Installing, formatting and partitioning the WD6400AAKS in my late-2004 vintage PowerMac G5 was a breeze. I bought it to increase the storage capacity rather than the speed of one of my two internal drives. To ensure compatibility with the older computer, I installed a jumper to reduce the maximum transfer rate from 300MB/s to the first generation SATA maximum of 150MB/s. (This may have been unnecessary.) Even with this modification, benchmark tests show read/write speeds, both sustained and random, for the new WD drive ranging from 30% to 60% faster than with my second drive in the same computer, a Seagate 160GB SATA I model. I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars only because it is too soon to judge its durability. So far it exceeds my expectations, and the price was great. Amazon service also was great.

Inserted two of these into a Rosewill USB enclosure for backup purposes - not RAID, but JBOD.I still have 400+ gb on each drive to use up, so there is plenty of room to grow. Fast and quiet and so far so good. They don't run hot, but I have to credit the Rosewill enclosure for that.WD is the way to go for drives. Pretty sure every drive I have in every machine is a WD at this point.

worked great, only thing that kept it from 5 stars was lack of mounting screws. make sure you order a sata cable if you don't have one. I am using as back up drive for now.mounted quickly, plugged in power and sata cable and restarted computer. hit f1 to make enter setup, made sure it found drive, then saved and rebooted. once xp was back up right clicked on "my computer" then clicked "manage", clicked "disk management" on left tree, found drive in window, needs to be initialized and formated which I did by right clicking on it and clicking initialize. then clicked action up top and format to set my partitions. took about fifteen minutes to format and then it was good to go.

I bought this drive for a new build becasue, for the price, it's hard to turn down. However, when i tried to install windows on it, it wouldn't install, and the instillation would either freeze or give and error and stop. It didn't help that the error messages led me to believe that the problem was with the install disk, not the hard drive. This gave me a ton of stress, and after about 2 days of trying to install windows i tried linux, which also gave me errors, that proved my windows disk was fine, and led me to figure out that the hard drive was the problem. I went and bough a retail 320GB hard drive of the same brand, and sure enough, windows installed fine. Thankfully, amazon accepted the return without any hassle. It'll be a while before i buy another OEM hard drive.

I have a high quality/performance demand and I always research before purchasing. This drive is EASY to install (screw screw plug plug done) and works as advertised. I've had it for about a month now and for the format (Sata II), size and especially the price, you simply cannot go wrong with this purchase.A definite "buyers choice"!PS: Remember, this is OEM so you will need to obtain a power cord and data cable. I already had a few, they came with the motherboard, so no let downs for me. Be prepared... get yours in advance!

I purchased this model about a year ago, and it comes with 5 years manufacturer warranty. Recently I found somehting wrong with this HD and contacted with WD customer service, after several emails back and forth, I downloaded WD diagnostics utility, and got the report "too many bad sectors".Then I was told by customer service that I need to ship the bad HD by myself and have it replaced. It is ridiculous, think about the market value of this HD around $60 to $80, but I need to pay another $20 to $30 to ship it. And who knows how long the HD will last again.I dealt with HP/Compaq warranty regarding the defective laptop before, they basically sent out a package with postage paid already and I don't need to pay anything. A much better way to handle warranty.

Works as it should.All you need is a SATA cable to connect it to your motherboard, a SATA connector on your power supply, and four screws to mount it in your chassis.I'm very happy with the performance, and will probably buy another to use as a back up drive.I downloaded the software off of the WD site, but you aren't missing anything if you don't have it. I made a partition and formatted it during Windows set up, then finished partitioning through the Windows compmgmt.msc. I did use the software to copy a partition off of an older drive, but the utility didn't thrill me. You could probably find another free utility on the web that would work as well, or better.

Well, it came very well packaged and protected, i feel its faster than my previous Barracuda 320Gb, very silent and gets the job well done :), i still cant imagine what im going to fill 500Gb with, but the price was quite reasonable.

I got this Western Digital drive a couple of years ago. The drive worked okay for about a month, then the SMART info became garbled. I RMA'd the drive and got a replacement. All has been good until a couple of days ago, when it started exhibiting the click of death. 450gb of files gone forever. I am glad for the people who are having a good experience with this drive, but be afraid, very afraid and back up your data.My 500gb Samsung, also purchased about the same time is still going strong. Unfortunately, it was not in a RAID configuration. I have never had a Samsung fail, so I think I will stick with them from now on. They seem to be more reliable, because they don't go for the cutting edge which this drive was at the time I purchased it.

Bought a dell xps. of course they felt the need to include the crappiest hardrive ppl make with it(seagate) after 2 months it randomly crashed when i turned it on, so ordered a westgate and now everything is working great even a little faster. simple installation, compatible, just dropped it in the slot and reinstalled windows. however only order this if you are using it to replace your hardrive, not if your adding on because it doesnt come with a installation kit.

The 640 2 platter WD HDD is great. I stroked the drive by partitioning off the first 100GB. I was able to attain an average read speed of 120MB/s on this partition. There is no simple way I have of checking access time on this partition, but it is definitely quick.The average over the whole drive is right around 100MB/s read speed.With these numbers, it competes with the raptor series.

First hard drive was dead, too many bad sectors, but the were in the middle of the disk, so I didn't know until I tried to copy files to the drive. Returned it to WD and got a replacement, that one was dead. Returned it, next one was dead. I call WD to complain, they upgraded it to a 640 HD and paid for the return shipping. New drive came and it was dead also. Called and complained again. Now they are sending me a 750Gb HD, but the shippment is delayed. So I got my first HD at the beginning of Dec. and now it's into Jan. and I still don't have a working one. I've bought WD hard drives before and they worked fine, but I'm not going to buy another one for a while. These have all been their blue models, maybe their black models are better.

I bought one of these (on Amazon) because it was well-rated, 500GB, and a great price. My Dell desktop had only 1 drive (a 40GB SATA), but could take 2 drives. I downloaded the free HDCLONE software (and made a boot CD for HDCLONE), added the new drive, updated the BIOS so that the machine would see the 2nd drive, and HDCLONE mirrored the new drive in about 2 hours. I then removed the old 40GB drive, plugged the new one in as primary, updated the BIOS (really easy), and *poof*, I now had one 500gb drive, a perfect copy of the old one. What could be nicer?It worked so well that I bought a second one of these and did the exact same thing to my other Dell desktop. Now I'm thinking about getting a 3rd and an enclosure and making my own external backup drive.

I bought this to deposit video on after recording it from a TV tuner. It was used as an internal SATA drive, and I filled it up at one point. It withstood numerous recordings and then renderings as I edited out commercials and created my personal collection. It is now in an external case and connected to my laptop via USB 2.0 and still works fine. We play videos off of it through the network. I will say that when I got it, it had trouble initializing, but the included software solved that problem. It has worked wonderfully since then under what I would consider to be pretty rigorous use.

I bought this HD on Jan-2009 and used it as a storage unit only. I had a single primary partition and around 350Gb on videos, music and images.After 7 months of usage, during a normal boot on Win XP, I got a black screen saying that the Master File Table (MFT) was corrupt. I've been trying to get back my HD to work after almost two months witout success.I've worked with Hitachi, Samsung and Seagate hard disks and this is the first time I get such error.I don't beleive it's a WD lack of qualit, but perhaps this model is not as good as the manufacturer's reputation.

Check the Power Connectors in your device, this drive has no "Legacy Power Connector" (Western Digital's Term) on it. You can buy an adapter cable for less than $1.00 for power - but you chould check before ordering this disk.You should also know that this disk does not include any "SATA" cable either.

I have 7 Western Digital 500gb hard drives and I am ordering 2 more today.I use these drives to store digital photography images for both myself and my wife. We typically shoot 50 - 100 gb per photography trip, and we keep 2 additional sets of backups on separate hard drives. So we need a lot of drives. These drives sit in removable drive bays in SATA enclosures and they are moved in and out of the enclosures all the time.I have never had a Western Digital hard drive fail, even though several were purchased as soon as that size became available. I have had other brands fail but not Western Digitals. Sooner or later they will fail but with the cost of 500gb drives this cheap it is silly not to have backups.

I have used WD hard drives in my computers for years (still have a 40GB IDE running the OS). Anyways, i got 2 of these to upgrade the storage space and it was a painless install...I chose these over others because of the 2 platters (too many hard drive crashes over the years).Oh yeah when i looked on amazon they were sold out. went to another website and paid $10 more got one that was D.O.A. and now hoping their customer service refunds the money. Should have just let amazon back order for me. (the other web site also sent me a blue and green when i wanted two blue, I recycle to save the enviroment).

My original Dell computer came with a 160 Gb hard disk that was fine four years ago. With many digital photos and much music, I was running out of space. And since I needed to reinstall Windows XP, it made sense to add disk storage at the same time.At under $100 this product just made sense. It was easy to install and is much faster than my original hard disk. And, by keeping both disks in the computer and reconfiguring my BIOS, I am able to use my new Western Digital 640 Gb HD as my C: drive and keep my old drive available should I need to get data I may have forgotten to move to the new drive. Eventually, the old disk will be used just for my pictures and music.I would definitely recommend the Western Digital 640 Gb for anyone looking to increase storage.

I did not know this was an OEM item without accessories when I purchased it. This presented me with cabling issues, especially because it does not have a four-pin Molex power connector. However the vendor was very accommodating and the issue was resolved.The drive is extremely quiet and is working fine for my purposes, which is average home use, no extreme gaming, etc. The reason I purchased it was more space for VHS to DVD conversion, and it was successful at that.

So far I have not had a bad experience with WD drives and this one has been no exception. It's amazing how much the price on these drives has fallen! I was impressed enough to have just purchased a second one of these drives for a computer at work, since the first one has proven to be such a great deal. There are no accessories, so you will need an extra cable if this is an additional drive for you. Instructions, if needed can be downloaded from the manufacturer.

Connected drive to spare SATA Port, booted up, went into control panel, disk management to setup drive. The drive came up with no problems. Used Acronis True Image to Do a Clone Disk from my old C: drive to the WD drive.I then removed old drive and booted up. It did ask to Activate Windows Vista Again but one click and it was done. Runs much faster than my old Maxtor 250 drive and very quit. I can't hear it running over the fans. I have to look at the drive light to see if it is running. A good price for 640 GB drive. I plan to buy a 2nd one later on.

I am a personal fan of Western Digital drives and this one doesn't disappoint.The drive is very fast and very quiet. It worked perfectly with its twin in a RAID configuration. The price was great. Unless you absolutely need more storage this is a great drive to get.Just be aware that this is just a bare drive, you get no cables, no mounting screws, nothing except the drive itself.

I needed a replacement for a failed drive in my living room computer, and this was just the ticket. I also needed it *fast*, and since I have Prime it was a no-brainer to go with Amazon.To me, the WD6400AKS represents the best compromise between capacity, noise, heat, and price. You can certainly find drives that are faster, quieter, cheaper, or bigger, but I found few other drives that balance all of these considerations as well as this one.No, it's not sexy, but it gets the job done. That's what I want from a hard drive.

I never received this item. After many days, I was notified the item had been returned because it was "undeliverable". There is no reason the item should have been returned. I order technology items on a regular basis from many vendors and have delivery made to my home office with no problem. The lack of communication from Amazon.com was very disheartening. I'm not sure I will order from Amazon.com again.

I added this to an old PC I am using as a DVR via windows 7 media center. I use it to store all the recorded TV. It's silent, and big enough. If you record in HD you might want something A LOT larger. But, larger might be noisier. I'm not an expert, but I think this has two 320MB platters vs. 3 250MB platters in the 750MB. Two platters is theoretically quiter than three, but you'd have to check exact specs.

The 640 gig SADA hard drive is being used in an Antec MX-100 3.5" USB Aluminum Enclosure and all is working fine so far. I had a large amount of data to transfer initially so I connected it internally on the motherboard for that. Afterwards, I just power it up when needed. I have had no problems so far. The drive is OEM so don't expect cables, disks, etc.

I had this drive installed in a desktop until a couple of weeks ago when I suddenly got a drive read error. Pulled the drive and it sounds like it's full of sand. Platter self-destructed spectacularly with no warning. It's under warranty, but I wonder what the next drive will do. At least I don't have to worry about security of info on the drive when I send it in. The drive was only about 8 months old. Very disappointed.

I bought this drive from NewEgg because it was marketed as quiet. It's quiet compared to standard drives but compared to the Samsung SP2004C drives I own this is very noisy.I bought two of these within the past year. They didn't even last a year. The first one started out Ok so I bought a second one, it was a good price for 500GB. Well, there is a reason they're cheap, because they are bad drives.I've been using computers since I was 12. I'm 28 now, and these are the first drives that have died on me in all that time, (five systems and upgrades later). I always treat the drives very well, avoiding hard resets and shut downs and such. I'm careful, yet despite that both drives I bought failed.The second one was never quite right, always a delay when accessing data. That one died first. The first one, which I thought was good, died a couple months later. I'm really disgusted with Western Digital. I used to buy only WD because I was satisfied with their drives, especially the 80 GB Caviar.After this I will be switching to Samsung. The Samsung drives I have bought are quiet and reliable with no quirks. In addition, after the drive died I found my computer is responding better and is faster. Seems the drives were causing some type of lag in my system.Western Digital seems to be going downhill fast. Avoid these drives and go with Samsung or Seagate with the five year warranty.

You may have to know someone to get this working. Doesn't come with the needed cable to the mother board.Luckily I knew someone that works on PCs and so he let me have an extra cable that I needed to get this HD working.OH-this is not replacing a hardrive ... which in that case the cable from the old HD could be used.

Linux saw the 500GB with out any problem. Windows 2K only sees 128GB. If you want one large partition you will need Windows XP SP2 or above, so I've been told.

Western Digital WD6400AAKS WD Caviar SE16 SATA Internal Hard Drive, 640 GB, 3 Gb/s, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM Large size (640 GB), fast and ultra quiet at a great price. Transferred my PC files to the new disk in about an hour, and then moved the old disk to an external USB case (under twenty dollars) for a portable backup. As mentioned, this is a bare bones disk (no SATA cable, instruction manual, transfer software) that is perfect as a replacement drive.** Update 1 January 2009: Disk contiunes to work fine. Very quiet. Great purchase.
