the original drive and this new drive ran error free.

I bought 2 of these drives to replace my 4 years old drives. They seem to be faster and a lot quieter than the old drives. The performance seems much better too. They came with a decent generic package with proper protection. they came bare ( no jumper or SATA data/power cable).

I bought this drive based on multiple reviews. It lives up to them, in all respects. I bought it to replace an older, 320 gb drive that came with my Mac Pro that was acting a bit hinky, so I cloned to this new drive. All "hinkiness" is gone and it works well.

I bought this item for my Pentium 4 computer. When I partitioned to 80 GB and installed Windows XP, the system went extremely slow. Computer could start up but hung after 3-4 hour usage. I suspect the Hard disk is faulty or may be my PC is too old to handle a 640GB H/D. Later I bought a 320 GB from a retail shop and it worked perfectly.I returned this item but Amazon.com, handled the return professionally. I appreciate their service.

Purchased this in Nov 2010 as a replacement drive for my iMac G5 Intel. No issues during the install, formatting, reloading of all my software & documents, and performance. Not being a computer guy it was a difficult decision on which drive to purchase with so many options available. Stuck with Western Digital Caviar as the original drive was of the same brand, so far it has performed well and is faster.

Amazon should clarify the information in this article because the WD5000AAKS model corresponds to a SATA hard disk and not a SATA II.I am sure that Amazon will review this publication.

I needed a hard drive fairly quickly to replace a damaged one in a friend's computer, so I ordered it via Amazon Prime, and got it two days after ordering.It's given my friend no problems so far, and is zippier than the "Green Drive" she had in there as a C: drive, which would "save energy" by slowing to a crawl when she was working....

It's kind of weird how Amazon lumps everything the way it is, but this review is for the Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS. These are great hard drives, they've been out for a while but continue to be one of the best performance for value hard drives available. With two of these running my system in a RAID 0 setup, they're cool, quiet, and fast. This item was affordable and very simple to install in a few minutes, even though it was sold OEM without installation instructions. The drive is functioning as expected. My only annoyance was that it arrived without a connecting cable, so I had to pay an extra three dollars and order that separately.

The free shipping seems to be getting slower, but This install went off without a hitch. 7 Ultimate 64 loaded in about 15 minutes and was ready for action within 30 of turning on a new machine, built from parts sold here. Luckily I've never had a hdd fail, as long as they were WD. Besides typing here, This machine is used for gaming and folding while idle. Never had a hiccup, installed 35 days ago. Other than security updates it's never been powered down.ssd's are great for instant access, but for gaming these last well, and are 10% of the cost, for the budget minded.

The hard drive I get is the one I bought, the order was a 500 GB hard drive with 16 MB RAM and got a 160 GB Hard Drive with 8MB RAM. I demand my money back
