Bought this from another retailer, as previous reviews pointed out it does not come with screws or cables, and hdd screws are not available on Amazon for some reason. What i really like besides the obvious features of this hdd is the fact that Western Digital offers a free Acronis True Image software download on their website. Which means, free cloning! Took less than an hour to clone my old disk onto the new one. Set it up as a second disk, cloned it, unplugged the old disk and plugged this one in it's place. Booted right up, restart after installing WD drivers. [Just DO NOT FORGET to set your computer to never shut off or it will shut off in the middle of the process and you will have to do it over.] I play WoW and I am having no problems so far. Running on a Dell Inspiron Desktop 32 bit Vista 2gb Mem EVGA 9400 GT Graphics.

Well the only hard drive brand not to fail on me is Western Digital. This is replacing a Maxtor 250gb hard drive that started making loud squeaking noises until it died.This hard drive is much lighter and quieter. I can't hear it at all running next to my WD RAPTOR 74 gb from ~2004 which is still running strong. I would recommend this hard drive for anyone replacing a broken hard drive like me or upgrading to a bigger hard drive because you are still using drives from 5+ years ago which where not 3.0 gb/s. Easy install.Note: You need to provide your own sata cable (come with motherboard) and mounting screws which usually (come with the computer case) so if you built your own computer or are planning to build your own computer you should have these things.

when i get the hdd i installed in to a brand new mobo, install windows 7 ultimate 32 bits version.with the os installed, i turn on the system and get a blue screen of dead, the error code for the bsod was related to the hdd.once i was able to have the system up and running, i try to install office proffessional edition, but durind the installation process the system crash again.i'm very dissapointed for this product, i have a seagate hdd i test that one on the same system and that one works just fine.

I ordered over a week ago and it still says "shipping soon." i could have learned how to solder one from scratch by now. how hard is it to put stuff in a box? i would cancel the order if i could and just one at best buy or something if i hadnt already made this grave error. ordered other products on newegg the same day and already received them. my $500 worth of other components that were delivered are USELESS until amazon gets its act together. will in the future incur the few extra dollars cost to avoid the inconvenience. by "super saver" they definitely don't mean time.

Keep in mind, this replaces the WD5000KS which had some errors (I hear).I got this drive as a gift & it's great.Installing this drive either as an external drive or your main drive was as easy as replacing any other drive. Do keep in mind this isn't a "retail boxed" drive. It's just the drive (this is where the "savings" come in).Mostly because of my OS (I am using XPSP-2), I had to install this as an IDE, but I'm not ready to go to 64 bit processing as yet. Only because of the plethora of games & software that I like to use.No problems with this drive. I have been using WD drives exclusively for many, many years. They are a bit more in price, but are made solid. This isn't to say they won't go south like every company seems to have. I have drive over 10 years old that work fine. Which is a nice investment.You can scour the internet & find may deals on many drives. The features to look at are: RPM, Cache & size. Give up any for whatever you deem important. WD uses three levels on their drives currently. Green, blue & black. This one is blue, so it's fast & spins down quickly to save energy.If you have the computer to handle it, this drive will run games very quickly via USB. Not all drives do, nor do all computers have the power to let them. This one didn't even blink.Hope you have fun with it.

First, I will start with the Bad, so that the Good and the Ugly will have the necessary background. The Bad is that within a few months, this hard drive failed. I used the WD utility to check it and the utility could not complete and report. I am no expert, but I think the controller on this drive was bad.The Good, is that WD replaced the drive with the only cost to me the postage of returning the bad drive (although I could argue that they should have sent a postage paid return container, I find their approach acceptable). There was little wait time on the technical support line (<5 min) and there was little hassle in requesting an RMA#. The most difficult part of the return was determining whether to use their normal return, where I send the bad drive back first, or their advanced return, where they take my credit card number, send out a drive and I send the bad drive back within 30 days to ensure my credit card is not charged. I went with the advanced return to get the working drive quicker. The process was flawless.The Ugly is that while I backed up my most important data and did not lose any of these files, I still lost about 250Mb of data that while not important, I would really rather not lose. In general, I count on a drive lasting at least three years. After that, I get really fanatical about backing up everything. By then, that capacity drive is dirt cheap and buying a duplicate/replacement is easily affordable. Sure, accidents can happen anytime, so I back everything up that is important all the time, but to have a drive last just a few months seems a little ridiculus.WD was my manufacturer of choice for several years. I think their tech support is outstanding; however, this is the second WD drive I have had that had problems resulting in the loss of data. I am going to be looking a little more critically at my next purchases before I dive into another WD drive.

I just got this so i cant say anything about it's durability. I did format it and install windows and it works fine. But the packaging is keeping this from a 5 star item. Box wasnt taped up, and only thing keeping it from shaking in the box is a few cardboard like grooves. I was concerned it might be broken.Hopefully it doesnt brake down on me like other reviewers say.

I originally received one of these drives as an RMA replacement for a 500gb hard drive that I had fail, and I really liked it. It's quick and has ample storage. Amazon then had a sale on the same model hard drive, and I got it into my head to buy another identical drive in the pursuit of an eventual RAID setup. Until I get more hard drives to fill out a RAID5, this new drive I purchased from Amazon has held up well as a standard backup drive. I have had zero issues with it for the month or so it has been running.What I DID have issues with was Amazon's packing job. Hard drives are sensitive items, and I was severely disappointed with the condition my package arrived in. First of all, the box arrived badly damaged. This is of course not Amazon's fault, but it was not a good start to my product unpacking experience. Once I got it open I found a smaller box poorly padded with one piece of inflatable package padding, which protected only three sides of the smaller inside box (one side was flat on the bottom of the bigger box). Inside that resided my poor hard drive which was in an anti-static bag surrounded by deflated padding bubbles. It had been rattling around, almost entirely unpadded. I understand this is an OEM drive and does not come with the full retail packaging, but when shipping sensitive materials I consider it a minimum of decency to at least ship it in packaging that will prevent it from potential damage. Amazon utterly failed in this regard, and also failed to respond to my complaints concerning the packaging after I received it. 5 stars on the product, 1 star on Amazon. It made me remember why I do most of my computer hardware purchases at Newegg.

This drive is a bang for the buck! I just plugged it into my computer and the motherboard detected it immedately.Install Windows 7 on this hardrive was a breeze.I would reccommend this drive to everyone.*hint* This is an oem drive,so be expected to not get a included sata cable and screws.The other thing that i didnt like about was how my hardrive was packed.Their was one airbag in their in a cardboard box, but it worked fine.

I have a total of 5 of these drives: 2 in a RAID 0 configuration and 3 in a RAID 5 configuration. While I have not run bench mark tests, I can tell you that using Resource Monitor on Windows 7 the Disk Queue very seldom is > 1. I have had the disks for @3+ months and am very pleased with my purchase. If set up any more RAID arrays these will be the first drives I consider.

The plastic packaging inside the box was cracked, and the drive was sliding across the box freely when i opened it. The drive seems fine, though i am nervous it might fail soon due to damage, i would return it but don't want the trouble. All my previous amazon items purchase have been perfect with no trouble. I don't want to be fussy either, but the delivery promised 3 days, i just want to note it took 10 days for delivery.

We purchased this drive May 2010, and we can't say anything good about it.First, we tried to format it on Windows XP - no deal, Windows kepttelling us "This drive cannot be formatted".So we tried Windows Vista, SP2. Nothing.Windows 7. Nothing again.We can't say it was DOA, because the drive showed upon the system and was spinning.Western Digital is moving away from Windows XP, and developingdrives that work exclusively with Windows 7. We can't saythat this drive was one of these "special" 4k size drives(There was no specifications on the website on this model sayingso).We no longer sell Western Digital hard drives here at ourfirm. If you get a "Hardware Initiate Failed!" comment with this HDD, your computer is only SATA 1.0 compatible and you must jumper pins 5 and 6 to revert the HDD to 1.0(second pair of pins from the SATA connector). Since this is an 'OEM' item devoid of instructions and the like, I had no way to know this and thought it was DOA. So, I ordered a replacement. When the second one also came DOA, I knew it couldn't be the HDD's. The possibility of getting 2 DOA Western Digital HDD's is pretty much 0. Once I figured everything out, I decided to keep both.

Cons: This is the second WD Hard Drive to die after just one month of operation. It cost us $155 to have a Tech shop interpret the error codes from the "Blue Screen of Death," to determine that the problem was a defective one month old Western Digital Hard Drive. Model: WD Caviar BlueWe had to pay WD are own shipping charges to return WD's defective Hard Drive + the $155 Tech shop repair bill for their analysis of the Hard Drive error codes that came up on the Blue Screen of Death Screen.Other Thoughts: We realize that no Hard Drive company's product is perfect. But, after this second bad experience with this model of Western Digital Hard Drive, we are going to try our luck with a different manufacturer's Hard Drive.Since the Western Digital Hard Drive is defective, we should not have to pay WD to return their defective product. WD should have a policy to compensate all shipping charges, once they are able to verify that their Hard Drive is indeed defective.

This is a basic hard drive with no extras that came along with it. I've used it exclusively to back up the hard drive in my desktop computer. The price at $50 was the lowest I found anywhere else, so that was the main attraction of this item.

I am running Windows Vista with this as the master drive, and my old Hitachi Deskstar being demoted to slave drive. According to HDD Tune this thing is a 40% increase across the board (read, write, seek, and burst transfer), and thats compared to the SATA-300 Hitachi that outperforms a WD ATA 133 by 50% or so.According to the onlike specs (backed up by other reviews I found) the Cavair blue is only slightly behind the $20 or so more Cavair Black, which is only 1.0 ms seek time slower than the $300 velociraptor.The only complaint I have is the reason I bought the 250 gig was to partition into an 80, and a 170, then RAID 0 the partition and my Hitachi. Unfortunatly, my RAID controller (750i South Bridge with media sheild) dosen't recognise partitions as HDDs like Windows, so all I would get is a 160G RAID 0, and I suspect the Hitachi may be getting old, so I wouldn't trust my personal data to it, just my game installations (in Vista game saves are automatically move to the "My saved games" folder).On a foot note, the drive is "bulk," so no cables. Also the legacy connector has been removed so you'll need a real SATA power connector.My system 28SEPT09ASUS P5N-DPentium D 950 (for sale on Amazon $145) moving to C2Q Q8200Crucial PC2-6400 (2X1024)Corsair TX750No GPU at this time, waiting to see what games are bundled with the GTX260 next mo.

Purchased two Western Digital WD6400AAKS WD Caviar Internal Hard Drive, 640 GB in Dec 2008 for my D-Link DNS321 NAS. Work great so far. I have them in a mirrored / RAID array. Good read / write speeds. Very happy.

I bought this disk in January 2009. It sat in the box until June 2009. It got very light use for three months and then sat unused until June 2010. After one week the system wouldn't boot. I am now running CheckDisk. The file check routine has had to repair hundreds of files. Luckily, the files are all backed up.

Box arrived without tape. Opened to reveal the hard drive in ESD bag loosely jammed into a small cardboard box. I can only imagine how well this thing traveled, the ESD shows visible signs of impact from the logic board.I've never received a HDD in this kind poor packaging. Usually a layer of something shock absorbent is standard, like bubble wrap or urethane, styrofoam... This is unacceptable.I plan on doing some diagnostics on the disk and won't be surprised if anything appears dysfunctional.The most disturbing thing was that it was shipped and placed in my mail completely unsecured and it's contents could have been pilfered by anyone along it's way.

These are decent drives, but google 'TLER and RAID' to see that WD has disabled a function required for dependable RAID on all of its Black, Blue and Green drives. This means you can setup a RAID array using these drives, but they will fail under heavy use and cause the RAID array to break.WD would like you to pay 60% more for the RE3 version drive for RAID arrays. In my view, this is a blatant cash grab. After 10 years of buying only WD drives, I will not buy another as long as they do this. Seagate has done the same, so it's only Hitachi and Samsungs for cheap RAID arrays these days.

Yes I got on on the REALLY good deal here for the drive for just under $40.00 shipped (super-saver). I won't bore you fellow enthusiasts with details that 90% of you already know. Enthusiasts are the ones that usually buy white-box OEM drives and they (and i) already know what the drive is capable of and it's specifications.It came in a small box and was delivered in a reasonable time-frame (about 6 business days) and was in a very small box, BUT it had very thin bubble wrap and the drive would slide from one end to the other inside of the box. Not good. Not good at all, but stunningly the drive was fine and tested out great. Running in SATA II mode just fine with great read/write speedsThe deal that was offered with this drive was a stunner price wise was and was quickly sold out at that price, and i'm not sure I have ever seen an HDD deal this good before for the price/capacity shipped. I'm glad I got in on it and I hope Amazon and other merchants (you know like the "other place" that computer enthusiasts/builders usually shop at) would occasionally do the same from time to time. Certainly it would bring a lof of needed traffic to the site and it's good for the economy. Even if you didn't get in on the fabulous deal it's still a fantastic SATA drive for the price.

First of all I want to mention that this drive, Western Digital Caviar Blue 640 GB, is the EXACT SAME MODEL that ships pre-installed with 2009 Mac Pro's. Trust me, i opened mine up and checked the model number on the drive in Bay 1. If you ever need an extra hard drive and just want the same one for your Mac Pro, DO NOT buy the "Apple Hard Drive Kit" from the Apple Store. It is the same exact one you can get here on Amazon, and for about a third of the price. You can install it yourself VERY easily (it took me 3 minutes and one small phillips head screwdriver). Its about as easy as inserting a Nintendo game cartridge into an NES game system. Actually it is easier, because you don't need to sit there and blow on it for 5 minutes.That said, onto the review:I swear by WD hard drives and have never been failed by them. They are fast, efficient and rugged. My only complaint is that it could be sometimes a bit loud to hear the drive spinning inside the aluminum Mac Pro housing. But nothing too distracting.Do yourself a favor, if you need to expand your HD space in your Mac Pro get yourself a WD drive. I have 3 of them installed (one Caviar Blue 640 and two Caviar Black 1TB). You won't regret it.I know some people have had nightmare situations with Amazon shipping drives carelessly packed, but the ones I have gotten from Amazon have all been shipped DOUBLE boxed and with plenty of cushioning.

Ive never had one issue with Western digital caviar drives, and I used them the last 10 or more years, since I never shut my machiens off they rn 24/7 and the WD caviar drives just run perfectly.I bought 2 of these caviar blue drives, now a 3rd one, the first 2 came in a nice little box with instruction manual not a little piece of paper, and mounting screws, it was well packaged and it just looked great, you definitely felt and could see its a quality drive.

We chose to buy from Amazon instead of Newegg. The methods of storing/handling and packaging these raw, OEM drives causes a lot of DOA units.Newegg (as of 8 months ago from this posting) still has problems with DOA units. I think Newegg may stack these and stress surface mount components, etc. No such problems with the amazon.com drives so we buy 100% of our drives from Amazon.Pros- Quiet- Bulletproof (the AAKS) We have 20+ (now 30+) of these in Dell T3400 Precision workstations and put 3 in each machine.NOTE: We have not had even ONE problem in 2+ years of NORMAL use - see 01/05/2010 update - (oldest 12/30 drive units are 2+ years old, others are 1+ years).Cons- None that I know of so far.Did a lot of research on the platters they use on these drives and the technology. The AAKS seems to be the sweet spot in the line. AACS and AAJS were a bit different but not much. The WD5000CSRTL model seemed to have the most problems.The environment these drives run are lab servers that are "ON" 24/7 so we don't get the same ON/OFF cycles that a home system would have.Checking the hard driveRun the "WD diagnostics" that come with the disk or you can download the utility from the Western Digital site to find bad sectors just in case you get a bad one (we never have).This utility will run on *ANY* disk (not just WD). It may take a few hours for a "full scan" but it's time well spent.01/05/2010 Update: Finally lost one of these 500GB drives due to a move to a new building. The drive was near 2+ years old. The head didn't crash and the drive spun up but Windows XP wouldn't recognize it so it needs some specialized software kung-fu to re-mount the drive. (it was a secondary drive -no OS). The data will probably be recovered into a 2nd drive. I expect one of the movers dropped this particular machine in the move (Hey, it's not a soccer ball, it's a hard drive, what do you expect?) Still a great drive for under $60.

Just because a hard drive (Western Digital Caviar Blue 320 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive)is capable of handling high G's is no reason to ship it without cushioning! The drive came in a well-packaged brown box, but had no cushioning inside - none, nada, zip, zilch!! The outside box outside did not say fragile either.I suppose it should not be unsafe to rely on this hard drive to store your precious data since shippers will have given the package TLC in its handling of this package. It's not like they throw packages around!

Amazon shipped this hard drive as if it were not a sensitive computer accessory. Airbags were half inflated, some not inflated at all. Box containing hard drive was directly at the bottom with no proctection under it and able to move from side to side, only had 'protection' at the top. I sent it back, didn't want to even test the hard drive. Even if it worked, it would probably malfunction a lot quicker than it would have if it were packaged correctly.

I already had one of these in my computer. I'd been using it for years with no problems, but I was starting to worry that something might happen eventually, so I bought two more and set them up in a RAID 5. All is still going good, I guess. Decent drive, seems fast enough, have yet to see one die.

I ordered two of these drives along with an enclosure that was supposed to provide RAID 0/1 functionality. These drives are excellent, but unfortunately the enclosure would not work properly on my Windows 7 box; the RAID 0/1 functionality did not work.I returned both the disk drives and the enclosure. Amazon made the process very easy, and gave me no trouble whatsoever about returning these items. Amazon is the greatest! They have earned my loyalty!

Got this on the 7th of Jan, and it worked great. Today is now the 27th of Feb and after 5hours of investigating what was causing repeated lockups and frequent freezes on my OS, the culprit reared it's ugly head to be THIS hard drive. I don't know what caused it's now deteriorating health but I'm now on the risk of losing +400gb of important data. I enjoy these exciting times of my life.. If you want to take the chance on the HD good luck.

Bought this drive as a replacement for a drive that failed. Actually placed the order the same day that I submitted the RMA request to WD for the failed drives. I think I got the replacement for the failed one before the one from Amazon showed up. I knew I would end up with an additional drive, I just didn't expect WD to react so fast.This drive will now start out in my new NAS.... life is good.

Unit was easy to install once I downloaded the installation procedure for Western Digital. Windows XP made it easy by first installing a signature and then formatting the drive. Once formatted it works fine.

I've tried many HDD brands and I'm partial to WD drives. I've never had any problems with any of them. I still have an old 80 GB EIDE drive until I ran out of room for it and it's several years old. No bad sectors and never a problem. Only retired due to size. This drive is performing as expected. Easy install, no problems. Using it as my primary, multi-boot OS drive. Pretty quiet and would recommend Caviars to anyone.

I bought this drive to use in my Synology DiskStation. Hard drive is easy to install, and format. It's also very quiet. Looking to buy another one to have as a backup. I would recommend this to a friend.

Vantec NexStar 3 NST-360SU-BK 3.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA External Hard Drive Enclosure (Onyx Black)Works as expected. Quite. Heat and vibration have not been a problem. These bulk/OEM drives are perfect for enclosures. I used the linked case and it works great. Don't need any cables, screws or jumpers with an enclosure. Cheaper than buying an external hard drive plus gives me the flexibility to use the enclosure with other drives or install this one in another machine. I like it!

A hard drive is a simple, basic computer component; it either works or it doesn't. I bought a matched pair of these for a NAS/RAID I put together for a client. One of the drives was DOA. I contacted the vendor and never even received a reply. I will never purchase from "Sidian" again. However, I contacted Western Digital directly and they promptly issued an RMA and we affected the exchange simply and quickly. The replacement arrived and there were no further problems. So, my review is this: Sidian as a vendor is on my "do not use" list; Western Digital hard drives I recommend and will buy again.
